SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach-Out Series: Listening to Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2017\, Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico with catastrophic force\, shattering lives\, communities\, infrastructure and the physical environment. One year later\, Puerto Rico remains in the grips of an ongoing and systematic crisis. \n\nIn June 2018\, teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life. In this Teach-Out\, you will hear powerful narratives of loss and recovery\, abandonment and resilience\, failure and hope as you come to better understand Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nThese individual testimonials are complemented by resources that are meant to deepen your understanding of an urgent multidimensional crisis that involves policy\, culture and history\, political economy\, environmental loss\, civil infrastructure\, public health\, and human dignity. In this teach-out\, we spotlight a number of successful organizations\, strategies and solutions that are contributing to Puerto Rico’s recovery. \n\nUnderstanding begins with listening. But “listening” is not just about hearing people’s words: it also implies taking notice of\, and acting on\, what people say. Shaped by the individual experience of everyday life\, the Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-Out invites you to hear many voices from a distressed but resilient island and discover how you can contribute to the island’s recovery. \n\nThis Teach-Out is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame. \n\nPlease join us in listening to Puerto Rico.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Dissertation Defense - Design Optimization of a Boundary Layer Ingestion Propulsor Using a Coupled Aeropropulsive Model
DESCRIPTION:Justin S. Gray\nPhD Candidate\, Aerospace Engineering\n\nProfessor Joaquim R.R.A. Martin\nDissertation Chair\n\nWithin a few years of the first jet engine aircraft entering military service\, engineers proposed an aeropropulsive concept called boundary layer ingestion (BLI) that could offer reduced aircraft fuel burn.\n\nThe jet engine would ingest the boundary layer air and thereby reduce aircraft drag and improve propulsion system efficiency at the same time. Although a promising idea\, lack of computational power and aerodynamic analysis tools for viscous flows prevented its adoption.\n\nThanks to the modern computing power and developments in the field of multidisciplinary design optimization\, RANS CFD is now a viable tool for early-stage aircraft design. This has opened the door to the design of BLI propulsion systems.\n\nThis thesis presents a detailed aeropropulsive study of the aft-mounted BLI propulsor for NASA's turboelectric STARC-ABL aircraft. The multidisciplinary modeling was performed using a coupled model built with RANS CFD and newly developed 1-D thermodynamic propulsion analysis.\n\nThe results of the study show that STARC-ABL could use between 1\% and 4.6\% less energy at cruise compared to a non BLI aircraft. Further results show aerodynamic shape optimization of the aft-fuselage and BLI propulsor nacelle can be used to limit inlet distortion with an associated reduction in BLI performance.\n\nDissertation Committee:\nChair: Professor Joaquim R. SUMMARY:Other:Developmental Brown Bag
DESCRIPTION:Leigh Gayle Goetschius\n\nTitle: Amygdala-prefrontal cortex white matter tracts are widespread\, variable and implicated in amygdala modulation in adolescents. \n\nAbstract: The amygdala and prefrontal cortex (PFC) are fundamentally involved in emotion. The PFC is hypothesized to influence amygdala reactivity\; however\, extant research lacks anatomical specificity. Here\, we used probabilistic tractography and functional MRI (fMRI) with 142 adolescents. Results revealed widespread\, but variable\, white matter connectivity between the amygdala and multiple PFC regions. Specifically\, whereas the amygdala was structurally connected to all PFC regions examined\, connectivity was greater in subgenual cingulate\, orbitofrontal\, and dorsomedial regions relative to dorsal cingulate and dorsolateral regions. Machine-learning demonstrated that greater amygdala-PFC connectivity was associated with less amygdala reactivity and that this association was driven by orbitofrontal and dorsomedial regions. By integrating probabilistic tractography with fMRI\, this study helps elucidate the nature of this emotion-based circuit.\n\nDominic Kelly\n\nTitle: Capturing fluctuations in gendered cognition with novel intensive longitudinal measures\n\nAbstract: Cognitive abilities are often assumed to be stable and are typically measured cross-sectionally\, but compelling evidence shows that they vary with experience\, biology\, and psychological context. Most evidence\, however\, concerns executive function with limited investigation of gendered cognition\, such as spatial and verbal abilities. This may be a function of measurement\, as there are no validated instruments for intensive longitudinal assessment of abilities thought to show sex differences. The goal of this study is to fill that research gap by introducing and validating new 75-occasion measures of two such abilities: three dimensional mental rotations and delayed paired verbal recall. This goal was accomplished by conducting both between-person analyses (e.g.\, daily mean scores and correlations of daily performance with standard\, criterion measures) and within-person analyses (i.e.\, linear growth curve models with random intercepts and slopes controlling for general intelligence) of 75-day diary data. Results suggest that both measures are valid\, capture significant individual differences in levels and variability across days\, and show sex differences\, but sex differences were larger for mental rotations than verbal recall\, and provided evidence of slight improvement across study days. Conclusions are consistent with the notion that gendered cognitive abilities are both stable and show daily fluctuation\, encouraging future work with the newly-developed\, freely-available measures.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Coffee and Literature
DESCRIPTION:---\nThe 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme\, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media\, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy\, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish. \n---\n\nLecture Abstract:\nHow did a literary scholar come to write a book\, \"A Rich Brew: How Cafés Created Modern Jewish Culture\,\" about coffeehouses and their role in multilingual modern Jewish literature and culture? Professor Pinsker will explain how the project grew out of the research he did for his previous book. The discussion will focus on how issues of audience\, mode (and language) of publication\, access to archives and materials influence how we think of projects and books\, and how they develop organically. Professor Pinsker will also explain the collaborative nature of the work on the book\, and how a Digital Humanities project complements the book\, combining mapping with images\, texts\, networks analysis\, and storytelling. \n\nSpeaker Bio:\nAs a specialist in modern Hebrew and Jewish literature and culture\, Professor Pinsker is interested in Hebrew literature written in Palestine/Israel\, Europe and America\, as well as Jewish literature in Yiddish\, English\, German and other languages. He has a joint appointment at the Department of Middle East Studies and the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. He is the author and editor of five books\, and currently writing a new book on Yiddish in Israeli LIterature. \n\n---\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Finding Truth When Most People Are Wrong
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\nThe question whether to trust the judgments of a few experts or the wisdom-of-the-crowd is not just of scientific but also of political and philosophical interest. Crowd wisdom is usually defined as consensus — the majority vote or the median estimate or forecast. This principle seems fair and simple\, but it has a blind spot for information that is new or unfamiliar. The cost of wrong collective decisions can be high in terms of environmental risks underestimated\, or promising ideas ignored. The challenge is to combine the virtues of a ‘democratic’ procedure\, which allows anyone\, irrespective of credentials\, to register an opinion\, with an 'elitist’ outcome that associates truth with the judgments of a select few. I will describe a simple alternative to democratic averaging by a panel or online crowd. The alternative principle is to select judgments that receive more support than predicted by those same people. I will review some recent evidence bearing on this approach\, and discuss extensions to forecasting.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Lecture. LGBTQ Rights in Poland and EU: Legal and Social Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Europe\, as well as the rest of the world\, is witnessing rapid changes regarding perception and recognition of the rights of LGBTQ persons. Decriminalization of same-sex relations\, prohibition of unequal treatment in the workplace\, recognition of family rights\, and equal access to goods and services are among the issues that heat up public and legal debates in the European Union member states. \n \nPoland is not an exception and debates about LGBTQ rights are also in the center of the public discourse. However\, the specificity of the Polish situation is a result of a dramatic clash of diverse arguments and values\, and also of a religious and political nature. Poland is torn between progressive and pro-Western orientation and traditional catholic influence which strengthens homophobic and trans-phobic atmosphere\, incitement to hatred and violence. Poland is a country where an openly gay man is one of the most popular politicians at the national level on one hand and on the other\, the governing majority is almost openly questioning fundamental human rights of LGBTQ persons. \n \nThe lecture will analyze these different components of political\, social\, and legal debates around LGBTQ rights in EU and Poland\, including latest mile-stone court judgments in this field. \n \nKrzysztof Śmiszek is a Polish human rights lawyer and activist. He is a graduate of the University of Warsaw\, Faculty of Law and Administration (2003) as well as European Law Postgraduate Studies (2006). He received his PhD on Human Rights Law and the European Union from University of Warsaw\, Faculty of Law and Administration (2016). Currently\, he is a lecturer at the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. \n \nKrzysztof’s main areas of interest are human rights of minorities and women with a special focus on LGBTI rights. He is also interested in international comparative perspective of anti-discrimination legislation as well as institutional protection against discrimination. \n \nHe has published in Polish and English. Currently\, he is a managing editor of The Anti-Discrimination Law Review. \n\nThis event is co-sponsored by: Center for the Education of Women+ (CEW+)\, Women's Studies Department\, Copernicus Program in Polish Studies\, and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Anomaly of Dancing Reactor Antineutrinos
DESCRIPTION:The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation(RENO) started data-taking from August\, 2011 and has observed the disappearance of reactor electron antineutrinos to measure the smallest neutrino mixing angle theta13. The experiment has analyzed roughly 2200 days of data to make an accurate measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency based on energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor antineutrinos. RENO’s precisely measured flux and spectral shape of reactor antineutrinos has shown a deficit in the flux and an excess in the region of 5 MeV relative to the most commonly used model. Furthermore\, it has observed fuel-composition dependent variation of reactor antineutrino yield and spectrum. We find that reevaluation of 235U’s antineutrino yield per fission may solve the reactor antineutrino anomaly. We also report a hint of correlation between the 5-MeV excess and the 235U fuel isotope fraction.\n

DESCRIPTION: Research in the Hermann lab is focused on exploring the structure\, molecular recognition and assembly of ribonucleic acid (RNA) architectures.\nOne key goal is the development of therapies targeting noncoding RNA (ncRNA). ncRNAs participate as key players in many biological processes and may adopt complex folds that are required for function. The development of ligands that bind selectively to ncRNA targets opens new ways to expand the existing repertoire of protein-directed therapeutics. I will present our research on the discovery of an unprecedented molecular switch target in the genome of RNA viruses including the human pathogen hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the development of ligands that inhibit the viral switch.\nIn the second part of the presentation\, I will outline how we use RNA crystal structures to design nano-architectures that self-assemble from small RNA motifs and may serve as combinatorial platforms for applications in molecular recognition\, sensor and catalyst development as well as protein interaction studies. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThomas Hermann (University of California\, San Diego)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 813 Seminar: Maria Mayorga
DESCRIPTION:Using Systems Engineering to Inform Public Health Policies: A Simulation Model to Assess the Impact of Insurance Expansion on Colorectal Cancer Screening\n\nRecent health care reform debates have triggered substantial discussion on how best to improve access to insurance. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an example of a largely preventable condition\, if access to and use of healthcare is increased. Early and ongoing screening and intervention can identify and remove polyps before they become cancerous. We present the development of an individual-based discrete-event simulation model to estimate the impact of insurance expansion scenarios on CRC screening\, incidence\, mortality\, and costs. A national repeated cross-sectional survey was used to estimate which individuals obtained insurance in North Carolina (NC) after the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The potential impact of expanding the state’s Medicaid program is tested and compared to no insurance reform and the ACA without Medicaid expansion. The model integrates a census-based synthetic population\, national data\, claims based statistical models\, and a natural history module in which simulated polyps and cancer progress.\n\nA brief overview of other precision medicine related research projects in Health Systems Engineering at NC State are also presented.\n\nMARIA E. MAYORGA is a Professor of Personalized Medicine in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University. She received her M.S. and PhD degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California\, Berkeley. Her research interests include predictive models in health care\, health care operations management\, emergency response\, and humanitarian logistics. She has authored over 65 publications in archival journals and refereed proceedings. Her research has been supported by NIH and NSF\, among others. She received the distinguished National Science Foundation CAREER Award for her work to incorporate patient choice into predictive models of health outcomes. She is a member of INFORMS and the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers\, and serves on the editorial board for the journals Health Systems\, IISE Transactions\, IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering\, OMEGA and Service Science.\n\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach.\n\nFor additional information and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, \nplease contact genehkim@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Presentation:UM Psychology Community Talk
DESCRIPTION:Do the roots of psychopathy lie in early childhood?\n\nAbstract:\nThe cold and calculating psychopath captures our imagination through many movies and books. But what do we know about psychopathy and the development of psychopathy? In this talk\, I will briefly describe what we know about psychopathy in adults. I will then describe a line of research examining an early risk factor for psychopathy called callous-unemotional traits that is studied in children and teens. I will describe recent work identifying how these traits develop via “nature” and “nurture” and present work starting as early as preschool which identifies potentially malleable and preventable risk factors for this dangerous outcome.\n\n Biosketch:\nLuke W. Hyde\, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Clinical and Developmental areas of the Department of Psychology. He received BA from Williams College and PhD in Clinical and Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in cognitive neuroscience. He research focuses on the development of antisocial behavior (e.g.\, aggression\, rule breaking) in youth and the impacts of adversity on youth and families. Much of this research has focused on how experiences like parenting and living in a dangerous neighborhood impact children’s brain and behavior leading to psychopathology. Dr. Hyde’s research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health\, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development\, the Brain and Behavior Foundation\, and the Avielle Foundation. This research has been recognized by early career awards from the Society for Research in Psychopathology\, the Association for Psychological Science\, and Division 7 (Developmental Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

SUMMARY:Performance:Johnny Irion
DESCRIPTION:Now and then in American culture\, the written word fuses the worlds of music and literature. Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize is only the most obvious example. An individual singer-songwriter can sometimes embody that fusion in his life and work. An example Johnny Irion (EYE-ree-on)\, great-nephew of John Steinbeck and grandson-in-law of Woody Guthrie. Johnny's new solo album\, \"Driving Friend\,\" includes members of Dawes\, Wilco and the Mother Hips and ranges across a wide expanse of roots genres\, from blues and gospel to folk and country. Whether Johnny Irion is singing about Santa Barbara\, Pittsfield or the Rapture\, his sharp wit\, telling description\, and sharp character studies take us to a musical hometown of his own.
