SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Organic Fiction: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Hava Gurevich’s colorful abstractions feature botanical\, aquatic and microscopic motifs as she explores repeating patterns in nature. Blending images from the real world and her imagination\, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty\, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature\, such as tree branches\, ice patterns\, twisted vines\, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures\, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. Earlier this year\, Ghost Pony Press released Cope’s eighth poetry collection: The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems.\n\nOn view during Special Collections Research Center hours: Monday-Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Resting-state fMRI connectivity and brain co-activations\"
DESCRIPTION:Resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Image (rsfMRI) signal correlations are widely used for charting functional brain connectivity in healthy and diseased brains\, and has revolutionized our understanding of the organization of large-scale brain networks and their abnormalities in various brain diseases. However\, the neurophysiological basis underlying the images-based measures of brain connectivity/dynamics remains largely elusive. In this seminar\, I describe multiple research projects that promoted the mechanistic understanding of the resting-state fMRI connectivity/dynamics. Combining multi-modal recordings from animals and humans under various brain conditions\, these projects provide new insight into the dynamic nature of the resting-state connectivity\, and reveal the electrophysiological correlates and behavioral relevance of global non-specific components of rsfMRI correlations.\n\nXiao Liu\, Ph.D.\, is a professor in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Penn State University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Nancy Blum\, RC Class of '85
DESCRIPTION:RC alumna '85 Nancy Blum returns to East Quad to exhibit her drawings of flowers and to deliver the 10/19 Robertson Lecture on her public art installations. \n\nExcerpted from her artist statement:\nMy large‐scale works on paper\, rendered in ink\, colored pencil\, gouache and graphite\, portray a fantastic realm in which flowers own the space. I use a variety of 16th and 17th-century botanical images\, from Chinese plum blossoms to German botanicals\, as starting points for each drawing. Rather than alluding to an actual landscape\, I instead combine species of plants in the same drawing that would not customarily exist together in nature. Obsessive handwork creates intricate layers of visual information to be discovered over time and\, in this way\, the works become a seductive meditation for the viewer.\n\nI use botanical motifs to create images that are universally associated with growth and continuity. My deeper intent is to conjure the ‘flower’ as an active\, forceful agent\, subverting a culturally conditioned point of view that often deems the ephemeral and the organic as less powerful and of limited value. My ‘wonderland’ presents a view of life that pulses with expansive fecundity\; hopefully\, it also propels comprehension of the connectedness of all beings within the limitless energy operating throughout this world.\n\nWhen making art for public spaces\, I strive to invest these commissions with similar content\, while bringing beauty and a high level of craft to a particular environment. As I conceive and develop each piece\, I respond to the specifics of the surrounding architecture\, ecosystem\, and community in an effort to compellingly meet the needs of the site. My studio practice\, in turn\, is invigorated by opportunities to design work in relationship to an existing framework\, and the special demands and responsibilities this process entails.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LOOKING BEYOND COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM: A NEW IMMIGRATION POLITICS
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chin received her Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley in 1999 and a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Washington. She is a scholar of modern Europe with particular expertise in immigration and human mobility\; race and ethnicity\; and colonialism and post-colonialism. Her work addresses some of the most pressing issues in modern European history\, specifically the massive socio-cultural effects of postwar labor migration on European nations and their struggles to come to grips with the radical demographic diversity it produced.\n\nHow did anti-Muslim sentiment\, xenophobia\, and populism become major concerns for European society? What are the background factors driving this political upheaval in Europe? How\, in other words\, did Europe become multicultural and what have been the larger social and political effects of this dramatic demographic transformation? Can Europe structurally and financially afford to allow large numbers of immigrants to settle and still retain its culture and current liberal policies amid these changes?\n\nThis is the second in a series of six weekly lectures. The subject is immigration. The next lecture will be on November 8. The title is THE MYTH OF THE LINE.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire
DESCRIPTION:Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement\, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse\, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination\; re-writing the canonical accounts of history\; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.\n\nAt a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees\, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists\, designers\, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art\, design\, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.\n\nArtists: Rudolf Baranik\, Stephanie Dinkins\, Emory Douglas\, Brendan Fernandes\, Chitra Ganesh\, Carole Harris\, Maren Hassinger\, Al Loving\, Josh MacPhee\, Native Art Department International\, Michele Oka Doner\, Yoko Ono\, Kameelah Janan Rasheed\, Martha Rosler\, Buster Simpson\, Gregory Sholette\, Leni Sinclair\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Graem Whyte\, and Zafos Xagoraris. \n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Promoting Respect as a Solution to Workplace Sexual Harassment\n\nAbstract: Despite\, organizational policies aimed at sexual harassment prevention\, harassing behaviors remain pervasive at work. Scholars have noted that anti-harassment policies may not be effective because they often focus heavily on unwanted sexual pursuit and sexual coercion and do little to tackle the broader climate of hostility and disrespect that sets the stage for sexual harassment. Thus\, the present study examines whether anti-harassment efforts are more effective at reducing both sexual and hostile forms of harassment\, for men and women\, if expanded to emphasize positive\, prosocial norms of respect. In a large military sample\, we tested whether leader respect promotion uniquely predicted sexual advance harassment and gender harassment. In addition\, we examined whether leader respect promotion moderates the relationship between leader harassment prevention behaviors (a previously established predictor) and the frequency of sexual advance and gender harassment. We found that leader respect promotion negatively predicted gender harassment and was not related to sexual advance harassment\, for both men and women. In addition\, leader respect promotion moderated the relationship between harassment prevention behaviors and gender harassment and sexual advance harassment (except for men) such that harassment was lowest when leaders promoted respect and prevented harassment. These results suggest that while traditional harassment prevention efforts remain important for deterring sexual harassment\, a respectful climate is also an effective tool against sexual harassment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Jesus Loves Japan: Pentecostal Christianity among Nikkei “Return Migrants” from Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Today\, there are roughly 186\,000 Brazilian nationals living in Japan\, the majority of whom are of Japanese descent. While they benefit from the visa policy that confers the right to settlement virtually as a right of blood\, they often feel discriminated in their supposed ancestral homeland. In this social context\, many have been converting to Pentecostalism\, which has exploded in Latin America since the 1970s. Based on a yearlong fieldwork conducted in Toyota\, Japan\, this lecture tells a story about the Nikkei Brazilians who envision Pentecostalism as the “third culture” that can help them transcend ethno-national boundaries. \n \nSuma Ikeuchi studies the intersection of religion\, diaspora\, and citizenship with a focus on Global Japan. After obtaining her PhD in Anthropology from Emory University in 2016\, she taught Religious Studies at the University of Alabama before joining the Department of Liberal Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to bkinzer@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: David Sherwood\, Ph.D.\, Duke University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nBasement membranes are an ancient form of extracellular matrix that assemble as thin\, dense sheets that underlie most tissues. Basement membranes regulate numerous cellular and tissue functions\, and basement membrane dysregulation is a hallmark of many cancers and a driver of tumor progression. Despite their importance\, we know little about how basement membranes are uniquely constructed\, how they grow\, how they turnover\, and how they regulate so many cell and tissue properties.\n\nC. elegans is a powerful model to understand basement membrane function\, as it has single genes encoding most basement membrane matrix components and receptors. We have used CRISPR/Cas-9 genome editing to create a basement membrane toolkit\, where we have knocked genes encoding fluorescent proteins into all major basement membrane matrix components (18 genes) and receptors (13 genes). I will present a brief overview of how we are using the basement membrane toolkit to elucidate how basement membranes are constructed\, how they grow\, and the dynamic nature of basement membranes\, including diverse turnover rates of basement membrane components (seconds to hours). Finally\, I will discuss how the toolkit is revealing specialized\, non-sheet functions for basement membrane proteins\, such as linking neighboring tissues together and constructing stem cell niches.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nDavid Sherwood\, Ph.D.\, grew up in Champaign\, Illinois\, and spent summers backpacking in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University (with a year in Durham\, England) in 1990. He received his Ph.D. in the lab of David McClay\, Ph.D.\, from Duke University Department of Biology in 1997\, where his thesis work identified and determined the function of the sea urchin Notch receptor. Dave carried out his postdoctoral work in the lab of Paul Sternberg\, Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology\, where he was trained in C. elegans genetics and cell biology. He joined the faculty at Duke University in 2005\, where he is now a Professor of Biology\, Co-Director of the Regeneration Next Initiative for Regenerative Biology\, Director of the Development and Stem Cell Biology Program\, and Co-Director of the Embryology Course in at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole\, Massachusetts. His research focuses on elucidating cell-extracellular matrix interactions that occur during cell invasion\, stem cell niche formation\, and tissue formation\, growth and regeneration.\n\nBoxed lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Presentation:EHAP Speaker Series: Living Together: Burrows\, Brains & Breeding
DESCRIPTION:Living in groups has profound impacts on numerous aspects of a species’ biology. As a result\, understanding why groups form and why social relationships within groups vary are central themes in behavioral biology. This seminar will reveal how studies of largely unobservable subterranean rodents are generating new insights into the ecology\, endocrinology\, and evolution of group living. From naked mole-rats to tuco-tucos\, tojos\, and cururos\, these often little-known animals are helping to reshape our understanding of animal social behavior.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Behaviorally Stable Vehicle Platooning for Energy Savings
DESCRIPTION:A cooperative vehicle platoon is a set of vehicles driving together with low in-vehicle distance enabled by the connected and automated vehicle technology. One of the major benefits of vehicle platooning is energy savings due to air drag reduction. However\, as vehicles at different positions in a platoon save differently from the platooning\, e.g.\, the lead vehicles may save little\, some drivers or owners of vehicles may not be willing to join or stay in the platoon even if they are advised to do so\, yielding behaviorally unstable platoons. The instability further lead to chaos in traffic flow\, which is likely to bring unnecessary traffic congestions. As such behavioral side of the problem has been drawn little attention in literature\, this study intends to fill this void by focusing on the drivers and owners’ economic consideration of platooning. We envision a freeway system where vehicles are capable of platooning but each platoon has limited size. A novel utility function is proposed to measure a vehicle’s benefit in platooning. Based on that\, a mathematical programming model is established to find the optimal platoon formation that specifies which vehicles should be platooned together and their platoon speeds as well as positions to achieve the maximum system benefit. A benefit allocation mechanism\, either charges or compensates the vehicles\, is then created to incentivize them to form and maintain the desired platoon formation. The model framework is further extended to the setting with an environmental concern\, where the proposed mechanism has been shown to benefit not only the vehicles\, but also the whole society by bringing greater reductions on traffic emissions.\n\nXiaotong Sun is a PhD student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A War Remembered: Biafra at 50
DESCRIPTION:By some estimates\, the Nigerian Civil War was the greatest catastrophe ever to have occurred in Africa. Over the June\, 1967 to January\, 1970 period\, the conflict may have claimed as many as two million lives. This presentation will be delivered by a former relief officer of the International Committee of the Red Cross who participated in the Biafra relief action over the May to October\, 1969 period as an entry-level logistics worker\, and from November 1969 to July 1970 as a “UN Forward Observer” assigned to the Third Division of the Nigerian Army. The presentation outlines causes and consequences of the conflict\, procedures followed by the relief action\, and examples of strategies that failed to have their intended impact. Lessons from Biafra attest to the value of implementation science in crisis situations. \n \nDr. James Phillips is currently Professor\, Population and Family Health\, Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health\, Mailman School of Public Health where he teaches demography and directs research on health systems development in Africa. He has a Ph.D. in Sociology/Demography from the University of Michigan.\n\nA reception will follow the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE 585 Graduate Seminar Series - Interdisciplinary Aeronautics Studies: from UAVs to Future Mission-Adaptive Air Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Weihua Su\, Associate Professor\, Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics\, The University of Alabama\n\nThe structural and aerodynamic optimization of aircraft planforms usually results in a highly flexible wing design\, which undergoes large deformation when subject to normal operating loads\, exhibiting a geometrically nonlinear behavior. This talk starts from a brief introduction on low-order aeroelastic modeling approaches for flexible aircraft in free flight. Furthermore\, recent advancements in digital composite materials\, as well as micro/nano sensor and actuator technologies have made in-flight adaptive wing/aircraft morphing a reachable goal and may open new design degrees of freedom when developing future green air vehicles with increased safety assurance and flight performance. In this talk\, interdisciplinary research on next-generation mission-adaptive airplanes is also discussed\, which is beyond the conventional realm of aeroelastic research and encompasses emerging technologies\, such as advanced materials and structures\, multi-objective design and optimization\, and optimal flight control and performance. Some recent studies on mission-adaptive air vehicles conducted by the speaker are presented.\n\nAbout the Speaker...\n\nDr. Weihua Su is currently an Associate Professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Alabama. He earned his B.S. (2000) and M.S. (2002) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA)\, China\, and his Ph.D. (2008) degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). Dr. Su’s research interests include nonlinear aeroelasticity and control synthesis of flexible mission-adaptive aircraft with adaptive multifunctional structures and sensing technologies\, as well as dynamics and control of flexible launch vehicles. His research has been funded by NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD)\, NASA Ames Research Center\, and NASA Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Su is a senior member of AIAA and an elected\nmember of the AIAA Structural Dynamics Technical Committee. He is also an elected member of the ASME Aerospace Division Structures and Materials Technical Committee.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brent Hayes Edwards Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Brent Hayes Edwards (Columbia) will present his digital restoration\, from the original 16mm reels\, of the legendary short film Sweet Willie Rollbar’s Orientation. Featuring an original soundtrack by saxophonist Julius Hemphill\, the film was made in the spring of 1972 by Hemphill\, the poet K. Curtis Lyle\, the actor Malinke Elliott\, and other members of the Black Artists’ Group of St. Louis. An astonishing document of the post-Black Arts period\, the film includes a series of fragmented\, surreal “trickster tale” vignettes set in the detritus of the St. Louis inner city. In his keynote directly following the screening\, Edwards will place the film in the context of the Black Artists’ Group\, and more broadly in relation to other black experiments in multimedia aesthetics in the early 1970s.\n\n\nBrent Edwards is a Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University\, where he is also affiliated with the Center for Jazz Studies and the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. He is also the Director of the Scholars-in-Residence Program at the Schomburg Center of the New York Public Library. His books include The Practice of Diaspora: Literature\, Translation\, and the Rise of Black Internationalism (Harvard University Press\, 2003)\, which was awarded the John Hope Franklin Prize of the American Studies Association\, the Gilbert Chinard Prize of the Society for French Historical Studies\, and runner-up for the James Russell Lowell Prize of the Modern Language Association\; the co-edited essay collection Uptown Conversation: The New Jazz Studies (Columbia University Press\, 2004)\; and scholarly editions of classic works by W. E. B. Du Bois\, Frederick Douglass\, and Joseph Conrad. Edwards was the co-editor of the journal Social Text from 2001-2011\, and served as the Harlem Renaissance period editor for the Third Edition of the Norton Anthology of African American Literature (2014). \n\nEdwards published three books in 2017: a scholarly edition (in collaboration with Jean-Christophe Cloutier) of Claude McKay’s long-lost novel\, Amiable with Big Teeth (Penguin Classics)\; Edwards’s translation of Michel Leiris’s monumental 1934 Phantom Africa (Seagull Books)\, and Edwards’s own monograph Epistrophies: Jazz and the Literary Imagination (Harvard University Press). Edwards is currently at work on three different projects. First\, he is completing a book called “Black Radicalism and the Archive” (based on the Du Bois Lectures he presented at Harvard in 2015) about the collecting activities of black political activists\, artists\, and intellectuals including Arturo Schomburg\, Hubert Harrison\, Ada “Bricktop” Smith\, Alexander Gumby\, and C. L. R. James. In another long-term project\, Edwards is working on a book-length cultural history of the downtown New York “loft jazz” scene in New York in the 1970s\, when musicians such as Ornette Coleman\, Sam Rivers\, Rashied Ali\, and Joe Lee Wilson opened their own performance spaces in SoHo\, NoHo and the East Village. And finally\, Edwards is writing another study called “Art of the Lecture” (about lectures as a genre combining pedagogy and performance)\, a book project he began during his tenure as a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Communication and Media Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The health system of the United States (US) has long exhibited wide disparities in health and health care. Although the government has set increasingly ambitious goals to reduce health disparities\, overall progress has been rather modest\, and race and ethnicity remain as significant predictors of health disparities in the US. Transformative developments in information and communication technology (ICT) may offer opportunities to reduce minority health disparities. However\, as exemplified by the concept of digital divide\, the current context in which ICTs are being deployed is already characterized by inequalities for minority populations. Several recent studies report that mobile communication technology may serve as a way to overcome the digital divide and reach minority populations effectively. This talk describes an intervention study of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and the University of Guam to use mobile technology to reduce cervical cancer screening disparity among Chuukese and Marshallese women\, a recent migrant group from the United States Affiliated Pacific Islands who suffer from high and unequal burden of chronic and infectious diseases.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development Seminar
DESCRIPTION:A New Engel on the Gains from Trade\n\nMeasuring the gains from trade and their distribution is challenging. Recent empirical contributions have addressed this challenge by drawing on rich and newly available sources of microdata to measure changes in household nominal incomes and price indices. While such data have become available for some components of household welfare\, and for some locations and periods\, they are typically not available for the entire consumption basket. In this paper\, we propose and implement an alternative approach that uses rich\, but widely available\, expenditure survey microdata to estimate theory-consistent changes in income-group specific price indices and welfare. Our approach builds on existing work that uses linear Engel curves and changes in expenditure on income-elastic goods to infer unobserved real incomes. A major shortcoming of this approach is that while based on non-homothetic preferences\, the price indices it recovers are homothetic and hence are neither theory consistent nor suitable for distributional analysis when relative prices are changing. To make progress\, we show that we can recover changes in income-specific price indices and welfare from horizontal shifts in Engel curves if preferences are quasi-separable (Gorman\, 1970\; 1976) and we focus on what we term “relative Engel curves”. Our approach is flexible enough to allow for the highly non-linear Engel curves we document in the data\, and for non-parametric estimation at each point of the income distribution. We first implement this approach to estimate changes in cost of living and household welfare using Indian microdata. We then revisit the impacts of India’s trade reforms across regions.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Bob Kramer: At the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Bob Kramer is a master bladesmith\, widely considered to be the greatest American knifesmith working today\, and will share his relentless quest to forge the perfect knife. His love of the knife as functional form famously began when he worked as a cook at Four Seasons Olympic Hotel in Seattle when he was an oceanography student at the University of Washington. Kramer went on to become a graduate of the American Bladesmith Society in Arkansas\, where he received special recognition as a “master bladesmith” in 1997. In 2016\, the Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington state included a handmade blade by Kramer in BAM Biennial\, a juried exhibition focusing on the work of established and emerging artists\, craftspeople\, and designers living and working in the state. Kramer knives are especially known for their fine Damascus steel patterns\, exotic wood handles\, and “heirloom-quality” finishing. Since 2017\, Kramer has been creating handmade knives for auction only from his studio in Olympia\, Washington.\n\nSupported by Design Core Detroit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:High Performance Computing & Data Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Researchers can leverage high performance computing (HPC) to pose and probe unique and interesting questions. In order to answer those questions\, they need some ability to extract meaning from the data they generate. Data science has recently risen to prominence for its abilities not only to extract this meaning\, but also to turn that meaning into actionable\, data-driven predictions. Combining HPC and data science can allow a researcher to more easily ask questions and discover answers leading to even deeper questions. However\, despite these benefits\, it can be difficult for full-time researchers to learn an emerging field with no guidance while still producing research. To reduce this barrier\, the Scientific Computing Student Club (SC2) presents the HPC and Data Science Workshop Series. For eight weeks in the Fall semester\, we will meet once a week to discuss HPC and Data Science topics\, focusing on how elements of HPC and data science can reinforce research and discovery. There will be no one instructor for this workshop\; instead we will have guest speakers from SC2\, ARC-TS\, MICDE\, and even MathWorks (MATLAB). Attendance at all workshops is encouraged\, but not required. Pizza will be provided.
