SUMMARY:Other:Quantum Coherence in Chemistry: Tackling the Decoherence Challenge
DESCRIPTION: A subject of considerable current interest in Chemistry is the possibility of using non-trivial quantum mechanical effects\, such as coherence and interference\, to enhance molecular function. This possibility is hindered by decoherence processes that prevent matter from fully exhibiting its quantum features. In this talk\, I will summarize our progress understanding decoherence in molecular processes\, and in particular electronic decoherence. I will discuss the basic mechanisms for electronic coherence loss\, methods to quantify the decoherence\, and a general theory of decoherence timescales. The talk with conclude with some novel prospects on the possibility of using lasers to control electronic decoherence in molecules. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nIgnacio Franco (University of Rochester)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Hineinu – Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:A same-sex Jewish marriage contract (Ketubah). A sign for gender inclusive bathrooms in a Jewish Community Center. A Christmas tree adorned with rainbow-colored ornaments and a Star of David topper. These are three of the 21 photos-with-narratives that constitute “Hineinu – Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit.” Combined with rich\, thought-provoking text\, these photos give insight into the varied experiences of local community members who are both Jewish and queer.\n\n“Photovoice” is the process of putting cameras in the hands of traditionally “voiceless” or marginalized community members to allow them to record\, reflect on\, and share their community’s strengths and concerns. Photovoice participants have the opportunity to capture their current experiences through pictures\, with the goal of sparking dialogue and action related to the themes depicted in the photos.\n\nAs you view this Photovoice exhibit\, we hope that you will consider what it means to be inclusive and welcoming\, and that you will continue to develop an awareness of the diversity of other people’s experiences both within and outside of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. Earlier this year\, Ghost Pony Press released Cope’s eighth poetry collection: The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems.\n\nOn view during Special Collections Research Center hours: Monday-Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Engineering Therapies for Complex Diseases\"
DESCRIPTION:Many diseases lack a clear cause\, making the search for therapies especially challenging. For example\, there is no known cause for more than 80% of the cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)\, and the remaining cases can be caused by mutations in any one of more than twenty genes. It is unlikely that any single therapeutic strategy will work for all these patients. We seek to understand such complex diseases better by gathering a wide variety of omic\, clinical and behavior data. I’ll describe the approaches we are using to integrate these data\, identify disease subtypes and explore their therapeutic potential.\n\nDr. Ernest Fraenkel is a professor in Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire
DESCRIPTION:Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement\, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse\, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination\; re-writing the canonical accounts of history\; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.\n\nAt a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees\, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists\, designers\, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art\, design\, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.\n\nArtists: Rudolf Baranik\, Stephanie Dinkins\, Emory Douglas\, Brendan Fernandes\, Chitra Ganesh\, Carole Harris\, Maren Hassinger\, Al Loving\, Josh MacPhee\, Native Art Department International\, Michele Oka Doner\, Yoko Ono\, Kameelah Janan Rasheed\, Martha Rosler\, Buster Simpson\, Gregory Sholette\, Leni Sinclair\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Graem Whyte\, and Zafos Xagoraris. \n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | Tradition and Innovation in English-language Noh\, \"Blue Moon Over Memphis\"
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Toyota Visiting Professor 30th Anniversary Special Lecture Series\n\nNOTE: Please join us for \"Blue Moon Over Memphis\" at the Power Center on Friday\, October 12\, 2018 at 7pm.\n\nIn preparation for the English-language Noh performance at the University of Michigan of \"Blue Moon Over Memphis\" (BMOM)\, a story based on the legendary Elvis Presley\, this talk examines how Noh can be created and performed in languages other than Japanese\, what aspects BMOM has maintained or adapted from tradition\, and how this version deviates from tradition. This talk posits that English-language Noh has become an entry point into Noh for audiences\, and that its composers have created English-language Noh text-music conventions. BMOM reveals the flexibility of the Noh form and how it can accommodate innovative musical elements in English. \n \nMariko Anno is Associate Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Tokyo University of the Arts and a D.M.A. in Flute Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research examines Japanese Noh drama in a contemporary transnational context through English-language Noh. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to bkinzer@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ChE Seminar Series: K. Dane Wittrup
DESCRIPTION:C.P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biological Engineering\nAssociate Director\, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\n\nABSTRACT\n\n\"Bioengineering of synergistic innate and adaptive immunotherapy of cancer\"\n\nHarnessing the immune system to attack cancer has started a revolution in oncology. The ability of the adaptive immune system to track such evolving pathologies has provided robust responses and cures in 10-25% of previously intractable cancers such as metastatic melanoma. The next frontier is to “raise the tail” of the survival curve in such cancers by finding synergistic combination therapies. Chemical and biological engineers have pioneered approaches that are well suited to such investigations\, bringing quantitative problem-solving synthetic and analytical toolkits to bear. I’ll provide examples from my lab where cocktails of anti-tumor antibodies and cytokines have accomplished highly safe and efficacious therapies as tested in mouse models of cancer.

SUMMARY:Presentation:EHAP Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Sculpting the Epigenome Across Generations\n\n\nThe transmission of characteristics to individuals that promote development\, reproduction and survival is a critical feature of evolution and has traditionally focused on genetic variation as a substrate for inheritance. However\, advances in our understanding of epigenetics has guided new perspectives on the biological factors that contribute to the inheritance of a broad range of characteristics – particularly those shaped by the environment. In this talk\, I will describe research examining the impact of a broad range of parental experiences\, including exposure to stress\, toxins and altered nutrition\, on offspring development and behavior and illustrate the complex and dynamic routes through which the transmission of characteristics across generations can be achieved.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A New Approach to Resonant Column Testing
DESCRIPTION:The presentation is about a new approach for performing\, analyzing test data\, and modeling the shear modulus and damping from Resonant Column Tests. The “New Approach” makes use of the transfer function method of John P. Wolf (Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction) for modeling the soil specimen as a viscoelastic\, distributed mass element. The new solution is simple and easy to implement with a spreadsheet. It provides for accurate determination of shear modulus and damping over a range of frequencies not just the resonant frequency. The analysis of data is done for each applied value of torque and frequency and captures the true nonlinear properties of soil. The method is the basis for the new ASTM Standard D4015-15ε1. Dr. Drnevich will discuss additional uses of the new approach for simulation and modeling.\n\nVince Drnevich received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame and he completed the Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan. He held faculty positions\nat the University of Kentucky and Purdue University\, serving as Chair and Acting Dean at Kentucky and the Head of School at Purdue. His research focuses on the engineering properties of soils\, especially as measured by stress wave propagation and electromagnetic wave propagation. Dr. Drnevich has been recognized for both his teaching and research by many national awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers\, the American Society for Testing and Materials\, and the American Society for Engineering Education.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Mechanics of Allosteric Materials - How Proteins Mediate Long-Range Interaction
DESCRIPTION:A crucial regulation for life is enabled at the molecular level through allosteric proteins\, whose catalytic activity at the active sites can be significantly enhanced or inhibited by the appearance of specific chemicals binding at their allosteric sites. Predicting the allosteric pathways from protein structures would help us determine regulation networks and design smart drugs. However\, it remains a challenge as the nature of allostery — this elasticity-mediated long-range interaction is understood superficially. To approach the problem with systematic samples\, we introduce a numerical scheme with the model proteins evolving in-silico to accomplish specific allosteric functions. We then obtain statistical features among thousands of solutions to the tasks and deduce rules for the allosteric mechanics. For the geometric task when a specific strain is propagated through the media\, we find commonly applied is an edge-mode mechanism which quickly amplifies the strain signal close to the active site. While for the cooperative task with elastic energy conveyed\, we reveal that the appearance of a mechanism\, an extended and nearly zero energy mode\, dominates the pathway. This mechanism can appear as shear\, hinge\, and twist — designs found in some allosteric proteins\, or be more complicated and hard to visualize. But independent of specific designs\, we predict such a scaling relation for the frequency of the allosteric mechanism that the cooperative energy is optimized to be independent of the protein size. \n\nBio: After obtained Bachelor degree at Peking University in 2010\, Le moved to the United States for his PhD at New York University\, where he worked with Matthieu Wyart studying the glassy dynamics and rigidity transition. After that\, he has been a postdoc fellow at Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara\, where he is applying his physics knowledge to understand mysteries in various scales of biology: from the protein structure to epithelial tissue network to evolution of flu.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Communication and Media Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a U.S. Joint Forces Command Report from 2008 that labeled Mexico a state in risk of “rapid and sudden collapse\,” in this talk\, Dr. Amaya uses a discourse analysis of the concept of “failed state” to illuminate the connections between this concept\, violence\, and order. These connections are highly troubling. They reveal that contemporary ideas about orderly states and state failure cannot be understood without reference to the genealogy of order and its political economy. Order is not simply a normative value\, but the outcome of particular ways of organizing political power and the economy. In the histories this talk engages\, these particular ways of organizing political power and the economy are intertwined with the histories of colonialism and the racial and ethnic ideologies this colonialism depended on.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development/Economics History Seminar: Matrilineal Kinship and Spousal Cooperation: Evidence from the Matrilineal Belt
DESCRIPTION:I examine how matrilineal relative to patrilineal kinship systems affect spousal cooperation. In matrilineal kinship systems\, lineage and inheritance are traced through female members. The structure of matrilineal kinship systems implies that\, relative to patrilineal kinship systems\, women have greater support from their own kin groups\, and husbands have less authority over their wives. I use experimental and physiological measures and a geographic regression discontinuity design along the matrilineal belt in Africa to test how kinship systems affect spousal cooperation. Men and women from matrilineal ethnic groups cooperate less with their spouses in a lab experiment. This is not the case when paired with a stranger of the opposite sex. I examine the implications of matrilineal kinship for the well–being of women and children. Children of matrilineal women are healthier and better educated\, and matrilineal women experience less domestic violence. The results highlight how household outcomes are tied to broader social structures.\n\nSarah Lowes graduated from Harvard University in May 2017 with a Ph.D. from the Political Economy and Government program (Economics track). She joined Bocconi University as an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Fall of 2017. She is a CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar with the Institutions\, Organizations & Growth research program. She is also a Research Associate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). Her research interests are at the intersection of development economics\, political economy\, and economic history. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Evolution of the essential gap gene giant causes hybrid inviability in Drosophila
DESCRIPTION:Hybrids have reduced fitness because of faulty interactions among genes that have diverged between the pure species. The most extreme hybrid defect is inviability. Hybrids therefore provide an easy to screen phenotype to identify what genes and molecular pathways have functionally diverged as genomes differentiate. Here I identify the Drosophila melanogaster allele of the highly conserved and essential gap gene giant (gt) as a key genetic determinant of hybrid inviability in crosses with D. santomea. The presence of this allele in D. melanogaster/D. santomea hybrids causes an abdominal ablation not seen in either pure species. giant is a key developmental regulator whose role in anterior-posterior specification of the dipteran embryo is conserved over 100 million years. The interaction of giant with a second allele\, tailless\,tll\, is involved in the hybrid defects observed in these Drosophila hybrids. These results indicate that even genes with crucial developmental roles that are conserved over vast evolutionary time scales can experience functional evolution that leads to inviability of hybrids

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Medieval Chests as Ideological Objects
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Chests were the most common piece of medieval furniture. As aristocratic households moved from castle to castle\, chests transported the valuables that accompanied them. After the Black Death\, they were instrumental in helping Londoners cope with the consequences of the so-called consumer revolution: what to do with the profusion of dishware\, clothing\, and knick-knacks when they were not in use\, and how to retrieve them when needed. Embedded in the routines of storage were larger ideological concerns of order\, gender\, and behavior\; highly contested issues in the post-plague world. The chest helps us understand how domestic dynamics changed in the two-centuries following the plague.\n\nKatherine French received her PhD in 1993 from the University of Minnesota\, where she worked with Barbara Hanawalt. She taught at SUNY New Paltz\, one of the regional universities in the SUNY system\, for eighteen years before being appointed the J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of medieval English history at the University of Michigan in 2011. She has held fellowships at the Harvard Divinity School\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the Institute for the Humanities at Princeton\, and U-M's Institute for the Humanities. Her scholarship focuses on women\, religion\, and material culture in late medieval England. Her first two monographs\, The People of the Parish: Community Life in a Late Medieval English Diocese (Philadelphia\, 2001) and The Good Women of the Parish: Religion and Gender after the Black Death (Pennsylvania\, 2008)\, analyzed the religious practices of English peasants and townspeople in the two hundred years between the Black Death (1348) and the Reformation. Most Reformation scholarship argued that local life was disintegrating. She was interested in the ways in which community identity and gender shape religious practice. She has also co-authored a text book Women and Gender in the Western Past (Houghton Mifflin\, 2001) and is the author of more than twenty articles and book chapters. Her current book project “Household Goods and Good Households in Late Medieval London” continues to try to understand the consequences of losing between a third to a half of the population to the Black Death. It asks how did increasing consumption after the Black Death by London’s merchants and artisans shaped their household dynamics.\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Contact hkat@umich.edu for future 4-week sessions.*\n\nThursdays from 4:00 - 5:30pm (10/4\, 10/11\, 10/18\, 10/25)\n@ Angel Hall G243 (Ground Floor)\nDuring this 4-session class you will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and learn several skills\, including meditation\, for managing stress and enriching your life. Mindfulness is about developing the ability to be fully attentive to all the moments of your life\, reducing the amount of time you spend worrying about the future or fretting about the past. An important aspect of mindfulness is developing a non-judgmental\, accepting\, even curious\, attitude about your moment-to-moment experience. The more you develop this attitude\, the less you will feel overwhelmed by changes and challenges in your life.\n\nKoru is designed to introduce you to the practice of mindfulness and get you well on your way to developing this important skill. Like learning any new skill\, it takes practice to get comfortable with mindfulness. We invite you to devote yourself to the study and practice of mindfulness over the next four weeks\, and we challenge you to stay curious about what evolves for you as you persistently and patiently practice living mindfully. We also have a free mobile app to track meditation practices for this course!\n\nFor any questions\, please contact Hitomi Katsumi at hkat@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law & Economics: Inducing Negligence
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nWould a potential victim prefer to be treated negligently? We show that even with less than full compensation the answer might be yes. The reason for this is that under tort law victims are often compensated by negligent injurers for the materialization of risks not created by their negligence. Thus\, by being exposed to even slight negligence\, they gain free insurance for those risks. More interestingly\, we also show that under certain circumstances some injurers would prefer to behave negligently toward their victims\, even if they expect to compensate them for risks not created by their negligence. As a result\, victims might select them as their potential injurers\, or in our terms\, “induce negligence.” Although behaving negligently given the selection of the injurer by the victim can be efficient\, inducing negligence is not the first best. In order to achieve the first best\, courts should avoid attributing liability for harms materialized from risks not created by negligence (or resort to contributory negligence). We explain how they should do so.\n\nco-authored with Alon Cohen & Avraham Tabbach

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. Islamophobia and the Struggle for Recognition
DESCRIPTION:Until recently\, the concept of islamophobia was located in the field of religious tolerance and pluralism. Professor Modood pioneered an alternative understanding of the phenomenon\, defining islamophobia instead as anti-Muslim racism in the context of multicultural citizenship. That alternative definition is now emerging as the dominant interpretation\, accepted by UNESCO and gaining traction in social sciences and public discourse alike. Professor Modood will outline the public career of the concept of Islamophobia and discuss his misgivings about the direction that some Islamophobia/Muslim studies are taking.\n\nTariq Modood is professor of sociology\, politics\, and public policy and the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship at the University of Bristol. He is also the co-founder of the international journal Ethnicities. He has held over 40 grants and consultancies\, has over 35 (co-)authored and (co-)edited books and reports\, as well as over 200 articles and chapters. He was a Robert Schuman Fellow at the European University Institute for part of 2013-15\, and a “Thinker in Residence” at the Royal Academy of Flanders\, Brussels in 2017. His latest books include \"Multiculturalism: A Civic Idea\" (2nd ed.\, 2013)\; \"Multiculturalism Rethought\" (2015)\; \"Multiculturalism and Interculturalism: Debating the Dividing Lines\" (2016)\; and \"The Problem of Religious Diversity: European Problems\, Asian Challenges\" (2017). \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to cesmichigan@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:High Performance Computing & Data Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Researchers can leverage high performance computing (HPC) to pose and probe unique and interesting questions. In order to answer those questions\, they need some ability to extract meaning from the data they generate. Data science has recently risen to prominence for its abilities not only to extract this meaning\, but also to turn that meaning into actionable\, data-driven predictions. Combining HPC and data science can allow a researcher to more easily ask questions and discover answers leading to even deeper questions. However\, despite these benefits\, it can be difficult for full-time researchers to learn an emerging field with no guidance while still producing research. To reduce this barrier\, the Scientific Computing Student Club (SC2) presents the HPC and Data Science Workshop Series. For eight weeks in the Fall semester\, we will meet once a week to discuss HPC and Data Science topics\, focusing on how elements of HPC and data science can reinforce research and discovery. There will be no one instructor for this workshop\; instead we will have guest speakers from SC2\, ARC-TS\, MICDE\, and even MathWorks (MATLAB). Attendance at all workshops is encouraged\, but not required. Pizza will be provided.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Race to Nowhere
DESCRIPTION:\"Race to Nowhere\" is a film that calls us to challenge current thinking about how we prepare our children for success. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of students across the country who have been pushed to the brink by over-scheduling\, over-testing and the relentless pressure to achieve\, “Race to Nowhere” points to a silent epidemic in our schools. Through the testimony of educators\, parents and education experts\, it reveals an education system in which cheating has become commonplace\; students have become disengaged\; stress-related illness\, depression and burnout are rampant\; and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. \"\n\nFollowing the film\, a panel will speak and lead discussion and Q&A\, including:\nJohn Boshoven\, Counselor Emeritas and Co-Chair of AAPS Counseling Department\n\nPatricia Manley\, Trustee\, Board of Education\, Ann Arbor Public Schools\n\nTodd Sevig\, Director\, Counseling and Psychological Services\, University of Michigan\n\nThis event is free and co-sponsored by U-M Michigan Community Scholars Program and the Ann Arbor District Library. SUMMARY:Performance:2nd Annual LGBTQ Monologues
DESCRIPTION:Envisioned as an event that meets the need for LGBTQ spaces and visibility\, the LGBTQ monologues is a platform for all of our stories to be heard. Last year the event enabled twelve students to share a personal portrait of queer and trans life at the university in front of an audience of 150 people. \n\nThis year our goal in celebrating the 2nd annual student performances\, is to build partnerships with the local community and student organizations - to accurately represent the LGBTQ population on campus and the width of experiences students faced. The theme this year is \"More Pride. More Color\". We recognize that it is critical that the intersecting identities within the LGBTQ community are accurately represented and are given the equal opportunity to be heard.\n\nTo Share your Story\, Register Here: bit.ly/monologue18\n\nEvent Date/Time: October 11th\, 2018 (National Coming Out Day)\nAnnenberg Auditorium\, Ford School of Public Policy\n735 S. SUMMARY:Ceremony / Service:Salute to Latinas: Radiance In Color
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, many nations were colonized by European imperialists. During colonization\, indigenous cultures and mannerisms were disrupted and subject to transformations that set up unrealistic standards without proper representation of women of color. We will educate the campus community about this misrepresentation and the significance of bringing awareness to the issue. This year’s theme\, “Radiance in Color”\, will be celebrated through poetry\, amazing guest speakers\,  and a diverse array of cultural foods\, awards. At the end of the night\, we will host a gallery portraying women of color dismantling idealized white standards that govern women in different aspects of life. We will have a professional guest speaker discuss the importance of women of color and the negative effect of enforcing white standards. Most importantly\, our goal is to recognize and celebrate the components of what makes a woman and what makes a Latina. By doing so\, we will educate and empower Latinos and other campus communities to respect and honor women as well as be aware of and/or take action against the many oppressions held against women globally.

SUMMARY:Ceremony / Service:Salute to Latinas:
DESCRIPTION:The Salute to Latinas: Fuerza de la Mujer Latina has been Delta Tau Lambda Sorority Incorporated’s signature event for twenty-four years and was created to honor the accomplishments and strengths of all Latina women and women of color. Each year we celebrate our history\, cultures\, and diversity with pride. We strive to find speakers that are well respected in the community. Additionally\, we take this opportunity to announce and celebrate the winner of our Lydia Cruz & Sandra Maria Ramos Scholarship for young emerging Latina leaders. We also award the “Diamond Award” to a woman dedicated to performing above and beyond in community service and the improvement of the Latino community. The night is focused on celebrating our accomplishments and reflecting on how to collectively improve the conditions of the community. The event ends with a special tribute to Latinas and all women of color\, which varies from spoken word to cultural performances. \nThroughout history\, many nations were colonized by European imperialists. During colonization\, indigenous cultures and mannerisms were disrupted and subject to transformations that set up unrealistic standards without proper representation of women of color.
