SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ChE Seminar Series: Darrell J. Irvine
DESCRIPTION:Dept. of Biological Engineering\, Dept. of Materials Science & Engineering\, MIT\, Cambridge\, MA\nKoch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research\, Cambridge\, MA\nRagon Institute of MGH\, MIT\, and Harvard\, Cambridge\, MA\nHoward Hughes Medical Institute\, Chevy Chase\, MD\n\nABSTRACT\n\"Engineering immunity via chemistry and materials design: Toward an HIV vaccine and enhanced therapies for cancer\"\n\nOur laboratory focuses on applying principles from engineering and technologies from materials science\, chemistry\, and bioengineering to develop new approaches to study the immune system\, create new diagnostics\, and create next generation vaccines and cancer immunotherapies. Two examples drawn from our work on HIV vaccines and cancer immunotherapy will be described: \n\nThe kinetics of antigen availability following immunization impact follicular helper T cell priming\, germinal center responses\, and ultimate antibody production\, but clinically-relevant methods to control the duration of antigen delivery to lymph nodes in subunit vaccines are lacking. We conjugated antigens derived from the gp140 HIV envelope trimer with a peptide-polymer affinity tag containing repeating phosphoserine (pSer) residues that binds tightly to the most common clinical adjuvant\, aluminum hydroxide (Alhydrogel\, or alum). Site specific modification of HIV antigens with varying numbers of pSer groups allowed the binding strength to alum to be tuned and alum-bound antigens were presented from alum particle surfaces with a defined orientation. pSer-antigen conjugates in alum could be tuned to steadily release antigen from an injection site over multiple weeks in mice. This persistence led to improved lymph node uptake and colocalization of antigen with B cell follicles. Ultimately\, a 20-fold increase in antibody titers relative to the unmodified protein was observed four weeks after primary immunization with both pSer-eOD and pSer-SOSIP conjugates\, and long-lived plasma cells in bone marrow were doubled by immunization with pSer-modified immunogens. Additionally\, conjugation of pSer linkers to the base of SOSIP trimers minimized the formation of base-specific antibodies\, suggesting that antigen arrives in lymph nodes still bound to alum particles.\n\nIn a second example\, a novel strategy for targeting antigens and immunostimulatory agents to lymph nodes for therapeutic cancer vaccines will be described. Lymph node targeting is achieved clinically is sentinel lymph node mapping in cancer patients\, where small-molecule dyes are efficiently delivered to lymph nodes by binding to serum albumin. To mimic this process in vaccine delivery\, we synthesized amphiphiles designed to non-covalently bind vaccine antigens and adjuvants to endogenous albumin. These “albumin-hitchhiking” amphiphiles were efficiently delivered to lymph nodes following injection\, leading to as much as 30-fold amplified cellular immune responses and anti-tumor immunity. When combined with complementary immunotherapy agents\, these lymph node-targeted vaccines are capable of eradicating large established tumors in several mouse models\, providing a blueprint for curative immunotherapies. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance
DESCRIPTION:Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings\, sculptures\, dioramas\, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism\, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins\, who was the model for Duchamp's final\, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings\, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.\n\nLead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. Additional generous support is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography
DESCRIPTION:See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting\, revealing and concealing\, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget\, Robert Doisneau\, Elliott Erwitt\, Walker Evans\, André Kertész\, Joanne Leonard\, Danny Lyon\, and Joel Meyerowitz. By extending the limits of perception\, these witty and provocative works invite us to see [through to] new visual possibilities.\n\nLead support for See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Cheerful Disguise of Japanese Militarism: Geisha's Performances in the 1930’s
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Toyota Visiting Professor 30th Anniversary Special Lecture Series.\n\nDance performance of geisha was one of the leading popular entertainments in the first half of the 20th century. Of them\, Miyako Odori\, an annual dance performance of geisha of Gion\, Kyoto was especially powerful. Themes of every year’s Miyako Odori used to be happy\, cheerful\, beautiful\, gorgeous\, and were not serious at all. However sudden change was seen in the year 1933. The theme turned heavily political. They seemed to have competed to express their obedience to the national policy of the time\, choosing themes to lift the spirits for the war.\n\nMariko Okada is Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities\, J. F. Oberlin University\, Tokyo\, Japan. She received her Ph.D. from Waseda University in Tokyo in 2011. She published her book “The Birth of Kyōmai (\"Kyoto Dance\"): Inoue-ryu Dance in Nineteenth-Century Kyoto\, Japan\" (Japanese) in 2013. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to bkinzer@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Transformations of Complex N1 during the Late Horizon (AD1470-1534)\, Chincha Valley\, Perú
DESCRIPTION:The Chincha Valley of Peru has been the subject of archaeological studies since the 1920s due to its rich ethnohistoric record and wealth of archaeological sites with excellent preservation. This presentation will share recent data from Complex N1 at the site of Las Huacas. Las Huacas is a large 105-hectare agricultural center that was occupied since the Early Intermediate Period (AD200-600) into the Colonial Period (AD 1534-1821). Research in 2017 and 2018 focused on excavations within a 12 x 8-meter room and the Late Horizon (AD 1470-1534) occupation of Complex N1. During the Late Horizon\, the Chincha were incorporated into the Inca Empire and were granted a prestigious position. Excavations of the room within Complex N1 recovered a wealth of information about craft production\, mortuary traditions\, and architectural transformations during this dynamic time period. The talk will conclude by introducing future directions for the investigations which will provide important details on how the inhabitants of Las Huacas were affected by Inca expansion.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Remarkable Books I (II and III)
DESCRIPTION:In March\, The New York Times Book Review featured 15 books by women that their critics see as “opening new realms to us\, whose books suggest and embody unexplored possibilities in form\, feeling and knowledge.” They say these books set the agenda for the 21st century. So the question for this class is: what does that agenda look like? \n\nBefore the first meeting I will send the NYT article to participants so they can read the short reviews of each book. At the first meeting we will select 4 of these to begin to answer our “research” question. We’ll read approximately 100 pages a week. We’ll have discussion\, small group analysis in class\, occasional lectures on style\, structure\, etc. \n\nLecturer Sharon Quiroz has a PhD. in English\, has published poetry and short stories\, and is currently working on her second novel while she tries to sell the first one. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Public Lecture: Billy Whiskers Bashes His Way into History
DESCRIPTION:JFK’s Favorite Childhood Series Defined America For Millions!\n\nBilly introduced ideas about America and freedom to children at a transitional period in the nation’s history. Frances Trego Montgomery’s series (1902-1930\, reissues in 1960s) was an enormously influential illustrated series contemporary with the Oz books\, as well as with America’s rise to world leadership\, and social unrest over race and immigration. Montgomery’s relentlessly destructive male goat\, the favorite childhood reading of Joe\, Jack\, and Bobby Kennedy\, raises questions about the nation’s defining role\, as well as the influence of childhood reading on children who become presidents.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Mythmaking\, Memory\, and A Sacred Landscape in Republican Rome”
DESCRIPTION:The “Rape of the Sabine Women” and the subsequent Sabine War were considered in ancient Rome one of the most important and formative events in Rome’s early history. While several sites in and around the Forum preserved the memory of specific events in the Sabine War\, Dr. Andrews argues that the memory of the Sabine women themselves was rooted in the Subura valley to the east of the Forum. \n\nThis talk presents the first chapter from Dr. Andrews' current monograph on the longue durée history of the Subura and its role as the primary locus for an institutional discourse on feminine virtue throughout its pre-modern history. She shows when\, how\, and why the story of the Sabine Women emerged and\, more importantly\, how it became anchored in the landscape of the Subura valley through a series of cult sites. She argues that the critical period was the Middle Republic\, when the area experienced extensive residential development and became a venue for aristocratic competition. The narrative of the Sabine women was promulgated by victors in the Italian wars of the third century BCE and grafted onto pre-existing sacred sites in the valley\, where many of these victors likely lived. This mythmaking in the Middle Republican period is but the first instance of the manipulation of local memory over the long history of the Subura.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Graduate Seminar Series - Boundary Layer Ingestion for Transport Aircraft: Power Balance\, Wind Tunnel Tests\, and Analysis Framework
DESCRIPTION:Alejandra Uranga\, Gabilan Assistant Professor\, USC\n\nBoundary layer ingestion (BLI)\, in which part of an aircraft airframe's boundary layer is ingested by the propulsors\, has the potential to provide significant improvements in fuel efficiency compared to conventional engine installations. The wind tunnel tests of the D8 \"double-bubble\" aircraft in back-to-back BLI and non-BLI configurations constitute a proof-of-concept for the use of BLI in transport aircraft. These were carried out as part of a NASA N+3 project led by MIT in collaboration with Aurora Flight Sciences and Pratt & Whitney.\n\nThis presentation will cover the wind tunnel experiments\, with emphasis on the quantification of the power-saving benefit of BLI. It will introduce the power balance method for analyzing highly-integrated aircraft configurations\, and how it was applied to the D8 tests to determine the aerodynamic benefit of BLI. The different sources of benefits with BLI will be related to the dissipation sources in the flowfield\, and an analysis framework for aircraft with BLI will be presented.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nAlejandra Uranga is a Gabilan Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at USC. Before joining USC in 2016\, she was a Research Engineer at MIT in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. While at MIT\, she was the project technology lead and co-PI for design\, development\, simulation\, and wind tunnel testing of the D8 double-bubble advanced transport aircraft concept under the NASA N+3 program.\n\nShe holds a PhD degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT\, and a Master's of Applied Sciences in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Victoria\, BC\, Canada. She completed her undergraduate education at the Université Paris 7 Denis Diderot\, Paris\, France\, with an associate's degree in Mathematics\, and has a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology. Her research interests are in aerodynamics\, novel aircraft design\, and integrated propulsion systems\, for which she favors a combined computational and experimental approach.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Welfare Implications of Political Patronage in Electricity\n\nPolitical involvement in electricity provision is a common occurrence\, with politicians favoring their voters. This benefits needy consumers\, while hurting provider revenues. I combine confidential data on the universe of billing records from a large state utility in India with data on elections and nighttime lights. I demonstrate new evidence on the extent of\, and the mechanisms behind\, political patronage in electricity provision. Using a close-election Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD)\, I find higher satellite-measured electricity consumption\, but systematically lower bill collections in constituencies aligned with the ruling party. I show evidence of under-reporting of consumption and also of data manipulation in billing records. Exploiting the rich variation and detail in the data\, I estimate net welfare to be unambiguously lower as a result of these actions. The producer losses of about $57 million are more than double the gains to consumers. To measure welfare changes\, I develop a novel method that estimates the price elasticity of electricity demand in the presence of data manipulation\, combining policy changes as instrumental variables with machine learning for model selection. My estimates are more robust than prior work which relies on aggregated data and on data that is likely to have been manipulated. Consistent with a model of patronage politics\, I find that politicians target voters with greater influence and those who benefit more from subsidies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar- Community assembly and structure in islands: a bottom up approach
DESCRIPTION:Oceanic islands and archipelagos provide simplified biological communities compared to continental settings\, making them useful systems for ecological and evolutionary investigation. Much of our general understanding of how such insular communities assemble over time comes from top-down extrapolations of process from species distribution data and molecular phylogenetic data. Here I will argue that to connect pattern with process\, geographically explicit individual-based bottom-up approaches are needed that are broadly representative of the community itself. We have been working toward this\, developing community-level sampling protocols for arthropod taxa that integrate DNA sequencing techniques to simultaneously facilitate taxonomic assignment and test hypotheses about the drivers of speciation. I will present results that reveal the subtle but pervasive impacts of island topography and climate that act in concert to drive speciation across entire arthropod communities. I will also present data from recent efforts within our research group to overcome the logistical constraints of geographic and taxonomic scale for comparative molecular analysis of invertebrate communities.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Public Lecture: On Langston Hughes’s Black Leninism
DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of a project\, \"Black Leninism: How Revolutionary Counter-Moods Are Made\,\" which turns to the black radical tradition in order to understand the formation of transformative political collectives. Here\, Flatley focuses on Langston Hughes\, and Hughes’s engagement with the political and poetic problem of representing a black collectivity—first of all to itself. Flatley suggests that Hughes’s poetry speaks not only to fundamental questions in African American letters concerning the political import of black writing\, but also to basic questions in the Marxist tradition about the role of representation and aesthetic experience in the creation of a revolutionary “class-for-itself.” And he makes a case for the continuing relevance of Hughes’s poetry to the present moment\, when the representation and affirmation of black lives
remains a vital political and poetic task.

SUMMARY:Other:Ultrafast tabletop XUV spectroscopy of transition metal complexes and organohalide perovskites
DESCRIPTION: X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES or NEXAFS) is a powerful technique for electronic structure determination. However\, widespread use of XANES is limited by the need for synchrotron light sources with tunable x-ray energy. Recent developments in extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light sources using the laser-based technique of high-harmonic generation have enabled core-level spectroscopy to be performed on femtosecond to attosecond timescales. We have extended the scope of tabletop XUV spectroscopy and demonstrated that M2\,3-edge XANES\, corresponding to 3p→3d transitions\, can reliably measure the electronic structure of first-row transition metal coordination complexes with femtosecond time resolution. We use this ability to track the excited-state relaxation pathways of photocatalysts and spin crossover complexes. In semiconductors such as CH3NH3PbI3\, distinct signals are observed for photoinduced electrons and holes\, allowing the dynamics of each carrier to be tracked independently. This work establishes high-harmonic spectroscopy as a useful tool for mainstream research in inorganic\, organometallic\, and materials chemistry. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nJosh Vura-Weis (University of Illinois)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law & Economics: Algorithmic Risk Assessment in the Hands of Humans
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\nAlgorithmic prediction tools have proliferated in modern society. They promise improved decision-making\, but contain the threat of entrenching race\, gender or class biases. Little is known about how their use affects real-world outcomes. We evaluate the impacts of incorporating algorithmic predictions of future offending (risk assessments) in high stakes decisions: criminal sentencing. Using multiple identification strategies – differences-in-differences\, discontinuities-in-time\, and discontinuities-in-risk-score – we seek to answer three questions: whether risk assessment affected judges’ decisionmaking (lowering sentences for low-risk defendants relative to higher-risk defendants)\, whether it affected net outcomes such as incarceration rates\, sentence lengths\, and recidivism\, and whether it affected racial disparities in incarceration. Our setting is Virginia\, a state which adopted risk assessment with specific policy goals: lowering carceral sentences for nonviolent offenders and increasing sentences for sex offenders. Overall we find that a) judges do change sentencing decisions in response to the risk assessment\, b) this change did not lead to any discernible increase in efficiency\, defined as lowering incarceration without affecting public safety or vice versa\, c) the specific policy goals were not met (net incarceration rates for nonviolent offenders remained the same\, and net incarceration rates for sex offenders decreased) and d) there is suggestive evidence that risk assessment can have an adverse effect on racial disparities in sentencing (among the subset of judicial circuits that responded most to the risk assessment\, incarceration rates for black defendants rose by 8 percentage points relative to white defendants).\n\nco-authored with Jennifer Doleac

SUMMARY:Presentation:Morag Myerscough: Belonging
DESCRIPTION:A proud Londoner\, Morag Myerscough has always lived in the city and has been fascinated by how color\, pattern\, and words can change urban environments and perceptions of spaces into places. From schools and hospitals to cultural hubs and town centers\, Myerscough explores the theme of “belonging” in her work\, using it to transform public spaces by creating welcoming\, engaging experiences for everyone. Myerscough’s Temple of Agape\, built for the 2014 Festival of Love on London’s South Bank\, used public space to create an open\, interactive symbol of devotion to love in all of its forms. Rooted in creating a sense of joy and belonging for all who encounter a space\, Myerscough creates specific local responses to each distinct audience that will see and experience her work\, using it to create community and build identity. Her visual vocabulary is inclusive by nature and its effortless energy resonates both visually and emotionally with audiences well beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. Myerscough’s contribution to educational environments was recognized in 2015\, when her work with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris on Burntwood School won the Stirling Prize for Architecture. She was made an RSA Royal Designer for Industry in 2017.\n\nSupported by Design Core Detroit Detroit Month of Design\, U-M Institute for the Humanities\, and Gifts of Art\, Michigan Medicine.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:High Stakes Culture
DESCRIPTION:We are in a moment in which a ‘culture war’—in large part about race—has been ignited and is being stoked daily by activists across the political spectrum and by the President of the United States himself. This high stakes culture war is playing out across digital media in ways that we need to better understand.\n\nPlease join us for a conversation about Childish Gambino’s “This is America” and the sprawling\, contentious conversation it sparked across the internet. What is he trying to say? How did the internet respond? How are our meaning making practices evolving? Why does culture matter so much now to so many\, and who gets to decide what it means?\n\nCome talk to humanities scholars Megan Ankerson (communication studies)\, Anita Gonzalez (theater)\, Robin Wilson (dance)\, Stephen Berrey (American culture & history)\, and moderator Angela Dillard (Afroamerican and African studies & Residential College) about these questions and others you might have about Childish Gambino’s America and yours.\n\nAbout the High Stakes Culture Series:\n\nFor the second year\, the High Stakes Culture series explores the “culture wars” that have recently been ignited across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum\, even the President of the United States himself\, are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs in a politically fraught moment. Black athletes are taking a knee. Anti-immigration voters are rallying for a wall. Long-standing Confederate monuments are coming down.\n\nWhat is at stake in the ways we understand culture and cultural conflict? High Stakes Culture is a series\, presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the Humanities Collaboratory\, that brings humanities perspectives to bear on current debates. Join us as we ask: How and why does culture matter so much now?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Open Lecture & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Carmen Bugan discusses how political repression and escaping persecution have influenced her writing and her views on language. Her lecture looks at several consequences of politics on the artistic process and argues for the necessity of addressing the larger\, timeless issues such as suffering\, hope\, and love\, rather than adopting a partisan politics in one’s literary work. In portraying the effects of turbulent politics on individual lives\, literature has a unique opportunity to ponder and celebrate our humanity. It can counteract the manipulative language of propaganda by drawing from the rich resources of a language that is able to sustain us through moments of political upheaval. Please use the \"To Register\" link below.\n\nBiography:\nBugan was born in 1970 in Romania and has since lived in the US\, Ireland\, England\, and France. She is the author of three collections of poems: Crossing the Carpathians (Oxford Poets/Carcanet)\, The House of Straw (Shearsman)\, and Releasing the Porcelain Birds (Shearsman)\; as well as the memoir Burying the Typewriter and the critical study Séamus Heaney and East European Poetry in Translation: Poetics of Exile. Bugan was educated at the University of Michigan and Oxford University\, UK\, where she obtained a doctorate in English literature. Her essays\, reviews\, and poems appear in publications such as PEN\, the TLS\, Modern Poetry in Translation\, PN Review\, Harvard Review\, and the BBC Magazine. In 2017 Carmen was made a George Orwell Prize Fellow. She teaches at the Gotham Writers Workshop in NYC and lives in Long Island\, NY.\n\nFrom the Pan MacMillan Blog: \n\"Being an immigrant writer in American today\" ~ \"At 2 a.m. on 10 March 1983\, Carmen Bugan's father left the family home\, alone. That afternoon\, Carmen returned from school to find secret police in her living room. Her father's protest against the regime had changed her life forever. This is her story.\"\n\n\"One of the most telling insights I've read about life under communism...warm and humane.\" ~Observer

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Freedom Riders
DESCRIPTION:\"Freedom Riders is the powerful harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. More than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws in order to test and challenge a segregated interstate travel system\, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way\, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.\"\n\nFollowing the film\, a panel will speak and lead discussion and Q&A\, including \n-Scott Ellsworth\, Lecturer in AfroAmerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan\n-Ronald Woods\, Lecturer in AfroAmerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan and Professor of Africology and African American Studies at Eastern Michigan University\n\nThis event is free and co-sponsored by U-M Michigan Community Scholars Program and the Ann Arbor District Library. SUMMARY:Performance:Archie Fisher & Garnet Rogers
DESCRIPTION:Tonight's concert brings original songwriters who work within deep traditions of place and song. Scottish folk master Archie Fisher is well known all over the British Isles as host of his own BBC radio show\, but his appearances stateside are to be cherished. Archie's most recent collection of songs \"Windward Away\,\" on which he worked for more than ten years. It's a gem—a haunting collection of introspective ballads\, evoking the wild and rough beauty of the Scottish Border country. One of a pair of brothers who spearheaded a tremendous renaissance in Canadian songwriting in the 1970s and 1980s\, Garnet Rogers tells detailed stories of people from all walks of life and their small\, everyday victories. He can shift from seriousness to razor-sharp wit in a heartbeat\, and no two of his shows are the same.
