SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LACS Exhibition. #NoHumanIsAlien: Germán Andino's The Habit of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Reception: An exhibition of Germán Andino’s graphic history: The Habit of Silence (El hábito de la mordaza) \n \nHonduran journalist and artist Germán Andino’s harrowing work of graphic history depicts gang violence in the city of San Pedro Sula from personal and deeply humane perspective. The installation of his work as a mural in a central public space on our campus is intended to provoke conversation in place of silence. Much reporting on Central America depicts the problem of gangs and violence as far away and impossible to solve\, and the victims and perpetrators of this violence as essentially alien. With the hashtag #NoHumanIsAlien\, the artist and organizers invite reflection on a crisis of violence in Central America that has been exacerbated\, and in important ways created\, by policies originating in the United States. We hope to spark and enrich debate on our campus about current immigration policies\, including the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran migrants and the asylum claims of tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children\, children who have fled the conditions depicted in Andino’s work. \n \nThis exhibit\, a large-scale comic strip along the halls of the second floor of Mason Hall\, will be open for viewing from March 19 - April 6\, 2018. \n \nJoin us for the opening reception with Germán Andino on March 26\, 2018 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Life and Times of Lizzy Bennet
DESCRIPTION:As the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death\, 2017 presents an opportunity to showcase not only significant early editions of Austen’s works held in the Special Collections Library\, but a much broader swath of materials revealing the historical milieu in which she and her characters lived.\n\nThe 1780s-1810s was a tumultuous time period in Britain with effects reaching to the present day\, and we are fortunate to be able to draw on a rich collection of sources that illustrate Austen’s historical moment\, from A Companion to the Ballroom and The Book of Common Prayer to An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species... and A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.\n\nThe Library will be closed December 23 to January 1.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Childbirth and the Arts of Judgment in Medieval Japan
DESCRIPTION:The organization of childbirth in elite households of medieval Japan (1185–1336) required serious planning and decisive orchestration. Although the initial preparations for an imperial consort’s labour could take several months\, what were to unfold inside the secluded birth chamber could easily escalate into both medical and ritual emergencies and necessitate a swift response from the consort’s female and male relatives\, ritual specialists\, physicians\, and midwives. Based on recently discovered medieval Buddhist manuscripts\, visual sources\, diaries\, and court protocols\, this talk will focus on the “gendered choreographies” taking place inside and outside the birth chamber and the actions of people who inhabited such spaces during the tense moments of royal consort’s labour. \n\nAnna Andreeva (PhD\, Cantab.) is a research fellow at the University of Heidelberg. She is the author of Assembling Shinto: Buddhist Approaches to Kami Worship in Medieval Japan (Harvard Asia Center\, 2017) and a co-editor of Transforming the Void: Embryological Discourse and Reproductive Imagery in East Asian Religions (Brill\, 2016).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Kyra Pazan\, Doctoral Candidate\, Department of Anthropology - University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The southern African coastlines have long been the focal point of Middle Stone Age (MSA) research in the subcontinent. Less is known\, however\, about contemporary developments in the interior. The 80\,000-year old lithic assemblage from Melikane\, a highland rockshelter in the Maloti-Drakensburg Mountains\, currently represents Lesotho’s oldest chronometrically dated archaeology. Melikane’s montane environment would have presented unique challenges to early humans due to its rugged topography\, lower temperatures\, and sparsely distributed floral and faunal resources. Questions arise: what adaptations allowed continuous occupation of the region? Were technologies specifically tailored for life in highlands or a result of cultural ties with lowland populations? Analysis of the Last Interglacial stone tool assemblage from Melikane suggests that these foragers persisted by creating regionally adapted technologies. Rather than reaching out to coastal populations to create “safety nets\,” highlanders adapted in situ and were confined to circumscribed social networks. These results imply significant behavioral flexibility early on in the Late Pleistocene\, further increasing our understanding of the evolution of modern humans.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Rise & Fall of the Miraculous Welfare Machine: Immigration and social democracy in 20th century Sweden
DESCRIPTION:For three quarters of a century\, Sweden has globally been treated as the quintessential example of the advanced Welfare State. Since the 1960s\, Sweden has also experienced a dramatic transformation from a relatively homogeneous nation to a visibly multiethnic society. In recent years\, Sweden has been celebrated by many for having Europe’s most generous refugee policies (at least until the crisis of 2015)\, but also been used as a warning example by others – e.g. by president Trump. \n\nWhat is the relationship between national identity and ethnic homogeneity on the one hand\, and conditions of participation in the benefits of a far-reaching Welfare State\, on the other? How has this issue been dealt with during the formation of the Swedish Welfare State and during later crises\, when the identity of the “People” of the “People’s Home” has been put into question? What has\, in this regard\, been the effects of the Social Democrats’ dominant role in Swedish politics? \n\nSuch questions are addressed in a recently published book by professor Carly Elizabeth Schall\, Purdue University\, Indiana. \n\nFree and open to the public\; sponsored by the Scandinavian Program of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Germanic Languages & Literatures at 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - Coordinated Persistent Airborne Information Gathering: Cloud Robotics in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Eric Frew\, Associate Professor\, University of Colorado Boulder\n\nFixed-wing aerial robotic technology has advanced to the point where platforms fly persistent sampling missions far from remote operators. Likewise\, complex atmospheric phenomena can be simulated in near real-time with increasing levels of fidelity. Furthermore\, cloud computing technology enables distributed computation on large\, dynamic data sets. Combining autonomous airborne sensors with environmental models dispersed over multiple communication and computation channels enables the collection of information essential for examining the fundamental behavior of complex environmental phenomena. Dr. Frew will describe progress made over the last decade developing software algorithms and hardware systems for coordinated persistent airborne information gathering. Applications that will be discussed include targeted observation of supercell thunderstorms and tornado formation\, persistent sampling of atmospheric fronts for severe storm forecasting\, and cooperative control for detecting\, localizing\, and tracking radio emitters.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Eric W. Frew is an associate professor in the Ann and H.J. Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department and Director of the Autonomous Systems Interdisciplinary Research Theme (ASIRT). Dr. Frew has been designing and deploying unmanned aircraft systems for over twenty years. His research efforts focus on autonomous flight of heterogeneous unmanned aircraft systems\; distributed information-gathering by mobile robots\; miniature self-deploying systems\; and guidance and control of unmanned aircraft in complex atmospheric phenomena. Dr. Frew was co-leader of the team that performed the first-ever sampling of a severe supercell thunderstorm by an unmanned aircraft.

DESCRIPTION:Fernando E. Boada\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Radiology\, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery\nDirector\, Center for Advanced Imaging Innovation and Research\nCo-Director\, Center for Biomedical Imaging\nNew York University\n\n\n“MR/PET Synergies: Correcting Motion During Dynamic MR/PET Scans Through Self\nRefocused Navigators and Coil Fingerprints”\n \nAbstract:\nMR/PET scanners allow simultaneous acquisition of MR and PET scans during clinical examinations. This feature has great potential to improve our ability to capitalize on PET’s unique capabilities to probe important metabolic processes in vivo. Examples include: improving image quality for low specific activity tracers through the use of joint MR/PET reconstruction\, reduction of radiation exposure (90%) for standard-of-care Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) scans\, improvement of tracer kinetic analysis and motion correction of dynamic PET scans. Motion correction of dynamic PET scans\, in particular\, is an unmet challenge as the use of external gating signals for retrospective motion correction has proven unreliable for a variety of different reasons. In this presentation\, we demonstrate an approach for motion correction of MR/PET scans based on the use of short\, self-refocused\, multidimensional navigator modules. These modules allow continuous (every TR) tracking of abdominal motion through monitoring of the time course of the “generalized projections” spatially encoded by the navigator modules. We demonstrate\, using in-vivo as well as motion phantom data\, that these modules are compatible with both 3D and 2D MRI- sequences and that their use allows the removal of large (60%) quantitative biases in PET scans due to multi-dimensional (i.e.\, cardiac and respiratory) motion blur.

SUMMARY:Other:Oxyfunctionalization of Remote C–H Bonds of Aliphatic Amines via Decatungstate Photocatalysis
DESCRIPTION: Derivatized aliphatic amines represent a common and important class of chemical building blocks prevalent in the pharmaceutical\, agrochemical and material industry. As a result\, approaches to directly install functionality on simple and unbiased amine precursors remain of paramount importance. While functionalizing alpha to the nitrogen has been well-studied and numerous methods exist\, achieving remote amine functionalization remains largely underdeveloped. Consequently\, we reasoned that a direct and protecting group free oxygenation of aliphatic amines (to arrive at keto-amine products) would provide an ideal means for introducing diverse functionality. Through the use of high throughput experimentation (HTE) a photochemical oxidation was identified that relied upon hydrogen peroxide (or oxygen) as the oxidant in combination with a non-precious metal photocatalyst. These conditions were shown to selectively oxidize a series of diverse aliphatic amine starting materials to their remotely oxidized analogs and was amenable to scale-up in flow. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nDanielle Schultz (Merck - Enabling Technologies Group)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law and Economics Workshop: Noncompetes in the US Labor Force
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nUsing nationally representative survey data on 11\,505 labor force participants\, we examine the use\, implementation\, and effects of noncompete agreements. Nearly 1 in 5 labor force participants were bound by noncompetes in 2014\, and nearly 40% had signed at least one in the past. Noncompetes are more likely to be found in high-skill\, high-paying jobs\, but they are also surprisingly common in low-skill\, low-paying jobs. We document that less than 10% of employees negotiate over noncompetes\, that roughly one-third of noncompetes are signed after accepting the job offer\, and that nearly two-thirds of job applicants had no alternative job opportunities when they were asked to agree to a noncompete. Differences in the competitive circumstances under which noncompetes are signed are associated with starkly different outcomes for employees: those presented with a noncompete before they accept a job offer and those who have alternative employment options earn 19% higher wages\, receive 14% more training\, and are 13% more satisfied in their job than those not bound by noncompetes. However\, those asked to sign after accepting an offer and/or without other employment options are 15% less satisfied in their job and experience no wage and training benefits. In contrast to the existing literature\, we find little role for the enforceability of noncompetes in explaining their use and their association with wages and training.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brian Selznick: Struck With Wonder
DESCRIPTION:Brian Selznick has been making children’s books since 1991. His illustrated novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret won the 2008 Caldecott medal and was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning movie Hugo. Wonderstruck\, his 2011 follow up to The Invention of Hugo Cabret was made into a movie by celebrated filmmaker Todd Haynes with a screenplay by Selznick. The Marvels\, the third book in a trilogy loosely connected to Hugo and Wonderstruck by themes of family and discovery\, was published in 2016. Celebrated as much for their stunning object quality as for their rich narrative\, Selznick’s books are best summarized in his own words: “It’s not exactly a novel\, not quite a picture book\, not really a graphic novel\, or a flip book or a movie\, but a combination of all these things.” Selznick has also worked as a puppeteer and a set designer\, and began his career as a bookseller at Eeyore’s Books for Children in New York City. Working with Christopher Wheeldon at the Joffrey last year\, he wrote a new narrative for a re-imagined Nutcracker\, which takes place in Chicago during the construction of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. His newest project is a 200-page illustrated book for beginning readers called Baby Monkey\, Private Eye\, written by his husband\, Dr. David Serlin.\n\nThis Penny Stamps Speaker Series event is supported by the Zell Visiting Writers Series and the Chelsea River Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Kerry Myers grew up in a small town suburb of New Orleans. He holds a B.A. in Communications and Journalism. In 1990\, he was sentenced to life without parole. Kerry served his time in the Louisiana State Penitentiary\, known famously as Angola. In 1996\, Wilbert Rideau\, the incarcerated editor of the prison’s news magazine The Angolite\, recruited Myers to write for the publication. In June 2001\, when Rideau left prison\, Myers became only the second editor of The Angolite in the previous 25 years. Under his guidance\, the magazine reported on the death penalty with a depth and clarity that was recognized with the Thurgood Marshall Journalism Award in 2007\, the first of many honors and awards. Taking on subjects like human trafficking\, juvenile life without parole\, aging\, Alzheimer’s and dementia in prison\, sentencing\, pardons and parole policy and more\, Myers guided the magazine as it became a resource for many top criminal justice and law programs in the US. In 2011 and 2012\, Myers wrote a critically acclaimed series on the history of women in the Louisiana penal system\, from Pre-Civil War to the present. In December 2016\, Governor John Bel Edwards signed Myer’s second unanimous commutation of sentence\, recommended by the Board of Pardons and Parole. Since that time\, Myers has been working as a free-lance journalist and photographer\, and is active in criminal justice reform in Louisiana\, leading a wave of change in the state.\n\nFree - no tickets required

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Come home Charley Patton
DESCRIPTION:In 2005\, Ralph Lemon completed THE GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY\, a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art\, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century. The Trilogy developed a global performance and visual language that was simultaneously modern and traditional\, East and West\, light and dark\, formal and free form. The primacy of process\, and the richness of materials that process uncovered-- artistic\, emotional\, historical-- created profound questions for Ralph as to how best to 'translate' the process and 'control' the materials in order to bring a work for audiences to the stage. The ongoing struggle between process and production created a tension that became a vital element in the Trilogy works\, which ultimately included dance/theater performances\, books\, video journals\, web projects and gallery exhibitions.\n\nPart 1: Geography (premiered 1997)\, began with Lemon's exploration into apparent African and post-African connections to his life as an African American. The cast included nine men of African descent from Cٴe d'Ivoire\, Guinea and the U.S.\n\nIn Part 2: Tree: (premiered 2000)\, Lemon directed his inquiry to Asia\, following his attraction to Buddhism and how it might generate an art aesthetic. Tree placed the energy and sound of the \"Africa\" of Geography next to a perceived Asian \"quiet\,\" while exploring the collision of tradition and modernity through contemporary performance. Performers included male and female dancers and musicians from Cٴe d'Ivoire\, China\, India\, Japan\, Taiwan and the United States.\n\nFor Part 3: Come home Charley Patton (premiered 2004)\, Lemon returned to America. Here\, he visited charged sites from the volatile history of the Civil Rights period\, performed ritual \"counter-memorials\" at lynching sites\, and danced in the living rooms of relatives of early blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta. Lemon also wove ideas from a mix of iconoclastic artists of contemporary literature and performance art\, from James Baldwin to Bruce Nauman\, into this historically charged research of rural America. Come Home Charley Patton investigated how different generations remember the same critical events and places\; what kind of narratives do justice to traumatic memories\; and what form memories can ultimately take through the aesthetic works of this project. The exploration of these elements contributed to a performance where documentary footage and autobiography shared the stage with the abstraction and fiction of contemporary dance/theater.\n\nChoreographed and directed by Ralph Lemon\nFeaturing performances by Djédjé Djédjé Gervais\, Darrell Jones\, Ralph Lemon\, Gesel Mason\, Okwui Okpokwasili\, and David Hamilton Thomson\n\nCome home Charley Patton (2004) is the culmination of Lemon's GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY\, \"a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art\, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century. \n\n\"...For Come home Charley Patton\, Lemon visited charged sites from the volatile history of the Civil Rights period\, performed ritual 'counter-memorials' at lynching sites\, and danced in the living rooms of relatives of early blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta... Post-screening discussions of each work will be moderated by Artist in Residence and Visiting Professor Eryn Rosenthal. \n\nCo-sponsored by the EXCEL Lab (Excellence in Entrepreneurship\, Career Empowerment and Leadership) of the School of Music\, Theatre and Dance.\n\n* “Personal\, present and immediate”: From Murray v. Maryland (1935)\, one of the precedents to the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education (1954).

SUMMARY:Performance:Field Report
DESCRIPTION:The name of the band Field Report is an anagram of that of frontman Nolan Porterfield. Field Report will grab you by the short hairs and make you see yourself. You’ll get up to that mirror and you’ll feel your breath bouncing back\, hot and present\, slapping you invisibly\, eerily with real texture and a physicality\, like it could push you back a couple inches with the next attack. You’ll recognize it and this time\, you can dance and thrash through it to get out to the other end. When was the last time a band did all that? Country-ish band Campdogzz opens.
