SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Improving Intracortical Microelectrode Interface Utilizing Nano-Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Intracortical microelectrodes provide a means to both treat and understand diseases and injuries of the nervous systems. A major hurdle to the clinical deployment of microelectrode technologies is recording instability caused by the neuroinflammatory response and lack of integration with the native tissue. The neuroinflammatory response observed after device implantation has been linked to oxidative stress that occurs due to neurological injury and disease. It is important to improve the understanding of the neuroinflammatory and oxidative stress response in order to develop next generation electrodes and treatment strategies. A potential strategy to mitigate this response involves understanding the disparity in architecture between the in vivo environment and commercially available intracortical microelectrodes. The smooth surface structure of intracortical microelectrodes implanted within the nanometer-scale architecture of brain tissue may contribute to the foreign body response. The factors examined in Dr. Ereifej’s work and how they are utilized to inform the future design of compatible intracortical microelectrodes will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. Additional generous support is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography
DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. By extending the limits of perception\, these witty and provocative works invite us to see [through to] new visual possibilities.\n\nLead support for See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | The Big House\" Project: How and Why We Made the Documentary in Observational Method and Style
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Toyota Visiting Professor 30th Anniversary Special Lecture Series\n\nNOTE: Join us for a screening of “The Big House” in the Modern Languages Building Auditorium 4 on Friday\, September 14 at 4:40pm\, sponsored by the University of Michigan Alumni Associate. Advance registration recommended: https://umalumni.force.com/s/lt-event?id=a1Q1a000008kSP4EAM\n\nIt was Professor Markus Nornes’ long time ambition to make a documentary on the Michigan Stadium\, or the Big House. His idea was to create a class through which students would collaboratively make a feature length documentary in the observational style and method. \n \n In the fall of 2016\, three professors (Markus Nornes\, Terri Sarris\, and Kazuhiro Soda) taught 13 students for 7 hours a week for a semester. They were granted almost complete access to every corner of the Big House ––– from the field to the locker rooms to the gigantic kitchen to the VIP rooms. To minimize their preconception and to make new discoveries\, they kept their pre-shoot research minimum and shot the film without much planning. The result is a 119-minute direct cinema style documentary\, entitled \"The Big House\". \n \nIn this lecture\, Kazuhiro Soda will explain his \"10 commandments\" of documentary filmmaking\, and will discuss how and why they took the observational approach to make \"The Big House\". \n \n \"10 Commandments\" of Observational Filmmaking\n 1 No research. \n 2 No meetings with subjects. \n 3 No scripts. \n 4 Roll the camera yourself. \n 5 Shoot as long as possible. \n 6 Cover small areas deeply. \n 7 Do not set up a theme or goal before editing. \n 8 No narration\, title\, or music. \n 9 Use long takes. \n 10 Pay for the production yourself.\n\nKazuhiro Soda is a Peabody Award-winning filmmaker. He served as a Toyota Visiting Professor at the Center for Japanese Studies\, University of Michigan in 2016-2017. His films have been screened at such events as Berlin International Film Festival\, Venice International Film Festival\, Locarno International Film Festival\, Busan International Film Festival\, among others\, winning numerous awards. His filmography includes \"Campaign\" (2007)\, \"Mental\" (2008)\, \"Peace\" (2010)\, \"Theatre 1\" (2012)\, \"Theatre 2\" (2012)\, \"Campaign 2\" (2013)\, \"Oyster Factory\" (2015)\, and \"Inland Sea\" (2018). He is also the author of nine books published in Japan. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to bkinzer@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE 585 Seminar Series - Laser Communication with CubeSats
DESCRIPTION:Laser Communication with CubeSats\n\nKerri Cahoy\nAssociate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics\, MIT\n\nCubeSats can be as large as a toaster oven\, only with 100 times less available power. CubeSats typically use radio frequency (RF) communication\, where higher data rates usually belong to commercial CubeSats. Due to size\, weight\, and power (SWaP) limits and regulatory constraints\, most CubeSats transmit at <2 Watts with relatively low gain antennas. With the rapid growth in CubeSats on orbit\, RF licensing is a challenge. Laser communications (lasercom) systems have access to currently unregulated bandwidth. We demonstrate how improvement in fine pointing capability allows CubeSats in Low Earth Orbit to track a ground station or crosslink to another CubeSat\, enabling lasercom up to Gbps\, with enough power efficiency to allow use of instrument payloads. Low-cost\, compact lasercom terminals can support large constellations or swarms of CubeSat sensors collecting terabytes or petabytes of remote sensing data daily. Lasercom downlinks and crosslinks within constellations and swarms can also enable exchanges of large volumes of data for autonomous onboard processing toward intelligent system planning and scheduling. We discuss MIT's Nanosatellite Optical Downlink Experiment and its corresponding Portable Telescope for Lasercom (PorTeL)\, MIT's CubeSat Lasercom Infrared CrosslinK mission (CLICK)\, and MIT's Scheduling\, Planning and Routing Intersatellite Networking Tool (SPRINT).\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nKerri L. Cahoy\, Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT\, received her B.S. (2000) in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University\, and her M.S. (2002) and Ph.D. (2008) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University working with the Radio Science Team on Mars Global Surveyor. From 2006 to 2008\, she was a Senior Payload and Communication Sciences Engineer at Space Systems Loral in Palo Alto\, CA. From 2008 to 2010\, Dr. Cahoy was a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow in Exoplanet Exploration at NASA Ames Research Center. From 2010 to 2011\, she was a Radio Science research scientist on the MIT Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) lunar mission team at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Prof. Cahoy currently holds the Rockwell International Career Development Chair. Dr. Cahoy leads the MIT Space\, Telecommunications\, Astronomy\, and Radiation (STAR) Lab\, part of the Space Systems Laboratory

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Insights into ecology and evolution of microbial populations through single-amino acid variants
DESCRIPTION:Neither the mechanisms by which genomic heterogeneity emerges within naturally occurring microbial populations\, nor how it drives the partitioning of ecological niches are well understood. Yet the increasing number of environmental metagenomes with astonishing depth of sequencing offer new opportunities to investigate evolutionary processes acting upon them\, and link genomic variation to predicted tertiary structures of genes to gain biochemical insights.\n\nCosponsored by Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/7jUvGkA0iRE

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Impostor Sea: The Making of the Medieval Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The past century of scholarship has offered two competing views of the medieval Mediterranean: a zone of intense conflict or one of intense connectivity. Grounded in Latin\, Romance\, and Arabic sources\, this lecture traces the activities of criminal merchants—smugglers—who populated the thirteenth- and fourteenth- century Mediterranean\, in order to rethink the relationship between religion and economy. I approach these figures not as “enemies of all” but rather as central to the making of the late medieval Mediterranean. I argue that efforts to regulate illicit activity reflected an important juridical turn that profoundly shaped the emergence of new religious\, territorial\, and racial boundaries. \n\nHussein Fancy’s research and writing focus on the social\, cultural\, and intellectual history of religious interaction in the medieval Mediterranean. In particular\, he is interested in projects that combine the use of Latin\, Arabic\, and Romance archival sources. His first book\, The Mercenary Mediterranean\, which recently received the Verbruggen Prize for military history\, examined the service of Muslim soldiers from North Africa to the Christian kings of the Crown of Aragon in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Far from marking the triumph of toleration\, he argued\, the alliance of Christian kings and Muslim soldiers depended on and reproduced ideas of religious difference. He is currently working on two projects. The first\, entitled The Impostor Sea: The Making of the Medieval Mediterranean\, follows the activities of criminal merchants—pirates and smugglers—in order to rethink the relationship between religion and trade. Rather than “enemies of all\,” this book argues that these figures were central to the making of new legal\, religious\, and racial boundaries in the late medieval Mediterranean. The second\, entitled The Eastern Question\, examines western views of Islam from the seventh century to the present. Professor Fancy has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Most notably\, he was a Junior Fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows\, a Carnegie Scholar\, an ACLS Fellow\, and a Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. \n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Other:Natural product bioactive peptide discovery via PepSAVI-MS
DESCRIPTION: As current methods for antibiotic drug discovery are being outpaced by the rise of antimicrobial resistance\, new methods and innovative technologies are crucial to replenish our dwindling arsenal of antimicrobial therapeutics. While natural products are a well-studied source of biologically active small molecules\, peptidyl factors contributing to their medicinal properties remain largely unexplored. To this end\, we have developed the PepSAVI-MS (Statistically-guided bioactive peptides prioritized via mass spectrometry) pipeline1 to identify bioactive peptide targets from complex biological samples. MS/MS techniques such as CID\, ETD\, UVPD are implemented for de novo characterization. To validate this pipeline\, we have demonstrated successful detection and identification of a known antimicrobial peptide\, cycloviolacin O2 (cyO2)\, from the botanical species Viola odorata. Additionally\, we have widened the known antimicrobial spectrum for V. odorata cyclotides\, including antibacterial activity of cyO2 against A. baumannii and novel anticancer activities for cycloviolacins by their cytotoxicity against ovarian\, breast and prostate cancer cell lines. The developed platform is highly versatile as it is adaptable to any natural product source of peptides and can test against diverse physiological targets\, including bacteria\, fungi\, viruses\, protozoans\, and cancer cells for which there is a developed bioassay. As such\, we demonstrate extension of this pipeline to fungal and bacterially-sourced AMPs through the identification of the killer toxin KP4 from Ustilago maydis2 and the bacteriocin Bac-21 from Enterococcus faecalis harboring pPD1. Bac-21 is identical in nucleotide sequence to another enterococcal bacteriocin\, AS-48\, but we have experimentally validated the protein sequence of Bac-21 for the first time. Additionally\, we begin to probe the vast array of botanical natural product sources to prioritize highly active species for downstream analysis. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nLeslie Hicks (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Personalizing Health Care with Economics
DESCRIPTION:Experiments and clinical trials are the \"gold standard’’ for evidence in economics and medicine. It is straightforward to analyze them to determine the average impact of a treatment. However\, even if a treatment helps patients on average\, it is much more difficult to determine if it will help all patients equally. Using methods from economics\, I re-analyze data from experiments and clinical trials with the goal of personalizing recommendations. As an economist\, I take into account not only whether the recommendations are sound\, but also who will follow them.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:I wish you were here: Postcards through the eyes of the Other
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Afroamerican and African Studies’ GalleryDAAS in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Cultural Centre of Detroit presents I wish you were here\, a postcard project\, which is curated through the Zimbabwe Cultural Centre of Detroit (ZCCD) in Partnership with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Mutare\, Zimbabwe. \n\nTwo border cities that exist as immigrant cities look at how postcards are seen as a memory of a space\, and in this case\, a fantasy of a space. Images of cultural or historical locations from one city are taken and sent to artists to illustrate from the other city more than eight thousand miles away. The postcards for the city of Mutare have been illustrated by Detroit artists similarly to the postcards of Detroit and Hamtramck where illustrated by artists in Mutare. The initial images where photographed by Aisha Haji-Jama (Detroit) and Abraham Mudefi (Mutare). This project is co-curated by Chido Johnson (ZCCD) and Elizabeth Muusha\, the Regional Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Mutare.\n\n \nParticipating artists from Detroit: Stephanie Beur\, Julie George\, Sabrina Nelson\, Clinton Snyder\, Dylan Spaysky\, Tim VanLaar\n\nParticipating artists from Mutare: Sharon Bilang\, Bradean Chitenduru\, Eben Gowero\, Biggie Matore\, Enock Matumbure\, Kundai Mharadze\, Brendon Muchabaiwa\, Christwish Mulunga\n\n \nThe exhibit will feature the original drawings for the postcards created\, as well as other selections from the centre’s archive in Detroit. I wish you were here will run from September 13–November 14\, 2018.\n\nThe exhibit is in conjunction with another ZCCD project called “The Jit Exchange.” This project is centered between Detroit Jit dance and Zimbabwean dances derived from their Jit Music. More information on the project and participating artists look at http://zccd.org/projects/jit/ The performance will be at the UMMA Aspe\, with musical support from SMTD students and alumni\, and in collaboration with the Center for World Performance Studies. \n\nThe fall exhibit for GalleryDAAS & the Jit Exchange Performance are part of the University of Michigan’s Museum of Art’s exhibit of modern African artists “Beyond Borders: Global Africa”(August 11–November 25\, 2018).\n\nZimbabwean Cultural Centre of Detroit (ZCCD) has been founded for and by artists living in Zimbabwe and outside its borders. The organization serves to dismantle naturally occurring as well as constructed boundaries\, both physical and otherwise with a view to promote community with the global and local in mind. Recognizing our role as cultural ambassadors we endeavor to foster a culture of research\, dialogue\, and production across geographic boundaries of Detroit\, Michigan and Zimbabwe. Our goal is to encourage strong ties between culture producers and residents in both Zimbabwe and Detroit acting as catalysts for critical artistic production as well as cultural exchange between these two diverse communities.\n\nGalleryDAAS exhibits contemporary black visual art. Collaborating with artists\, curators\, critics and art historians as well as with DAAS/U-M faculty and students\, the gallery celebrates and interrogates the creativity of artists of Africa and its diasporas\, not only in our exhibitions\, but through our artist residency program and by offering gallery-based learning opportunities for DAAS and the broader U-M community.\n\nGalleryDAAS presents two or three exhibitions a year during the fall and winter semesters. The gallery is located on the ground floor of Haven Hall in Room G648.\n\nFor more information\, please contact us at gallerydaas@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law & Economics: Fair Settlements in Multidefendant Torts
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nWe study the fairness of legal rules for computing damages in cases with multiple defendants. Specifically\, we develop a bargaining model of multidefendant litigation and compare the equilibria under different offset rules—rules that adjust the plaintiff’s trial award depending on which defendants settle. We find that the most common offset rule\, the pro tanto rule\, is unfair because (1) the plaintiff recovers more than the expected value of her claim and (2) each individual defendant’s expected payout bears no relation to the harm she actually caused. In contrast\, the proportionate share rule (which a minority of states currently use) is fair. We further show that the proportionate share rule has the added benefit of eliminating the strategic aspect of settlement negotiations: Co-defendants’ settlement negotiations affect each other under the pro tanto rule but not under the proportionate share rule. We briefly discuss efficiency implications and the tractability of the two rules\, before concluding that states should switch to the proportionate share rule.\n\nSarath Sanga\, co-author

DESCRIPTION:As a multi-award-winning photographer and digital artist based in Nairobi\, Kenya\, Osborne Macharia’s visual- and narrative-driven style\, known as ‘Afrofuturism\,’ has been recognized internationally not only as entertaining and Afrocentric but also as a platform for discussing critical social issues and conveying important messages on topics such as inclusion\, representation\, gender abuse\, female genital mutilation\, albinism\, conservation\, and care for the elderly. As a commercial photographer Macharia has been privileged to work with some top local and international brands\, including Marvel (Black Panther)\, Disney\, the Oprah Winfrey Network (Queen Sugar)\, Absolut\, MTV\, Volkswagen\, Forbes\, Guinness\, and Mercedes-Benz. In 2018\, Macharia was also the first Kenyan ever to be selected as a jury member for the prestigious Cannes Lions creative awards and the ADC/One Show Awards.\n\nNairobi-based “Blinky” Bill Sellanga is a singer-songwriter\, beat maker\, producer\, TED Fellow\, and one-fourth of the Kenyan art and music collective Just a Band. He is an alumnus of the Red Bull Music Academy and the OneBeat international music collaboration. In 2017\, Sellanga released his debut solo album\, titled Everyone’s Just Winging It And Other Fly Tales\, on the heels of his experimental 2016 EP\, We Cut Keys While You Wait.\n\nOsborne and Bill will premiere Remember The Rude Boy - Detroit\, a collaboration created as part of their week-long Detroit residency and supported by the Witt Visiting Artists program at the Stamps School of Art & Design. A fictional narrative about a tailor and his “up-cycled” thrift shop fashion collections\, Remember The Rude Boy is a celebration of Black Fatherhood and mentorship within the community. The initial project took place in Nairobi\, Kenya\, with subsequent editions in Accra\, Ghana\, and Johannesburg\, South Africa. In Detroit\, the artists connected with four African-American veterans to create a new edition of the project.\n\nAt the start of their Detroit residency\, Osborne and Bill will make an additional Penny W. Stamps Speaker Series presentation on Saturday\, September 8 at 7:00 PM at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (https://stamps.umich.edu/stamps/detail/osborne_macharia_with_blinky_bill_1).

SUMMARY:Performance:Davina and The Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:Davina Lozier and the Vagabonds offer \"a modern take on old-time blues and jazz\" (PennLive). They've created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows\, level A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism\, and Lozier’s commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. In 2011 Davina released her first full-length\, all-original album\, \"Black Cloud.\" It was awarded 4 1/2 stars from Downbeat. Their next release in 2014\, \"Sunshine\,\" hit number 13 on the Billboard blues chart. DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm\, Memphis soul swagger\, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill\, and tender gospel passages\, and Davina herself has been compared to Etta James\, Amy Winehouse\, Janis Joplin\, Billie Holiday\, and Betty Boop\, but comparisons don’t suffice: she's a true original. Davina & The Vagabonds have become Ark favorites—they tore up the stage at the 2017 Ann Arbor Folk Festival\, and their third album\, \"Nicollet and Tenth\,\" is their best yet.
