SUMMARY:Other:LSA Honors #GivingBlueday Campaign 11.27.18
DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year\, the Honors Program is participating in the university-wide #GivingBlueday online fundraising campaign\, which falls annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. \n\nHere are Director Mika LaVaque-Manty's words on your impact opportunity\, sent recently as a letter to friends of Honors and alumni. Giving at every level is appreciated. Thank you for your support!\n\nBegin letter:\nGreetings from Ann Arbor! I write this from the newly renovated Honors Program office suite. With significant support from the College of LSA and our own funds\, Honors was able to bring our space to the twenty-first century. (If you had been in our space in the last ten years\, you will remember it looking\, as the dean put it\, rather sad.) The renovated space is more welcoming to our students\, whom we want to feel comfortable during advising\, at events\, or even stopping by to study. We also have a new conference room\, which is getting a lot of use particularly by our Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships (ONSF).\n\nIndeed\, ONSF\, which is part of Honors but provides a service to the entire U-M community\, has been remarkably successful. Last year\, its director\, Henry Dyson\, shepherded an unprecedented four U-M students to national finals for the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships — and ultimately to yet another Rhodes Scholar for Michigan\, Nadine Jawad. These our four finalists were just the tip of the iceberg\, \nas you may have read in the Honors Forum.\n\nAlso in the Forum\, you may have read about English senior Kai Mason\, who is pursuing our new Honors graduation opportunity\, Honors in Engaged Liberal Arts (HELA). With HELA\, instead of a thesis\, a student can graduate with Honors through a rigorous integration of leadership or other type of civic engagement with their academic work. This recognition arose from our observation that some of our best students forgo the conventional thesis because they are too busy making the world a better place — doing it intentionally\, often inspired by something in their curriculum and using further coursework to make sure their action is not just morally commendable\, but exemplifies the high standards of Honors. \n\nOne of our goals is to make HELA a feasible option for all students\, similar to the ways we already have of supporting our students’ research. It is\, therefore\, one of our primary philanthropic priorities in the next year or so\, as the program grows. Of course\, we welcome your help for any of the ways we have supported and will continue to support our students. You may participate in U-M’s #GivingBlueDay on Tuesday\, November 27\, remember us in your year-end gift — or just reward us by staying in touch. We love to hear from our alumni and friends! \n\nMeanwhile\, I wish you a lovely Thanksgiving \nand holiday season.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal Friends: Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Marcia Polenberg loves animals\, each with its own unique personality\, intelligence and expressive range of emotions. Using terra-cotta sculpture clay\, Polenberg hand builds her ceramic animals\, seemingly bringing them to life. The face of each one-of-a-kind work of art expresses happiness\, surprise\, mischief\, or a free spirit. Every sculpture is glazed and fired many times\, building up a rich\, textured colored surface. Holding an MFA from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in ceramics and sculpture and a BA from the City University of New York in painting\, Polenberg widely exhibits her creative works in several media: ceramics\, paint\, graphite and pastel.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:ASC/WiSER Mellon Workshop 2018. The Filmic and the Photographic: African Visual Cultures
DESCRIPTION:There is a rich and growing literature in African Studies that critically assesses both past and present generations of photography and film in Africa. One thread in this body of work looks for ways of centering African photographers and filmmakers as creators of new styles\, looks\, and subjectivities. Another thread looks at the artistic environments that Africans created\, at the ways in which images (both still and filmic) shaped religious sentiments and formed communities. A third thread looks at what is termed vernacular photography in distinct African locations\, focusing on the materiality and mobility of images. A fourth thread looks at processes of archival preservation\, collection and digitization as well as creative acts of recuperation\, that is\, newly curated exhibits of old things—both photographs and films. A final thread explores how Africans engaged\, appropriated\, synthesized\, interpreted filmic and photographic practices from beyond Africa. \n \nThis workshop will bring together a range of scholars working on these and other contemporary issues in the field of African visual cultures. We are interested in blurring the photographic with the filmic in order to explore the qualities of one as inherent to the other.\n\nPanel sessions are free and open to the public. Visit ii.umich.edu/asc/ahi and click the U-M/WiSER Mellon Workshop section for conference details.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Organic Fiction: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Hava Gurevich’s colorful abstractions feature botanical\, aquatic and microscopic motifs as she explores repeating patterns in nature. Blending images from the real world and her imagination\, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty\, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature\, such as tree branches\, ice patterns\, twisted vines\, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures\, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:David Cope: Player of Invisible Keys
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of Michigan poet David Cope\, once described by Allen Ginsberg as one of the \"leading lights of the next generation.\" This exhibit draws on drafts\, proofs\, and other documents from Cope's archive to offer a glimpse into his poetic and editorial process.\n\nWorking most often in the Objectivist tradition of Charles Reznikoff\, Carl Rakosi\, and George Oppen\, David Cope has a particular gift for descriptive detail and for juxtaposing the the intimacy of daily life with commentary on the arc of current events and the particularity of personal relationships with the universality of human experience. He received the Pushcart Prize for “The Crash” in 1977 and an award in literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for On The Bridge (1986). Additionally\, for more than forty years\, Cope has edited and published a small press literary magazine\, The Big Scream\, providing a venue for more than 200 poets\, including both big names names and younger\, lesser-known poets. Earlier this year\, Ghost Pony Press released Cope’s eighth poetry collection: The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems.\n\nOn view during Special Collections Research Center hours: Monday-Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Deluge
DESCRIPTION:Five Channel Video Installation\n13 Minutes\, 27 Seconds.\n\nDeluge is a culmination of Mendel’s ten years of work on the Drowning World project\, shooting video and stills in thirteen different countries. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Each location added has intensified the narrative impact of the endeavour.\n\nDrowning World now consists of four parallel and connected narrative elements: Submerged Portraits\, Flood Lines\, Watermarks\, and Deluge.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:No Test Exists!   Why Tests Applied to Individuals Cannot Determine Optimal Cognitive Teams (A Many Model Approach)
DESCRIPTION:**DONATION LINK AT BOTTOM OF PAGE**\n\nMost cognitive work is now done in teams.  That is true in the academy\, the private sector\, and the public sector.  Yet\, with few exceptions\, most hiring is done at the individual level.   Fairness combined with concerns about hiring the \"best\"\, lead many organizations to adopt scoring rules for hiring and admissions.  As seen in the recent lawsuit involving Harvard admissions\,  Harvard combines test scores\, GPA\, personality factors\, and legacy status in coming up with a score for each applicant. Those applicants with the highest scores gain acceptance.\n\nOver the past decade and a half\, a series of theoretical papers by Hong and Page\; Marcolino\, Jiang and Tambe\; Kleinberg and Raghu\; and Bendor and Page have shown either directly or implicitly that on complex tasks\, no such test can exist. That is\, no test applied to individuals\, will identify the best team.   \n\nThe talk will discuss these models plus several more and then place them on axiomatic foundations\, showing that\, in fact\, for a test to exist\, the problem must be relatively simple. \n __________________________________\n \nThis is a special talk to help kick off the newly established Rick Riolo Memorial Fund. Giving Blueday and the day of the release of Scott Page's new book The Model Thinker happen to fall on the same day.\n\nDonors to the RRMF may also receive a Free Copy of this new book. If you donate $100 or more between the hours of 11:30am and 2:00pm tomorrow\, you will receive a free signed copy of book. Dr. Page has generously purchased advanced copies of the book to help raise support for the new fund. Thank you to Basic Books for allowing the advanced purchase.\n\nThe Model Thinker: What You Need To Know To Make Data Work For You (2018 Basic Books) is available to purchase on November 27. \n\nThe Model Thinker explains why we model\, advocates an interdisciplinary approach to modeling and contains accessible descriptions of more than two dozen models.   Prior to its release\, The Model Thinker has been an Amazon top 10 new release in data science\, stochastic modeling\, engineering transportation\, financial engineering\, game theory and both areas of statistics: baseball statistics and biostatistics. It is currently the #1 new release in Business Planning and Forecasting.  The book officially goes on sale on Amazon on Nov. 27th.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Neural Basis for the Metabolic Control of Reproduction\n\nIt is well-established that a minimum amount of stored energy is required for normal pubertal development and for reproductive health in adult life. On the other hand\, excess energy also negatively impacts the reproductive physiology. Elevated adiposity in women aggravates polycystic ovary syndrome\, ovulatory dysfunction and decreases the reproductive capacity. In obese men\, fertility is diminished due to altered activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and defective steroidogenesis. The increasing rates of childhood obesity have been correlated with early puberty and its deleterious consequences. Earlier menarche in girls is associated with increased risk of adult obesity\, type 2 Diabetes and breast cancer. Thus\, changing levels of key metabolic cues is an essential signal to the onset of puberty and the adequate function of the reproductive system in adult life. The adipocyte hormone leptin signals the amount of energy stored to the HPG axis. Humans and mice with leptin signaling deficiency are obese and infertile\, remaining in a pre-pubertal state. However\, the neural basis for the primary reproductive actions of leptin remains unclear. Our laboratory has identified the hypothalamic ventral premammillary nucleus (PMV) as an essential relay of leptin action in reproductive physiology. Our working hypothesis is that the PMV has three distinct neuronal components\, i.e.\, one excitatory\, one inhibitory\, and one synchronizer. The balance among them would determine the responses of the HPG axis to metabolic challenges. In this seminar\, we will discuss the findings supporting our hypothesis. We have used viro- and chemo-genetic in mouse models to determine the roles of glutamate neurotransmission (excitatory component) and dopamine transporter-expressing neurons (inhibitory component) in reproductive control. We will also discuss preliminary and ongoing studies indicating the nitric oxide works as a synchronizer component in the activity of the PMV neuronal network.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Was the Opium War Really Destined to Happen?
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore some of the countercurrents to our dominant understanding of the era leading up to the Opium War of 1839-1842\, focusing in particular on the voices of Chinese scholars who counseled pragmatism in foreign relations\, the continued debates on opium policy in China\, and the powerful political coalition in Great Britain that tried to terminate the war as soon as it was launched. \n \nStephen R. Platt is Professor of Chinese history at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst\, where he focuses mainly on China's place in the 19th-century world. He holds a 2004 PhD in history from Yale University\, where his dissertation won the university-wide Theron Rockwell Field Prize. He is the author of three books\, the first of which was \"Provincial Patriots\,\" a history of reformers and revolutionaries in Hunan Province. His second book\, \"Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom\,\" was a history of the Taiping Rebellion in global context that was chosen as a Washington Post notable book of 2012 and won the Cundill History Prize. His latest book\, from which the material for his talk is taken\, is a history of the long-term origins of the Opium War titled \"Imperial Twilight.\" \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Other:On the path to analytical utopia through the resolution of isomers by mass spectrometry
DESCRIPTION: Advances in mass spectrometry over recent years have significantly improved the mass-resolving power of modern instrumentation and the speed with which high mass-accuracy data can be acquired. These advances have underpinned increased confidence in compound identification in complex mixtures and opened up entirely new means of data acquisition including the next generation of data-independent analytical workflows. While powerful\, an inherent limitation in all these analytical approaches lies in the discrimination of isomers which\, by definition\, share the same elemental composition and thus the exact same mass. Conventional approaches to isomer discrimination have relied on chromatographic separations prior to mass analysis and tandem mass spectrometry however\, this has proven a limited tool box for structurally similar isomers (e.g.\, regioisomers) and can significantly extend analysis times. Fortunately\, exciting new developments in ion-mobility and ion-activation technologies are emerging to tackle the challenge of isomer-discrimination by mass spectrometry. This presentation will address the latest developments in these rapidly emerging technology areas in the context of lipidomic analysis with examples illustrating effective discrimination of regio- and even stereo-isomers. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStephen Blanksby (Queensland University of Technology)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM/AMO Seminar | Unconventional Thermal Metallic State of Charge Neutral Fermions in Topological Kondo Insulator YbB_{12}
DESCRIPTION:Recent observations of quantum oscillations (QOs) in Kondo insulators SmB_6 [1]\, [2] and YbB_{12} [3] have been a big surprise since they seem to host Fermi surfaces\, which is a defining character of a metal. Though there have been several theoretical proposals to explain this mystery so far\, it is far from settled because of lack of experimental inspections by other means of measurements. In this talk\, I will present low-temperature heat-transport measurements to discuss low energy excitations in the ground state of YbB_{12}. At zero field\, despite the resistivity rho_{xx} being far larger than that of conventional metals\, sizeable T-linear dependent terms in the specific heat C and thermal conductivity K_{xx} in the zero-temperature limit are clearly resolved\, leading to a spectacular violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law: the Lorenz ratio L = K_{xx} rho_{xx}/T is 10^4-10^5 times larger than that expected in conventional metals. These data indicate that YbB_{12} is a charge insulator but a thermal metal\, suggesting the presence of itinerant neutral fermions. Remarkably\, more insulating crystals with larger activation energies exhibit larger amplitudes of the resistive QOs as well as a larger K_{xx}/T (T rightarrow 0)\, in stark contrast to conventional metals. Moreover\, we find that these fermions couple to magnetic field despite their charge neutrality\, whereas no discernible thermal Hall angle is resolved within our resolution up to 12T. Our findings expose novel gapless and highly itinerant\, charge-neutral quasi-particles in this unconventional quantum state.\n\n[1] G. Li et al.\, Science 346\, 1208 (2014).\n[2] B. S. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Diasporic Dialogues with Rhea Rahman (Brooklyn College)
DESCRIPTION:Graduate institute for Design\, Ethnography and Social Thought (GIDEST_ program assistant RHEA RAHMAN is a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology at The New School for Social Research. Her research engages the multiple motivating logics and materializations of religiously inspired international development work. In her ethnographic investigation of a British-based\, global Muslim NGO\, she examines how institutionalized and secular accountability of professionalized development comes to bear on religious decrees and Islamic ethical stances. Having worked with the NGO in England\, Mali\, South Africa\, and the Netherlands\, she explores the complicated striving through which it tries to create a cohesive organizational identity that encompasses the diversity of the places\, people\, and things with which it engages.

SUMMARY:Other:Main-Group Metallomimetics: Strategies for Metal-Free Catalysis and Small-Molecule Activation
DESCRIPTION: The importance of transition metals (TMs) in modern catalysis cannot be overstated. TM-based catalysts enable processes that are of tremendous human and economic importance\; they have innumerable applications in many industrial sectors. However\, the toxicity\, price and natural scarcity of many elements that are used in TM catalysis fuels an interest for the development of metal-free catalysts based on the main-group elements. However\, contrary to many catalytically-active TM-complexes\, classical main-group compounds do not possess the combination of empty and filled orbitals that is crucial for the complex electronic processes involved in the elemental steps of catalytic cycles. The development of catalysts based on the p-block elements thus requires the design and application of unique strategies. In this talk\, I will present two approaches for the metallomimetic application of boron compounds to small-molecule activation\, to reduction processes\, and to organic functionalization reactions. I will discuss systems that involve the combination of single and multiple active sites in order to mimic the electronic environment of TM complexes. Similarities and differences in the reactivity of main-group compounds and TM complexes will also be highlighted. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMarc-Andre Legare\, PhD (Universitat Wurzburg)

SUMMARY:Performance:Reading of “canned meat” (“dosenfleisch”)
DESCRIPTION:Reading by playwright in German\nEnglish translation by Neil Blackadder\nPerformed by students and faculty of the School of Music\, Theatre\, & Dance: Kris Danford\, Liam Loomer\, Sarah Prendergast\, Malcolm Tulip\n \n\"And so now here we are lying on this rest area like a whale\, a stranded whale. The flesh starts to rot when we can’t keep driving. As long as you’re moving\, you don’t decay.\"\n\nA truck driver has to stop at a motorway service area due to a disastrous accident. Frustrated by the forced standstill\, he watches the nightly events. An insurance inspector\, obsessed with any traffic accidents\, investigates the so-called death curve at the service area. But there is as well Beate\, the operator of the rest stop\, who shares a dark secret with Jayne\, an auto-aggressive television actress addicted to high-speed.\n\nFerdinand Schmalz’s ‘canned meat’ is a metaphor for the paradox of mobility in times of neoliberalism. One can get everywhere\, but never to one self – thus\, the only possibility left to achieve authenticity is the life-threatening collision.\n\nFerdinand Schmalz is an Austrian author and playwright. His works include “am beispiel der butter\,” “dosenfleisch\,” “herzerlfresser\,” and “jedermann (stirbt).” His plays are staged at the leading theatres in Germany\, Switzerland\, and Austria\, e.g. Deutsches Theater\, Burgtheater Wien\, Schauspiel Leipzig\, Schauspielhaus Zürich. He won several awards for his writing\, beyond others the Retzhofer Dramapreis (2013)\, the Ingeborg Bachmann Preis (2017)\, and the Ludwig-Mülheims-Theaterpreis (2018). For “dosenfleisch” he was nominated for the most prestigious drama award in the German-speaking countries\, the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis. Furthermore\, “dosenfleisch” was invited to the Autorentheatertage in Berlin.\n\nThe reading is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. These events are free and open to the public. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate\, please contact 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu at least one week in advance.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cognitive Science Community
DESCRIPTION:The next student-led discussion of Cognitive Science Community will take place Tuesday\, November 27th\, starting at 6:30 p.m. This week's topic is Cognitive Biases\, and the discussion leader will be Nick Hollman.\n\nDiscussion overview: Cognitive biases plague nearly all aspects of our lives. They influence how we make decisions\, predictions\, and judgments calls. This presentation will focus specifically on how cognitive biases get in the way of effectively helping others. \"Why doesn't our caring scale with the size of the problem or number of people in need?\" and \"What are the implications of this?\" are examples of the questions posed in this presentation. We will start with a brief introduction to the topic of cognitive biases and then explore the intersection with altruism. Lecture\, discussion\, and small group activity included.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Writer to Writer w/ Heather Ann Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Sweetland Center for Writing's Writer to Writer series lets you hear directly from University of Michigan professors about their challenges\, processes\, and expectations as writers and also as readers of student writing. Each semester\, Writer to Writer pairs one esteemed University professor with a Sweetland faculty member for a conversation about writing. \n\nThis month Writer to Writer welcomes Heather Ann Thompson. Dr. Heather Ann Thompson is a historian at the University of Michigan in the Department of Afro-American and African Studies\, the Department of History\, and the Residential College. She is the Pulitzer Prize and Bancroft Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy (2016). Blood in the Water received six additional book awards and landed on over 20 best of 2016 book lists including that of the New York Times. \n\nThompson is also a public intellectual who writes regularly on the history of policing\, mass incarceration and the current criminal justice system for The New York Times\, Newsweek\, Time\, The Washington Post\, Rolling Stone\, The Atlantic\, and many other national publications. \n\nThis year\, Thompson was awarded a Bearing Witness Writing Fellowship from the Art for Justice fund of the Ford Foundation. Her next book is on the MOVE bombing of 1985.\n\nWriter to Writer takes place at the Literati bookstore (124 E. Washington) on Tuesday\, November 27th from 7-8pm and is also broadcast live on WCBN radio (88.3FM). These conversations offer students a rare glimpse into the writing that professors do outside the classroom. You can hear instructors from various disciplines describe how they handle the same challenges student writers face\, from finding a thesis to managing deadlines. Professors will also discuss what they want from student writers in their courses\, and will take questions put forth by students and by other members of the University community. If there's anything you've ever wanted to ask a professor about writing\, Writer to Writer gives you the chance.
