SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:You Must Judge a Book by Cover: Highlights from the Julia Miller Collection of Bookbinding Models

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. Additional generous support is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography
DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. By extending the limits of perception\, these witty and provocative works invite us to see [through to] new visual possibilities.\n\nLead support for See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Brown Bag Seminars | Statistical Mechanics of a Two-Dimensional Black Hole
DESCRIPTION:The dynamics of a nearly-AdS2 spacetime with boundaries can be reduced to that of two particles in the anti-de Sitter space. We determine the class of physically meaningful wavefunctions\, and prescribe the statistical mechanics of a black hole. We demonstrate how wavefunctions for a two-sided black hole and a regularized notion of trace can be used to construct thermal partition functions\, and more generally\, arbitrary density matrices. We also obtain correlation functions of external operators. The talk is based on work with A. Kitaev in the preprint arXiv:1808.07032.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME PhD Defense: Diana Dillstrom
DESCRIPTION:Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder caused by collagen-related mutations which leads to increased bone fragility and low bone mass. Although the past decade has been marked by numerous advances in therapies that aim to stabilize the onset of metabolic bone disease\, current treatment strategies leave room for substantial improvements. The studies that will be presented in this thesis focus on designing systematic treatments for two challenging clinical scenarios that require novel approaches. All studies have been approached in the context of OI using the Brtl/+ mouse model. \n\nWhile the maternal skeleton goes through significant bone loss during pregnancy and lactation\, this period of skeletal vulnerability can exacerbate an underlying metabolic bone condition like OI. In view of increasing use of bisphosphonates (BP) in premenopausal women to treat OI\, the potential risks from long-term exposure on both maternal and neonatal skeleton during pregnancy and lactation remain inconclusive. When we assessed the maternal skeletal changes during pregnancy and lactation in Brtl/+ dams\, pregnancy led to maternal trabecular gains in vertebral bone mass\, while lactation induced maternal cortical and trabecular bone loss in both vertebra and femur. When BPs were administered prior to conception\, bone mass gains due to pregnancy were amplified and lactation-induced bone loss was prevented. However\, this protective effect was more modest with BP intervention during pregnancy\, and ceased to exist in the late stages of lactation. Despite preventing lactation-induced maternal bone loss\, no negative skeletal effects of BPs on offspring were observed. These findings indicate that during this period of significant imbalance between bone resorption and formation\, BPs can help reduce the risk of maternal bone fragility in OI by inhibiting lactation-induced bone resorption without affecting bone development in their offspring. \n\nThe second half of this thesis explores clinical cases with a critically depleted bone structure\, such as severe OI. These cases pose a challenge to current antiresorptive and anabolic therapeutics since their response mechanisms target different abnormalities in the bone remodeling cycle. In this study\, rapidly growing Brtl/+ mice were treated with a combination of pamidronate (PAM) and an anabolic (SclAb) in order to attain superior bone mass and strength effects compared to monotherapy. Results from this study showed that following one cycle of combination therapy\, a single dose of PAM in combination with SclAb led to a cumulative effect on bone mass\, but each through independent means. PAM retention mechanism led to an increase in trabecular number as the dosage increased while no additional gains were observed with SclAb. Conversely\, while PAM showed no significant effect on trabecular thickness\, SclAb induced a consistent trabecular thickening across all BP dosages. Chronic effects of concurrent administration of BP and SclAb revealed that accumulating cycles conferred synergistic gains in trabecular mass and vertebral stiffness\, suggesting a distinct advantage of both therapies combined. \n\nGiven the lack of knowledge regarding the effects of BPs during reproductive periods and lack of treatment options for patients with severe OI\, this thesis provides valuable insight that can help develop patient-specific treatment plans. By understanding the changes in bone metabolism of the clinical conditions we are trying to resolve\, and by combining this knowledge with our understanding of the targeted pathways of available pharmaceuticals\, we can strategically and systematically optimize bone therapeutics so that the best clinical outcome can be achieved.\n\nDATE: Wednesday\, September 12\, 2018\nTIME: 2:00 PM\nLOCATION: Earl Lewis Room in Rackham Building\nCHAIR: Dr. Kenneth Kozloff

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Topological Protection in Messy Matter: Edge Modes in Disordered Fiber Networks and Quasicrystals
DESCRIPTION:Topological states of matter have been intensively studied in crystals\, leading to fascinating phenomena such as scattering-free edge current in topological insulators. However\, the power of topological protection goes well beyond ordered crystal lattices. In this talk we explore how topology protects mechanical edge modes in messy\, noncrystalline\, systems. We will use disordered fiber networks and quasicrystals as our examples\, to demonstrate how topological edge floppy modes can be induced in these structures by controlling their geometry. Fiber networks are ubiquitous in nature and especially important in bio-related materials. Quasicrystals show unusual orientational order with quasiperiodic translational order. Realizing topological edge floppy modes in these noncrystalline structures may open the door to rich new physics in biological networks as well as novel designs of topological mechanical metamaterials. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 Seminar: Peter Frazier\, Cornell University and Uber
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We discuss Bayesian optimization\, a class of methods for optimizing expensive or slow-to-evaluate objective functions. We describe optimization as a decision-making task (\"where should I sample next?\")\, and show how guidance from decision theory can reduce the number of function evaluations required to find approximate optima. We discuss these methods in the context of applications from the tech sector: optimizing e-commerce systems\, real-time economic markets\, mobile apps\, and hyperparameters in machine learning algorithms. Motivated by these applications\, we present a new Bayesian optimization method designed for parallel noisy function evaluations\, the parallel knowledge gradient method. This method makes use of infinitessimal perturbation analysis within a stochastic approximation framework to find a one-step average-case optimal set of points at which to evaluate the objective function. We conclude with examples of how this and other closely-related methods are used in practice\, based on the speaker's experiences working with Yelp\, Uber\, and the Bayesian Optimization startup company\, SigOpt.\n\nThis talk is based on https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.02811 and https://arxiv.org/abs/1606.04414.\n\nBio: Peter Frazier is an Associate Professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell University. He works on learning and decision-making\, including Bayesian optimization\, multi-armed bandits\, optimization via simulation\, and incentivized exploration. He is also a Staff Data Scientist at Uber\, where he works on pricing and marketplace design. He received a Ph.D. in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University in 2009. He is the recipient of an AFOSR Young Investigator Award and an NSF CAREER Award\, and is an associate editor for Operations Research\, ACM TOMACS\, and IISE Transactions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Make It Stick - Research-based Learning Strategies You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses\, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid\, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASP Lecture | The Emergence and Transformation of the Armenian Land Question
DESCRIPTION:The Armenian land question is referred to as a distinct social problem concerning the seizure of lands belonging to Armenians in the late Ottoman period. This lecture will detail the history of the emergence and transformation of this social problem. Dr. Polatel will talk about two major trends that he argues were at the core of the Armenian land question. The first is the liberalization of the Ottoman economy and the acceleration of its integration into the world economy. These developments brought about the commodification of land along with new conceptions of property rights. The second factor shaping the transformation of the Armenian land question was the rise of territorial nationalism and demographic concerns which subsequently brought about the politicization of land and land ownership. Dr. Polatel’s lecture will examine the ways these conflicting macro trends shaped the scope and the characteristics of land disputes\, and how this problem was interpreted by different actors.\n\nPhoto Caption: Harvest in the Dzvsdan [Elmalık] village of Van \n\nPhoto Credit: Originally in Keghuni (Venice\, 1905)\, p. 65\; this image was taken from Raymond H. DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT\nFlint was already a troubled city in 2014 when the state of Michigan—in the name of austerity—shifted the source of its water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Soon after\, citizens began complaining about the water that flowed from their taps—but officials rebuffed them\, insisting that the water was fine. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha\, a pediatrician at the city’s public hospital\, took state officials at their word and encouraged the parents and children in her care to continue drinking the water—after all\, it was American tap water\, blessed with the state’s seal of approval.\n\nBut a conversation at a cookout with an old friend\, leaked documents from a rogue environmental inspector\, and the activism of a concerned mother raised red flags about lead—a neurotoxin whose irreversible effects fall most heavily on children. Even as circumstantial evidence mounted and protests grew\, Dr. Mona knew that the only thing that could stop the lead poisoning was undeniable proof—and that to get it\, she’d have to enter the fight of her life. \n\nWhat the Eyes Don’t See is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona—accompanied by an idiosyncratic team of researchers\, parents\, friends\, and community leaders—proved that Flint’s kids were exposed to lead and then fought her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth to the world. Paced like a scientific thriller\, this book shows how misguided austerity policies\, the withdrawal of democratic government\, and callous bureaucratic indifference placed an entire city at risk. And at the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant\, doctor\, scientist\, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice. \n\nJoin Dr. Mona Hanna-Attish for a talk\, Q&A\, and book signing of What the Eyes Don't See.\n\nLiterati Bookstore will be on-hand to sell copies of the book.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore
DESCRIPTION:Roots music legends Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore\, have been friends for 30 years\, but only recently realized they had never played music with each other before. So they decided in 2017 to hit the highway to swap songs\, tell stories\, and share their life experiences. They discovered that their musical roots in old blues and folk music are exactly the same. In these spontaneous shows\, audiences have enjoyed classic original compositions from the two\, and also songs from a wide spectrum of songwriters and styles— from Merle Haggard to Sam Cooke to the Youngbloods. Mutually energized and inspired by these performances\, Dave and Jimmie agreed to hit the road again in 2018 ... this time with a full band and some new stories to share.
