Life-size robotic models will also be presented in the exhibition in conversation with the drawings. Their work, although varying in style and form, speaks to a generation growing up with the influence of mass consumption, internet shopping, the glut of plastic toys, fake jewels, and tchotchkes. Whereas artists of the \u201860s and \u201870s reached first for paint tubes and canvas, these artists use inexpensive and lowbrow materials to twist the signifiers of pop culture, as they relate to gender politics and American ideals. It\u2019s a balancing act between the icing and the cake, surface and substance. \r\n\r\nBarlow\u2019s confection-like constructs are unsettling, much like an empty float or matted-hair Barbie in a backyard pool. Although enticing, they allude to something lost in the translation, some sweetness, or idealism gone missing, along with what once mattered. Yet, the work isn\u2019t cynical, but embraces transition instead. We\u2019ve hardened a little in the process, much like the stiff and sugary piping Barlow often incorporates in her works. And maybe that\u2019s a good thing. \r\n\r\nIf Barlow\u2019s aesthetic leans towards Stepford Wives gone awry and the guilty pleasure of eBay, Shaina Kasztelan offers us psychedelic Middle America. Her assemblages are disorienting, vertigo-inducing. Technicolor sculptures conjure up hallucinations of the mall, or spinning carnival rides that last too long. Kasztelan\u2019s work is sinister, even a little menacing. As viewers we are leery.\r\n\r\nFinally, Bailey Scieszka takes this subversive garish ethos full tilt and invents her own world, literally morphing into her own creation. Scieszka\u2019s alter-ego Old Put, a demonic shape-shifting clown, becomes the artist\/protagonist and creates work in performance, video and drawing. Old Put collects pop culture references like artifacts of a lost civilization, and seems as likely to commit a murder as bake a cake. \r\n\r\nFor Barlow, Kasztelan and Scieszka, outdated paradigms about class, good taste, and femininity are just temporal flashes in the pan. Using a large data set of Ca and Mg isotope measurements in Neogene\u00a0shallow-water carbonate sediments and associated pore-fluids from the platform to the slope\u00a0in the Bahamas we have shown that stratigraphic variability in these isotopic systems is due to\u00a0variations in both mineralogy and style of diagenetic alteration (fluid-buffered vs. sediment-buffered). This interpretation is rather counterintuitive given that these elements, and Ca in\u00a0particular, are major components of the carbonate sediment and should be relatively robust \u2013\u00a0almost as robust as C \u2013 to diagenetic alteration.\r\n\r\nThe observation that sediment \u03b444Ca values in Neogene shallow-water carbonate\u00a0sediments from the platform top, margin, and slope are largely controlled by mineralogy and\u00a0the extent of fluid-buffered early marine diagenesis and that temporal variations in fluid-buffered diagenesis can generate stratigraphically coherent co-variation between many\u00a0carbonate-bound geochemical proxies (\u03b413C, \u03b418O, Sr\/Ca, etc.) has significant implications for\u00a0the interpretation of both the major and trace element chemistry of shallow-water carbonate\u00a0sediments in the geologic record.
