SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents On Blue: Photographic Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Loosely based on the concept of the early 20th century group f64\, the f8collective is composed of female contemporary Chicago photographers who all happen to have strong family ties to Michigan. The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstract Ancestry: Machine-Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison takes a satirical look at historical narratives—exploring issues of race\, design\, mortality and industry—by making use of analog and digital technologies. For his solo show\, \"Abstract Ancestry\,\" at University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities\, Harrison will produce a suite of mechanical drawings with his homemade 3D printer. Using books and documents containing problematic historical portrayals as the substrate for his drawings\, Harrison is able to explore issues of representation. The exhibition also examines abstraction\, setting the printers to work at a low resolution ensures that imperfections and variability come through in these machine-produced drawings.\n\nOn April 5\, join us as we celebrate the opening of our final exhibition of the academic year with our 2018 Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence Matthew Angelo Harrison. Harrison will be in conversation with curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Museums Seminar - The inside story: how computed tomography is revolutionizing natural history museums in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Scientific collections serve the global research community as storehouses of biodiversity information\, and recent advances and increased access to Computed Tomography (CT) are opening up new avenues for integrative collections-based research. Through CT\, we are able to generate three-dimensional volumes of external and internal anatomy for morphological descriptions\, as well as quantitative analyses of surfaces and volumes such as with geometric morphometrics. As the method is not destructive\, we can easily integrate rare and important specimens into our studies and can capture and quantify traits that otherwise would be difficult in traditional preparations\, such as osteoderm distributions or cranial endocasts. Through contrast-enhanced microCT scanning we can also visualize soft tissues\, such as muscles\, nerves\, and arteries\, facilitating the study of complex anatomical systems. The images and 3D volumes that result form this work can be easily shared and repurposed for other forms of future research and education (including 3D printing). Over the next four years\, 16 US institutions will collaborate to create the open vertebrate (oVert) network: an unprecedented library of vertebrate morphology that contains high-resolution 3D anatomy of over 20\,000 museum specimens. These emerging digital 3D resources will renew interest in phenotypic diversity and evolution and make our scientific collections accessible to more people than ever before.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Free Speech: A WeListen Staff Session
DESCRIPTION:This session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome!\n\nPLEASE NOTE- We have reached capacity for this event. Please complete the RSVP below to be placed on the waitlist. We will contact participants from the waitlist if cancellations occur. Thank you!\n\nRSVP here: http://myumi.ch/aVD3D\n\nWeListen began as a student organization with the goal of sparking small-group conversations (not debates!) between people with divergent political viewpoints.\nEach session aims to help participants understand the underlying values and experiences that drive others’ political views. We are proud to be hosting the first staff session of WeListen on the topic of free speech.\n\nFree speech is a fundamental right\, guaranteed for all Americans. However\, Richard Spencer’s recent request to speak on campus has some questioning if free speech should have limits. His request has raised questions including: how is hate speech defined? Are protests that infringe on others' First Amendment rights justified? How can campuses effectively manage requests from controversial speakers?\n\nOur aim is to bring liberals\, conservatives\, libertarians\, and everyone across the political spectrum together for a constructive conversation about free speech. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue\, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives.\n\nLunch will be served!\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the the Ginsberg Center\, LSA Dean's Office\, and LSA Psychology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Fred Feinberg\, Joseph Handleman Professor of Management\, Professor of Statistics and Chair of Marketing\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Mathematical psychologists and statisticians have\, over the last 50 years\, refined methodologies for zeroing in on individuals' preferences using heterogeneous discrete choice tasks. Yet visual design elements\, due to their high‐dimensional\, holistic\, and interactive nature\, do not lend themselves well to measurement using extant methods for preference elicitation. \n\nWe incorporate real‐time\, interactive\, 3D‐rendered configurations into such measurement frameworks\, using scalable machine learning algorithms to adaptively update visual designs. At the heart of the method is a parametric decomposition of an object's geometry\, along with a novel\, adaptive “bi‐level” query task that can estimate individuals’ preferences among visual designs.\n\nWe illustrate the method’s performance through simulation and a field test for the design of a mid‐priced sedan\, using real‐time 3D rendering and an online panel. Bayesian part-worth estimation and online training via ranking SVM allow the proposed method to elicit trade-offs between design and more traditional elements generally\, and also pinpoint which design details differentially drive (heterogeneous) preferences.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Domestic Preferences and Strategic Contexts: Why America Fights 'Dumb Wars'\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This paper develops a general theory of how US administrations define their collective policy preferences and\, from those preferences\, produce national strategies on interstate war and diplomacy. The paper applies this framework to variations in US strategy in the Middle East under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The theory begins with identifying whether an administration’s national security principals favor expansionism or non-expansionism in three main interest areas: force projection\, regime behavior\, and energy supplies. These collective preferences constitute the foreign policy posture of an administration\, but they do not determine policy in isolation. Collective preferences intersect with the redistributive implications of a given strategic context: How much do the administration’s national security principals expect to gain or lose if the United States pursues aggression or negotiation with the target country? The resulting framework helps to explain why an expansion-inclined president (Bush) invaded Iraq while engaging Iran\, and why an expansion-averse president (Obama) promoted regime change in Libya but exercised restraint toward Syria. Beyond the selected cases\, the theory can help students of international politics understand America’s recurring pursuit — but also its periodic avoidance — of seemingly “dumb wars” in the Middle East.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Materialities: Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:How do the materials of antiquity\, from everyday objects and paintings to monumental buildings\, make their way into contemporary lives and scholarship? What bearing have these traces of ancient material culture had on contemporary culture? Toggling between antiquity and the present\, noted art historians Annabel Wharton and Jaś Elsner will discuss the modern afterlives of ancient materials—their transmissions\, citations\, and repurposings. In concert with this year’s Frankel Institute theme of Jews and the Material in Antiquity\, the conversation will also address the vexed role of Jews and Judaism in the formation of modern conceptions of materiality and historiography on visuality and religion.\n\nEvent Accessibility: There is an elevator and accessible and gender neutral restroom on the first floor of the building. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation\, contact the Judaic Studies office at judaicstuies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Convergence of Coldness and Catastrophes: Spengler's Bones\, Kittler's War\, and Koselleck at Stalingrad.
DESCRIPTION:Who understands wars better -- the winners or the losers? It has been said that winners write history\, but maybe defeat is intellectually more beneficial because losers are under greater pressure to understand their fate than winners. With the centenary of Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West in mind\, the talk will look at Spengler's cultural morphology and Friedrich Kittler's media theory as two related\, retroactive German attempts to lose world wars better than the other side won them.\n\nDr. Geoffrey Winthrop-Young is the Department Head of Central\, Eastern and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He teaches in the German and Scandinavian sections of CENES. His initial area of research was the 18th century\, but he is now primarily interested in theory issues at the intersection of media theory\, theories of evolution and extinction\, and cultural techniques. Together with Jussi Parikka and Anna Tuschling\, Winthrop-Young edits the new series “Recursions: Theories of Media\, Materiality and Cultural Techniques” from Amsterdam University Press.\n\nPart of the Winter Colloquium Series for the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Germanic Languages & Literatures at 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Dehumanization Makes Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Nazis described Jews as vermin. White Americans described Black Americans as beasts. And today\, the militant Buddhists of Myanmar characterize the Rohingya as subhuman animals. These are all examples of dehumanization\, a phenomenon that often paves the way to mass atrocity. In my 2011 book Less Than Human I described dehumanization as the attitude of conceiving of others as less than human. However\, some scholars have objected that this view is not consistent with the fact that dehumanizers often acknowledge the humanity of their victims\, and have suggested that dehumanization\, as I have described it\, does not occur. In this talk I will explain why this concern should not lead one to reject the reality of dehumanization. Using two examples of spectacle lynchings—extremely gruesome lynchings of African Americans that were attended by hundreds or thousands of spectators—I will explain how this problem can be addressed in a way that leads to a deeper\, more nuanced\, and more disturbing account of what dehumanization is and how it works.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Test Design and Minimum Standards
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nAn uninformed seller may demonstrate quality by disclosing results from a certification test\, or may hide unfavorable results. We consider a setting with strategic test choice and disclosure policy\, and characterize the unique equilibrium outcome. Although without strategic disclosure all tests yield the same expected sale price\, the agent’s ability to hide results leads to a unique test choice. While in equilibrium the agent generally prefers more informative tests\, the amount of information disclosed in equilibrium is inefficient and simple pass/fail tests are likely to dominate the market. Minimum testing standards can improve informational efficiency and reduce test-taking costs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Legal Uniformity in American Courts
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIntercircuit splits occur when two or more circuits on the U.S. Courts of Appeals issue different legal rules about the same legal question. When this happens\, federal law is applied differently in different parts of the country. Intercircuit splits cause legal non-uniformity\, are an impediment to lawyering and judging\, and have practical consequences for American law. Despite intercircuit splits' importance\, there is almost no quantitative research about them. We created a unique original dataset that includes intercircuit splits that arose between 2005 and 2013. For each intercircuit split\, we identified every circuit and every case involved. These data reveal that one-third of intercircuit splits are resolved by the Supreme Court. Two-thirds are not. We show that those that will be resolved are resolved within three years after they arise\, and we show that splits are more likely to be resolved when they exhibit contemporaneous and growing disagreement. However\, many such splits are never resolved by the Supreme Court. Those that are not resolved by the Supreme Court continue to yield litigation and do not dissipate on their own\, and the likelihood of resolution does not rise as time passes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Memories of a Despot -- Historical Antecedents for Executive Constraints
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What are the historical determinants of comparative executive constraints? In this paper\, I explore memory of tyranny\, i.e.\, the shared experience of having lived and survived under tyranny\, as one plausible determinant. I expect executive constraints to be stronger when state institutions are formulated shortly after a reign of personalistic despotism\, when collective memories of tyranny are fresh. I evaluate the proposition in two ways. First\, I employ crossnational panel data on authoritarian regimes to compare executive constraints following the end of an authoritarian administrations. I find that constraints increase more following the end of a personalist tyranny than for other forms of authoritarian rule. Second\, I narrow my scope to post-colonial regimes\, comparing executive constraints in directly vs. indirectly colonized states. I find that post-colonial executive constraints tend to be stronger in indirectly ruled colonies\, where colonial oppression was exercised by a local\, homegrown tyrant rather than a foreign viceroy. I complement the quantitative analysis with illustrative case studies and survey data on public opinion.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Fluids of the Lower Crust and Upper Mantle: Deep is Different
DESCRIPTION:Deep fluids are important for the evolution and properties of the lower crust and upper mantle in tectonically active settings. Uncertainty about their chemistry has led past workers to use upper crustal fluids as analogues. However\, recent results show that fluids at >15 km differ fundamentally from shallow fluids and help explain high-pressure metasomatism and resistivity patterns. Deep fluids are comprised of four components: H2O\, non-polar gases (chiefly CO2)\, salts (mostly alkali chlorides)\, and rock-derived solutes (dominated by aluminosilicates and related components). The first three generally define the solvent properties of the fluid\, and models must account for observations that H2O activity may be quite low. The contrasting behavior of H2O-gas and H2O-salt mixtures yields immiscibility in the ternary system\, which can lead to separation of two phases with fundamentally different chemical and transport properties. Thermodynamic modeling of equilibrium between rocks and H2O using simple ionic species known from shallow-crustal systems yields solutions possessing total dissolved solids and ionic strength that are too low to be consistent with experiments and resistivity surveys. Addition of CO2 further lowers bulk solubility and conductivity. Therefore\, additional species must be present in H2O\, and H2O-salt solutions likely explain much of the evidence for fluid action in high-P settings. At low salinity\, H2O-rich fluids are powerful solvents for aluminosilicate rock components that are dissolved as previously unrecognized polymerized clusters. Experiments show that\, near H2O-saturated melting\, Al-Si polymers comprise >80% of solutes. The stability of these species facilitates critical critical mixing in rock-H2O systems. Addition of salt (e.g.\, NaCl) changes solubility patterns\, but aluminosilicate contents remain high. Thermodynamic models indicate that the ionic strength of fluids with Xsalt = 0.05 to 0.4 and equilibrated with model crustal rocks have predicted bulk conductivities of 10-1.5 to 100 S/m at porosity of 0.001. Such fluids are thus consistent with conductivity anomalies commonly observed in the lower crust (e.g.\, the “G” anomaly)\, and are capable of the mass transfer commonly seen in metamorphic rocks exhumed from the lower crust and subduction zones.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Insight from biophysical studies on the mechanism of strong Ca2+-dependent membrane binding by synaptotagmin-7 \"
DESCRIPTION:Synaptotagmin (Syt) proteins comprise a 17-member family of exocytosis regulators\, several of which serve as Ca2+-sensing triggers for SNARE-catalyzed membrane fusion. Ca2+ dependence arises from two C-terminal C2 domains (termed C2A and C2B) that insert into anionic lipid membranes upon binding two or three Ca2+ ions. Of the Ca2+-sensitive isoforms\, Syt-7 has recently emerged as a topic of broad interest due to its extreme Ca2+ sensitivity and roles in a diverse range of secretion events. Both C2 domains of Syt-7 (but especially C2A) bind and insert into membranes at much lower Ca2+ concentrations and dissociate more slowly than the corresponding domains from the more widely studied isoform Syt-1. We have used a combination of spectroscopic\, single-molecule\, and computational approaches to understand the physical-chemical origins of this strong membrane binding. The results show intriguing distinctions between Syt-1 and Syt-7\, including deeper hydrophobic membrane insertion and more efficient membrane bridging by the Syt-7 C2A domain as well as diminished interdomain cooperativity in the Syt-7 C2AB tandem. Similarities between Syt-1 and Syt-7 inform models for a common mechanism of Syt/SNARE/Ca2+-mediated membrane fusion. Differences may contribute to the known points of divergence between the two isoforms\, such as the rate of fusion pore expansion.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Embodied Object: Recensions of the Dead on Roman Sarcophagi
DESCRIPTION:The Roman sarcophagus uses the visual forms of consolatory celebration to frame the actual body of the deceased. Its rhetorics of eulogy are not merely performative but are directly existential\, since its form and function are entirely dependent on the act of containing a corpse. In sarcophagi\, the frequency of portraiture as a major element of decoration adds a further frisson to the question of embodiment. This paper touches on all forms of portraiture on Roman sarcophagi but focuses on three-dimensional reclining statues carved on lids – both fine finished portrait heads and so-called ‘unfinished’ or ‘blank’ and sometimes ‘pseudo-animate’ faces – in relation to their play with the thematic of embodiment\, presence and absence. \n\nProfessor of Late Antique Art at Oxford\,\nHumfry Payne Senior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College\nVisiting Professor of Art and Religion at the University of Chicago\nLeverhulme Senior Research Keeper at the British Museum

He quickly fell in love with freedom and flow of the dance and started intensive training. After roughly a year training locally in Knoxville\, TN\, he was brought on as an assistant instructor at ZoukEra dance company. To further his dance knowledge\, Brad spend the next four years traveling both the across the country and internationally to train with as many artists as possible\, something he still does today as he believes dance knowledge is never complete. In 2014\, Brad founded his own company\, Armada Zouk\, which now hosts weekly classes\, socials\, and choreography training in Knoxville and assists in weekly classes in Asheville. In addition to dance\, he has earned a PhD in biomedical engineering with a focus in biomechanics. This gives Brad a unique background in truly understanding how the body is designed to move and function\, providing many insights into the realm of dance. \n\nAfter completing the doctoral program\, he spent May and June of 2016 training in Sao Paulo in Rio De Janeiro with multiple instructors including Renata Peçanha\, the founder of zouk. After leaving Brazil\, he spent the next two months hosting an intensive 8 week\, 32 hour series in Kona\, Hawaii\, a city which he returns to frequently to help continue the growth of the local students. In November of 2017\, Brad completed a NeoZouk techniques instructor certification course with Marco (Mafie Zouker) Mendonça so that he can help grow both Rio Style Zouk and NeoZouk techniques throughout the country and internationally.
