SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

The installation of his work as a mural in a central public space on our campus is intended to provoke conversation in place of silence. Much reporting on Central America depicts the problem of gangs and violence as far away and impossible to solve\, and the victims and perpetrators of this violence as essentially alien. With the hashtag #NoHumanIsAlien\, the artist and organizers invite reflection on a crisis of violence in Central America that has been exacerbated\, and in important ways created\, by policies originating in the United States. We hope to spark and enrich debate on our campus about current immigration policies\, including the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran migrants and the asylum claims of tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children\, children who have fled the conditions depicted in Andino’s work. \n \nThis exhibit\, a large-scale comic strip along the halls of the second floor of Mason Hall\, will be open for viewing from March 19 - April 6\, 2018. \n \nJoin us for the opening reception with Germán Andino on March 26\, 2018 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PCAP Exhibition: Michigan Art for Justice Forum
DESCRIPTION:In a collaboration with California Lawyers for the Arts\, Shakespeare Behind Bars\, and Creative Many that is funded by the Art for Justice Fund\, we are hosting the Michigan Art for Justice Forum. This all day symposium will bring together lawmakers\, artists\, scholars\, justice advocates and formerly-incarcerated people to imagine how the arts can contribute to reforming the criminal justice system. This event is part of a series of six public policy forums happening in 2018 in Michigan\, Texas\, Alabama\, Georgia\, New York and California. Reception to follow at 5:30 PM in the Duderstadt Center Gallery.\n\n“Prison does not define who we are as people\, but instead reflects poor decisions we have made. I would ask that those who judge us to perhaps look past the blue and orange state clothes we wear\, and to try to practice empathy. Please try to understand us. Please try to look past our imperfections and most importantly\, try to forgive us. I believe that many inmates struggle with\, yet desperately desire to express who they truly are\, and the reasons are numerous. Creating art is one avenue I personally use to express myself. All of my paintings reflect either my sadness\, my happiness\, my dreams\, my desires\, my passions\, or I just find them beautiful. Whatever painting of mine you may be looking at right now\, please know that while you are certainly seeing a part of me\, there is far more to understand and discover about me beyond the blue and orange I wear.\" G. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:MICHIGAN/MELLON RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM WITH PRESENTATIONS BY SUZANNE LETTIERI AND JULIE PEDTKE
DESCRIPTION:“Prom Picture: Scénography and Self-Image of Detroit Send-Offs\"\nSuzanne Lettieri\, Michigan/Mellon Design Fellow\n\n\"Equities: Cataloguing Emergent Development Models\"\nJulie Pedtke\, Michigan/Mellon Design Fellow\n\nThe Michigan/Mellon Project on the Egalitarian Metropolis brings together designers and humanities scholars to discuss questions of urbanism\, equity\, privatization\, and the common good. The project is co-directed by Robert Fishman\, Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning\, and Matthew Biro\, Professor of Art History. For more information\, please visit our website.\n\nSuzanne Lettieri is the 2016-2018 Michigan-Mellon Design Fellow. Prior to joining the University of Michigan\, she served as a Visiting Critic at Cornell University. She is the co-principle of JE-LE\, an independent design and research practice. She previously worked at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture\, CODA\, and Biber Architects. As project leader with CODA\, she guided the design and construction of Party Wall\, the winning entry at for the 2013 Young Architects Program at MoMA PS1. Her work has been exhibited in New York\, Boston\, and Venice and published in Project and The Cornell Journal of Architecture. Lettieri’s fellowship research focuses on the border conditions of Detroit\, materialized through a series of contentious objects. Her study of the intentional misuse of these objects offers a possible framework to consider discrete\, site specific\, and architectural-scale propositions that interface with urbanism and infrastructure.\n\nJulie Pedtke has recently completed a Master of Architecture from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning\, and Preservation. During her undergraduate thesis at Hampshire College\, she partnered with public housing tenants to explore ongoing activist campaigns in Holyoke\, Massachusetts alongside histories of public participation in urban redevelopment. She is most interested in interdisciplinary work addressing social justice issues in post-industrial cities\, specifically through cooperative ownership models\, participatory planning and design methods\, and grassroots organizing. She is continuing a study of community land trusts\, foreclosure\, and alternative finance with the Michigan-Mellon Project on Egalitarianism and the Metropolis this year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Health\, History\, Demography & Development (H2D2): Tax Burden on the Informal Economy
DESCRIPTION:Obeid Rehman\n\nTitle: Migrant-Household Communication and Information Sharing\n\nAbstract: In household decision making\, strategic use of private information by spouses is often considered a source of inefficient outcomes. For transnational households – where one spouse temporarily migrates for work – this information asymmetry is further exacerbated\, and can reduce the development impact of such migration. However the role of household communication and information sharing to create and/or address this information asymmetry is unclear. I plan to conduct an RCT to study the effect of making information observable on migrant-household information sharing and the household’s decision making. I will analyze whether spouses strategically misreport information to each other\, which margins are most misreported (income\, expenditure\, savings\, debt etc.) and does the opportunity to share information reduce asymmetry and affect the household’s subsequent decisions.\n\nTeju Velayudhan\n\nTitle: Do Value Added Taxes Thresholds Reduce Real Output?\n\nAbstract: Most countries have a value added tax (VAT) and most VAT systems feature a revenue based exemption threshold\, making the VAT notch a widespread and important element of tax systems. How do these VAT notches affect production efficiency\, and therefore the production efficiency of real VAT systems? This is a particularly relevant question in the context of emerging economies where the VAT exemption threshold is relatively high in the revenue distribution of firms. Recent papers estimate large responses of reported production to tax in developing countries in response to tax incentives and attribute the response to evasion. Unlike these papers which use administrative data from tax returns\, I use survey data where what firms report has no direct impact on their tax liability. Even in this survey data\, I find that firms reduce their survey-reported output between 6 to 20 percent to remain below the VAT exemption threshold. Because the survey-reported output may also be the outcome of misreporting instead of real production changes\, I devise a method to identify real changes using information on their tax-exempt inputs\, which they never report to the tax authority. I assemble a novel dataset by linking the five-digit product information from these establishments to the applicable tariff codes\, which allows me to measure how the tax liability for the firm changes over time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Tuesday Lecture Series | Gender\, Gambling\, and the State in the Militarized Islands between China and Taiwan
DESCRIPTION:When Chiang Kai-shek retreated to Taiwan in 1949\, he still kept under occupation two archipelagos near China -- Kinmen and Matsu -- and transformed them into military islands (1949-92). When scholars study these islands\, they mostly do so from the perspective of the Mao-Chiang conflict or global geopolitics. These islands are thus considered as the products of the Communist-Nationalist rivalry or confrontations of the Cold War. This talk\, instead\, aims to analyze this history from the perspective of the island society and culture\, in particular\, the islanders' gender relations and gambling habits. Dr. Lin will start with the period before the army arrived\, discuss the population's experience of militarization during 1949-92\, and indicate how gender and gambling culture can shed new light on our understanding of this history. \n\nWei-ping Lin received her PhD in Anthropology from Cambridge University. She joined the National Taiwan University in 1999\, where she is a professor. She is affiliated with the Harvard-Yenching Institute during 2017-18. Her research concerns Chinese popular religion\, including topics related to material culture\, spirit mediums\, and urban religious transformation. She is the author of \"Materializing Magic Power: Chinese Popular Religion in Villages and Cities\" (Harvard University Asia Center\, 2015). During the year at Harvard\, she will be writing a book manuscript about the role of imagination in the military outposts between China and Taiwan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Authoritarian Legacies: Persistent Patronage Networks and the Erosion of Merit-Based Judicial Selection in Mexico.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nDuring Mexico’s transition to democracy\, at the end of 1994\, a Judicial Council was created with the explicit aim of establishing a merit-based system for the selection and promotion of judges at all levels of the federal judiciary. However\, a series of indicators including nepotistic practices and ad hoc examinations show a divergence between the formal merit-based judicial career and the actual practice of appointments and promotions\, which is biased in favor individuals with connections to sitting judges and persons already working in the federal judiciary. Why? What is the source of the divergence between the formally merit-based career and the actually biased hiring practices? This paper argues that patronage networks formed during the authoritarian period\, when the Supreme Court hand-picked lower court judges\, have persisted under the democratic regime eroding the meritocratic selection system. Based on archival data\, and on a unique dataset on nepotism within the judiciary\, the paper uncovers the patronage networks\, and aims at showing their persistence and effects on the performance of the Judicial Council set to select judges on merit since 1995. Leveraging a relational perspective\, the paper offers a mechanism of transmission and reproduction of enduring authoritarian practices despite democratic efforts to uproot them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Joanne Murabito\, MD\, ScM presents \"Genetics of Menopause Timing: Findings from ReproGen Consortium\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The timing of reproductive aging events including age at natural menopause (ANM) is associated with a range of impactful health conditions later in life that extend beyond reproductive health to type 2 diabetes\, cardiovascular disease\, breast cancer\, and overall mortality. ANM is also associated with epigenetic age and may be a useful phenotype to unravel mechanistic insights into aging. Within the ReproGen consortium\, we conducted genetic association studies and identified genetic loci for ANM including a common variant in BRCA1\, variants in/near genes associated with delayed puberty\, and enrichment in genes in the DNA damage response pathway. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) followed by Mendelian randomization analyses to assess causal influences on later life outcomes will further our understanding of how reproductive traits impact the overall health of women.\nAbout Dr. Murabito: Dr. Murabito is Director of the Clinic at the Framingham Heart Study and she is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Her research interests include the epidemiology and genetics of longevity\, healthy aging\, reproductive aging and peripheral artery disease. Dr. Murabito is a member of the Genetics of Longevity Consortium and the ReproGen Consortium.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Compendium as Archive? Muslim Ethical Thought and its Circulation in Colonial India
DESCRIPTION:“Compendium as Archive?” considers two compendiums of Muslim ethical thought produced in colonial India: Makhzan-i-Hikmet (A Treasury of Wisdom) by Mufti Ghulam Sarwar\, and Makhzan-i-Akhlaq (A Treasury of Ethics)\, by Rahmatullah Subhani. Published in 1871 and 1932\, respectively\, both compile the sayings of an eclectic group of eminent men\, and/or kernels of their wisdom. Those included are Muslim and non-Muslim\, and date from classical antiquity to contemporary times. This talk considers both texts in their religious and historical context\, asking whether we can read them as archives of popular religious sentiment? While taking up the religious and cultural history of late colonial India\, the talk will also address the broader methodological concern of how print culture can serve as historical archive\, giving particular attention to the compendium as a genre.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | 2D Materials: Superconductivity and Magnetism
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of graphene has stimulated not only the field of carbon nanoelectronics\, but also studies of novel electronic phenomena in a wide range of 2D van der Waals’ materials. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent studies on two seemingly unrelated 2D materials: non-centrosymmetric superconducting NbSe_2 and magnetic CrI_3. As a result of the crystal symmetry and spin-orbit interactions\, the electron spins in both of these materials become Ising-like (i.e. spins locked to the out-of-plane direction)\, giving rise to unique magnetic properties. First I will discuss how the Ising spins in 2D NbSe_2 protect superconductivity under very high magnetic fields and experimental signatures of spin-triplet pairing correlations through tunneling measurements. I will then discuss our recent efforts in studying 2D magnetism in CrI_3 by electric fields. If time allows\, I will briefly discuss interesting future directions by combining these two materials to form heterostructures. \n

SUMMARY:Other:Lipid Corona Formation from Nanoparticle Interactions with Bilayers and Membrane-Specific Biological Outcomes
DESCRIPTION: While mixing nanoparticles with certain biological molecules can result in coronas that afford some control over how engineered nanomaterials interact with living systems\, corona formation mechanisms remain enigmatic. Here\, we report spontaneous lipid corona formation\, i.e. without active mixing\, upon attachment to stationary lipid bilayer model membranes and bacterial cell envelopes\, and present ribosome-specific outcomes for multi-cellular organisms. Experiments show that polycation-wrapped particles disrupt the tails of zwitterionic lipids\, increase bilayer fluidity\, and leave the membrane with reduced ζ-potentials. Computer simulations show contact ion pairing between the lipid headgroups and the polycations’ ammonium groups leads to the formation of stable\, albeit fragmented\, lipid bilayer coronas\, while microscopy shows fragmented bilayers around nanoparticles after interacting with Shewanella oneidensis. Our mechanistic insight can be used to improve control over nano-bio interactions and to help understand why some nanomaterial/ligand combinations are detrimental to organisms\, like Daphnia magna\, while others are not. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFranz Geiger (Northwestern University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mathematics for optimal contract theory
DESCRIPTION:Contract theory plays a major role in modern economic modeling and has genuine application in real life\, and many potential applications in connection with new technologies. The main concern is to design a management delegation contract between a Principal and an Agent which sets the basis of a satisfactory collaboration so as to put the best incentive for the Agent to fulfill the objective of the Principal. The problem is naturally formulated as a (Stackelberg) differential game. A general solution approach is provided by using recent representation results from backward stochastic differential equations.\n\nReception for the Speaker will follow at 5:00 PM in the Upper Atrium in East Hall on April 3\, 2018\n\nSponsored by the Van Eenam Lectures Series

DESCRIPTION:Presentations April 3\, followed by an opening reception in the college gallery. Exhibition on view: April 4 - May 4\n\nInstallations presenting the research of the three current architecture fellows:\n\nWilliam Muschenheim Fellowship - Laida Aguirre\nLaida Aguirre is an architectural designer and artist currently based in Los Angeles\, CA. She holds a BA from Northeastern University and a Master of Architecture from California Polytechnic Pomona where she is currently Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Architecture. She is the recipient of the Chapman Technology Award\, the Dangermond Scholarship and the Richard Neutra Award for Best Graduate Thesis for her project 'Catalog Tectonics’. Through research and exhibitions her work examines the disciplinary periphery of architecture and attempts to extract covert systems of authorship. Laida’s work has been exhibited in Los Angeles\, San Sebastian\, New York\, Berlin\, Oslo and Stockholm. She is co-founder of the design studio Cartouche with Ariana Rubcic.\n\nWalter B. Sanders Fellow - Steven Lauritano\nSteven Lauritano is a theorist and historian of architecture and the visual arts. He earned his doctorate from Yale University in December 2016 and is currently completing a book project on Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s conception of history\, based on the Prussian designer’s experimental work with antique remains. Lauritano holds an MArch from Princeton University and has spent time in the office of Reiser + Umemoto. He is a former fellow of the Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies at the Freie Universität and a recipient of the Carter Manny Award for Research\, granted by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. His writings have appeared in Perspecta\, Pidgin Magazine\, Circo and 306090 Books.\n\nWillard A. Oberdick Fellow - Brittany Utting\nBrittany Utting holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University where she received the Sonia Albert Schimberg Prize as outstanding graduating woman and was awarded teaching fellowships under Peter Eisenman and Emmanuel Petit. She received a Bachelor of Science from Georgia Institute of Technology\, graduating as Presidential Scholar and a founding member of the Shape Computation Laboratory\, receiving the Presidential Undergraduate Research Award for her work on informal housing typologies. Currently\, Brittany is practicing at Thomas Phifer and Partners and is a project designer on the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw\, Poland. Previously\, Brittany worked at Log\, Journal for Architecture and on the forthcoming book Alberti Analogous. Brittany's ongoing research considers the evolving image of the home\, its competing mythologies and ideologies\, as an index of a society’s habits of living and production as well as a measure of a culture’s collective desires.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:History Club presents: From Stage To Snapchat: Examining the History of Blackface in American Society
DESCRIPTION:If you have heard about the incidents with incoming students and blackface on Snapchat and are interested in learning more about the relevance of blackface today\, as well as its historical context as a practice\, the History Club is hosting a talk on April 3rd at 7pm in 1014 Tisch Hall. Professor Berrey will be taking a look at how Americans interacted with blackface throughout recent history\, going back to playbills in minstrel shows popular in the 19th century to more modern representations in mass media. The talk will definitely be an informative and engaging one for those wishing to understand how this depiction has continued to harm and denigrate black Americans\, and why this practice is still being invoked today.

DESCRIPTION:The United States government\, in collaboration with Google\, Facebook\, Twitter and other information technology corporations\, is implementing massive restrictions on Internet access to socialist\, antiwar and progressive websites. Capitalist governments in Europe and throughout the world are enacting similar repressive policies.\n\nThe ruling class launched this desperate campaign in a desperate response to growing mass opposition to social inequality and war. Workers and young people around the world are using the Internet to coordinate struggles and share information outside of the control of the corporate media.\n\nThe World Socialist Web Site\, which has been a principal target of the censorship campaign\, is leading a fight against the greatest attack on free speech since the Second World War. In January\, it called for an International Coalition of Socialist\, Antiwar and Progressive Websites Against Internet Censorship to expose what is taking place and coordinate opposition.\n\nThis meeting will explore the political context of efforts to censor the Internet\, examine the pretexts used to justify the suppression of free speech (e.g.\, “fake news”)\, and discuss a political strategy to mobilize the working class in defense of democratic rights.

SUMMARY:Performance:English Beat
DESCRIPTION:One tempestuous weekend in March 1979 was not only the date of the Three Mile Island nuclear incident\, but also\, in Birmingham\, England\, the very first show by a nascent band known as The Beat. The band hailed from working-class\, industrial Birmingham\, England\, and it was a time of social\, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came The Beat\, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance beat. The band was all about inclusion\, crossing over fluidly among soul\, reggae\, pop\, and punk\, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. One of the most popular and influential bands of the British Two Tone Ska movement\, The English Beat toured the world with David Bowie\, The Clash\, The Police\, The Pretenders\, R.E.M.\, and Talking Heads. Members of the band went on to form other groups\, including General Public\, International Beat\, and Fine Young Cannibals\, but frontman Dave Wakeling has kept The English Beat alive and well.
