SRMP techniques must accommodate non-convex constraints, be robust to disturbances, and be implementable on-board spacecraft with limited computational capabilities. Three novel SRMP techniques are developed, and simulations illustrate implementations of each method. \r\n\r\nFirstly, an invariance-based SRMP technique is proposed. Planned maneuvers transition a spacecraft between specified Natural Motion Trajectories (NMTs) while avoiding obstacles and accommodating control constraints. The method is based on a graph search applied to a \u201cvirtual net\u201d with nodes corresponding to NMTs, and adjacency rules based on safe positively invariant tubes built around each NMT. \r\n\r\nSecondly, a SRMP technique is developed for satellite inspection. An information collection model is developed and used to construct a control law based on the local gradient of the information rate. This control law drives the spacecraft on a path along which the rate of information collection is strictly increasing. \r\n\r\nFinally, a SRMP strategy is proposed to generate a formation containing an arbitrary number of vehicles. Although much is understood about this process, unanswered questions remain that, if answered, could inspire more efficient artificial light harvesting technologies. The technique of two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy has shown promise in addressing some of these questions. In this talk, I will discuss 2D studies of the Bacterial Reaction Center (BRC), a pigment-protein complex that serves as a model system for investigating the initial steps of photosynthesis. By exciting the BRC in the near-IR and detecting the response over a broad portion of the visible spectrum, we are able to uncover previously obscured coupling between BRC pigments and begin to further elucidate the kinetic pathways of energy transfer and charge separation.\r\n\r\nTalks will be given each Wednesday and will be 30 minutes in length, with time after for questions. Yet, our understanding of combinatorial integration of multiple inputs and its age dependence is still limited. One of the well-studied examples of such regulation is catabolite repression - a phenomenon where preferred carbon source (e.g., glucose) represses the pathway required for the consumption of alternative carbon sources (e.g., galactose). As a model system, we study how yeast response to hundreds of environments with different carbon sources as a function of time and age. We found that, in contrast to the textbook view, instead of merely inhibiting galactose utilization when glucose is above a threshold concentration, individual cells respond to the ratio of glucose and galactose, and based on this ratio determine whether to induce genes involved in galactose metabolism. We investigate the genetic architectures that can result in a ratio sensing and derive the conditions in which the optimal switching strategy involves preparation and when it is changed from threshold-sensing to ratio-sensing. Karowe and his students investigate the potential ecological consequences of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide. They focus on the ways nutritional quality and defensive chemistry of plants change under elevated CO2, and how such changes affect the growth, survivorship and behavior of insect herbivores and parasitoids. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 to include higher trophic levels. This work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.\r\n\r\nDr. Karowe will focus his all-camp lectures, offered on both May 30th and June 28th, on the urgent climate change challenges facing the Great Lakes Region, and will offer an overview of related research at the Biological Station.
