These are three of the 21 photos-with-narratives that constitute \u201cHineinu \u2013 Here We Are: An LGBTQ+ Jewish Photovoice Exhibit.\u201d Combined with rich, thought-provoking text, these photos give insight into the varied experiences of local community members who are both Jewish and queer.\r\n\r\n\u201cPhotovoice\u201d is the process of putting cameras in the hands of traditionally \u201cvoiceless\u201d or marginalized community members to allow them to record, reflect on, and share their community\u2019s strengths and concerns. I use a variety of 16th and 17th-century botanical images, from Chinese plum blossoms to German botanicals, as starting points for each drawing. Rather than alluding to an actual landscape, I instead combine species of plants in the same drawing that would not customarily exist together in nature. Obsessive handwork creates intricate layers of visual information to be discovered over time and, in this way, the works become a seductive meditation for the viewer.\r\n\r\nI use botanical motifs to create images that are universally associated with growth and continuity. My deeper intent is to conjure the \u2018flower\u2019 as an active, forceful agent, subverting a culturally conditioned point of view that often deems the ephemeral and the organic as less powerful and of limited value. However, cooperation is inherently risky since by participating we make ourselves dependent on the cooperative acts of others which may or may not occur. The last decades have seen a surge of investigations into the psychological mechanisms that help people overcome these risks. A central proposition that has arisen from this research is that social interdependence may be an important evolutionary and proximate source of expectations and motivations that contribute to human cooperative success (Robert, 2005; Tomasello et al., 2012; Sterelny, 2012). In this talk, I will present research that addresses this issue from a developmental perspective by examining the role of social interdependence in children\u2019s cooperative decision making. The results suggest that by at least age 7 children hold the expectation that interactions marked by social interdependence will be mutually beneficial which enables them coordinate their decisions with one another even without communicating. A second study with German and Kenyan 5- to 6-year-olds using a cooperative version of the famous marshmallow task indicates that social interdependence facilitates children\u2019s motivation to invest effort in cooperative activities. It will focus in particular on the specific terminology used in the Qur\u2019an and Hadith\u2014in particular the terms tamathil (figural likenesses), asnam (idols), and ansab (sacred stones or betyls)\u2014in order to distinguish the semantic and conceptual categories that were used by Muslim writers to classify various forms of art-making along with their associated practices. Such terms were further finessed within historical and jurisprudential writings, in which the Solomonic, Abrahamic, and Mosaic paradigms concerning statuary and idols served to both legitimize figural statuary while simultaneously castigating three-dimensional and even pendant imagery as potentially subject to devotional worship. In the majority of texts, images were not understood as prohibited per se. Rather, their modalities of display and use proved of paramount significance within the perennial debates concerned with image-making, as is the case in all global religious cultures. Skirting the \u201cbroad swath\u201d method, this talk thus aims to pinpoint some the finer issues raised by the textual corpus as it intersects with artworks and paintings in order to demonstrate that practices of figural representation in Islamic traditions most often were (and still are) guided by cultural and political expediency rather than religious or legal principle.\r\n\r\nChristiane Gruber is Professor of Islamic Art and Associate Chair in the History of Art Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her research interests span medieval Islamic art to contemporary visual culture. She has authored two books on Islamic texts and images of the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s ascension and has edited about a dozen volumes on Islamic book arts, ascension texts and images, and visual and material culture. This lecture will focus on two Class B radical SAM methylases involved in the biosynthesis of antibacterial agents. Fom3, which performs a key step in the biosynthesis of the broad-spectrum antibiotic fosfomycin, catalyzes the methylation of the sp3-hybridized C2\u2019\u2019 carbon of cytidylyl-2-hydroxyethylphosphonate to yield cytidylyl-2-hydroxypropylphosphonate. She is chancellor of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, holds an MBA, and is an IT specialist by education. Nowacka is a member of the Women\u2019s Congress National Council and chair of the progressive association \u201cInitiative Poland.\u201d She is also co-founder and deputy chair of the Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka Foundation, an organization which aims to promote equality, social justice, and social inclusion. Nowacka headed the election committee for the \u201cUnited Left\u201d coalition during the 2015 Polish parliamentary election, and from 2015-17 she was a co-chair of the \u201cTw\u00f3j Ruch\u201d political party. In 2016 and 2017 she organized and chaired the \u201cSave Women\u201d initiative, a civil bill which aimed to liberalize abortion laws in Poland. In October 2016, in response to an attempt by the political right to implement a total ban on abortion, Nowacka became a leading figure in the \u201cCzarny Protest\u201d action, a massive nationwide demonstration which ultimately succeeded in forcing the political right to back down.
