SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamps Gallery at Springfest
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in SpringFest 2018\, taking place on Wednesday\, April 4 from 11 - 4pm on the Diag. The gallery will present interactive and interventionist work by Stephanie Brown (Stamps MFA ‘18) and Jessica Frelinghuysen (Stamps Adjunct Professor). The Stamps Gallery booth will be located in the Art & Music tent. \n\nSpringFest is a SXSW-style gathering designed to promote innovation\, creativity\, and community while displaying the achievements of University students and organizations.\n\nThe Diag is on the U-M Ann Arbor central campus north of South University Street\, east of State Street\, and south of North University.\n\nThis event is being presented in partnership with MUSIC MATTERS and is part of a new series of ongoing gallery events titled Stamps Gallery OFFSITE. \n\nStephanie Brown: Return the Melanin\n\nDo you ever question the use of skin color in history books\, movies\, video games\, and TV? What if someone or something told you they were darker than you are used to seeing would you believe\, accept\, or reject the thought? \n\nReturn the Melanin works with artists of color to provide re-imagined perspectives of important figures in history. Theses depictions are available by request and free of charge in the form of sticker and poster products. Take one share one and repeat! Post your RTM product discoveries on Instagram using #returnthemelanin\n\nLaunder is a body of work that critiques skin color discrimination and encourages positive associations with brown skin care by subverting common laundry care symbols. The do not bleach symbol is screen-printed onto black T-shirts with a bleaching agent\, when worn by people of color the message can be fully embodied and become an announcement of skin color affirmation. \n\nAbout the Artist: \n\nStephanie Brown is of Jamaican descendant\, born and raised in sunny south Florida. She holds a BFA in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and is currently completing her MFA degree in interdisciplinary arts and Museum Studies Certificate at the University of Michigan.  Embracing moments of discomfort\, her creative practice encourages critical consideration of self-perceptions based on skin color\, confronting the complexity of colorism and its influence worldwide. In her recent exhibition at the Stamps Gallery\, Am I Enough\, her work challenges the psychological decisions we make as we construct our identities by pulling from dominant media\, the judgement of our communities\, and self-affirming family values or lack thereof. \n\nJessica Frelinghuysen: Listening Indicators (for Stamps Gallery)\n\nListening Indicators is a wearable print\, when folded and worn\, indicates that the user is listening\, even though they would rather not. The form reflects the gesture of cupping one’s hand around the ear to amplify sound. Good for relationships\, bartenders\, students\, or anybody who wants to give someone their full attention. The piece is designed to engage the public in discussions about relatable problems of how communication\, ubiquitous device usage\, and manners affect the atmosphere of public spaces today.  We invite anyone to try them on and use them. It’s exciting to get a crowd wearing these and interacting with one another.\n\nAbout the Artist: \n\nJessica Frelinghuysen sculpts objects and events to help negotiate social anxieties and continually seeks to reconcile the separation between the individual and society. Her work has been shown at the International Print Center\, The Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art\, and recently at The Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. Jessica has been awarded residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts in California\, Sculpture Space in New York and the Santa Fe Art Institute and is the recipient of a 2016 Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. She lives in Hamtramck\, Michigan\, a small city nestled within the bosom of Detroit\, and holds a teaching position at the University of Michigan. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Brown Bag Series | Supertranslations and Superrotations at the Black Hole Horizon
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we study the asymptotic symmetries in the near-horizon region of extremal and non-extremal black holes. By prescribing a physically sensible set of boundary conditions at the horizon\, we derive the algebra of asymptotic Killing vectors\, which is shown to be infinite-dimensional\; it includes two sets of supertranslations and two mutually commuting copies of the Virasoro algebra. We define the surface charges associated to these large diffeomorphisms and evaluate them for different stationary black hole solutions. We finally discuss the relationship between these horizon charges and the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) ones by computing the memory effect produced at the black hole horizon by a gravitational shock wave sent from null infinity.

DESCRIPTION: In this talk\, I will discuss the molecular design of organic\nstructural materials that mimic the ability of living systems to\nprotect\, report\, heal and even regenerate themselves in response to\ndamage\, with the goal of increasing lifetime\, safety and\nsustainability of many manufactured items. I will emphasize recent\ndevelopments in frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP)\nto manufacture composites with minimal energy consumption. The talk\nwill also present a workflow for the design\, evaluation\, and\ndevelopment of new “mechanophores”\, a term that has come to mean a\nmolecular unit that chemically responds in a selective manner to a\nmechanical perturbation. Mechanophores are building blocks for the\ndevelopment of mechanoresponsive materials with protection and sensing\nfunctions. The impact and challenges of introducing these capabilities\nin real-world situations will be mentioned.\n \n \nJeffrey Moore (UIUC)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Plasma Treatment of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Ion Exchange Brine Solutions: Reactor Design Challenges and Physicochemical Processes at the Plasma-liquid Interface
DESCRIPTION:Plasma-based water treatment (PWT) uses electrical discharges formed in contact with or in the vicinity of water to degrade chemicals in contaminated water. Plasma in these conditions is capable of producing a diverse range of highly reactive species with low energy input without chemical additives\, which makes PWT a promising treatment technology. PWT has not yet proven to be viable\, largely due to a lack of knowledge for designing effective plasma reactors and targeting appropriate applications. We have developed a bench-scale PWT process to treat perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in groundwater with high enough efficiency to rival leading technologies. A scaled-up continuous-flow prototype demonstrated PFASs degradation rates far exceeding those of the bench system. A more practical solution for PWT of high flowrates of PFAS-containing water is to combine it with an ion exchange (IX) system wherein the plasma treats the IX regeneration brine\, a complex chemical mixture of PFASs\, methanol\, and sodium chloride. In this talk development of PWT systems will be discussed\, correlating bulk liquid transport with the plasma-liquid interface dynamics using analytical measurements and fluid dynamics modeling.\n\nThagard received her BS in chemical engineering from the U. of Zagreb in Croatia and her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Florida State U. Before coming to Clarkson\, Thagard held post-doctoral appointments at Toyohashi U. of Technology in Japan and at Colorado State U. Her expertise is in electrical discharge plasma processes with a focus on theoretical and experimental investigations of fundamental plasma chemistry in single and multiphase plasma environments. Her research group is pursuing national and international interdisciplinary projects\, including: (i) Development of chemical reactors for plasma-assisted water treatment\, (ii) Plasma sterilization and food decontamination\, and (iii) Plasma-assisted conversion of liquid fuels into hydrogen-rich gas. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Meeting Dirac’s Challenge:\nProgress Towards a Theory of Correlated Electrons in Materials and Molecules\n\n
DESCRIPTION:This talk will present an overview of recent progress towards the solution of one of the grand-challenges of modern science: computing the properties of interacting electrons in molecules and solids. I will argue that the theoretical methodology has reached the point where we can say with confidence that the two dimensional Hubbard model captures key aspects of the high transition temperature superconductivity observed in layered copper-oxide compounds and can delineate which phenomena are not accounted for by this model. I will further summarize the current status of our extension of the methods to fully physically realistic systems\, emphasizing the areas of theoretical uncertainty and the prospects for resolution. \n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Seminar in Quantitative Methods (ISQM): Clustering Analysis Through Integrating Diverse\, High Dimensional and Noisy Data Sets
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\n\nSample clustering has been studied in statistics for many decades and recent advances in collecting diverse\, high dimensional\, and noisy data present new challenges for clustering analysis. For example\, high-throughput genomic technologies coupled with large-scale studies including The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project have generated rich resources of diverse types of omics data from thousands of patients to better understand disease etiology and treatment responses. Clustering patients into subtypes with similar disease etiologies and/or treatment responses using multiple omics data has the potential to improve the precision of clustering than using a single type of omics data. In another setting\, single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology can generate genome-wide expression data at the single-cell levels from hundreds to thousands of cells. One important objective in scRNA-seq analysis is to cluster cells where each cluster consists of cells belonging to the same cell type based on gene expression patterns. In this presentation\, we will discuss our recently developed methods for analyzing multi-omics cancer and single cell RNA data sets. The improved performance of these methods will be demonstrated on various simulated as well as real TCGA and scRNA-seq data sets. This is joint work with Seyoug Park and Hao Xu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math finance seminar 1: New developments in second order backward SDEs
DESCRIPTION:Backward stochastic differential equations extend the martingale representation theorem to the nonlinear setting. This can be seen as path-dependent counterpart of the extension from the heat equation to fully nonlinear parabolic equations in the Markov setting. This paper extends such a nonlinear representation to the context where the random variable of interest is measurable with respect to the information at a finite stopping time. We provide a complete wellposedness theory which covers the semilinear case (backward SDE)\, the semilinear case with obstacle (reflected backward SDE)\, and the fully nonlinear case (second order backward SDE).\n\nSponsored by the Van Eenam Lecture Series

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Selma and the Liuzzo Murder Trials: The First Modern Civil Rights Convictions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk with Jim Turner\, author of Selma and the Liuzzo Murder Trials: The First Modern Civil Rights Convictions. About the book:\n\nIn 1965 the drive for black voting rights in the south culminated in the epic Selma to Montgomery Freedom March. After brutal state police beatings stunned the nation on \"Bloody Sunday\,\" troops under federal court order lined the route as the march finally made its way to the State Capitol and a triumphant address by Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. But within hours klan terror struck\, claiming the life of one of the marchers\, Viola Liuzzo\, a Detroit mother of five. Turner offers an insider’s view of the three trials that took place over the following nine months—which finally resulted in the conviction of the killers. Despite eyewitness testimony by an FBI informant who was riding in the car with the killers\, two all-white state juries refused to convict. It took a team of Civil Rights Division lawyers\, led by the legendary John Doar\, to produce the landmark jury verdict that klansmen were no longer above the law.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 Seminar: Daniel Steffy\, Oakland University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mixed-integer linear programming is an optimization paradigm with a wide range of applications. Most software to solve these problems is based on inexact floating-point computation\, which sometimes leads to erroneous results. Although it is possible to compute exact solutions by using exact precision arithmetic in all steps of the algorithms\, this slows computation time considerably. Modern techniques for computing exact solutions employ a combination of numerical methods\, interval arithmetic\, and exact computation in novel ways to increase speed while still guaranteeing correct results. This talk will survey some of these methods and further describe how their computed results can be independently validated. In particular\, how solvers can be adapted to output a proof of their conclusions using a limited number of simple inference rules which can be verified by a separate program that is much simpler than the optimization solver. This talk is based on joint work with Kevin K.H. Cheung and Ambros Gleixner.\n \nBio: Dan Steffy is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Oakland University. He earned his PhD in Algorithms\, Combinatorics and Optimization from Georgia Tech in 2010\, and has spent time as a research staff member at the Zuse Institute Berlin. His research interests include integer programming\, computational optimization\, graph theory and applications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can a Hamburger Build World Peace? Lessons on How Food Builds Community One Plate at a Time
DESCRIPTION:We are living through a revolution where food has become the medium for a generation that includes chefs as political actors\, farmers as standard bearers of environmental sustainability\, and businesses who have embraced the notion investment in the entire supply chain is good for the bottom line. Food has become a means for young social entrepreneurs to use their business expertise to promote social good with new apps and new inventions. But with all this excitement can food build world peace? In an age when refugees are seeking new lives\, can learning to cook build back hope and respect? Through the lens of food\, we can explore how this basic component of our survival is also a powerful tool to help create dialogue and encourage conversation in these turbulent times. \n\nJohanna Mendelson Forman has built a reputation for addressing longstanding issues with new perspectives and innovative ideas. She has become one of the leading voices in the emerging movement of Social Gastronomy. Her frontline experience as a policy maker on conflict and stabilization efforts drove her interest in connecting the role of food in conflict\, resulting in the creation of Conflict Cuisine®: An Introduction to War and Peace Around the Dinner Table\, an interdisciplinary course she teaches at the School of International Service at American University in Washington\, DC\, where she is an Adjunct Professor. Mendelson Forman is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Center\, where she heads the Food Security Program. \n\nMendelson Forman has written extensively about food and conflict and Latin America and has lectured on food-related topics at the Smithsonian Resident Associates Program\, Johns Hopkins University Bologna Campus\, New York University’s Washington Program and at the United States Pavilion of the 2015 World Expo in Milan\, Italy. Mendelson Forman holds a J.D. from Washington College of Law at American University\, a Ph.D. in Latin American history from Washington University\, St. Louis\, and a Master’s of International Affairs\, with a certificate of Latin America studies from Columbia University in New York. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Mindful Death: Buddhist Approaches to Dying in Taiwan
DESCRIPTION:The Quality of Death (QOD\, made by Intelligence Unit of The Economist) Index of the Hospice Care in Taiwan is ranked No. 6 out of 80 countries\, first in Asia. Hospice palliative care aims at providing all-encompassing services for patients with terminal diseases suffering from physical\, mental\, social and spiritual symptoms and pain. Since clinical Buddhist chaplaincy training has been practiced for more than 15 years in Taiwan\, there are two topics I would like to discuss in this talk: (1) the comparison between spiritual care and mindfulness-based care: body\, mind\, and spirit as compared with body\, feeling\, mind\, and Dharma\; and (2) the relationship between the Fourfold Mindful Establishment and the triune brain model (i.e.\, the innermost reptilian brain\, the old mammalian brain\, and the neocortex). Finally\, I will show two videos. One is a case-study demonstrating Buddhist chaplaincy training in hospice & palliative care in Taiwan. It illustrates methods for helping terminal stage patients during the Buddhist chaplaincy training. The other video documents natural burial in the Memorial Garden of Dharma Drum Mountain.
