SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Science Brown Bag: Emotion Regulation Therapy: Translating affect science principles to improve clinical outcomes for refractory disorders
DESCRIPTION:Despite extensive efficacy findings\, a sizable subgroup of individuals remains refractory to CBT. In particular\, patients with “distress disorders” (generalized anxiety disorder and/or major depressive disorder) evidence suboptimal treatment response coupled with reduced life functioning and satisfaction. These patients are often characterized by intense emotional experiences resulting in an inordinately cautious manner that favors protection over reward as well as perseverative cognition (i.e.\, worry\, rumination) that disrupts new contextual learning. Using this hypothesized profile as a framework\, Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) was developed as a theoretically-derived\, evidence based\, treatment integrating principles from traditional and contemporary CBT with basic and translational findings from affect science to offer a blueprint for improving intervention by focusing on the motivational responses and corresponding regulatory characteristics of individuals with distress disorders. This presentation will offer an introduction to ERT by reviewing open-label and randomized controlled trial findings as well as recent studies that begin to elucidate the neurobehavioral and peripheral psychophysiological markers for the proposed underlying mechanisms.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Deluge
DESCRIPTION:Five Channel Video Installation\n13 Minutes\, 27 Seconds.\n\nDeluge is a culmination of Mendel’s ten years of work on the Drowning World project\, shooting video and stills in thirteen different countries. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Each location added has intensified the narrative impact of the endeavour.\n\nDrowning World now consists of four parallel and connected narrative elements: Submerged Portraits\, Flood Lines\, Watermarks\, and Deluge.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Development of Micro Gas Chromatographs and Micro Photoionization Detectors
DESCRIPTION:Micro gas chromatographs are miniaturized analytical instruments developed based on gas chromatography (GC) and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems technologies for fast\, on-site\, volatile compound analysis. The small footprint of these devices enables portability\, low power consumption\, and fast analysis time. Due to these features\, micro gas chromatographs can be applied to environmental monitoring\, homeland security\, and online quality tracking. This dissertation describes the development of prototype instruments as well as studies of core components such as micro preconcentrators\, microcolumns\, Deans switches\, and micro vapor detectors. Two nondestructive photoionization detectors have been developed and verified to have ultra-low detection limits (few pg) as well as rapid response rates. The micro flow-through photoionization detector (micro-PID) integrates microfluidic channels and ionization chambers on monolithic chips\, providing ‘on column detection’ for analytes. The micro-PID can be used at fluidic interfaces between each dimension in multidimensional GC systems for obtaining additional information for gas routing control and signal reconstruction. Helium dielectric barrier discharge photoionization detectors use helium plasma as an ionization source to emit photons with energies up to 17.5 eV. Thus\, these detectors can serve as universal vapor sensors and will expand the application scope of micro GC systems. These detectors were used in an application on formaldehyde detection\, which was studied with a heart cutting two-dimensional (2D) micro GC. Target compounds can be transferred into the second-dimensional system for further precise separation and detection. Analysis of other air pollution-related\, toxic compounds was performed by the first-dimensional column and micro-PID simultaneously. The formaldehyde low detection limit of the novel 2D system was tested to be sub-ppb (V/V) level with 6 min of sampling. The design\, fabrication\, and evaluation of separation microcolumns are also discussed in this dissertation. A stationary phase thickness gradient coated microcolumn was developed to generate high-resolution chromatograms by introducing a peak focusing effect. Additionally\, a hybrid adhesive connection method was developed for high-temperature applications and evaluated to be leak free and volatile compound free up to 350 °C even after thermal cycling. By integrating all miniaturized components\, including micro preconcentrators\, microcolumns\, and micro-PIDs\, an ultra-compact micro GC system (147 g in weight and 0.14 L in volume) was constructed. By scaling down the system\, we achieved high separation performance and low power consumption\, which clearly separated 14 compounds in 3 minutes.\n\nChair: Dr. Xudong Fan

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Lay Theories of Effortful Honesty
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nAre our moral decisions and actions influenced by our beliefs about how much effort it takes to do the right thing? A rich body of literature in moral psychology debates whether being honest closely resembles System I processes—fast\, instinctual\, and effortless— or System II processes—slower\, deliberative\, and effortful. Researchers’ strong emphasis on explaining honesty with either System I or System II thinking has limited the scope of moral psychology investigation to a particular subset of moral situations that bolsters either view. Instead of taking sides with either camp\, we move beyond the debate and identify lay theories about morality and effort as an alternative lever of our moral decision making. Specifically\, we ask where people actually stand on this debate. This research provides novel insights into how our lay theories linking honesty and effort can help us rationalize our dishonesty.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LOOK 101: Seeing Art in an Instagram World
DESCRIPTION:PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. SEE LINK BELOW.\n\nGeared toward undergraduate students and focusing on the current exhibitions at the Institute for the Humanities\, this contemporary series of discussions offers a fresh take on the basics of looking and evaluating art in the gallery and how it’s organized\, making the connection from the traditional “white cube gallery” to iGen visual worlds like Facebook and Instagram. Lunch will be served. Today: How to look at the art of Gideon Mendel with Institute for the Humanities curator Amanda Krugliak. \n\nAbout the exhibition:\n\nThis five-channel video installation titled \"Floodlines\" is the culmination of the video element of Drowning World\, South African photographer Gideon Mendel's on-going project exploring the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries.\n\n\"Floodlines\" explores the tension between the frozen photographic moment and the perpetual movement and uncertainty of dystopian\, post-flood environments. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronously edited global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods he has shot a vast archive of footage in eleven different countries\, which is fully activated in this presentation. \n\nIn addition to the video installation in the main gallery\, there will be a time-based process wall of photographs that Mendel will work on in the Osterman Common Room\, in collaboration with Curator Amanda Krugliak and U-M students.

SUMMARY:Other:Unseen Influences: A Dyadic Approach to Understanding the Links between Social and Biological Processes
DESCRIPTION:In what ways are social experiences affected by biological states—how tired\, hungry\, sick\, or physiologically aroused we are? In turn\, how do social experiences impact biological processes? Are these effects contagious\, spreading across people? In this talk\, I explore these questions\, focusing on one particular biological process\, sleep. More than 69% of U.S. adults get less sleep than they need\, making sleep problems an increasingly ubiquitous and problematic issue. In Part 1\, I examine the reciprocal relationship between sleep and social rejection\, including discrimination. In Part 2\, I take a dyadic perspective\, considering the ways in which people are influenced not only by their own sleep\, but by their romantic partner’s sleep as well. Across studies\, I highlight physiological and cognitive mechanisms underlying these links\, as well as identify individual differences that make people more or less vulnerable to them. These studies utilize a multi-method approach\, combining self-report\, observational\, and behavioral measures with autonomic nervous system reactivity and neuroendocrine responses in both naturalistic (longitudinal\, daily experience) and experimental (lab- and field-based) designs. Together\, these studies highlight the ways in which social and biological processes can exert potentially unseen influence on each other\, creating the possibility of a vicious cycle\, not just within one individual\, but across people as well.

DESCRIPTION: Mammalian genes are regulated by enhancers\, which can be hundreds of kilobases to megabases away from the gene whose expression they control by forming chromatin loops. Understanding mammalian gene regulation therefore requires understanding 3D genome organization. We have developed new chemical biology\, computational and biophysical approaches to visualize the key proteins\, CTCF and cohesin\, that control chromatin looping at single-molecule resolution inside living cells. Similarly\, we have developed approaches to directly visualize chromatin loops and to follow them dynamically as they form\, function\, and break inside living cells. We will discuss our results from these studies\, which suggest that 3D genome organization and chromatin loops are likely much more dynamic than previously anticipated. \n \n \n \n \nAnders Hansen\, PhD (UC Berkeley)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Anti-nuclei Cosmic-Rays and Dark Matter\n
DESCRIPTION:Antimatter cosmic-ray measurements have long been used to advance our understanding of high energy astrophysical phenomena in the Galaxy. Using the antiproton cosmic-ray measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on board the International Space Station\, I will present work in search of unexpected sources of antiprotons. In doing that\, I will discuss the uncertainties related to the interstellar propagation of cosmic-rays\, the antiproton production cross-section uncertainties from inelastic cosmic-ray collisions the interstellar medium\, as well as the uncertainties from the effects of the solar wind. At the GeV range there is an excess of cosmic-ray antiprotons that could be accounted for by a dark matter particle in the mass range of 50 to 90 GeV. Furthermore I will discuss the prospects of detecting anti-deuterons and anti-Helium nuclei produced both from inelastic collisions of high energy cosmic-rays with the interstellar medium gas from dark matter annihilations. Interestingly\, under certain assumptions relating to the properties of the Milky Way we may be able to detect with AMS\, cosmic-ray anti-deuterons and anti-Helium from annihilating dark matter particles.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker. The Sentimental Body: Medical Humanitarianism and the Late Colonial Public in Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the role of medical humanitarianism in formations and fantasies of the native public in late colonial Indonesia. It looks at a particular institution that stood at the vanguard of humanitarian care in the late colonial period: the missionary clinic. Missionary medical care proved to be a rallying point among Dutch colonial and metropolitan citizens who praised it as a form of humanitarian care and colonial benevolence. In recognizing this celebration of medical humanitarianism as a response to growing anxieties over the nature and direction of the native mass public\, this talk pursues a set of interrelated questions: How and why did missionary clinics and hospitals gain such broad colonial appeal? And what sort of native biological\, political\, and expressive bodies and publics did humanitarian care promise to create? In exploring these questions\, this talk will place medicine\, care\, the native body\, and the native public more centrally in our understanding of the politics and ethics of the self-proclaimed Ethical (Ethische) Period of Dutch colonialism (1900-1942) in Indonesia. It will then end by briefly considering Muslim responses to missionary humanitarian care starting in the 1920s.\n\nBiosketch: Kevin Ko is a postdoctoral scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and an assistant professor in the Department of History. He specializes in modern Southeast Asian history with particular interests in medicine\, religion\, the body\, and the public sphere in late colonial Indonesia. He is at work on a book project that examines the role of health\, medicine\, and the body in Christian and Muslim reform movements in late colonial Indonesia.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 813 Seminar: Brian George
DESCRIPTION:Surgeons are a key input to achieving high quality surgical care. Unfortunately there is accumulating evidence that some surgeons are not competent by the time they finish their training and enter independent practice. The causes of these deficits are manifold and complex\, but regardless represent a failure of the healthcare educational system to keep pace with a) the rapidly changing healthcare delivery system\, b) the increasing complexity of modern medicine\, and c) changing cultural norms. New approaches will be needed to update the training paradigm\, including the application of engineering methods such as quality assurance\, predictive analytics\, and quality/process improvement. This talk will describe some of the innovations occurring in these domains as well as present a roadmap for how more rigorous analysis and design should shape future medical education policy.\n\nDr. Brian C. George is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He serves in many local and national leadership roles in surgical education\, including as the Executive Director of the Procedural Learning and Safety Collaborative\, a multi-institutional research consortium\, and the Associate Program Director for the University of Michigan’s General Surgery Residency and the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. \n\nDr. George completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Michigan and then worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. He later completed his MD at the University of California San Francisco\, his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital\, and a Trauma/Surgical Critical Care fellowship at University of Washington’s Harborview Hospital. He also has a Master’s degree in Quantitative Assessment and Evaluation from the University of California Berkeley’s School of Education. \n\nDr. George’s primary academic focus is on operative performance assessment and bridging the gap between surgical education research and health services research. Dr. George’s ultimate goal is to help develop evidence-based and patient-centered standards for surgical training.\n\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach.\nFor additional information and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, \nplease contact genehkim@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Performance:Bill Kirchen's Honky-Tonk Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Bill Kirchen is an Ann Arbor-bred guitar god\, a Telecaster titan who whirls through a whole gallery of country and rock styles over the course of an evening. After a stint as lead guitarist with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen\, he's gone on to an acclaimed solo career\, and when he returns to town at the holidays his concerts turn into joyous reunions celebrating the glory days of the Ann Arbor honky-tonk scene\, with special guests often on hand. Some things haven't changed—the Austin American-Statesman recently praised his \"no-nonsense diesel guitar attack\, powered by great booming\, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease.\" But Bill has evolved into a very funny rockabilly and country songwriter as well. This honky-tonk holiday show\, which has often featured special guests\, will get you in the mood for New Year's Eve a few weeks early!
