DESCRIPTION:Approximately 1\,200 tornadoes hit the United States per year and because of their unpredictable and violent nature\, tornadoes remain a focal point in extreme weather conversations. In this Teach-Out\, you will learn about the frequency of tornadic events both in the United States and globally\, the methods used to assess the strength of tornadoes\, what research tells us about their origins and structure\, and tornado preparedness and response strategies. You will also explore to what degree scientists believe the frequency and/or intensity of tornadic storms are affected by climate change. \n\nThe Teach-Out will address the following questions:\nWhat is a thunderstorm and how do some become severe?\nWhere are tornadic thunderstorms likely to form?\nWhat are the combination of conditions needed to create a tornadic thunderstorm?\nHow can you best prepare for a tornado in your community?\nIs there any reason to believe that the frequency or intensity of tornadoes is likely to increase in the future due to climate change?\n\nThis Teach-Out is part of the Extreme Weather Series\, a multi-part examination of the causes of various extreme weather events and to what degree climate change impacts the frequency or intensity of these events. The exhibit showcases changes in students\, tools and technology from the school’s pioneering early days to its standing today as one of the top dental schools in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

DESCRIPTION:John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories\, religious spaces\, government facilities\, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Aimee Lee works in Cleveland and is an artist\, papermaker\, Fulbright Scholar\, author and the leading hanji (Korean paper) researcher and practitioner in the US. Fusing contemporary fashion ideas with traditional clothing\, Lee connects past and present through everyday dress creations in paper. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets.

Light\, a fine art bronze sculptor and park designer\, has garnered prizes in the US and Europe including the Prix de France from the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français\, the largest art show in France. His studio is located in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Brodbeck studied Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) in Tokyo with Yoshisuke Funasaka. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Many people have felt a strong sense of place in her work. Still more connect with the sense of calm\, contemplation and deep reflection that place can evoke.

The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies.

DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

The exhibit focuses on seven classic stories: Aladdin\, Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella\, Hansel and Gretel\, the Little Mermaid\, Little Red Riding Hood\, and Peter Pan. Drawing on the rich collection of children’s literature in the Special Collections Research Center\, the books range from late nineteenth century editions to contemporary pop-up books. By showcasing different takes on each story\, the exhibit explores the variation in how these tales are told and illustrated.

SUMMARY:Other:Dissertation Defense: Some Contributions to High Dimensional Mixed-Effects Logistic Regression Models
DESCRIPTION:Generalized mixed-effects linear models (GLMMs) extend the generalized linear models (GLMs) and the mixed effects models by adding random effects to the linear predictors of the GLMs. The mixed-effects logistic regression model is a typical example of the GLMMs\, which is widely used when the response variable is discrete or categorical and has a group structure. \n\nHigh dimensional mixed-effects logistic regression model refers to the scenario when the number of fixed effects coefficients p is (much) larger than the sample size N\, while the rank q of the random effects variance-covariance matrix is much smaller than the sample size N. Our goal in this dissertation is to infer about the unknown high dimensional fixed effects coefficients of the high dimensional mixed-effects logistic regression models. The challenges of point estimation in such a model are several folds. Firstly\, its negative log-likelihood function is non-convex in general\, which causes generic difficulties in computing its minimum. Secondly\, the log-likelihood function and its gradient are intractable integration that are challenging to approximate. Numerical integration techniques like Laplace method may work when the dimension of integration is low (Schelldorfer et al. 2013)\, but the performance deteriorates when the dimension grows. \n\nIn this dissertation\, we contribute to solving high dimensional mixed-effects logistic regression models with several algorithms\, their convergence analysis\, and a non-asymptotic high dimensional estimation error bound of a solution. Among our algorithms\, the stochastic proximal gradient and iterated filtering are two stochastic algorithms\, while a second order approximate and the fixed-effects approximate algorithms are deterministic ones. We introduce and extend the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property of a function to a stochastic setting to analyze the convergence behavior of the stochastic proximal gradient algorithm and prove the convergence of the second order approximate algorithm in the non-convex and non-smooth setting. In establishing the estimation error bound of the fixed-effects approximate solution\, we extend the restricted eigenvalue condition to a stochastic setting and show that this condition holds with high probability in our problem. In the development of the iterated filtering algorithm\, we use the iterated filtering to approximate the forward step in a proximal gradient algorithm\, which leverages the idea of using the mean of a function (the pseudo proximal map) to approximate the mode of the function whose value is not accessible. \n\nWe have conducted extensive numerical studies of our algorithms to illustrate their convergence behavior and statistical properties\, and also compared their performance in different data settings. We have applied our algorithms to a breast cancer data which identify genes as signatures of the patients' 5-years metastasis status - a major clinical indicator of breast cancer survivor.

DESCRIPTION:​Quaker Oats forged a new path in the entertainment industry by jointly marketing consumer packaged goods and a major motion picture in 1971\, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Having never made a motion picture before\, their foray into the filmmaking industry was unexpected and unprecedented. The company saw this film as an opportunity to essentially make a feature-length commercial for their new line of Wonka candy products.\n\nStudents in Matthew Solomon's class\, SAC 355: Authorship and the Archive\, culled though hundreds of production documents related to the film to curate an exhibit that tells a little known behind-the-scenes story about one of the most beloved films.

A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department of Physics | Cluster Polylogarithms with Applications to Scattering Amplitudes
DESCRIPTION:I will present several new results in the intersection of cluster algebras and polylogarithm functions motivated by the study of scattering amplitudes. For example\, I will show how the iterated integral structure of polylogarithms can be intimately tied to the structure of cluster algebras through a property called cluster adjacency. As an example I will give a polylogarithm function of weight 4 related to the A_2 cluster algebra. I will then discuss systematic ways in which larger cluster algebras can be associated with more complicated polylogarithm functions\, such as scattering amplitudes\, through various subalgebra decompositions.

SUMMARY:Other:Fused Triazoles are P2X7 Antagonists: Synthetic and pre-clinical strategies targeting the treatment of depression
DESCRIPTION:                                                                                                                    Current data continues to indicate an important relationship between neuroinflammation and neuropsychiatric disorders. We have explored inhibitors of the P2X7 receptor\, a target that resides along a pro-inflammatory cascade and is expressed systemically as well as in the brain. This presentation will focus on the synthesis and characterization of novel 5\,6-fused P2X7 antagonists. Highlights include the development of a single pot dipolar cycloaddition reaction / Cope elimination sequence to access 1\,4\,6\,7-tetrahydro-5H-[1\,2\,3]triazolo[4\,5-c]pyridines that contain a synthetically challenging chiral center. DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Houston\, Edmonson wrote her first song on a school bus at age nine. The Texas native evolved her signature style in Austin’s local club circuit for several years before touring throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, and Japan. Kat's 2012 release \" Way Down Low\" was described by The New York Times as “fresh as a spring bouquet\,” while 2014's \"The Big Picture\" confirmed the promise of this vintage yet totally contemporary artist by topping jazz charts. Now Kat is back in Michigan with a new album\, \"Old Fashioned Gal. Kat says\, “I wrote these songs while holed up in my Brooklyn apartment during the winter of 2016. I had a terrible\, reoccurring cold that winter and was often laid up in bed. I’d go back and forth from watching 1930s movies on Turner Classic Movies to working on a song. While writing this album\, I realized that I was seeing what looked like scenes from a film in my head—a film not yet made. I ultimately sat down and wrote an entire outline for a screenplay—a musical\, of course—with this music\, the score. I processed a great deal of self-doubt in order to write this hopeful record. 'Old Fashioned Gal' is about believing in yourself even when it seems no one else will.” Brooklyn guitarist-songwriter Matt Munisteri opens.
