SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Organic Fiction: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Hava Gurevich’s colorful abstractions feature botanical\, aquatic and microscopic motifs as she explores repeating patterns in nature. Blending images from the real world and her imagination\, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty\, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature\, such as tree branches\, ice patterns\, twisted vines\, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures\, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Presentation:Michigan Neuroimaging Initiative: Thinking About Individual Differences in fMRI: The Role of PCA and Other Latent Space Methods
DESCRIPTION:A major goal for fMRI research is to figure out how people's brains differ in ways relevant to some phenotype of interest (e.g.\, disorder status). But there are serious challenges because the brain has tens of thousands of voxels (or connections) and each is measured with substantial noise. Our aim in this meeting is to introduce a PCA-based method we have developed\, called Brain Basis Set\, for predicting phenotypes of interest. We will also discuss some theoretical reasons why PCA-type methods have advantages over alternatives for individual differences fMRI research.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Nancy Blum\, RC Class of '85
DESCRIPTION:RC alumna '85 Nancy Blum returns to East Quad to exhibit her drawings of flowers and to deliver the 10/19 Robertson Lecture on her public art installations. \n\nExcerpted from her artist statement:\nMy large‐scale works on paper\, rendered in ink\, colored pencil\, gouache and graphite\, portray a fantastic realm in which flowers own the space. I use a variety of 16th and 17th-century botanical images\, from Chinese plum blossoms to German botanicals\, as starting points for each drawing. Rather than alluding to an actual landscape\, I instead combine species of plants in the same drawing that would not customarily exist together in nature. Obsessive handwork creates intricate layers of visual information to be discovered over time and\, in this way\, the works become a seductive meditation for the viewer.\n\nI use botanical motifs to create images that are universally associated with growth and continuity. My deeper intent is to conjure the ‘flower’ as an active\, forceful agent\, subverting a culturally conditioned point of view that often deems the ephemeral and the organic as less powerful and of limited value. My ‘wonderland’ presents a view of life that pulses with expansive fecundity\; hopefully\, it also propels comprehension of the connectedness of all beings within the limitless energy operating throughout this world.\n\nWhen making art for public spaces\, I strive to invest these commissions with similar content\, while bringing beauty and a high level of craft to a particular environment. As I conceive and develop each piece\, I respond to the specifics of the surrounding architecture\, ecosystem\, and community in an effort to compellingly meet the needs of the site. My studio practice\, in turn\, is invigorated by opportunities to design work in relationship to an existing framework\, and the special demands and responsibilities this process entails.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire
DESCRIPTION:Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement\, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse\, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination\; re-writing the canonical accounts of history\; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.\n\nAt a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees\, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists\, designers\, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art\, design\, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.\n\nArtists: Rudolf Baranik\, Stephanie Dinkins\, Emory Douglas\, Brendan Fernandes\, Chitra Ganesh\, Carole Harris\, Maren Hassinger\, Al Loving\, Josh MacPhee\, Native Art Department International\, Michele Oka Doner\, Yoko Ono\, Kameelah Janan Rasheed\, Martha Rosler\, Buster Simpson\, Gregory Sholette\, Leni Sinclair\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Graem Whyte\, and Zafos Xagoraris. \n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Manufacturing Research Seminar Series: Computer Numeric Control (CNC) as a Cloud Service: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nControl as a Service (CaaS) is an emerging paradigm where low-level control of a machine (e.g.\, CNC) is moved from a local computer on the machine to a remote computer in the cloud\, from where it is provided to the machine as an on-demand service over the internet. A machine with access to CaaS can\, therefore\, leverage the vast computational resources available in the cloud to run advanced control algorithms that boost its performance at low cost. CaaS also facilitates easy upgrades to the control system of a machine and enables it to become more “intelligent” by leveraging data sharing and analytics. However\, CaaS raises a critical question of how to safely and reliably perform (hard) real-time control of a machine over unreliable internet connections. The field of Networked Control Systems has studied this problem for decades but has focused heavily on feedback control and stability. Conversely\, CaaS is open to exploiting the immense benefits of feedforward control and techniques used by video streaming services like Netflix to deliver content satisfactorily over the internet. Is it trivial or naïve to control a powerful manufacturing machine with inertia as one would a smart phone streaming a Netflix movie? What about increased exposure to cyber threats? I will share my thoughts on these questions along with some early results gathered on a 3D printer\, and I am curious to hear your thoughts.\n\nBio\nChinedum Okwudire is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and\, starting January 2019\, the Associate Chair for Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) at the University of Michigan. Prior to joining Michigan\, he was the mechatronic systems optimization team leader at DMG Mori USA. His research is focused on exploiting knowledge at the intersection of machine design\, control and\, more-recently\, computer science\, to boost the performance of automation systems at low cost. Chinedum has received a number of awards including the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation\; the Young Investigator Award from the International Symposium on Flexible Automation\; the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers\; the Ralph Teetor Educational Award from SAE International\; the Department Achievement Award from the Mechanical Engineering Department\, University of Michigan\; and the Russell Severance Springer Visiting Professorship from UC Berkeley. He has co-authored a number best paper award winning papers at Precision Engineering and Dynamic Systems and Control Conferences. His recent work on boosting the speed of 3D printers at low cost through feedforward vibration compensation has been featured internationally in popular news media\, including NASA Tech Briefs and Discovery Channel Canada.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Life Magazine 1947 Homecoming Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, just two years after the end of World War II\, the popular weekly news magazine LIFE sent staff photographers Lisa Larsen and Ralph Morse to cover homecoming weekend at the University of Michigan. The subsequent article\, “Michigan Homecoming\,” which brought national attention to UM’s athletic program\, featured a seven-page spread with photographs of the campus during a much-anticipated football game between the number-one ranked Michigan Wolverines and the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. This installation provides a unique opportunity to view twenty-one images of that weekend\, many of which were not published in the original article\, recently donated to UMMA by John and Susan Edwards Harvith. Considered alongside the article\, these photographs of fervent fans\, strolling couples\, alumni making their annual pilgrimage\, and the game itself present LIFE magazine’s view of a giddy post-war public enjoying a return to American pastimes.\n\nThese photographs were recently gifted to UMMA by John (AB '69\, JD '73) and Susan (MMP '73) Harvith.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jun Zhang\, Professor\, Departments of Psychology and Mathematics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Information Geometry is the differential geometric study of the manifold of probability models\, where each probability distribution is just a point on the manifold. Instead of using metric for measuring distances on such manifolds\, these applications often use “divergence functions” for measuring proximity of two points (that do not impose symmetry and triangular inequality)\, for instance Kullback-Leibler divergence\, Bregman divergence\, f-divergence\, etc. Divergence functions are tied to generalized entropy (for instance\, Tsallis entropy\, Renyi entropy\, phi-entropy) and cross-entropy functions widely used in machine learning and information sciences. After a brief introduction to IG\, I illustrate the geometry of maximum entropy inference and exponential family. I then introduce a general form of entropy/cross-entropy/divergence function\, and show how the geometry of the underlying probability manifold (deformed exponential family) reveals an “escort statistics” that is hidden from the standard exponential family.

DESCRIPTION:Bio: John Gosbee\, MD\, MS teaches human factors engineering (HFE) and patient safety at the University of Michigan Departments of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. He leads development of patient safety curriculum for several medical and surgical residencies. He teaches HFE for several BME design courses\, including capstone design courses\, observation course\, and regulatory science. He also provides HFE consultation to UM research projects that involve new device design (e.g.\, teleophthalmology). He has been visiting professor at dozens of universities\, including Penn\, Johns Hopkins\, and Yale University. He has received two national awards for patient safety design (ISMP’s “Cheers Award” and AAMI’s “Career Achievement Award”. Among dozens of other publications\, he edited and co-wrote the book\, Using Human Factors Engineering to Improve Patient Safety. Previously\, Dr Gosbee worked at Department of Veterans Affairs - National Center for Patient Safety\, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University\, and NASA on development of space-based medical facilities.\n\nAbstract: Dr. Gosbee will present the theory and method behind teaching human factors engineering to learners at University of Michigan (and other venues). FDA and the marketplace expect that medical device design process will include human factors engineering (HFE). He will share lessons learned when teaching BME students about HFE\, including usability testing and IEC standards during their capstone design project.\n\nACGME (residency program oversight group) now requires all residency programs will teach analysis of actual safety events to all residents. Many of these safety events involve devices and software - which require application of HFE concepts\, standards\, or methods. He will share lessons of teaching residents about using usability testing to analyze the safety issue (e.g.\, ultrasound machine design) and evaluate proposed redesigns (e.g.\, ECG machine interface).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE285 Undergraduate Seminar Series - Innovation 101: How to Build Revolutionary Technologies
DESCRIPTION:The race to find and develop the next revolutionary technology is ever-accelerating. Everyone claims to have a \"secret innovation sauce\" that gives them an advantage over their competitors. In some cases\, this is just for show\; in other cases\, it actually does foster disruptive innovation. This seminar will examine the pursuit of revolutionary technology development and disruptive innovation\, focusing on the fundamentals of the innovation process and how to create an environment where these ideas will flourish and take off to unprecedented heights. We will also consider the similarities between historically prestigious innovation factories\, like the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works\, and modern high-tech startups - do they follow a similar set of operating principles? How do you foster a culture where team members think vigorously outside the box to invent the impossible? And...what does all of this mean to you\, as students pursuing your dreams?\n \nAbout the Speaker:\n \nBen Marchionna is the Head of Global Field Operations and Engineering at SkySpecs\, a commercial drone startup company in Ann Arbor\, MI.\n\nBefore SkySpecs\, Ben was a senior systems engineer and graduate of the Engineering Leadership Development Program at the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale\, CA\, where he supported advanced R&D projects including sixth-gen fighters\, UAVs\, hypersonic weapon systems\, and other programs that he can't talk about. He has also worked as a flight test engineer for the F-35 program at Edwards AFB\, as a systems engineer for the F-35 in Fort Worth\, TX\, and as an engineering intern on the C-5M Super Galaxy in Marietta\, GA.\n \nBen graduated from the University of Michigan in April 2011 with a BSE in Aerospace Engineering and from the University of Southern California in December 2014 with an MS in Product Development Engineering.\n\nOutside of work\, Ben serves on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) and as the Executive Vice President of the Los Angeles County Air Show. He enjoys traveling\, flying airplanes\, and of course\, Michigan football! Ben lives in Ann Arbor with his wife\, Katie\, 22-month old daughter\, Maisie\, and their American Eskimo Dog\, Norbert.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Patchwork Leviathan: How Pockets of Bureaucratic Governance Flourish within Institutionally Diverse Developing States
DESCRIPTION:Within seemingly weak states\, exceptionally effective subunits lie hidden. These high-performing niches exhibit organizational characteristics distinct from poor-performing peer organizations\, but also distinct from high-functioning organizations in Western countries. This article develops the concept of interstitial bureaucracy to explain how and why unusually high-performing state organizations in developing countries invert canonical features of Weberian bureaucracy. Interstices are distinct-yet-embedded subsystems characterized by practices inconsistent with those of the dominant institution. This interstitial position poses particular challenges and requires unique solutions. Interstices cluster together scarce proto-bureaucratic resources to cultivate durable distinction from the status quo\, while managing disruptions arising from interdependencies with the wider neopatrimonial field. I propose a framework for how bureaucratic interstices respond to those challenges\, generalizing from organizational comparisons within the Ghanaian state and abbreviated historical comparison cases from the nineteenth-century United States\, early-twentieth-century China\, mid-twentieth-century Kenya\, and early-twenty-first-century Nigeria.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:My Butch Career: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Join LGQRI in celebrating Esther Newton’s forthcoming memoir. \n\nDuring her difficult childhood\, Esther Newton recalls that she “became an anti-girl\, a girl refusenik\, caught between genders\,” and that her “child body was a strong and capable instrument stuffed into the word ‘girl.’” Later\, in early adulthood\, as she was on her way to becoming a trailblazing figure in gay and lesbian studies\, she “had already chosen higher education over the strongest passion in my life\, my love for women\, because the two seemed incompatible.”\n\nIn her new memoir\, Newton tells the compelling\, disarming\, and at times sexy story of her struggle to write\, teach\, and find love\, all while coming to terms with her identity during a particularly intense time of homophobic persecution in the twentieth century.\n\nAffecting and immediate\, \"My Butch Career\" is a story of a gender outlaw in the making\, an invaluable account of a beloved and influential figure in LGBT history\, and a powerful reminder of only how recently it has been possible to be an openly queer academic.\n\nSPEAKER BIO: \nEsther Newton\, one of the pioneers of gay and lesbian studies\, is formerly Term Professor of Women's Studies at the University of Michigan and Professor of Anthropology at Purchase College\, State University of New York. She is the author of several books\, including \"Margaret Mead Made Me Gay: Personal Essays\, Public Ideas\" and \"Cherry Grove\, Fire Island: Sixty Years in America's First Gay and Lesbian Town\,\" both published by Duke University Press\, as well as the groundbreaking \"Mother Camp: Female Impersonators in America.\"\n\nEvent Accessibility: \nRamp and elevator access at the E. SUMMARY:Presentation:On Taking Tests as a Learning Activity: Comprehension\, Concept Maps\, and Multiple Choice Quizzes
DESCRIPTION:The impact of retrieval practice\, its underlying mechanisms\, and the boundary conditions on its effective deployment have become topics of high interest in both basic and applied studies of academically-relevant learning. Results from a collaboration involving laboratory data collection at Michigan State University and Kalamazoo College and classroom data collection at Albion College show (a) comprehension of studied material is needed to gain the full benefits of retrieval practice on subsequent remembering\, (b) when classroom topics are more difficult making comprehension a greater challenge\, concept mapping becomes more effective than other retrieval-practice tools at producing potentially transferrable knowledge\, but (c) better remembering does not in and of itself guarantee better transfer and application — you’ve got to remember the right material at the right time and realize its relevance.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Unsustainable Pharmaceutical Prices and Potential Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The annual U.S. market for prescription drugs is more than $500 billion\, representing almost 17% of all health care expenditures\, and it is rising at an unsustainable rate. In 2017\, the average American spent $1\,100 per year on medications. It is\, therefore\, no wonder that the public and elected officials are fixated on understanding the factors leading to high prices and forging workable policy solutions. Dr. Sean Sullivan\, a health economist and expert on drug pricing\, will discuss the many reasons why prescription drugs cost so much in the US and the options to address the problem.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: An Organic Geochemical Perspective on Peatlands and Paleoclimate
DESCRIPTION:Peat deposits are important archives that can be used to reconstruct continental paleoenvironmental histories. Although they cover only 3% of the global land area\, they store 30% of global soil organic carbon. They constitute an accumulation of the remains of mosses and vascular plants that have lived and died in marshy settings. The moist environments encourage growth of the plants and retard decomposition of their remains to produce thick accumulations of organic-rich material that can be studied for high resolution paleoenvironmental reconstructions. The plant remains are deposited where the plants lived and hence provide location-specific evidence of past environmental conditions. Today’s presentation will summarize the climate sensitivity of peat deposition\, illustrate applications of a few organic geochemical proxies to peat paleoclimate reconstructions\, and ponder the place of peatlands in glacial-interglacial changes in the global carbon cycle.

SUMMARY:Other:Innovative Strategies for Nonconventional Water Splitting and Beyond
DESCRIPTION: One of the challenges to realize large-scale H2 production from water electrolysis is the lack of competent and inexpensive electrocatalysts. Our group recently discovered that surface modification of metallic nickel with nitrogen resulted in a superior electrocatalyst for H2 evolution under neutral condition\, rivaling the performance of the state-of-the-art platinum-based catalysts. In addition\, since water oxidation is more kinetically challenging while its product O2 is not of significant value\, we are also interested in exploring alternative oxidation reactions which can not only provide electrons for H2 evolution at the cathode but also yield value-added organic products at the anode. Within this context\, biomass-derived intermediate compounds are found to be suitable candidates for electrocatalytic upgrading\, which can be integrated with H2 production under alkaline conditions. Finally\, a new electrolyzer design for decoupled water splitting and organic transformation will be presented\, which is able to substantially reduce voltage inputs and mitigate the H2/O2 mixing issue commonly encountered in conventional water electrolysis. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nYujie Sun (University of Cincinnati)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Seminar Titles: \"Quantitative analysis of the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC)\"\, Chu Chen and \"Pattern Formation in 2D Tissues via Mechanics: From Juvenile Zebrafish to Human Embryonic Stem Cells\"\, Hayden Nunley
DESCRIPTION:Abstracts: \nChu Chen - In mammalian cells\, accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis requires that kinetochores of sister chromatids attach to microtubules emanating from opposite spindle poles. In the absence of kinetochore-microtubule attachment\, the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) is activated to delay anaphase onset. Over the past two decades\, researchers have basically revealed the fundamental biochemical pathway of SAC signaling. However\, how SAC effectively halts mitosis progression in the presence of very few unattached kinetochores is less addressed. In this talk\, quantitative evidence will be presented which suggest the presence of synergistic actions in SAC. Hypothesis about the underlying mechanism and preliminary data from ongoing validation experiments will also be discussed. This cooperativity may enable a single unattached kinetochore to produce a strong enough signal.- \n\nand \n\nHayden Nunley - Many epithelial tissues are composed of several types of cells with distinct functions. For proper functioning of the tissues\, it is often important that the different types of cells form a spatial pattern. The specific biological details of how the cells interact to form these patterns are often not fully understood. To study the developmental processes in the absence of detailed biological information\, it is useful to test which simplified physical models are consistent with experimental observations. With insights from these models\, we identify specific candidate proteins or cellular structures necessary for the interaction\, and generate predictions of how specific manipulations will affect tissue patterning. In this spirit\, we will discuss the formation of a crystal of cone photoreceptors in juvenile zebrafish retinae. We find that the structure and arrangement of defects in the tissue are consistent with a purely mechanical model in which cones of one specific type interact with other cones of the same type at short range. We identify a specific cellular structure as a candidate for mediating this interaction. We will also discuss neural fate specification in human embryonic stem cell colonies. To study this pattern which has a length scale that does not scale with colony size\, we propose a model in which cells respond to mechanical stresses by altering their contractility.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Two-Step Estimation and Inference with Possibly Many Included Covariates
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We study the implications of including many covariates in a first-step estimate entering a two-step estimation procedure. We find that a first order bias emerges when the number of included covariates is “large” relative to the square-root of sample size\, rendering standard inference procedures invalid. We show that the jackknife is able to estimate this “many covariates” bias consistently\, thereby delivering a new automatic bias-corrected two-step point estimator. The jackknife also consistently estimates the standard error of the original two-step point estimator. For inference\, we develop a valid post-bias-correction bootstrap approximation that accounts for the additional variability introduced by the jackknife biascorrection. We find that the jackknife bias-corrected point estimator and the bootstrap postbias-correction inference perform excellent in simulations\, offering important improvements over conventional two-step point estimators and inference procedures\, which are not robust to including many covariates. We apply our results to an array of distinct treatment effect\, policy evaluation\, and other applied microeconomics settings. In particular\, we discuss production function and marginal treatment effect estimation in detail.\n\nBio: Matias D. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Día de los Muertos Ball
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: LAMBDA THETA ALPHA LATIN SORORITY\, INC.\, BETA OMICRON CHAPTER\n\nDía de los Muertos\, or Day of the Dead\, is a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico that commemorates the lives of those who have passed. It involves family and friends gathering together to pray for and celebrate the lives of their friends and family members. Traditionally\, entire communities gather together to celebrate and create “altares” dedicated to their loved ones. These altars have decorations such as colorful paper\, marigolds\, candy\, and the favorite food or beverages of the person who the altar is dedicated to.\n\nHistory of Lambda Theta Alpha\nLambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority\, Inc. (LTA) was founded in December of 1975 at Kean University in Union\, New Jersey as the first Latina sorority ever created to cater towards the needs of Latinas in higher education. As the Latino migration to the United States increased\, so did the emergence of independent Latina women. With this growth\, the need for support groups and outreach programs were at an all-time high\; this was true for all women and especially for the low percentage of Latina women in higher education. The sorority’s focus is not only to support all women on a college campus but to integrate the organization into the social\, political\, and community service arena that other members of the Ann Arbor community are involved with. On January 23\, 2000\, eight Lovely Ladies promoted these values on the University of Michigan campus with the founding of Beta Omicron chapter. This allowed not only independent Latina women\, but all Universal Women on campus to feel a sense of belonging and with that\, achieve their highest potential. It would define a new role for the Universal woman—one with education\, goals and vision in hopes of great success. Through educational and charitable activities\, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority\, Inc. strives to accomplish these aspirations.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jeremy Kittel's Kittel & Co.
DESCRIPTION:Previously of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet\, Jeremy Kittel has been a composer-arranger-collaborator for such diverse artists as My Morning Jacket\, Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble\, and Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn. He blazes through a Bach violin partita as easily as a Scottish reel\, bringing the same intense focus and precision to both. For the last few years the Michigan native\, now based in Brooklyn\, has been diligently building his own repertoire of music for a wholly original new group.\n\nThis Kittel and Co. show features mandolin phenom Josh Pinkham (named “the future of the mandolin” by Mandolin Magazine)\, guitarist Quinn Bachand (who's toured with fiddling icons Ashley MacIsaac and Natalie MacMaster)\, and hammer-dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman (acclaimed for bringing a new tonal flexibility to the instrument).\n\nKittel & Co’s highly anticipated new album Whorls was just released June 29.
