On September 20, 2017, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force, shattering lives, communities, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis.

In June 2018, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery, abandonment and resilience, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past, present, and future.

These individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy, culture and history, political economy, environmental loss, civil infrastructure, public health, and human dignity. In this teach-out, we spotlight a number of successful organizations, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery.

Understanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of, and acting on, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery.

This Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame.

Please join us in listening to Puerto Rico.
Marcia Polenberg loves animals, each with its own unique personality, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness, surprise, mischief, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times, building up a rich, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics, paint, graphite and pastel.
The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research, and are beautiful in their detail, form and symmetry. For each one, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells, tissues and organs, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants, worms, fruit flies, fish, mice and yes, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma, bipolar disease, epilepsy and cancer.
This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists, Lorraine Kolasa, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler, Roger Smith, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.",

Blending images from the real world and her imagination, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature, such as tree branches, ice patterns, twisted vines, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.
Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s, that question was hotly debated as artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.

Lead support for "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L.
More than ever in the era of globalization, ideas traverse geographic, generational, and cultural boundaries, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa, Europe, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery, colonization, migration, racism, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings, photographs, sculpture, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai, Omar Victor Diop, Wangechi Mutu, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.

Lead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the University of Michigan Office of Research, African Studies Center, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.
Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination; re-writing the canonical accounts of history; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.

At a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists, designers, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future. It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art, design, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.

Artists: Rudolf Baranik, Stephanie Dinkins, Emory Douglas, Brendan Fernandes, Chitra Ganesh, Carole Harris, Maren Hassinger, Al Loving, Josh MacPhee, Native Art Department International, Michele Oka Doner, Yoko Ono, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Martha Rosler, Buster Simpson, Gregory Sholette, Leni Sinclair, Stephanie Syjuco, Graem Whyte, and Zafos Xagoraris.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra.
Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is known for imaginative drawings, sculptures, dioramas, and films rooted in the traditions of Surrealism, Dada and outsider art. His 2013 film Une danse des bouffons (or A jester's dance) tells the tale of a romance between two principal figures of these traditions: Dada icon Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins, who was the model for Duchamp's final, enigmatic artwork Étant donnés. Rife with art-historical references not only to the work of Duchamp but also to Francisco Goya, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys, among others, Une danse des bouffons navigates a sexually charged and mesmerizing world in which fantasy and torture run amok. The gallery presentation also includes a storyboard for the film featuring Dzama’s ink and watercolor drawings, renderings of small hybrid figures resembling children’s book illustrations. The drawings underscore the fantastical elements in a film that combines the carnivalesque with a nightmarish exploration of the surreal.

Lead support for Marcel Dzama: A Jester's Dance is provided by Candy and Michael Barasch. Additional generous support is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.
In October 1947, just two years after the end of World War II, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article, “Michigan Homecoming,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend, many of which were not published in the original article, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article, these photographs of fervent fans, strolling couples, alumni making their annual pilgrimage, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.

These photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.
See Through: Mirrors and Windows in Twentieth-Century Photography brings together a group of images that are doubly framed—once by the camera lens and again by the border of a mirror or window. By refracting and distorting, revealing and concealing, these reflective and transparent surfaces both draw attention to the photographer’s efforts to frame the world and expose the contingent nature of reality. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Eugène Atget, Robert Doisneau, Elliott Erwitt, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Joanne Leonard, Danny Lyon, and Joel Meyerowitz. By extending the limits of perception, these witty and provocative works invite us to see [through to] new visual possibilities.

Lead support for See Through: Windows and Mirrors in Twentieth-Century Photography is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L.
Human beings are political animals, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later, we are still political animals, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture.

This exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy, Olynthos in Greece, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today?

Lead Curator: Christopher Ratté
Co-Curators: Lisa Nevett, Nicola Terrenato, and Kathy Velikov

Visit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies
Join us for a discussion on the social movements (Anti-War Movement, Civil Rights Movements and Student Movements, including the Black Action Movement) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) that were born and nurtured in Ann Arbor and on the University of Michigan campus from the late-1950s to the 1970s. Panel participants include artists, educators and activists who played an active role in the happenings that defined these radical times in Ann Arbor’s history. This is a public program for the exhibition Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire on view at Stamps Gallery from Sept. 21 - Nov. 18, 2018.

Panelists: Julie Herrada (Curator, Labadie Collection), Buster Simpson (Artist & Stamps Alum ‘69 MFA), Leni Sinclair (Artist & Activist)

Moderated by Diane Kirkpatrick, Professor Emerita, History of Art, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Diane M. Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., Professor Emerita, History of Art, University of Michigan, received her B.A. degree from Vassar College in 1955, her M.F.A. degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1957, and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1965 and 1969, respectively. Kirkpatrick joined the faculty as a lecturer in the history of art in 1968 and was promoted to instructor in 1969, assistant professor in 1972, associate professor in 1974, and professor in 1982. A specialist in contemporary art, including photography, cinema, and technological media, Kirkpatrick has published widely, has two books in progress, and has presented numerous conference papers, all while undertaking educational television productions, guest curatorships, and a wide range of media projects. She was a pioneer in recognizing the potential of computer technologies for research, teaching, and exhibiting.

Buster Simpson has been active as an artist working in the public since the late 1960’s. His work ranges from stand alone sculpture to integrated and/or collaborative works. His work incorporates ecological, historical, social, and technological considerations, contextualizing them into a site specific aesthetic. His art, its medium and product vary, but the methodology and underpinning conceptual approach are consistent. All aspects of the public realm potentially could become part of the palette; the landscape, the infrastructure, the built environment, and the social and economic engagement. Simpson has stated, “I prefer working in public spaces. The complexity of any site is its asset; to build upon, to distill, to reveal its layers of meaning. Process becomes part and parcel to the art of the place.” Simpson has worked on major infrastructure projects, site master planning, signature sculptures, museum installations, and community projects. Simpson has completed numerous art master plans for urban centers and watersheds that integrate community, ecology and art.

Leni Sinclair was born in Koenigsberg, East Prussia, and raised on a Collective Farm in the former East Germany. She escaped from there before the Berlin Wall was built, and emigrated to America with the help of relatives and settled in Detroit. While studying geography at Wayne State University in the early 1960s, she helped organize the Detroit Artists Workshop and began documenting the cultural and political history of Detroit with her camera. She soon discovered the thriving Detroit jazz clubs and by mid-decade, she also found herself amidst an explosive “Michigan Rock” scene, working with emerging artists such as the MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, and Bob Seger while also serving as part of the lighting crew at the legendary Grande Ballroom. Leni possesses a genuinely iconic collection of photographs documenting the political and cultural transformations taking place in Detroit and Ann Arbor from 1965 to 1975. In 2009, Leni had her first major museum exhibit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, and since then had exhibitions in Lille, France; in Munich, Germany; and in Lagos, Nigeria, as well as at the Susanne Hilberry Gallery in Ferndale, Michigan in 2014. From Coltrane and Sun Ra to Howlin’ Wolf, Hendrix, and Aretha Franklin, Leni Sinclair’s images present not merely five decades of music photography, but an essential portrait of American culture.

Before assuming the role of Labadie Collection curator in 2000, Julie Herrada served for six years as assistant curator of the collection. Not only does she collect and manage holdings related to international social protest movements, she also curates exhibits, assists students and researchers from all over the world, and is constantly collaborating and thinking of ways to preserve and provide universal access to hidden histories. Herrada has authored several book reviews and has published articles in professional journals such as Archival Issues, Collection Building, Progressive Librarian, Serials Review and RBMS Journal (publication of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the American Library Association). In 2002 Herrada was one of the first people selected as a Mover and Shaker by Library Journal. The award is bestowed on those in the library profession who are “innovative, creative and making a difference.” In May of 2008 she was part of a small group who organized an international symposium called “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Archives and the Ethics of Memory Construction”, which explored the relationships between archives, professional ethics, power, social justice, and contemporary and historical accountability. In 2011 Herrada received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science.

Image credit: Leni Sinclair, “1520 Hill Street, Ann Arbor, 1970”

Please RSVP to reserve your place for this free event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/looking-backmoving-forward-activating-the-archive-and-documenting-a-movement-tickets-49847891385
When you visit the Kelsey Museum, do you find yourself wondering how the artifacts on display were excavated? What techniques were used in the 1920s versus today? What can an artifact really tell us about the life of someone who lived thousands of years ago and very far away? On this tour, we’ll answer these questions by looking closely at artifacts from the ancient Near East, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Plus, you don’t want to miss the drone and earth resistance meter on display in Urban Biographies — two pieces of cutting-edge technology used by University of Michigan archaeologists in the field.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.
One of the most phenomenal harmonica players in history, John Popper formed his band, Blues Traveler, with his high school friends Brendan Hill (drums), Chan Kinchla (guitar) and Bobby Sheehan (bass), in the late 80s, in New York City. They released their debut album in 1990 and hit the billboards with 1994's “Four." Following Blues Traveler's mainstream success, Popper was able to release a solo album, Zygote, in 1999 and toured with his own John Popper Band. Zygote was produced by Terry Manning with the background band consisting of longtime friends Dave Ares, Crugie Riccio, and Rob Clores of Cycomotogoat, and Carter Beauford, the drummer of Dave Matthews Band. The album's release came only less than three months after his heart surgery, and days after the death of Bobby Sheehan, Popper's best friend and band mate. Unfortunately, The subsequent tour was canceled midway due to poor ticket sales. Although his stage performances were becoming fewer, he made a major appearance on the big screen taking his first actual role in a movie, Just for the Time Being (2000), with supermodel Eva Herzigova. Soon after, Blues Traveler rejoined forces with two new members, and they have been touring and releasing albums ever since. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Blue Traveler as a band.

Popper has co-written songs with Trey Anastasio, Warren Haynes, Chris Barron, and Jonny Lang. He also frequently appears as a guest performer with musicians both famous and obscure, from a diverse variety of genres. He has performed with, among others, jam bands Spin Doctors, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, The Allman Brothers Band, bluesmen Eric Clapton and B.B. King; singer-songwriters Jason Mraz and John Mayer; saxophonist Karl Denson; San Francisco's Culann's Hounds; heavy metal band Metallica; rock trio ZO2 and even with the Hungarian Ambassador to the United States, András Simonyi and then-vice-presidential-candidate Tim Kaine.

In addition to Popper’s musical accomplishments, he has appeared in a cameo in several films: the Farrelly Brothers' Kingpin (1996) (which included a Blues Traveler performance at the end), Howard Stern's Private Parts (1997), Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), and The Meddler (2016).

Los Angeles songwriter Katrina Woolverton opens.",

Closing the concert, will be Jerry Bilik’s Variations on a College Song, which will have its first performance since it was premiered by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein in 1987. Bilik, who has written more than a thousand arrangements for the Michigan Marching Band, created a new version of Hail the Victors in the style of composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. It ends with a rousing rendition in the style of Bilik himself, who will be in attendance at the concert.

PROGRAM: Beethoven- Egmont Overture; Britten- Violin Concerto, Christine Harada Li, violin; Elgar- Enigma Variations; Jerry Bilik-Variations on a College Song (The Victors)",
