SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Hineinu – Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:A same-sex Jewish marriage contract (Ketubah). A sign for gender inclusive bathrooms in a Jewish Community Center. A Christmas tree adorned with rainbow-colored ornaments and a Star of David topper. These are three of the 21 photos-with-narratives that constitute “Hineinu – Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit.” Combined with rich\, thought-provoking text\, these photos give insight into the varied experiences of local community members who are both Jewish and queer.\n\n“Photovoice” is the process of putting cameras in the hands of traditionally “voiceless” or marginalized community members to allow them to record\, reflect on\, and share their community’s strengths and concerns. Photovoice participants have the opportunity to capture their current experiences through pictures\, with the goal of sparking dialogue and action related to the themes depicted in the photos.\n\nAs you view this Photovoice exhibit\, we hope that you will consider what it means to be inclusive and welcoming\, and that you will continue to develop an awareness of the diversity of other people’s experiences both within and outside of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Organic Fiction: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Hava Gurevich’s colorful abstractions feature botanical\, aquatic and microscopic motifs as she explores repeating patterns in nature. Blending images from the real world and her imagination\, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty\, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature\, such as tree branches\, ice patterns\, twisted vines\, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures\, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. Earlier this year\, Ghost Pony Press released Cope’s eighth poetry collection: The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems.\n\nOn view during Special Collections Research Center hours: Monday-Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Nancy Blum\, RC Class of '85
DESCRIPTION:RC alumna '85 Nancy Blum returns to East Quad to exhibit her drawings of flowers and to deliver the 10/19 Robertson Lecture on her public art installations. \n\nExcerpted from her artist statement:\nMy large‐scale works on paper\, rendered in ink\, colored pencil\, gouache and graphite\, portray a fantastic realm in which flowers own the space. I use a variety of 16th and 17th-century botanical images\, from Chinese plum blossoms to German botanicals\, as starting points for each drawing. Rather than alluding to an actual landscape\, I instead combine species of plants in the same drawing that would not customarily exist together in nature. Obsessive handwork creates intricate layers of visual information to be discovered over time and\, in this way\, the works become a seductive meditation for the viewer.\n\nI use botanical motifs to create images that are universally associated with growth and continuity. My deeper intent is to conjure the ‘flower’ as an active\, forceful agent\, subverting a culturally conditioned point of view that often deems the ephemeral and the organic as less powerful and of limited value. My ‘wonderland’ presents a view of life that pulses with expansive fecundity\; hopefully\, it also propels comprehension of the connectedness of all beings within the limitless energy operating throughout this world.\n\nWhen making art for public spaces\, I strive to invest these commissions with similar content\, while bringing beauty and a high level of craft to a particular environment. As I conceive and develop each piece\, I respond to the specifics of the surrounding architecture\, ecosystem\, and community in an effort to compellingly meet the needs of the site. My studio practice\, in turn\, is invigorated by opportunities to design work in relationship to an existing framework\, and the special demands and responsibilities this process entails.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire
DESCRIPTION:Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement\, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse\, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination\; re-writing the canonical accounts of history\; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.\n\nAt a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees\, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists\, designers\, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art\, design\, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.\n\nArtists: Rudolf Baranik\, Stephanie Dinkins\, Emory Douglas\, Brendan Fernandes\, Chitra Ganesh\, Carole Harris\, Maren Hassinger\, Al Loving\, Josh MacPhee\, Native Art Department International\, Michele Oka Doner\, Yoko Ono\, Kameelah Janan Rasheed\, Martha Rosler\, Buster Simpson\, Gregory Sholette\, Leni Sinclair\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Graem Whyte\, and Zafos Xagoraris. \n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Manufacturing Research Seminar Series: Recurrent Data Analysis in the Framework of Socket Models
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nConsider a set of “sibling” components in a multi-socket repairable system. In the case of an automobile\, for example\, these siblings would be spark plugs\, light bulbs\, tires\, that is\, identical components that are coded with the same part number. When field [big] data are analyzed\, a dilemma arises as to how to interpret a recurrent replacement of a sibling component: as a secondary failure of the component that has already been replaced once\, or as the first failure of the component’s sibling(s)? From the stand point of root-cause analysis\, the task is to understand whether recurrent failures are related to (i) a particular sibling\, which might be operating in inauspicious conditions relative to other siblings\, or (ii) to all siblings on the vehicle. One could attribute Scenario (i) to a system-level (e.g. system interaction) problem\, and Scenario (ii) to a component-level (supplier quality) problem. We first review a statistical procedure that solves the above-mentioned dilemma in the framework of ordinary renewal process (ORP) and then extend the discussion to the non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) and the g-renewal process (GRP). \n\nBio\nVasiliy Krivtsov is the Director of Reliability Analytics at the Ford Motor Company. He also holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor of Reliability Engineering at the University of Maryland\, where he teaches a graduate course on Advanced Reliability Data Analysis. Krivtsov has earned a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Kharkov Polytechnic Institute\, Ukraine and a PhD in Reliability Engineering from the University of Maryland\, USA. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Friday Lecture Series. Lao Murals in Northeast Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Research on temple murals in Thailand has focused on those commissioned by the rich and famous—royalty\, nobility\, or wealthy entrepreneurs—in historic centers of power\, such as Auytthaya\, Thonburi\, Bangkok and to a lesser extent the northern Lanna kingdom. Little has been written in either Thai or English about the unique early 20th century murals of ethnic Lao people in the Northeast\, a region also known as Isan. These murals\, rather than being inferior copies of those in the central region\, are inspired by local Buddhist stories and practices and are executed with a verve and vision unique to their creators. Among their most distinctive characteristics are their diverse compositions and their location on the exterior of ordination halls. \n\nLocated in villages rather than provincial capitals\, these humble murals are not well-known even in Isan. However\, Wat Chaisi\, a temple in a village 20 kilometers from Khon Kaen city is quickly becoming famous as a model of preservation\, education\, and Buddhist celebrations and is even being advertised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The talk will include pictures of many murals and summaries of the stories depicted. \n\n ---\nThe following text will be included on all II events unless you indicate otherwise:If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jessi Cisewski\, Assistant Professor of Statistics & Data Science\, Yale University
DESCRIPTION:Data exhibiting complicated spatial structures are common in many areas of science (e.g. cosmology\, biology)\, but can be difficult to analyze. Persistent homology is a popular approach within the area of Topological Data Analysis that offers a way to represent\, visualize\, and interpret complex data by extracting topological features\, which can be used to infer properties of the underlying structures. For example\, TDA may be useful for analyzing the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe\, which is an intricate and spatially complex web of matter. The output from persistent homology\, called persistence diagrams\, summarize the different ordered holes in the data (e.g. connected components\, loops\, voids). I will introduce persistent homology\, present functional transformations of persistence diagrams useful for inference\, and discuss several applications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 836 Seminar: Bernard Martin\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Bernard J. Martin received an Engineering degree in applied physics from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Marseille\, France\; Ph.D. (biomedical engineering) and Dr.Sci. (Neuroscience) degrees from the Université de Provence\, Marseille\, France\, in 1980 and 1989\, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering and Adjunct Research Scientist in the School of Kinesiology\, University of Michigan. His research interests are in human motor control\, sensorimotor systems\, muscle fatigue\, biomechanics\, motion simulation\, human vibration\, and stroke rehabilitation.\n\nAbstract: Work-related neck and shoulder pains are highly prevalent in jobs with low physical exposure. Myalgia of the trapezius muscle is one of the most prevalent work-related neck-shoulder disorders and muscle fatigue is widely considered a precursor of such disorders. There is evidence that long-lasting low-level activity of the trapezius muscle appears as a crucial link in the pathway from workplace physiological and psychological demands to the development of work related neck pain. A possible approach to reduce the risks associated with muscle fatigue is to disrupt the monotonous muscle activity by adding frequent\, active breaks during the working task. In the first phase of our investigation the long lasting component of trapezius muscle fatigue resulting from low-level\, sustained working task and spatio-temporal distribution of EMG activity are investigated in two conditions including passive break or active disruption of muscle contraction. Muscle fatigue develops and persists after the end of the workday. It appears that the alteration of force control may be associated with the corresponding fatigue. However\, these phenomena seem to be counteracted by disruption of muscle contraction monotony by active interventions during the workday. Indeed\, the presence of active disruptions also induces changes in the timing and degree of EMG activity as well as features of trapezius active areas. The extent of these adaptations appears to be subject and work task dependent but seem to be beneficial for the reduction of muscle fatigue.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Diversity Summit Lecture: Baldomero Olivera\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Baldomero Olivera\, Ph.D. will provide this year's LSI Diversity Summit Lecture\, as part of the University of Michigan's Annual Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Summit.\n\nAbstract:\nThere are 1000 different species of venomous cone snails and over 20\,000 venomous snails in the marine environment (Superfamily Conoidea). Their venoms are complex\, each with 100 to 200 different bioactive components\, and each species has a different set of venom components. This talk will focus on the ca. 150 species that prey on fish. The fish-hunting cone snails have evolved different strategies to capture their fish prey\; and by understanding how the different lineages evolved and the behavior of the snails\, and how their venoms affect the behavior of fish (and mice)\, insight has been gained into how different molecular components of the venom work. As a consequence of this research\, there is one approved drug from these venoms\, two that have reached clinical trials\, and several in pre-clinical development.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nOlivera is a Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Utah\, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor and an adjunct professor at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society\, the U.S. National Academy of Science and the Institute of Medicine. His awards include the Outstanding Alumni Award of Caltech\, the Redi Award from the International Society for Toxinology and the Harvard Foundation Scientist of the Year 2007 Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE285 Undergraduate Seminar: Taking Aerospace Engineering to New Heights with the Power of Data
DESCRIPTION:Eric Muir\, Ph.D.\, The Boeing Company\n\nA valuable resource is becoming increasingly available to engineers across all disciplines: data. Data is changing the way society lives and works from social media to automobile safety to smart manufacturing. While data has always played a key role in engineering\, the volume and variety now available enables new insights on the behavior of complex systems and their environment. When leveraged properly\, this influx of data provides an opportunity for significant advancement in engineering solutions that benefit society.\n\n\nIn this seminar\, the impacts of big data and machine learning technologies on data-driven engineering are explored with emphasis on the aerospace industry. Modern aircraft are outfitted with thousands of sensors and produce hundreds of gigabytes of data each flight. Combined with data collected during design\, build\, and testing\, engineers have a wealth of information to increase safety\, enhance value\, and improve future designs. Engineers will be instrumental in harnessing the power of all this data\, collecting the right information and making it available to the right person at the right time.\n\n \n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nEric Muir earned his Bachelors\, Masters and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and currently works at the Boeing Company in Seattle\, WA. He is currently a data scientist in autonomous systems development combining his passion for engineering and aviation with new technologies in data analytics and machine learning. Prior to this role\, Eric was a structural dynamics engineer within the Propulsion Systems Division where he advanced fan blade-out and windmilling dynamic analyses of turbofan engines\, particularly the GE9X on the 777X. In addition to his work at Boeing\, he also teaches a structural dynamics course at the University of Washington.\n\n\nEric’s interests as an aerospace engineer center on tackling challenging and complex problems using cutting-edge technologies. His work spans structural dynamics and fluid-structure interaction and is expanding into the areas of machine learning and autonomous flight. He is enthusiastic about the impact of these advanced technologies on the design\, manufacture\, and operation of the next generation of sophisticated aerospace systems.\n\nEric lives in Seattle with his wife and daughter and is an avid outdoorsman and pilot who enjoys taking full advantage of the recreation in the Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Correcting misinformation: Anti-vaxxers beliefs about the cause of autism
DESCRIPTION:Individuals are susceptible to misinformation\, such as the incorrect notion that vaccines cause autism. Despite strong evidence to the contrary\, many individuals still believe that childhood vaccinations cause autism (DeStefano et al.\, 2013\; Horne et al.\, 2015\; Jain et al.\, 2015). Here\, we examine the conditions under which this misconception may be eliminated. The current study is a replication of Horne et al. (2015)\, who found that communicating the risk of diseases targeted by vaccines was more effective than directly correcting misinformation. The findings from this study will provide the general public as well as public health officials with a scientific basis for how to successfully alter attitudes towards vaccines.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Determine the Number of States in Hidden Markov Models VIA Marginal Likelihood
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Hidden Markov models (HMM) have been widely adopted by scientists from various fields to model stochastic systems: the underlying process is a discrete Markov chain and the observations are noisy realizations of the underlying process. Determining the number of hidden states for an HMM is a model selection problem\, which has yet to be satisfactorily solved\, especially for the popular Gaussian HMM with heterogeneous covariance. In this paper\, we propose a consistent method for determining the number of hidden states of HMM based on the marginal likelihood. We give a rigorous proof of the consistency of the proposed marginal likelihood method and provide simulation studies to compare the proposed method with the currently mostly adopted method\, the Bayesian information criterion (BIC)\, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed marginal likelihood method. The proposed method is applied to single-molecule data and yields interesting scientific insights.\n\nBio: Yang Chen received her Ph.D. (2017) in Statistics from Harvard University and joined the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor of Statistics and Research Assistant Professor at the Michigan Institute of Data Science (MIDAS). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Distinguished Alumna 2018: A Conversation with Helen Foster
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Rebecca (Becky) Lange will talk with Helen Foster\, our 2018 Distinguished Alumna\, about Helen’s remarkable geological career and life. Helen Foster obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1946. She developed her passion for mapping unknown geological terrains as a graduate student in Wyoming\, and thoroughly enjoyed her time at Camp Davis the geological field station where the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences teaches a wide variety of field courses. After she received her Ph.D.\, she leapt at the opportunity to work for the U.S. Geological Survey in Japan\, during the U.S. military occupation immediately following the Second World War. She spent nearly a decade working with and befriending several Japanese geologists while compiling geological maps of Japan and the Kurile Islands. On her return to the United States\, she continued her work with the U.S. Geological Survey\, and became deeply involved with creating the first geological maps of Alaska. She was a pioneer in so many ways\, as an intrepid young woman in Japan\, and then as one among the first geologists to map the Alaskan wilderness\, which was without roads and so field work involved being dropped off by a float airplane on a lake and spending weeks mapping and camping before being picked up again or re-supplied. Helen loved it! Throughout her lengthy career she has supported the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences - as an inspiration to our faculty and students\, as a member of the Department’s Alumni Advisory Board\, and as a generous donor. We will present an interview with Helen Foster recorded earlier this year.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MEMS Workshop. Domesticating Dragomans: Affect\, Homosociality and Textual Circulations
DESCRIPTION:The chapter under consideration is from a book in progress about dragomans (diplomatic interpreters) in seventeenth-century Istanbul and explores the relationship between (homosocial) space and affect in the making of a dragoman corps. Through two case studies it examines how Venetian officials sought (and often failed) to cultivate dragomans’ heteronormative affective ties and loyal Venetian political subjectivity through the practice of extended residential apprenticeship in the Venetian embassy compound (bailate) and attended technologies of surveillance and controlled textual circulation. The two cases explored here\, of dragomans’ attempted unionization in 1660 and of an aborted love affair between a dragoman apprentice and the bailate barber in 1588\, suggest the competing ways in which dragomans and their Venetian employers attempted to control publicity about potentially scandalous affairs\, how they mobilized patronage networks that linked the bailate with Venetian metropolitan institutions and powerful patrons\, and how the archival traces from which these cases of \"misplaced\" affect are reconstructed themselves need to be situated in the context of evolving diplomatic protocol and Ottoman--as much as Venetian--social structures and sexual regimes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Seminar Title: \"Carbonaceous nanoparticle and biological membrane - a molecular dynamic perspective\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Nanoparticles have been widely utilized in many health-related fields\, such as drug delivery\, cancer therapy\, biolabeling\, and biosensors. Studies on the molecular details of the interaction between nanoparticles and biological nanosystems are crucial for obtaining information on the mechanisms of the possible outcomes of these nanomaterials\, such as cytotoxicity\, biological accumulation\, and long-term effects. In this talk\, we will introduce a recent model that we are developing to help understand and predict the interaction between carbonaceous nanoparticles and biological membrane based on the molecular structural information. The model presents in detail how molecular properties of nanoparticles such as size\, shape and chemical properties affect the organization of the nanoparticles in the membrane\, as well how different components in the membrane affect the selectivity on nanoparticles. This critical information is helpful for designing engineered nanoparticles that are biocompatible\, bioavailable for different environmental and biological applications.
