SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flora & Fauxna: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Patty Carroll’s highly intense\, saturated color photographs have led to her recognition as one of Photolucida’s Top 50 Photographers (2104\, 2017). Flora & Fauxna is a still life series about women and their homes using decorative fabric\, artificial flowers and ceramic birds to create a sumptuous\, and often humorous\, ornate world. Unlike traditional still life images\, these photographs show no horizon line\, dramatic lighting\, or symbols of death and decay. Birds in many cultures are messengers between heaven and earth\, acting as a bridge between the mundane and spiritual life. In Carroll’s work\, birds represent the human desire to escape gravity and reach the level of angels.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Not Your Grandmother’s Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Patricolo has been creating\, engineering and executing dolls for 25 years\, and teaching doll making for 20. She studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina\, and has been a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2002. When teaching\, Patricolo feels that\, “Watching someone go from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can’t believe I did this!’ is pretty fantastic!” Her inspiration often comes when she isn’t looking for it: in songs and books when a line rings out so clearly it cannot be ignored\, or a piece of fabric that refuses to be left behind. Patricolo is now based in North Carolina\, but lived most of her life in Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Water’s Presence: Landscapes in Oil
DESCRIPTION:Cathy VanVoorhis’ oil landscape paintings represent her experience of the healing power of nature. VanVoorhis travels to lakes\, rivers and streams to witness the ecology and beauty of natural coastlines of Michigan. She finds inspiration in the writing of naturalists such as Rachel Carson\, and the understanding of the intricate web of all life. This series of paintings focuses on the healing that comes from contemplation of bodies of water. This beautiful element can bring a meditative calm and inner peace\, as one feels a connection to the timeless forces of life. VanVoorhis is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. Additional generous support is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society\, Washtenaw Council for the Arts\, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.\n\nFor the first time in the last three decades\, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including\, oil\, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper\, aluminum foil\, and tissue to balsa wood\, toothpicks and other found objects. She creates mixed media paintings\, cut outs\, rubbings and installations that reimagine the agency of mundane objects and invite viewers to look again.\n\nExhibition Dates: Thursday\, May 31 - Sunday\, September 9\, 2018\nExhibition Reception: Thursday\, May 31\, 2018 from 6-8 pm \nA conversation with Ellen Wilt: June 9\, 2018 from 2-3 pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography
DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. By extending the limits of perception\, these witty and provocative works invite us to see [through to] new visual possibilities.\n\nLead support for See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Historical collecting practices have had a lasting impact on representations of Africa\, its history\, culture\, and life today. Labeled as ‘unknown’ or ‘anonymous\,’ African artists became associated with broad cultural styles and collective identities rather than personal creativity and individual agency. The exhibition Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa includes artworks from both named and unrecorded\, contemporary and historic artists to tell an alternative story. It explores how the changing attributes of an ‘African’ artist’s identity\, and constructions of African identity more broadly\, have shaped perceptions of Africa outside of the continent.\n\nLead support for Unrecorded: Reimagining Artist Identities in Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of Afroamerican and African Studies and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Ryan Tibshirani\, Associate Professor\, Departments of Statistics and Machine Learning\, Carnegie Mellon University
DESCRIPTION:We describe some recent advances in distribution-free prediction intervals in regression\, using the conformal inference framework. This framework allows for the construction of a prediction band for the response variable using any estimator of the regression function. The resulting prediction band preserves the consistency properties of the original estimator under standard assumptions\, while guaranteeing finite-sample marginal coverage even when these assumptions do not hold. We discuss two major variants of our conformal framework: full conformal inference and split conformal inference\, along with a related jackknife method. These methods offer different tradeoffs between statistical accuracy (length of resulting prediction intervals) and computational efficiency. We also develop a new method for constructing valid in-sample prediction intervals called rank-one-out conformal inference\, which has essentially the same computational efficiency as split conformal inference. Lastly\, if time permits\, we will discuss a number of open challenges related to conformal inference.\nMuch of this represents joint work with my CMU colleagues Jing Lei\, Max G’Sell\, Alessandro Rinaldo\, and Larry Wasserman.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dance Modern Lab Master Class Series: Donald McKayle Technique by SMTD Profs. Bill DeYoung and Robin Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer\, director\, and educator Donald McKayle (1930-2018) received numerous honors and awards\, including an Outer Critics Circle Award\, a NAACP Image Award\, and many others. In 2005\, McKayle was honored at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. and presented with a medal as a Master of African American Choreography. He was named by the Dance Heritage Coalition as \"one of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: the first 100.\" This session will be led by professors of dance Robin Wilson and Bill DeYoung\, both of whom had connections to McKayle's work in different stages of their careers. DeYoung will lead exercises and Wilson will teach repertory material from one of McKayle's dances.\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/105438851\n\nEach Modern Lab session features a different guest artist teaching a master class and sections from their repertory. This panorama of the contemporary dance field is presented to broaden the students’ awareness of potential career possibilities. Each guest artist conducts a 30-minute technique class/warm-up and then teaches repertory that is performed by the class. In the final 15 minutes\, faculty coordinator Bill De Young conducts a Q & A with each artist\, discussing their career\; their recommendations for transitioning from student to professional\, and what they look for when they audition dancers for their projects.\n\nThis event is supported in part by the EXCEL Lab.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE285 Undergraduate Seminar: Dissecting Boeing’s Middle of the Market Aircraft
DESCRIPTION:Mike Stengel\, Associate\, AeroDynamic Advisory\n\nThe rumored Next Midsize Airplane (NMA)\, also known as the Middle of the Market (MoM) or 797\, potentially represents Boeing’s first clean-sheet aircraft design since the introduction of the 787 in 2011. The aircraft is a challenging design concept\, sitting at the intersection of narrowbody and widebody product lines\, and also faces competition from existing aircraft models. Furthermore\, Boeing has corporate goals to learn the lessons of its past to reduce aircraft development risk\, and increase its services business. Given all these factors\, what could the proposed design look like? What are the key technologies that Boeing could incorporate? What will be new and what will remain the same from previous aircraft models? What clues do Boeing’s public comments and perceived corporate strategy reveal? In this seminar\, Mike Stengel\, an Associate with consulting firm AeroDynamic Advisory in Ann Arbor\, MI will dissect Boeing’s next clean-sheet aircraft and offer a perspective\, taking into account business realities and available technologies.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nMike Stengel is an Associate at AeroDynamic Advisory\, a boutique consultancy focused exclusively on serving the aerospace industry. His particular area of focus is in the air transport Maintenance\, Repair\, & Overhaul (MRO) and manufacturing sectors. Mike has contributed to projects in multiple disciplines for a variety of aerospace clients\, including airlines\, manufacturers\, maintenance providers\, economic development agencies\, and private equity firms. Previously\, Mike was an Associate at ICF International’s Aerospace & MRO consulting practice from 2014-2016. Prior to that\, he interned at United Airlines in their San Francisco\, CA engine and APU maintenance facility\, as well as at AeroStrategy in 2011. Mike began flying at the age of 12\, and has since received his Commercial License and Instrument Rating (ASEL)\, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering (cum laude).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Values at the End of Life: Toward a Sociology of Economization
DESCRIPTION:Over the past forty years\, “the end of life” has become the center of extensive economic\, policy\, ethical\, and medical discussions. Health economists measure and evaluate its cost\; ethicists debate the morality of various approaches to “end-of-life care”\; policymakers ponder alternative “end of life”-related policies\; and clinicians apply a specialized approach (hospice and palliative care) to treat patients whom they diagnose as being at “the end of life.” This talk analyzes the proliferation of conversations on “the end of life” as emblematic of a peculiar moment in human history. Ours is a period where modern growth stagnates and the main challenge developed societies face becomes delineating the limits of human agency and governing populations within these limits. Drawing on a combination of historical and ethnographic analysis of the work of palliative care clinicians in three California hospitals\, I analyze how the limits of what can be done\, medically and financially\, to prolong life are communicated to severely ill patients and families. I use this empirical case to flesh out different dimensions in the concept of economization\, which has recently attracted much theoretical attention in economic sociology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Misinterpreting Others and the Fragility of Social Learning (with Mira Frick and Yuhta Ishii)
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nWe study to what extent information aggregation in social learning environments is robust to slight misperceptions of others' characteristics (e.g.\, tastes or risk attitudes). A population of agents obtain information about the state of the world both from initial private signals and by observing a random sample of other agents' actions over time\, where agents' actions depend not only on their beliefs about the state but also on their idiosyncratic types. When agents are correct about the type distribution in the population\, they learn the true state in the long run. By contrast\, our first main result shows that even \"arbitrarily small'' amounts of misperception can generate extreme breakdowns of information aggregation\, where in the long run all agents incorrectly assign probability 1 to some fixed state of the world\, regardless of the true underlying state. This stark discontinuous departure from the correctly specified benchmark motivates independent analysis of information aggregation under misperception.\n\nOur second main result shows that any misperception about the type distribution gives rise to a specific failure of information aggregation where agents' long-run beliefs and behavior vary only \"coarsely'' with the state\, and we provide systematic predictions for how the nature of misperception shapes these coarse long-run outcomes. Finally\, we show that how sensitive information aggregation is to misperception depends on how rich agents' payoff-relevant uncertainty is. An important design implication is that information aggregation can be improved through interventions aimed at ``simplifying'' the agents' learning environment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Interdisciplinary Workshop American Politics (IWAP)
DESCRIPTION:The positive role of negative emotions in facilitating democratic engagement has come to the fore in recent political science research. But negative emotions are not always a democratic plus. In this study\, we focus on the ways in which negative emotions drive selective news exposure\, focusing on the decision to consume news about terrorist violence. Drawing on data from a two-wave national online panel of Americans\, we find that anxiety is associated with avoidance of news stories about recent terror attacks whereas anger is linked to increased consumption and repeat exposure. Panel data confirm that emotions precede selective exposure. Those angry at terrorists in wave 1 were more likely to watch a complete news story about the Boston marathon in wave 2 whereas those who felt anxious in wave 1 were less likely to watch the entire story in wave 2. These findings are consistent with an emotion regulation model of selective news exposure in which news is consumed if it is expected to arouse positive emotions or satisfy functional goals and avoided if it is expected to arouse negative emotions. We also find that exposure to terrorist violence is politically consequential. Those who reported greater exposure to stories of terror attacks were more likely to support aggressive national security policies in wave 1. In addition\, a graphic reminder of the Boston marathon bombing in wave 2 boosted support for national security policies by enhancing the effects of anger on support for torture and increasing the effects of anxiety on support for heightened domestic surveillance policies. In developing an emotion regulation approach to the study of selective news exposure\, we underscore the political implications of a highly arousing online news environment in which news consumption is driven by both emotional and informational goals.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Exposure to Airborne Magnetite Pollution Nanoparticles: a Possible Environmental Risk Factor for Alzheimer’s Disease
DESCRIPTION:We have identified in human brains the abundant presence of tiny magnetic particles which show striking similarity to magnetite particles which occur wherever the atmosphere is polluted with combustion-derived particulate matter (PM). Until now\, all brain magnetite has been thought to be of in situ\, biological origin. Because magnetite is known to be toxic to brain cells\, exposure to these externally-formed magnetite pollution particles may be a risk factor for neurodegenerative disease\, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). \n\nRounded\, nanoscale magnetite particles – magnetite ‘nanospheres’ – are ubiquitous and abundant in urban\, airborne pollution. They form at high temperatures\, as combustion-derived\, iron-rich ‘droplets’\, which condense and partially oxidise as they cool upon airborne release. Often associated with other metal pollution particles\, they range in size from < 5 nm to more than 100 nm. Vehicles are a major source of magnetite nanospheres due to fuel combustion\, iron wear from the engine block and frictional heating from brake pads. Larger magnetite ‘spherules’ – which can grow to >10 micrometres – are often associated with industrial sources\, such as power stations. Magnetite pollution particles which are smaller than ~ 200 nm can enter the brain directly by being breathed in through the nose and then travelling through the nerve cells of the olfactory bulb. There is no blood-brain barrier with nasal delivery. Once nanoparticles enter olfactory areas of the brain through the nose\, they can spread to other areas of the brain\, including the hippocampus and cerebral cortex – regions affected in AD. \n\nThe presence in the brain of magnetite might be causally linked with neurodegenerative disease\, including AD. Magnetite contains a mix of ferric and ferrous iron\; ferrous iron has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the production of damaging reactive oxygen species (free radicals) in brain tissues. Magnetite particles have been found directly associated with AD plaques\, and may enhance the toxicity of the plaque-forming protein\, β-amyloid.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Bimolecular Concert at the Cell Membrane Interface\"
DESCRIPTION:Physicochemical and structural properties of molecules at the cell membrane interface are crucial for cellular and other biological functions\, and are implicated in numerous diseases including amyloid diseases and bacterial/viral infection. While it is obvious that such properties must be fully characterized for biotechnological and biomedical purposes\, the intrinsic complexity of the lipid bilayer environment poses tremendous challenges to most biophysical techniques and biochemical approaches. The Ramamoorthy group has been developing novel membrane mimetics and biophysical (including NMR) approaches to overcome these challenges\, and apply them to investigate dynamic structures of membrane proteins and membrane-assisted amyloid aggregation processes. The Biophysical Concert will focus on the following specific topics to highlight the challenges and recent advances: \n\n*Advantages and limitations of \"sushi-like\" lipid-nanodiscs (Ravula) \n*Probing atomic-resolution \"hugs and kisses\" that enable enzymatic function (Gentry)\n*Capturing the amyloid-ghosts red-handed by nanodiscs (Sahoo)\n*Atomic-resolution \"weed-and-feed\" action of amyloid-inhibitors (Cox)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Geotechnical Engineering Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Towards geotechnical site characterization\, seismic piezocone penetration testing (SCPTu) offers up to five separate measurements with depths from a single sounding: cone tip resistance (qt)\, sleeve friction (fs)\, porewater pressure (u2)\, time rate dissipation (t50)\, and shear wave velocity (Vs). Thus it is an expedient and economical means for obtaining stratification of the ground and the determination of a variety of soil engineering parameters for analysis and design\, including nonlinear stress-strain-strength curves for clays and sands. Calibration and documentation of selected geoparameters are presented with statistical datasets. Moreover\, direct CPT methodologies have been developed for application to shallow footings\, piling foundations\, and seismic liquefaction evaluation. Case studies are presented to show the utilization of SCPTu in geotechnics.\n\nBio: Paul Mayne. P.E.\, PhD\, a professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, has been selected as the 2018-2019 Cross-USA Lecturer for the Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. With 42 years in geotechnical engineering\, Prof. Mayne is an expert in geotechnical site characterization\, particularly the cone penetrometer\, piezocone\, dilatometer\, and seismic tests with applications to foundation systems and ground modification. He has published 320 technical papers and participated in 120 short courses.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Decasticization\,\"Dirty Work\" and Dignity: A Case Study of Arunthathiyars in Tamil Nadu
DESCRIPTION:Using the Chennai floods as a case study\, I will explore how intersections of caste\, class\, \"dirty work\,\" and the politics of cleaning continue to ignore the sufferings of Arunthathiyar (A Dalit caste group in Tamil Nadu) as they cleaned the city after the Chennai floods in 2015. This presentation particularly focuses on the invisibility and erasure of the sufferings of Arunthathiyars from public memory.\n\nUsing qualitative interviews and social media analyses\, my project explores the complex consequences of corporate irresponsibility in the mistreatment of Aruthathiyar janitors and active documentation of Arunthathiyars' sufferings by progressive and Dalit activists acting as their mnemonic communities. I will argue for the need to incorporate a social marginality perspective for disaster management to prevent dignity injuries and occupational hazards of the most marginalized groups\, such as Arunthathiyars.\n\nRam Mahalingam is a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan. He is currently the Director for the Barger Leadership Institute (https://lsa.umich.edu/bli/People1/people/RamaswamiMahalingam.html)\, and is a cultural psychologist originally from Tamil Nadu\, India.\n\nIntersectionality\, gender\, and social marginality are the major themes of his research. He has edited two books and published numerous journal articles in interdisciplinary journals. His previous research explored the relationship between essentialism and power at the intersections of caste\, social class\, gender\, race\, and ethnicity.\n\nHe is currently working on three projects:\n\n(a) dignity in the workplace\, with a specific focus on janitors in India\, the US\, and South Korea\;\n(b) mindfulness\, dignity\, and social justice\;\n(c) cell phones and the making of the self.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mason Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis singer-songwriter Mason Jennings started writing music when his six-year-old son saw an electric guitar ornament on the family Christmas tree and asked what it was. Since the late 1990s he's accumulated a songbag of consistently high quality\, covering themes from personal to political to historical. A staple of outdoor festivals from the Midwest to California\, Mason has toured with surfer-songwriter Jack Johnson and has recorded for his Brushfire label. His dozen-plus consistently fine albums place his experiences of love and family against the geography of the place where he lives. Mason comes to Michigan with a new album\, \"Songs from When We Met\,\" about his partner\, Josie. He calls it \"a love record\, a record about healing\,\" and it's sure to please his many local fans.
