One thread in this body of work looks for ways of centering African photographers and filmmakers as creators of new styles, looks, and subjectivities. Another thread looks at the artistic environments that Africans created, at the ways in which images (both still and filmic) shaped religious sentiments and formed communities. A third thread looks at what is termed vernacular photography in distinct African locations, focusing on the materiality and mobility of images. A fourth thread looks at processes of archival preservation, collection and digitization as well as creative acts of recuperation, that is, newly curated exhibits of old things\u2014both photographs and films. A final thread explores how Africans engaged, appropriated, synthesized, interpreted filmic and photographic practices from beyond Africa. \r\n \r\nThis workshop will bring together a range of scholars working on these and other contemporary issues in the field of African visual cultures. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects; bilingualism in Egypt; books read by the Egyptian monks; and the works of Shenoute the Great, the most important author of Coptic literature.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the G\u00f6ttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. It depicts a variety of individual stories, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\r\n\r\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\r\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980\u2019s and identified strongly as a \u2018struggle photographer\u2019. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid, HIV\/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\r\n\r\nA leading contemporary photographer, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\r\n\r\nHis on-going project \u2018Drowning World, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\r\n\r\nThe work began in 2007, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events, and the shared experiences of those affected.\r\n\r\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008), Pakistan (2010), Australia (2011), Thailand (2011), Nigeria (2012), Germany (2013), The Philippines (2013), The UK (2014), India (2014), Brazil (2015), Bangladesh (2015), the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\r\n\r\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Her research is funded by a K23 Career Development Award from the National Eye Institute and a Research to Prevent Blindness Career Development Award. \r\nDuring the talk, \u201cThe Intelligent Glaucoma Clinic: A Passive RFID Time Study System to Optimize Patient Wait Times,\u201d Dr. Newman-Casey will describe design choices that enabled the development of a low-cost, continuous automated, passive time-motion study in the glaucoma clinic. \r\nABSTRACT: Objective: Outpatient clinics lack infrastructure to easily track and improve patient wait times. Our objective was to design a low-cost, portable passive RFID system for real time localization within an outpatient clinic setting to measure patients wait times. \r\nMaterials and Methods: Direct observation was used to determine workflow in an outpatient glaucoma clinic at the University of Michigan. We used off-the shelf integrated ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID readers (ThingMagic, Astra-Ex, Woburn, MA), UHF re-useable passive RFID tags (Zebra Impinj Monza 4QT, Seattle, WA) and a custom java RFID management application that was equipped with \u2018live\u2019 device administration to collect time and location data from patients and providers; these choices enabled low cost system installation. Hidden Markov modeling was used to smooth patient and provider location data. The model was validated with: 1) direct patient observations 2) direct provider observations and 3) comparison of provider location by electronic health record audit log trail. \r\nResults: The smoothed RFID system data accurately predicted patient and provider presence >80% of the time. \r\nDiscussion: Passive RFID time study systems can enable real time localization of people in clinic, facilitating continuous capture of patient wait times. It has been the focus of multiple federal programs and funding agency (NSF, NIH, IES, Gates Foundation) initiatives. Even with all of this focus and research dollars, we see very few changes in children increasing their ability in mathematics especially in foundational skills like fractions. This presentation will review my research over the last few years on trying to understand the developmental pathways of math achievement. I will explore both individual characteristics (self-concept) and contextual influences (parenting, socioeconomic status) that may relate to the early development of math skills. Throughout the talk, the issue of whether or not counting is an important skill as children enter into schooling will be discussed as well as how math skills prior to formal schooling predict to college attendance.\r\n\r\nBio: Dr. Davis-Kean is Professor of Psychology (Developmental) at the University of Michigan where her research focuses on the various pathways that the socio-economic status (SES) of parents relates to the cognitive\/achievement outcomes of their children, specifically math achievement. Her primary focus is on parental educational attainment and how it can influence the development of the home environment throughout childhood, adolescence, and the transition to adulthood. Davis-Kean is also a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research where she is the Program Director of the Population, Neurodevelopment, and Genetics (PNG) program. This collaboration examines the complex transactions of brain, biology, and behavior as children and families develop across time.
