SUMMARY:Other:Seeking Student Speakers for Honors Graduation
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to share a story about your college experience with your graduating Honors class? The Honors Program is looking for up to three Honors graduating seniors to speak briefly (approximately three minutes each) at the Honors graduation ceremony on Thursday\, April 26 at 11:00 AM in the Crisler Center. Might that be you?\nWe’re not looking for the standard graduation talk that summarizes the experience of the last four years and exhorts everyone to go out and do great things. Rather\, we’d like you to address some specific aspect of your undergraduate education that was significant and has an Honors connection. In recent years students have talked about the friendship and support that came from the cohort of Honors concentrators in a departmental Honors concentration program\, about a particularly interesting study abroad experience\, about an inspiring instructor or thesis advisor\, about their thesis research\, about teaching a section of Honors 135\, about participation in Honors Summer Fellows\, and so on. (There is no reason you should avoid those topics if they are relevant to you: we’re looking for good stories\, whatever their topic.)\nIf you are interested in speaking\, please email Dr. Lisa Broome (Lbroome@umich.edu) by April 5 with the topic you would like to address and a summary of what you plan to say. You do not need to prepare the talk unless you are selected. We will try to see that a variety of topics and interests are represented.\n\nImportant Notes and Timeline \n\n*** Please check your final exam schedule to make sure you will be able to attend the required rehearsal on 4/25 and the commencement ceremony on 4/26. If you have an exam conflict\, you may still apply\; please note the exact circumstances when you submit your proposal. ***\n\n4pm\, Thursday\, April 5: Deadline for topic proposal emails\nTuesday\, April 10: All applicants notified of results\nNoon\, Monday\, April 16: Draft of speech due [2 double-spaced\, 12pt.-font typed pages]\nApril 16-19: Recommended revisions sent to speakers\nBy Monday\, April 23: Required individual speech rehearsal (make an appointment with Lisa before end of day 4/23).\nNoon\, Tuesday\, April 24: Final draft of speech due for closed-captioning\n1-2pm\, Wednesday\, April 25: Required rehearsal at Crisler Center\n11am\, Thursday\, April 26: Honors Commencement Ceremony

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison takes a satirical look at historical narratives—exploring issues of race\, design\, mortality and industry—by making use of analog and digital technologies. For his solo show\, \"Abstract Ancestry\,\" at University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities\, Harrison will produce a suite of mechanical drawings with his homemade 3D printer. Using books and documents containing problematic historical portrayals as the substrate for his drawings\, Harrison is able to explore issues of representation. The exhibition also examines abstraction\, setting the printers to work at a low resolution ensures that imperfections and variability come through in these machine-produced drawings.\n\nOn April 5\, join us as we celebrate the opening of our final exhibition of the academic year with our 2018 Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence Matthew Angelo Harrison. Harrison will be in conversation with curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MOTIVATED REASONING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Raimi is Assistant Professor of Public Policy at University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy. A social and environmental psychologist\, she studies how social goals \ninfluence climate change mitigation. Professor Raimi is particularly interested in how people compare themselves to others\, how message framing shapes attitudes toward climate policy\, and how adopting one sustainable behavior affects subsequent decisions. She completed her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Duke University and a Postdoc at the Vanderbilt University Institute for Energy and Environment.\n\nDespite the growing scientific consensus about human-caused climate change\, climate beliefs in the U.S. are sharply divided along political lines. One explanation for this polarization is motivated reasoning: People seeking out information with the goal to maintain their existing beliefs. This talk explores how people use motivated reasoning to reject evidence that challenges their worldviews\, their social goals\, or their belief in their own superiority\, and discusses ways to discuss climate change that better account for these biases. \n\nThis is the fifth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Behavioral and Social Sciences: Real World Applications. The next lecture will be April 12\, 2018. The title is Understanding Charitable Giving Decisions: New Evidence and Recommendations.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Dancing Ground Zeroes in Japan and the United States: Eiko & Koma’s Transnational Choreographies of the Nuclear
DESCRIPTION:Since their 1979 dance\, Fission\, the New York based\, award-winning Japanese/American choreographers Eiko & Koma have made a series of dances that critically engage nuclear issues. Evoking the ground zeroes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\; Trinity\, New Mexico\; New York City\; and most recently Fukushima\, dances such as Land\, Offering\, Fragile\, and Eiko’s solo project A Body in Places create complex transnational geographies between Japan and the U.S. and raise questions of mutual implication in the nuclear age. Contrary to the nuclear discourse bound to butoh that fixes the post-nuclear firmly in the past\, Eiko & Koma’s engagement with the nuclear invites audiences to perceive the ongoing repercussions of nuclear disasters. \n \nRosemary Candelario\, Assistant Professor of Dance at Texas Woman’s University\, specializes in the Japanese avant-garde movement form\, butoh. She is the author of Flowers Cracking Concrete: Eiko & Koma's Asian/American Choreographies (Wesleyan University Press 2016) and co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance (forthcoming 2018). She has studied\, taught\, and performed butoh across the United States and around the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminars | Black Holes & Number Theory: How to Bootstrap a Black Hole via Modular Forms
DESCRIPTION:In the language of statistical physics\, an extremal black hole is a zero temperature system with a huge amount of residual entropy. Understanding which class of counting formulas can account for a large degeneracy will undoubtedly unveil interesting properties of quantum gravity. In this talk I will discuss the application of Siegel modular forms to black hole entropy counting. The role of the Igusa cusp form in the D1D5P system is well-known in string theory\, and its transformation properties are what allow precision microstate counting in this case. We implement this counting for other Siegel modular and paramodular forms\, and we show that they could serve as candidates for other gravitational systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The diffusion of opioids in the family
DESCRIPTION:Presented with the Computational Social Science Initiative through the Center for the Study of Complex Systems.\n\nAbstract:\nOpioids are an effective\, widely prescribed\, and highly addictive class of drugs used for pain management. The consequent broad access to these drugs has contributed to the opioid epidemic\, and drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under 50. Using data on hundreds of millions of medical claims and 19 million opioid prescriptions in Massachusetts between 2010 and 2015---by then the 7th highest state for death rate by opioid-related overdoses---I will introduce evidence that the diffusion of these medications within families has contributed to the proliferation of opioid consumption. Moreover\, these effects are unlikely to be explained away by shared traits\, environment\, or mate selection. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Justin Du Bois\, Ph.D.\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSmall molecule neurotoxins serve as important chemical and pharmacologic tools for studies aimed at understanding the highly complex ionic mechanisms of electrical transmission in cells. The voltage-gated sodium ion channel is a primary site of action for many of these poisonous substances. No less than six discrete receptor sites for neurotoxins have been identified on the pore-forming alpha-subunit of the channel. This lecture will attempt to illustrate how molecular design and chemical synthesis of toxins and toxin derivatives\, together with the tools of molecular biology and electrophysiology\, can be used to interrogate sodium channel structure and function.\n\nSpeaker:\nJustin Du Bois earned his B.S. in Chemistry from University of California\, Berkeley\, and then earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology in the lab of Dr. Erick Carreira. He did his postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the lab of Dr. Stephen J. Lippard. Dr. Du Bois joined the faculty at Stanford in 1999 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. His scientific pursuits stem largely from his interest in chemical design\, molecular recognition and physical organic chemistry. His lab has two primary foci\, the first and longest-standing of which is aimed at developing chemical processes and catalyst systems for precision-controlled modification of C–H bonds.\n\nBoxed lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Archaeology of Japanese American Internment during World War II
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, the United States government imprisoned over 120\,000 individuals of Japanese heritage\, 2/3rds of whom were American citizens. This talk examines archaeological and archival data from a World War II internment camp in Idaho - the Kooskia Internment Camp - to investigate how Japanese American prisoners were treated by prison officials and the United States government. Prisoners at the Kooskia Internment Camp were to be treated by the standards outlined in the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention of 1929. The Geneva Convention details the basic necessities afforded to prisoners of war and non-citizens\, such as access to leisure activities\, alcohol\, and dental\, ophthalmological care\, and medical facilities. Kooskia's data provide a localized\, on-the-ground account of how the United States government interpreted and responded to the stipulations outlined in the Geneva Convention.

SUMMARY:Other:Illuminating acetylation’s dark matter with chemoproteomics
DESCRIPTION: A paradox of modern acetylation biology is that the while number of sites of acetylation has climbed rapidly\, the number of enzymes thought to catalyze this process has stayed relatively constant. Here we describe the utility of chemical proteomic methods to discover and characterize novel mechanisms of acetylation in endogenous cellular contexts. Our studies highlight an expanded landscape of regulatory acetylation in gene expression control\, as well as new strategies to investigate the metabolic regulation and small molecule inhibition of acetyltransferases in cells. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nJordan Meier (National Cancer Institute)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math finance seminar 2: Branching particles representation for nonlinear Cauchy problems
DESCRIPTION:We provide a probabilistic representations of the solution of some semi linear hyperbolic and high-order PDEs based on branching diffusion. This is a direct extension of our previous work in the context of semi linear parabolic PDEs based on the classical Mc Kean representation for KPP equations. These representations pave the way for a Monte-Carlo approximation of the solution\, thus bypassing the curse of dimensionality. We illustrate the numerical implications in the context of some popular PDEs in physics such as nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation\, a simplified scalar version of the Yang-Mills equation\, a fourth-order nonlinear beam equation and the Gross- Pitaevskii PDE as an example of nonlinear Schr ̈odinger equations.\n\nSponsored by the Van Eenam Lecture Series

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - Data-driven modeling and control of nonlinear dynamical systems
DESCRIPTION:Eurika Kaiser\neScience Institute and Mechanical Engineering Department\nUniversity of Washington\n\nHigh-dimensional\, nonlinear\, multi-scale phenomena\, such as turbulence or the spread of infectious diseases\, are ubiquitous\; however\, we still lack a good understanding of these as analytically tractable models remain an exception. The lack of simple equations and unprecedented amount of available high-fidelity data are leading to a paradigm shift in how we interact with complex nonlinear systems. Leading approaches stem from data-driven methods which have the potential to discover new mechanisms\, models and control laws and are driven by the tremendous advances in computing power\, new sensors and infrastructures\, and advanced algorithms in machine learning.\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss recent advances in data-driven\, equation-free architectures connected to the Perron-Frobenius and Koopman operators leveraging advances in sparsity-promoting techniques and machine learning. Koopman operator theory has emerged as a principled framework to obtain linear embeddings of nonlinear dynamics\, enabling the estimation\, prediction and control of strongly nonlinear systems using standard linear techniques. In addition\, I will discuss work related to statistical modeling in fluids and how to exploit sparsity in dynamical systems for modeling and sensing. The presented work is demonstrated on Hamiltonian systems and different high-dimensional nonlinear systems from fluids.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nEurika Kaiser received her Diploma degree (M.Sc.) in physical engineering from the Technical University Berlin\, Germany\, in 2012\, and the Ph.D. degree from Universite de Poitiers\, France\, in 2015. She is currently Moore/Sloan Data Science and Washington Research Foundation Innovation in Data Science Postdoctoral Fellow at the eScience Institute and Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Washington.

DESCRIPTION:Konstantinos Konstantopoulos\, Ph.D.\nDepartment of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering\nThe Johns Hopkins University\n\n\n“Think Inside the Channel: Lessons from Cancer Cell Migration in Confinement”\n \nAbstract:\nDuring the process of cancer metastasis\, tumor cells separate from a primary tumor\, migrate across blood vessel walls into the circulation and disperse throughout the body to colonize distant organs. This seminar will present an interdisciplinary approach\, integrating engineering fundamentals with molecular cell biology techniques to understand cancer cell locomotion in engineered microenvironments\, which recapitulate the three-dimensional longitudinal channels encountered in vivo. This presentation will focus on how tumor cells sense\, adapt and respond to different physical microenvironments. The seminar will also discuss how this knowledge has led to the development of a microchannel assay capable of distinguishing aggressive from non-aggressive cancer cells for diagnosis\, prognosis and precision care of cancer patients.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Demographic compensation and tipping points in climate-induced range shifts
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the demographic mechanisms setting geographical range limits may be key to predicting how species’ ranges will shift under climate change. Using data from a 20+ year demographic study of two tundra plants across their latitudinal ranges in North America\, I show that different demographic rates change in opposite directions (“demographic compensation”) across latitudes\, which may buffer populations across the range from environmental change. However\, we have also found evidence that compensation may break down suddenly once a warming tipping point has been surpassed. Evidence for local adaptation suggests tipping points may paradoxically be reached sooner at the colder rather than the warmer end of the gradient\, which may lead to counterintuitive range shifts under climate change.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/gyfwX8J6hgE

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Columbus the Muslim
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Columbus lived the vast majority of his life in a Mediterranean world in which the Ottoman and Mamluk Empires dominated the eastern part of the sea and were in constant economic\, political\, and confrontational interaction with the Christian states of Europe. This talk considers the importance of Islam in shaping Columbus's life and voyages. In doing so\, it thinks critically about the role of Islam in the Spanish decision to send him across the ocean and in the early history of the Spanish Caribbean. It furthermore uses this Muslim history of Columbus to suggest ways of analyzing early modern periodization and the place of Islam in the making of the modern world.\n\nAlan Mikhail is professor of history at Yale University. He is a historian of the early modern Muslim world\, the Ottoman Empire\, and Egypt. His publications include Under Osman’s Tree: The Ottoman Empire\, Egypt and Environmental History (University of Chicago Press\, 2017)\; The Animal in Ottoman Egypt (Oxford University Press\, 2014)\; Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt: An Environmental History (Cambridge University Press\, 2011)\; and the edited volume Water on Sand: Environmental Histories of the Middle East and North Africa (Oxford University Press\, 2013).\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law and Economics Workshop: A Fundamental Error in the Law of Torts: The Restriction of Strict Liability to Uncommon Activities
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nCourts generally insist that two criteria be met before imposing strict liability. The first––that the injurer’s activity must be dangerous––is sensible because strict liability possesses general advantages in controlling risk. But the second––that the activity must be uncommon––is ill-advised because it exempts all common activities from strict liability\, no matter how dangerous. Thus\, the harm generated by the large swath of common dangerous activities––from hunting\, to construction\, to the operation of railroads––tends to be socially excessive. After developing this theme\, the Article addresses the question of how the uncommon activity requirement could have arisen and finds that its legal pedigree is problematic: it was invented by the authors of the first Restatement of Torts. The conclusion is that the uncommon activity requirement for the imposition of strict liability should be eliminated.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Opening Reception & Artist Conversation for Abstract Ancestry: Machine Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of our final exhibition of the academic year with our 2018 Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence Matthew Angelo Harrison. Harrison will be in conversation with curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nAbout the installation:\n\nDetroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison takes a satirical look at historical narratives—exploring issues of race\, design\, mortality and industry—by making use of analog and digital technologies. The exhibition also examines abstraction\, setting the printers to work at a low resolution ensures that imperfections and variability come through in these machine-produced drawings.\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.
