SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. Earlier this year\, Ghost Pony Press released Cope’s eighth poetry collection: The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems.\n\nOn view during Special Collections Research Center hours: Monday-Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Deluge
DESCRIPTION:Five Channel Video Installation\n13 Minutes\, 27 Seconds.\n\nDeluge is a culmination of Mendel’s ten years of work on the Drowning World project\, shooting video and stills in thirteen different countries. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Each location added has intensified the narrative impact of the endeavour.\n\nDrowning World now consists of four parallel and connected narrative elements: Submerged Portraits\, Flood Lines\, Watermarks\, and Deluge.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:U.S. Office of Financial Research and the University of Michigan Center on Finance\, Law\, and Policy's Fourth Annual Financial Stability Conference\, \"Functions and Firms: Using Activity and Entity-based Regulation to Strengthen the Financial System\"
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, D.C. - FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams will keynote the fourth annual financial stability conference hosted by the U.S. Office of Financial Research and the University of Michigan Center on Finance\, Law\, and Policy. The event\, “Functions and Firms: Using Activity and Entity-based Regulation to Strengthen the Financial System\,” will take place November 15-16 in the Treasury Department’s historic Cash Room in Washington\, D.C.\n \nMcWilliams\, the 21st Chairman of the FDIC\, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 24\, 2018 to serve a six-year term on the FDIC Board of Directors\, and designated as Chairman for a term of five years.\n\nIn addition to McWilliams\, dozens of other regulators\, leading scholars\, and distinguished practitioners will grapple with questions such as:\nHow should our existing regulatory structure be applied to support an activities-based approach? \nWhat is the role of firm-based regulation?\nDo regulators have the data they need to promote financial stability?\nWhat can we learn from financial regulators outside the United States?\nWhat are the emergent (risky) properties of the financial system\, and how might activities-based macroprudential regulation address them?\nWhere are our blind spots and gaps?\n\nConference admission is free\, but registration is required. Co-hosted by: U. S. Office of Financial Research and the University of Michigan Center on Finance\, Law\, and Policy with support provided by the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

SUMMARY:Presentation:NAME Prospectus Presentation for Kauhua Zhang
DESCRIPTION:Kaihua Zhang will have his prospectus presentation “ Developing and Experimentally Validating of Dynamic Bayesian Network for System Reliability Prediction ”\, Thursday\, 11/15/2018 at 9:30 am in the Conference Room (232). \n\nCommittee Members:\nMatthew Collette (Chair)\nAllison John (Cognate)\nPingsha Dong\nDavid Singer\nKevin Maki\n\nVessels and marine structures are subjected to degradation during their service\, jeopardizing structural safety and shortening their service life. Numerical models of such structural systems are developed and relied on to simulate and ensure the systemintegrity. Such numerical models are the essential part of digital twins representing complex marine structures and providing enhanced forecasts of risk and lifecycle performance. Digital twins also require data fusion from observations or experiments to improve the numerical model agreements with the real-world structure. Due to the\ninfeasible of full-scale testing of marine structures\, scale experiments are developed but few of them reflect many of the properties of large and complex marine structures.Thus\, an experiment must be designed to mimic the multiple degradation process and retain structural redundancy so that a single element failure will not remove all load carrying capacity. Dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) can model the degradation process of structure but its performance has not been validated by experiments. Therefore\, the proposed designs an experiment to mimic the properties of marine structure and develops a corresponding numerical model whose performance is validated by the designed experiment. To mimic the interdependence\, redundancy and component-to-system level\nperformance of marine structures in degradation\, a hexagon tension specimen with four propagating fatigue cracks\, one on each corner\, is designed and tested. The applied loading cycles and corresponding crack lengths are recorded as the major time-varying data of degradation state. Two methods of measuring crack length are developed based on computer vision and digital image correlation. To complement the test specimen\, a DBN is constructed to predict the crack length and system reliability with observation input. The network models the time-varying process with sequential slices. The dependence among components are controlled by hyperparameters and are integrated into complex system behavior to reflect the structure from the component level to the\nsystem level. The performance of the DBN is tested and validated by the data gathered from the experiment of hexagon specimen.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:THE REAL IMMIGRATION DEBATE: WHOM TO LET IN AND WHY
DESCRIPTION:Mark Krikorian\, a nationally recognized expert on immigration issues\, has served as Excutive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) since 1995. The Center\, an independent\, non-partisan research organization in Washington\, D.C.\, examines and critiques the impact of immigration on the United States. His knowledge and expertise in the immigration field are sought by Congress\, where he has frequently testified\, as well as the mainstream and new media. Mr. Krikorian has published articles in numerous outlets and his most recent publication is Open Immigration: Yea & Nay\, co-authored with Alex Nowrasteh of the Cato Institute.\n\nThe immigration debate in the U.S. has been contentious for decades. Most focus has been on enforcement issues. Although important\, they are less fundamental than a question that too often goes unaddressed: Why limit immigration at all? Almost everyone at least pays lip service to the need for limits of some kind\, but we don’t often enough challenge each other to explain what limits we support and why. If we are ever to have a rational debate about immigration\, the starting point has to be a candid acknowledgment of our goals and preferences.\n\nThis is the fourth in a series of six weekly lectures. The subject is immigration. The next lecture will be on November 29. The title is LOOKING BEYOND COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM: A NEW IMMIGRATION POLITICS.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Borders: Global Africa
DESCRIPTION:More than ever in the era of globalization\, ideas traverse geographic\, generational\, and cultural boundaries\, even as national borders seem to be closing. 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' reflects on this moment by considering how Africa and its artists have been at the center of complex histories of encounter and exchange for centuries. Bringing together a dazzling array of works made in Africa\, Europe\, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century\, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and the African diaspora. It also explores issues such as slavery\, colonization\, migration\, racism\, and identity at play in the objects and their histories. Highlights include paintings\, photographs\, sculpture\, and installations by Kudzanai Chiurai\, Omar Victor Diop\, Wangechi Mutu\, and Serge Alain Nitegeka. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated publication\, the tenth in the UMMA Books series.\n\nLead support for 'Beyond Borders: Global Africa' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Office of Research\, African Studies Center\, and Department of Afroamerican and African Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and Susan Ullrich.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire
DESCRIPTION:Have We Met: Dialogues on Memory and Desire draws inspiration from Ann Arbor’s legacy of social movements (Anti-War Movement\, Civil Rights Movements) and experimental art practices (The Once Group) from the late-1950s to the 1970s as its point of departure. It brings together archival materials and reproductions from the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection and the Bentley Library in conjunction with radical artworks by diverse\, multi-generational artists and designers whose works are deeply influenced by the ideas of freedom and self-determination\; re-writing the canonical accounts of history\; and building contemporary culture and solidarity through collective action.\n\nAt a time when the idea of citizenship in the United States is being deeply challenged and redefined through horrific occurrences of gun violence and police brutality towards racialized and queer civilians and refugees\, this exhibition asks what role art institutions can play in building inclusive and vibrant creative spaces the 21st Century. Have We Met? Dialogues on Memory and Desire retraces and learns from models of collectivity and organizing mobilized by artists\, designers\, and cultural producers in the past and present as a lens to understand the contemporary moment and re-imagine the future.  It explores the complex relationships and at times overlapping and contested concerns between contemporary art\, design\, and social justice that continually influence and inform one another.\n\nArtists: Rudolf Baranik\, Stephanie Dinkins\, Emory Douglas\, Brendan Fernandes\, Chitra Ganesh\, Carole Harris\, Maren Hassinger\, Al Loving\, Josh MacPhee\, Native Art Department International\, Michele Oka Doner\, Yoko Ono\, Kameelah Janan Rasheed\, Martha Rosler\, Buster Simpson\, Gregory Sholette\, Leni Sinclair\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Graem Whyte\, and Zafos Xagoraris. \n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic History\, International Economics: Spillover Effects of IP Protection in the Inter-war Aircraft Industry
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nCan granting IP protection to one good affect the innovation rate in other related goods? To answer this question we exploit a unique policy experiment in the inter-war military aircraft industry. Airframe designs had little IP protection before 1926\, but changes passed by Congress in 1926 provided airframe manufacturers with enhanced property rights over the new designs they produced. We show that granting property rights to airframe producers increased innovation in airframes\, but slowed down innovation in aero-engines\, a complementary good where there was no change in the availability of IP protection. We propose and test a simple theory that explains these patterns.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Deep Dive into Digital and Data Methods for Chinese Studies
DESCRIPTION:Light lunch will be provided. Free and Open to the Public.\n\nThe recent rise of medical history as an analytical lens to study the history of early religions raises new questions: What is medicine? In what sources can we find it?\n\nThis presentation introduces a case study of how to adapt digital tools to study medicine and religion in China\, focusing on the distribution of drug terms in religious and medical sources from the Six Dynasties (220-589). After constructing a text database and attaching bibliographic data about the texts\, Docusky can track the distribution of large term sets (I collected 12\,000 drug names) according to time\, space\, sect and genre. This facilitates entirely new kinds of historical argument. I will demonstrate three examples\, showing 1) new evidence of Buddhist transmission of medicine to China and the new historical questions it leads to\, 2) how to use the toolset to make context-discovery of unknown sources\, and 3) using geographic data of materia medica to argue for regional origins of primary sources. The paper further considers the philological violence done to primary sources when working in digital media.\n\nDr. Michael Stanley-Baker 徐源 is assistant professor in History and at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. He researches medicine and religion in early medieval and contemporary China. He developed tools for the study of religion and medicine in China with National Taiwan University and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science\, Berlin\, and is now developing them for the study of multi-lingual primary sources for medical history across the classical world. He also serves as Vice-President of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (IASTAM). More information is available at https://michaelstanley-baker.com/digital-humanities/\n\nThe “Deep Dive” series is co-sponsored by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) and the Asia Library\, and is co-directed by Mary Gallagher (Professor of Political Science and Director of LRCCS) and Liangyu Fu (Chinese Studies Librarian\, Asia Library). Question about the series? Please email Liangyu Fu at liangyuf@umich.edu .

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CEW+Inspire Workshop Series – Gender Revolution in the Trump Era: Transformations in Consciousness and Gender Relations
DESCRIPTION:Explore the rapid transformation in gender consciousness and gender relations during this workshop with Dr. Pamela Aronson. Attendees will discuss changes stemming from three primary sources: the rise of women running for political office in 2018\, the emergence of new social movement activism\, and the creation of the “#MeToo” movement\, which has sparked a new public discourse on sexual assault and harassment. While exploring the ways that this new consciousness has also faced backlash and opposition\, this workshop will shed light on the emerging gender revolution by examining how rapid transformations are influencing everyday relationships between men and women. A hands-on wellness activity will be presented by the CEW+ Inspire team to complement this workshop. The discussion will be followed by a networking reception.\n\nFree and open to the public. Please register by November 8th. \n\nAbout the Presenter: Pamela Aronson is Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Her research examines how inequalities impact identities and the life course. Past research has considered young women’s transition to adulthood\, perception of role models\, work and family orientations\, and attitudes toward feminism. She also studies class and gender differences in the experience of postsecondary education and career development. Gender and feminist consciousness\, as well as the impact of internalized misogyny in electoral politics\, are the focus of her new research project.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ChE Seminar Series: William A. Tisdale
DESCRIPTION:Department of Chemical Engineering\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\n\nABSTRACT\n\nStructure\, surface chemistry\, and energetic disorder can dramatically affect excited state dynamics in low-dimensional systems. Using a combination of ultrafast laser spectroscopy\, time-resolved optical microscopy\, and kinetic modeling\, I will show how these effects manifest in assemblies of colloidal quantum dots (QD) and atomically thin 2D semiconductors\, which are promising components of next-generation photovoltaic and lighting technologies. In particular\, I will demonstrate the counterintuitive role of entropy in the nonequilibrium population dynamics of excitons and charge carriers in nanoscale systems\, and how these dynamics are influenced by the surface and structural organizational of these nanomaterials.\n\nBIO\n\nWill Tisdale joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT in January\, 2012\, where he holds the rank of Associate Professor and is currently the ARCO Career Development Professor in Energy Studies. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 2005\, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2010\, and was a postdoc in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT before joining the faculty in 2012. Will is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)\, the DOE Early Career Award\, the NSF CAREER Award\, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship\, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award\, the AIChE Nanoscale Science & Engineering Forum Young Investigator Award\, and MIT’s Everett Moore Baker Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE 585 Graduate Seminar Series - Autonomous In-Space Assembly: Recent Advances and Future Applications
DESCRIPTION:Erik Komendera\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\, Mechanical Engineering\nDirector\, Autonomous Field and Space Robotics Laboratory\nVirginia Polytechnic Institute and State University\n\nWith the retirement of the Space Shuttle program\, the option to lift heavy payloads to orbit has become severely constrained. Industry has responded with low cost\, small-lift launch vehicles. This has led to significant interest in constructing large space telescopes\, orbital platforms\, and habitats in place. The advent of robotic in-space assembly will mitigate the need for deployment mechanisms and enable assembly using multiple launch vehicles. This will lead to simplified architectures\, interchangeable parts\, and risk reduction. Mission concepts previously considered impossible will become feasible. Robotic assembly will be less risky and costly than assembly by astronauts\, but outside of low-Earth orbit\, these systems must be autonomous. Challenges in autonomous assembly include reasoning with uncertainties in the structure\, agents\, and environment\; delegating a large variety of assembly tasks between heterogeneous robots\; and making error corrections and adjustments as needed. In recent years\, Dr. Komendera and NASA have developed methods to improve the practicality and reliability of assembly by: distributing tasks between specialized agents\, employing optimal state estimation in the assembly workspace\, using error-minimizing sequencing algorithms\, and detecting and correcting failures. In this seminar\, Dr. Komendera will describe these methods\, the results of multiple recent robotic assembly experiments\, and future applications.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Erik Komendera is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech\, and director of the Autonomous Field and Space Robotics Laboratory. His research focuses on autonomous multi-agent construction on Earth\, on orbit\, and on the surfaces of other worlds\, with an emphasis on robust algorithms to detect\, classify\, and repair failures during and after the assembly process. His current projects include a collaboration with NASA to develop robots and algorithms for constructing lunar habitats and on-orbit persistent platforms. He also works with industry to improve methods for autonomous assembly of variable components. He is also a member of the in-Space Assembled Telescope (iSAT) study team that will recommend an approach to assembling a space telescope. From 2014-2018\, Dr. Komendera was a robotics researcher at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton\, VA. He earned his MS ('12) and PhD ('14) in Computer Science from the University of Colorado\, and a BSE in Aerospace Engineering ('07) from the University of Michigan. At NASA\, he served as assembly robot task lead on the project titled “Commercial Infrastructure for Robotic Assembly and Servicing” (CIRAS). In addition\, he was the Principal Investigator for a Langley IRAD project to investigate methods for assembling solar arrays.ck

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Semimetals Unlimited: Unbounded Electrical and Thermal Transport Properties in Three-dimensional Nodal Semimetals
DESCRIPTION:Modern electronics is built on semiconductors\, whose utility comes from their ability to operate on either side of the conductor-insulator dichotomy. For practical applications\, however\, semiconductors face certain unavoidable limitations imposed by the physics of Anderson localization and by the disorder introduced through doping. In this talk I discuss whether these same limitations apply to nodal semimetals\, which are a novel class of three-dimensional materials that have a vanishing density of states (like insulators) but no gap to electron-hole excitations (like conductors). I show that\, surprisingly\, in a certain class of nodal semimetals the electronic mobility can far exceed the bounds that constrain doped semiconductors\, becoming divergingly large even with a finite concentration of charged impurities. I then discuss the thermoelectric effect in semimetals\, and show that their electron-hole symmetry allows for a thermopower that grows without bound under the application of a strong magnetic field. This large thermopower apparently enables the development of devices with record-large thermoelectric figure of merit.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development Seminar: Measurement of intergenerational mobility in developing countries\, with evidence from India.
DESCRIPTION:Estimating intergenerational mobility in developing countries is difficult because matched parent-child income records are rarely available and education is measured very coarsely. In particular\, there are no established methods for comparing educational mobility for subsamples of the population when the education distribution is changing over time. We resolve these problems using new methods in partial identification and new administrative data\, and study intergenerational mobility across groups and across space in India. Intergenerational mobility for the population as a whole has remained constant since liberalization\, but cross-group changes have been substantial. Rising mobility among historically marginalized Scheduled Castes is almost exactly offset by declining intergenerational mobility among Muslims\, a comparably sized group that has few constitutional protections. These findings contest the conventional wisdom that marginalized groups in India have been catching up on average. We also explore heterogeneity across space\, generating the first high-resolution geographic measures of intergenerational mobility across India\, with results across 5600 rural subdistricts and 2300 cities and towns. On average\, children are most successful at exiting the bottom of the distribution in places that are southern\, urban\, or have higher average education levels.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: The dimensions of fear: from brains to ecosystems to human mental health and human impacts
DESCRIPTION:Predators kill prey thereby affecting populations and ecosystems. Predators also scare prey\, and the fear of being killed is a powerful evolutionary force that has always shaped all life on earth. But whether fear can be powerful enough to operate over ecological time in wildlife is intensely debated because demonstrating that fear effects exist for wildlife requires manipulations which are challenging to do for free-living animals. We have been conducting a variety of manipulations on a wide range of wildlife\, from birds to lions\, in many different places in the world that are demonstrating that fear affects wildlife from the brain\, to behaviour and physiology\, to populations\, with cascading effects down the food chain. Our research further reveals that fear of predators can inform us about human mental health and can be used as a tool to diagnose the extent of human impacts on the environment as well.

SUMMARY:Other:Hydrocarbon Functionalization in Porous Materials
DESCRIPTION: Hydrocarbons are cheap and abundant feedstocks readily derived from both fossil fuels and emerging renewable resources. Despite their abundance\, hydrocarbons have limited applications in chemical synthesis due to the inertness of C–H bonds towards both homolytic and heterolytic bond cleavage. I will share two very different approaches to the selective functionalization of simple hydrocarbons that address these challenges. First\, I will highlight a bio-inspired approach to achieve selective alkane hydroxylation using iron-based metal–organic frameworks. The critical influence of both primary and secondary coordination sphere elements on catalyst reactivity\, selectivity\, and stability will be detailed. Second\, I will describe the identification and characterization of a simple heterogeneous base catalyst that converts aromatic hydrocarbons\, CO2\, and methanol into the corresponding aromatic esters at elevated temperatures. The transformation occurs via a two-step\, semi-continuous cycle\, and represents the first hydrocarbon CO2 insertion process that does not consume any energy-intensive stoichiometric reagents. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nDianne Xiao\, PhD (Stanford University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. Living in a Liminal Age: Cairo’s al-Darb al-Ahmar District Enters the Early Modern
DESCRIPTION:Early modern Cairo was crowded urban environment replete with centuries of architectural models from which to draw. Both builders and inhabitants of its neighborhoods engaged with Cairo’s past while simultaneously encountering the incremental transformations associated with the early modern. Interactions with the city from public demonstrations of state power to buying and selling modest private residences were enmeshed with a sense of place. A sustaining local identity was manifest in shops and mosques and homes made of mudbrick and finely dressed Muqattam limestone that grounded Cairo and Cairenes even as the world changed. \n \nShauna Huffaker is an urban historian at the University of Windsor in Ontario who studies the medieval and early modern Middle East. She will be speaking on the lived experiences of the builders of Cairo’s historic al-Darb al-Ahmar district and its early modern inhabitants and the documents that make their lives visible to us. \n\nThis event is organized by the Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS) with support from the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) and the Department of Architecture.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to IslamicStudies@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:High Performance Computing & Data Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Researchers can leverage high performance computing (HPC) to pose and probe unique and interesting questions. In order to answer those questions\, they need some ability to extract meaning from the data they generate. Data science has recently risen to prominence for its abilities not only to extract this meaning\, but also to turn that meaning into actionable\, data-driven predictions. Combining HPC and data science can allow a researcher to more easily ask questions and discover answers leading to even deeper questions. However\, despite these benefits\, it can be difficult for full-time researchers to learn an emerging field with no guidance while still producing research. To reduce this barrier\, the Scientific Computing Student Club (SC2) presents the HPC and Data Science Workshop Series. For eight weeks in the Fall semester\, we will meet once a week to discuss HPC and Data Science topics\, focusing on how elements of HPC and data science can reinforce research and discovery. There will be no one instructor for this workshop\; instead we will have guest speakers from SC2\, ARC-TS\, MICDE\, and even MathWorks (MATLAB). Attendance at all workshops is encouraged\, but not required. Pizza will be provided.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MAS Lecture | Projectile Points From the US Southwest: Who Learns from Whom\, and Why Does It Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological evidence suggests conflict among groups living in southeastern New Mexico ca. AD 1300\, perhaps as a result of competition over dwindling bison populations. Projectile points from sites in the region are highly standardized during this time\, which might reflect a heightened sense of group membership—\"we are US\, they are THEM\"—in the face of social tensions. In this talk\, I explore this hypothesis and some alternatives\, and also\, more generally\, how who we learn skills from might affect technological change through time.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Raven Garvey studies the influences of ecological\, demographic\, and social factors on prehistoric hunter-gatherers’ behaviors and broader cultural change through time. Her current field projects in Patagonia use simple economic models incorporating these factors to generate predictions of hunter-gatherer settlement and resource use at different times in the past. Her current lab-based projects are designed to test and develop models of cultural transmission and technological evolution\, and to refine Patagonian chronologies using obsidian hydration.\n\nThis lecture is sponsored by the Michigan Archaeological Society.\nTo learn more about the MAS\, please visit http://www.miarch.org/\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this lecture\, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Front Country
DESCRIPTION:An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation\, Front Country was unlikely to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco’s Mission District and rehearsing across the bay in Oakland\, they fashioned their own take on roots music and Indie Folk\, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. A guitarist trained in rock and world music. A bassist equally versed in jazz and newgrass. A violinist with technique that could seamlessly hop between honky tonk and electropop. And a female lead singer with grit and soul that was also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. In a wood-paneled country dive bar in the shadow of the San Francisco skyline\, Front Country forged a sound hell bent on merging the musical past with the future. The result lies somewhere between Indie Folk and Americana\, in a nether-region they've come to embrace as their own.
