SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Other:Clinical Science Brown Bag: How to play 20 questions with nature and lose: Reflections on 100 years of brain-training research
DESCRIPTION:Despite dozens of empirical studies and a growing body of meta-analytic work\, there is little consensus regarding the efficacy of cognitive training. In this review we examine why this substantial corpus has failed to answer the often-asked question\, “does cognitive training work?” We first define cognitive training and discuss the general principles underlying training interventions. Next we review historical interventions and discuss how findings from this early work remain highly relevant for current cognitive training research. We highlight a variety of issues preventing real progress in understanding the underlying mechanisms of training\, including the lack of a coherent theoretical framework to guide training research and methodological issues across studies and meta-analyses. Finally\, suggestions for correcting these issues are offered in the hope that we might make greater progress in the next 100 years of cognitive training research.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Women Can’t Be Catholic Priests: A Rebuttal
DESCRIPTION:We will explore and refute the many reasons used to deny women entry to the ordained ministry of priest through the centuries. This will include the excuse the Vatican currently uses to deny women the right to answer the call of their God to the priesthood. We will briefly discuss the factual evidence that there were female priests in Christianity from 125 AD into the 9th century. There will be time for questions and discussion and some possibly surprising revelations. An outline and list of references will be provided. Over the past 50 years there has been a wealth of academic and archeologic research interest in these topics and well over 100 books have been written. \n\nInstructor Peggy Clough is a retired Physical Therapist from UMMC. She was on faculty at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison and has lectured at five other universities. Over the past 10 years she has read and researched women’s roles in Christianity and the evidence that has been discovered supporting the ordination of women in the Roman Catholic Church. The timeline she authored entitled Ordination of Women in the Catholic Church: Facts and Discoveries has been published on the internet.\n\nThis study group for those 50 and above will meet on Mondays\, 10-12\, from September 17 through September 24.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): When Words Sweat: Identifying Signals for Loan Default in the Text of Loan Applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe authors present empirical evidence that borrowers\, consciously or not\, leave traces of their intentions\, circumstances\, and personality traits in the text they write when applying for a loan. This textual information has a substantial and significant ability to predict whether borrowers will pay back the loan over and beyond the financial and demographic variables commonly used in models predicting default. The authors use text-mining and machine-learning tools to automatically process and analyze the raw text in over 120\,000 loan requests from Prosper.com\, an online crowdfunding platform. The authors find that loan requests written by defaulting borrowers are more likely to include words related to their family\, mentions of God\, the borrower’s financial and general hardship\, pleading lenders for help\, and short-term focused words. The authors further observe that defaulting loan requests are written in a manner consistent with the writing style of extroverts and liars. Using a counterfactual analysis\, the authors demonstrate that applying their finding can yield a 9.7% additional return on investment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Fits and Starts
DESCRIPTION:---\nThe 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme\, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media\, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy\, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish. \n---\n\nLecture Abstract:\nProfessor Muehlberger will be discussing the origins of her latest project\, a book now in production about how early Christians thought about death. In this lecture\, she will show that research projects\, especially book-length projects\, grow and develop over time in direct relationship to the opportunities that a writer takes to think about them. She encourages researchers to seek out opportunities to write about a project\, long before they are certain what the topic or approach will be. \n\nSpeaker Bio:\nEllen Muehlberger is Associate Professor of Christianity in late antiquity in the departments of Middle East Studies and History at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on ancient history\, contemporary religious traditions\, scholarly methods\, and Coptic and Syriac language. Muehlberger has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies. She edited Practice\, a 2017 collection of newly-translated primary sources about early Christian education\, asceticism\, and reading for the series Cambridge Editions of Early Christian Writings\, and her new book\, Moment of Reckoning: Imagined Death and Its Consequences in Late Ancient Christianity\, will appear with Oxford in Spring 2019. You can find her on Twitter @emuehlbe\n\n---\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Vox Populi Vox Dei: Populism\, Elitism and Private Reason
DESCRIPTION:Populists often claim that representatives represent the people by complying with their preferences and judgments. As Donald Trump argued in the National Republican Convention\, he represents 'the voice of the people'. Elitists\, by contrast\, argue that representatives are bound to decide wisely or correctly rather than conform blindly to popular sentiments.\n\nThis Article argues that the populist and elitist view of representation are both false. It argues that representation indeed requires the representative to endorse the perspective and worldview of the represented. But often endorsing the perspective of the represented requires the representative to act against the actual convictions of the represented. More specifically\, to look at the world 'from the perspective of the represented' the representative’s decisions ought to satisfy the condition of justifiability-to the represented\, namely\, they must rest on reasoning that is accessible to the represented.\n\nThis understanding of representation has broader implications for political theory. It implies that private reason has important role to play in democratic politics: the constituency’s basic convictions should be taken into account in the reasoning of the representatives. Yet the duty of representation\, that requires that the representatives' reasons be accessible to the represented\, is only a pro tanto duty that can be overridden by conflicting normative considerations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel on Network Neutrality
DESCRIPTION:This event will be live webstreamed. Check fordschool.umich.edu just before the event for viewing details.\nJoin the conversation: #policytalks\n\nIn her dissent from the Federal Communications Commission's May 2018 decision to end net neutrality protections\, Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel wrote\, \"The FCC is on the wrong side of history\, the wrong side of the law\, and the wrong side of the American people. It deserves to have its handiwork revisited\, reexamined\, and ultimately reversed. I raised my voice to fight for internet freedom. I’ll keep raising a ruckus to support net neutrality and I hope others will too.”\n\nIn this Policy Talks @ the Ford School event\, Rosenworcel\, a lawyer with over two decades of experience in communications policy and public service\, will explore the issues in conversation with University of Michigan's associate general counsel Jack Bernard.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Recent Developments and Applications of Improved Fast Neutron Detectors
DESCRIPTION:Neutrons are hard to detect and until recently the technique used by Chadwick to identify the neutron in the 1930s has often been used to detect them. This method\, based on recoil proton detection\, does not provide detailed information on the neutron energy spectra unless one can do a neutron time-of-flight measurement (n-ToF). This is not always possible especially with the new generation of low b.g. underground accelerators designed for nuclear-astrophysics measurements.. Even when n-ToF is feasible\, it often is not very efficient as a long flight path must typically be used together with a bunched and pulse-selected beam . Recent developments in deuterated scintillators\, both liquids and recently crystalline\, can provide efficient detection of neutrons and their energy spectra w/o n-ToF. As will be illustrated\, these new detectors are proving to be especially useful for study of many types of rare nuclear reactions\, for home-land security applications\, for ion-beam dosimetry\, and for measurements of important reactions creating problematic neutrons in the large scintillators used for neutrino oscillation measurements and for dark-matter searches. \n\n

SUMMARY:Other:Swing II\, September Series: Same Moves\, New Interpretations
DESCRIPTION:This month\, join Connor and Val for Swing II!\nDuring the September series\, we'll think about common/familiar moves and consider ways that we can make them more unique! This might mean adding your own style to a move\, or changing it up with awesome variations - how will YOU interpret and express it? Push yourself to add new levels of complexity & flavor to your dancing!\n\n====\n\nThis is a short month of classes because of Labor Day. \nSwing II will meet Mondays 7-8pm on Sep 10\, Sep 17\, and Sep 24.\n\nPAYMENT: Please pay ahead of time (via the PayPal link when you finish signup). If you need to pay with cash/check\, please bring exact change to class.\n$35 (regular price)\n$30 (community member OR students)\n$25 (student member)\n$12 (single class)\n\nREGISTER HERE: https://goo.gl/forms/gxFa7wKN5owRgQDl2\n====\n\n\nAre you ready for Swing II?\nSwing II is a semester-long\, progressive series for dancers who already have a solid understanding of Lindy Hop technique and basics (swing outs\, circles\, tuck turns\, pass bys\; 6-count and 8-count Lindy). \nWe recommend that your dance experience is equivalent to having taken AT LEAST one semester of SAA's Swing I series. \nIf you're not sure whether to take Swing I or Swing II\, message us! We'll let you know which classes are likely to be the most beneficial for you.
