As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects; bilingualism in Egypt; books read by the Egyptian monks; and the works of Shenoute the Great, the most important author of Coptic literature.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the G\u00f6ttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. It depicts a variety of individual stories, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\r\n\r\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\r\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980\u2019s and identified strongly as a \u2018struggle photographer\u2019. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid, HIV\/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\r\n\r\nA leading contemporary photographer, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\r\n\r\nHis on-going project \u2018Drowning World, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\r\n\r\nThe work began in 2007, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events, and the shared experiences of those affected.\r\n\r\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008), Pakistan (2010), Australia (2011), Thailand (2011), Nigeria (2012), Germany (2013), The Philippines (2013), The UK (2014), India (2014), Brazil (2015), Bangladesh (2015), the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\r\n\r\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. In this talk, I will present the following: types and rates of adversity experienced, rates of specific forms of psychopathology, longitudinal correlates of specific forms of childhood adversity on adolescent brain development, and possible social as well as neurobiological pathways to resilience. \r\n\r\n \r\nBio\r\nChris is a Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. He is also a Research Professor in the Survey Research Center at ISR and the Center for Human Growth and Development. Chris received his PhD in Child Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota. He then went on to the NIMH Intramural Research Program where he was a postdoc and later a fellow. His research program involves two active and related lines of research. In the first line, he is examining how poverty-related stressors and the developmental timing of those stressors impact brain development, stress hormone regulation and anxiety as well as depression symptoms during adolescence. In addition to chronic widespread pain, many patients have increased sensitivity to multiple sensory stimuli (e.g. sound, odor, and light) suggesting a global dysfunction in sensory processing. However, the CNS alterations associated with sensory hypersensitivity in chronic pain patients remain largely unknown. The prospective goal of my research is to identify network mechanisms that contribute to sensory hypersensitivity in chronic pain patients. Combining quantitative sensory testing, neuroimaging and computational data analysis methods, I will measure functional connectivity and network architecture at rest and during presentation of aversive stimuli in patients and healthy participants. These analyses aim to provide novel insight into how multiple brain regions interact and contribute to pain and sensory hypersensitivity. Narrative identity is the internalized and evolving story of the self that explains how a person has come to be the unique person he or she is becoming. \r\n\r\nIn this talk, McAdams will describe recent psychological research on narrative identity, with an emphasis on stories of personal redemption (triumphing over adversity and suffering) and their strong connections to mental health, psychological well-being, and positive societal engagement. \r\n\r\nIn various forms such as narratives of upward mobility, atonement, recovery, and personal liberation, the redemptive life stories told by American men and women today, especially in their midlife years, reprise important cultural ideals that have traditionally been associated with living a good life in America. \r\n\r\nAbout McAdams:\r\nDan P. McAdams is the Henry Wade Rogers Professor of Psychology and Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. Author of nearly 300 scientific articles and chapters, numerous edited volumes, and seven books, McAdams works in the areas of personality and life-span developmental psychology. His theoretical and empirical writings focus on concepts of self and identity in contemporary American society and on themes of power, intimacy, redemption, and generativity across the adult life course. \r\n\r\nMcAdams is the author most recently of The Art and Science of Personality Development and The Redemptive Self: Stories Americans Live By. He also wrote a psychological biography entitled George W. Bush and the Redemptive Dream: A Psychological Portrait. In 2016, The Atlantic commissioned him to write an extended psychological essay on the life and mind of Donald J. In this talk, we propose a distributionally robust nurse staffing (DRNS) model that considers both exogenous and endogenous uncertainties. We derive a decomposition algorithm to solve this model. In addition, we identify several float pool structures that often arise in practice and allow us to reformulate the DRNS model as a monolithic mixed-integer linear program, which facilitates off-the-shelf commercial solvers. Furthermore, we optimize the float pool design to reduce the cross-training while achieving a specified target staffing costs. The numerical case studies, based on the data of a collaborating hospital, lead to recommendations for the float pool design from an operational perspective.\r\n\r\nRuiwei Jiang is an Assistant Professor of Industrial & Operations Engineering in the University of Michigan. He conducts research on the theory of stochastic and robust optimization, integer programming, and their applications on power systems and healthcare operations.
