SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.\n\nJoin the conversation: #policytalks\n\nThis event will be live webstreamed. Check back just before the event for viewing information at this link: https://fordschool.umich.edu/events/2018/barry-rabe-pricing-carbon-booktalk\n\nAbout the book:\nA political science analysis of the feasibility and sustainability of carbon pricing\, drawing from North American\, European\, and Asian case studies.\n\nClimate change\, economists generally agree\, is best addressed by putting a price on the carbon content of fossil fuels—by taxing carbon\, by cap-and-trade systems\, or other methods. But what about the politics of carbon pricing? Do political realities render carbon pricing impracticable? In this book\, Barry Rabe offers the first major political science analysis of the feasibility and sustainability of carbon pricing\, drawing upon a series of real-world attempts to price carbon over the last two decades in North America\, Europe\, and Asia.\n\nRabe asks whether these policies have proven politically viable and\, if adopted\, whether they survive political shifts and managerial challenges over time. The entire policy life cycle is examined\, from adoption through advanced implementation\, on a range of pricing policies including not only carbon taxes and cap-and-trade but also such alternative methods as taxing fossil fuel extraction. These case studies\, Rabe argues\, show that despite the considerable political difficulties\, carbon pricing can be both feasible and durable.\n\nAbout the author:\nBarry Rabe is the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Professor of Public Policy and the director of the Center for Local\, State\, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) at the Ford School. He is also the Arthur Thurnau Professor of Environmental Policy and holds courtesy appointments in the Program in the Environment\, the Department of Political Science\, and the School for Environment and Sustainability. Barry was recently a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and continues to serve as a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. His research examines climate and energy politics and his newest book\, Can We Price Carbon? (MIT Press) was released in spring 2018. He has received four awards for his research from the American Political Science Association\, including the 2017 Martha Derthick Award for long-standing impact in the fields of federalism and intergovernmental relations. Barry co-chaired the Assumable Waters Committee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 2015-2017 and has served on recent National Academy of Public Administration panels examining the Departments of Commerce and Interior as well as the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. \n\nFor more information contact closup@umich.edu or call 734-647-4091.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): The Illusion of Multitasking and Its Positive Effect on Performance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nWith technological advancements\, the desire\, ability\, and often necessity to multitask are pervasive. Although multitasking refers to the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks\, most activities that require active attention cannot actually be done simultaneously. Therefore\, whether a certain activity is considered multitasking is often a matter of perception.\n\nThe current paper demonstrates the malleability of what people perceive as multitasking\, showing that the same activity may or may not be construed as multitasking. Importantly\, although engaging in multiple tasks may diminish performance\, we find that\, holding the activity constant\, the mere perception of multitasking in fact improves performance.\n\nAcross 32 studies (30 of which with performance-based incentives)\, totaling 8\,242 participants\, we find that those who perceived an activity as multitasking were more engaged\, and consequently outperformed those who perceived that same activity as single-tasking.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Language Issues: Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme\, “The Process of Discovery: How Scholars Write Books Today” will discuss how in popular media\, writing is fantastically presented as a process whereby inspiration—a muse— comes to the writer (or fails to). In this fantasy\, writers type fiendishly or crumple up one sheet after another. The reality is at once more complicated and humble than this. Come discover how scholars discover. The colloquium series will feature presentations from CMENAS faculty on their recent book projects and will explore the research process from start to finish. \n------\n \nLecture Abstract: \nPeople sure love to talk and write\, ancients and moderns alike. But how can we know what people four thousand years ago were trying to do when they used language? We will look at various language questions raised by ancient Middle Eastern sources and discuss how modern linguistic\, anthropological\, and historical methodologies can bridge thousand-year gaps\, so that we can communicate with women and men from long ago. And\, just as importantly\, how do we explain these methodologies to non-expert readers—how do you write a book about one topic\, while simultaneously taking your readers into other fields that require different modes of thinking and evaluation? How do you address one audience while speaking the language of a different one? \n\nSpeaker Bio: \nJay Crisostomo is an Assyriologist\, researching language and social and intellectual histories of the ancient Middle East. His book Translation as Scholarship: Language\, Writing\, and Bilingual Education in Ancient Babylonia will be published in early 2019. He is currently working on the linguistic and social history of the Sumerian language\, one of the world’s earliest and most important recorded languages. \n\n---\nThe following text will be included on all II events unless you indicate otherwise:If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. DESCRIPTION: We recently explored the possibility of using gold(I) catalysts to activate allenes towards alcohol nucleophiles to effect allenoate Claisen rearrangements. However\, instead of allene activation\, a pendant ester was transesterified and etherified\, which led to our development of a gold-catalyzed\, microwave protocol to activate alcohols to form ethers and amines via an intermolecular\, SN1-type reaction. Ultimately\, in lieu of a metal-catalyzed version\, we have developed a Bronsted acid-catalyzed allenoate Claisen that affords the corresponding products in high yields and enantioselectivities. Lessons learned from these studies have led to the serendipitous discovery of a silver-catalyzed\, N-formylation reaction and have informed our development of an anti-Markovnikov hydroamination reaction. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nScott Denmark(University of Illinois) \, Noah Burns(Stanford University) \, Anna Wenzel(Claremont McKenna College)

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Travel and Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:“…all tourists are dear to Hermes\, the god of travel\, who is patron also of amiable curiosity and freedom of mind.” George Santayana\, The Philosophy of Travel. There is an intimate relationship between philosophy and travel: both challenge our everyday assumptions and both raise important ethical questions. \n\nThis course will explore those connections. Some of the questions we will discuss include: Is there a moral value to travel? What are the moral virtues or even obligations of the “good traveler”? Should we “do as the Romans do” even if they act immorally (e.g.\, disrespect women)? Do we have a moral obligation to represent our country when we travel abroad? Can we truly understand another culture and should we try? When does travel become voyeurism? Does our quest for “authentic” travel destroy the very authenticity of the places we visit? If we are concerned about impoverished areas\, should we use our money to help them rather than visit them? \n\nInstructor Elias Baumgarten just retired from teaching philosophy for 46 years at UM-Dearborn and has traveled to over 70 countries. This study group for those 50 and over will meet on Mondays\, 1-3\, from October 1 through October 29.

Towner Professor of Engineering\, U-M\n- Allison Steiner\, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences\, Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering\, and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences\, U-M\n\nREPORT OVERVIEW & PANEL MODERATION:\n- Lilia Cortina\,* Associate Director of ADVANCE for the College of LSA\; Professor of Psychology\, Women’s Studies\, and Management and Organizations\, U-M\n- Anna Kirkland\,* Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender\; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Women’s Studies\, U-M\n\nPreventing and effectively addressing sexual harassment of women in colleges and universities has remained a challenge for decades. More than half of women faculty and staff report having been harassed. Student surveys of university systems show disturbingly similar rates\, with 20–50% of women students experiencing sexually harassing behavior perpetrated by faculty or staff.\n\nPersistent sexual harassment in STEM fields\, and its adverse impacts on women’s careers\, jeopardizes progress in closing the gender gap\, damages research integrity\, and results in a costly loss of talent. Academic sciences\, engineering\, and medicine share characteristics that create conditions for harassment\, but many findings of the report are not limited to STEM field settings. Other fields within academia can be similarly male-dominated\, hierarchical work and learning settings in which abusive cultures may form. Such environments can silence and limit the career opportunities for both the targets of the sexual harassment and bystanders\, causing both men and women to leave their fields.\n\nThis panel discussion will offer broad discussion of use to any member of the university community or the public interested in sexual harassment in academia\n\nSexual Harassment in the Academy Panel Discussion Series is presented by IRWG and the Office of Research\, with co-sponsorship from: ADVANCE\, The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion\, the College of Literature Sciences\, and the Arts\, and the College of Engineering\n\nQuestions or for accessibility information\, please contact irwg@umich.edu or (734) 764-9537.\n\n*National Academies committee member and report co-author

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Film Screening and Discussion of Soufra
DESCRIPTION:Soufra follows the unlikely and wildly inspirational story of intrepid social entrepreneur\, Mariam Shaar – a generational refugee who has spent her entire life in the Burj El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut\, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company\, “Soufra\,” and then expand it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee woman who now share this camp as their home. Together\, they heal the wounds of war through the unifying power of food while taking their future into their own hands through an unrelenting belief in Mariam\, and in each other. In the process\, Mariam is breaking barriers\, pulling together Syrian\, Iraqi\, Palestinian and Lebanese women to work side by side and form beautiful friendships while running this thriving business. \n \nSoufra will shine a new and revealing light on people inside of the largest refugee crisis in human history\, but ultimately this film is about hope\, grit\, passion and the common bonds created by bringing people together around food as a bridge to overcome all barriers. Though Mariam is officially considered “stateless” she is a beacon of hope and home for thousands upon thousands of women in the most unlikely of places. Mariam and her team will be just that for thousands more once her story is told through Soufra. \n \nThe screening of the film will be followed by a discussion and Q&A featuring Soufra director and producer\, Thomas Morgan and Quinn Konarska\, U-M International Studies alumna and production coordinator\, Rebelhouse Group\, who helped produce the film. \n \nA reception with light appetizers and refreshments will follow the film discussion. The cookbook\, Soufra: Recipes from a Refugee Food Truck\, will also be available for purchase for $20.00 via cash or check.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by: Program in International and Comparative Studies\, Center for Entrepreneurship\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, Donia Human Rights Center\, Global Islamic Studies Center\, Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, Department of Middle East Studies\, and Center for Middle East and North African Studies\n \nThomas Morgan \nDirector and Producer\, Soufra \nThomas attended college at Central Michigan University where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in 1990. Morgan worked as real estate developer and investment banker for most of his career. In 2009\, after a “series of unlikely events” Morgan left the corporate world behind to become a documentary filmmaker and activist. \n \nHis films have been labeled “Filmanthropy” as he has leveraged them to create movements and a call to action. In Storied Streets\, Morgan captures the painful reality of homelessness in America and gracefully unearths pain and personal triumphs of those living unhoused in our country. Through the film he has protested\, petitioned and pushed for laws making the violence against the homeless a hate crime\, higher wages and abolishment of laws criminalizing homelessness. \n \nWith the 2013 documentary short film\, Waiting for Mamu\, he speaks to the power of one\, through the story of Pushpa Basnet\, who at age 21 began helping free children from the prison floors in Nepal. The award winning film has raised the money to build a permanent home\, The Butterfly Home\, in Kathmandu and assisted in supporting their education. He has added Executive Producer to his resume through his support of Silenced\, a film about US government whistleblowers\, and India’s Daughter\, an Oscar contending film about the rape and murder of a 23 year old medical student in India. \n \nMorgan has been a keynote speaker many times on Capitol Hill and twice before the U.S. Congress. He also spoke for the PPL forum at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and at 2013 at the United Nations. His TED Talk entitled “Put On Your Underoos It’s Time To Save The World” has been seen via internet by hundreds of thousands. He has done one of the most unusual TEDx Talks from Nepal soon after the earthquake while providing relief to Pushpa Basnet and her children and was the commencement speaker at his alma mater given what has been called “One the best commencement speeches of 2015.” \n \nQuinn Konarska\, Rebelhouse Studios\, Los Angeles\, CA \nBA International Studies - Global Environment and Heath\; minors\, Global Media Studies\, and French and Francophone Studies '13 \n \nQuinn graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a BA in International Studies focused on Global Environment and Health\, and minors in Screen Arts and Cultures\, and French and Francophone studies. While at Michigan\, she was an active member of FOKUS (Fighting Obstacles Knowing Ultimate Success) and SHEI Magazine\, and studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence\, France. In 2011\, she worked for Participant Media as a documentary development intern\, helping to fund and produce films for social change. Upon graduation\, she accepted an offer with Google in San Francisco. She worked in People Operations\, developing events and programs to engage with top tech talent while working to build a more diverse hiring pipeline. In August 2017\, Quinn left Google\, packed up her Volvo wagon\, and headed south to pursue impact media in Los Angeles. \n \nQuinn currently works as a production and outreach coordinator for Rebelhouse Group\, a creative agency that produces films in tandem with outreach campaigns to enact social change. Their most recent documentary\, Soufra\, tells the story of a group of refugee women in Lebanon who set out to launch a successful catering company and expand it into a food truck business. Soufra was an official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival\, Cannes Positive Cinema Week\, DOC NYC\, El Gouna\, and numerous other film festivals. Quinn plans to continue pursuing writing and filmmaking as tools to make the world a better place.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Please contact: is-michigan@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 813 Seminar: Richard Hughes
DESCRIPTION:There is wide variation in the quality of total hip and knee arthroplasty (“replacement”) implants. A major quality indicator of an implant is the percentage of patients needing a revision surgery to replace implant components. National registries in Australia\, Sweden\, Norway\, New Zealand report revision risk for individual implant models. Surgeons have used these data to choose better implants\, resulting in improved quality. National registries also forced DePuy to recall its ASR hip resurfacing device by publicly reporting the poor outcomes for that implant. The only registry in the United States publicly reporting implant performance is the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI). MARCQI is a state-wide collaborative of hospitals and surgeons dedicated to improving the quality of care for hip and knee replacement patients. It collects and analyzes data from over 95% of all elective total hip and knee replacement patients performed in the state of Michigan. It uses these data to compute revision risk data for implants and publicly reports the results in an annual report. This talk will explain MARCQI and its first annual report that was released in 2017. The report is a “consumer reports” of hip and knee replacement implants. Possibilities for using Bayesian network and linear programming models to improve causal inference will be presented.\n\nRichard Hughes received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan in 1991. In 1998 he returned to the University of Michigan as faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In the interim\, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His work today focuses on quality improvement in hip and knee arthroplasty. Along with Dr. Brian Hallstrom\, M.D.\, Dr. Hughes is Co-Director of the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI). MARCQI is a network of 67 hospitals across Michigan that work together to improve quality of care for hip and knee arthroplasty patients by sharing best practices. He also developed and teaches IOE 413 Optimization Modeling in Health Care. \n\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach.\nFor additional information and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, \nplease contact genehkim@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Data Innovation for Global Problem Solving: Promise and Peril”
DESCRIPTION:How data shaped the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals\, how it is transforming local and global problem-solving\, and the risks posed by a policy makers and a public increasingly skeptical of data will be the topic of a Oct. 1 talk co-sponsored by WDI and the Center for Value Chain Innovation.\n\nDaniella Ballou-Aares\, partner at the global advisory firm Dalberg\, will give the talk\, “Data Innovation for Global Problem Solving: Promise and Peril” beginning at 5 p.m. in Room R2230 at the Ross School of Business. It is open and free to the public.\n\nBallou-Aares will discuss if data innovations can transform how the world responds to the biggest social\, economic and environmental challenges\, and if data is able to bring nations\, companies\, and citizens together for a common cause. Conversely\, she will examine whether the ability of data to influence decision-makers is on the decline\, and if the impact of data innovations will be unable to address the world’s most significant development challenges.

SUMMARY:Performance:Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket with Steelism
DESCRIPTION:Carl Broemel has appeared on Rolling Stone's list of 20 New Guitar Gods\, but that doesn't cover his divine presence. A linchpin of the phenomenally successful Louisville neo-psychedelic rock band My Morning Jacket\, he has released three solo albums\, including the new \"Wished Out.\" Solo\, he plays acoustic instruments and takes an introspective approach. \"It takes a lot of time to know your mind\,\" Carl says and that Zen-like statement informs his intimate musings on life\, reflecting on things as they are and making no judgment on how they should be. The music of Carl Broemel gives pause for thought but stops well short of preaching. It inhabits little fractured moments that invite the listener into thoughtful contemplation that in turn gives rise to epiphanies on larger themes.
