Our aim is to improve the education, and well-being in the underserved and politically underrepresented communities of Quito in addition to raising discussions and awareness of the Ecuadorian culture and society at the University of Michigan and beyond.\u00a0Our students come from low resource backgrounds and due to their financially destitute situations, we provide our students with two meals a day, hygienic supplies, and school supplies to help give them the tools they need to succeed through education, encourage our students to continue onto higher education, and provide them with some of the basic necessities every human being should have access to. \u00a0We are trying to collect school supplies In order to allow our tutors to continue creating fun and engaging lesson plans and to give our students the best experience possible.\u00a0We are looking for any school supplies that you may have left over from the school year or if would be willing to donate any new supplies as well. Humanitarian efforts to ameliorate water, health, and food insecurity in Haiti often rely on top-down strategies\u2014themselves constrained by funding mechanisms, internal mission and bureaucracy, and implicit bias\u2014that, while sometimes effecting improvements, may perpetuate colonial dynamics.\r\n\r\nMany elements considered essential for life, such as water, health care, and food, become readily appropriated through neoliberal market logics as commodities available only to those who can afford them, leading to vast and ever expanding disparities across the globe\u2014the consequences of which bear most heavily on historically marginalized communities. Despite a successful anti-slavery revolution that resulted in liberation from French colonial rule in 1804, Haiti has suffered tremendously at the hands of transnational structural racism, foreign military occupation, and mandated austerity measures.\r\n\r\nWith generous support from the U-M Library, and inspired by the radical potential of collective solidarity and mutual aid embodied in libraries and information services, Koski-Karell is embarking on a documentary film project about water access in a rural Haitian community still plagued by the cholera epidemic (Haiti's first) that started nearby in October 2010. In an attempt to decolonize the traditional aid model deployed in Haiti, the film also serves as a tool for extending Haitian voices and raising funds to support a community-directed water project where it has been locally identified as most needed.\r\n\r\nEmergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they Perspectives from Wild Animals\r\n\r\nStress is constant in our lives. From the breakup of a relationship, the death of a loved one, or the frustrations associated with your morning commute, many of us unfortunately experience daily stressors associated with these types of situations. These adverse experiences can be associated with the release of stress hormones such as cortisol. If the situation that is causing us stress is short term, we usually cope and recover. However, if we experience stress for a long period of time (\u201cchronic stress\u201d), this may have very negative effects on our physical and mental health and overall well-being. From an evolutionary perspective, this is somewhat puzzling. Why would such a system evolve where our physiological responses to challenging situations have negative consequences to our health and well-being? If stress is \u201cbad\u201d, then why do all animals (not just humans) experience it? Could there be situations in which stress is actually good, at least from an evolutionary perspective? This presentation will focus on understanding the benefits of stress in wild animals from an evolutionary perspective. Perspectives from Wild Animals\r\n\r\nStress is constant in our lives. From the breakup of a relationship, the death of a loved one, or the frustrations associated with your morning commute, many of us unfortunately experience daily stressors associated with these types of situations. These adverse experiences can be associated with the release of stress hormones such as cortisol. If the situation that is causing us stress is short term, we usually cope and recover. However, if we experience stress for a long period of time (\u201cchronic stress\u201d), this may have very negative effects on our physical and mental health and overall well-being. From an evolutionary perspective, this is somewhat puzzling. Why would such a system evolve where our physiological responses to challenging situations have negative consequences to our health and well-being? If stress is \u201cbad\u201d, then why do all animals (not just humans) experience it? Could there be situations in which stress is actually good, at least from an evolutionary perspective? This presentation will focus on understanding the benefits of stress in wild animals from an evolutionary perspective.
