In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\r\n\r\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\r\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980\u2019s and identified strongly as a \u2018struggle photographer\u2019. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid, HIV\/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\r\n\r\nA leading contemporary photographer, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\r\n\r\nHis on-going project \u2018Drowning World, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\r\n\r\nThe work began in 2007, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events, and the shared experiences of those affected.\r\n\r\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008), Pakistan (2010), Australia (2011), Thailand (2011), Nigeria (2012), Germany (2013), The Philippines (2013), The UK (2014), India (2014), Brazil (2015), Bangladesh (2015), the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\r\n\r\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. The small footprint of these devices enables portability, low power consumption, and fast analysis time. Due to these features, micro gas chromatographs can be applied to environmental monitoring, homeland security, and online quality tracking. This dissertation describes the development of prototype instruments as well as studies of core components such as micro preconcentrators, microcolumns, Deans switches, and micro vapor detectors. Two nondestructive photoionization detectors have been developed and verified to have ultra-low detection limits (few pg) as well as rapid response rates. The micro flow-through photoionization detector (micro-PID) integrates microfluidic channels and ionization chambers on monolithic chips, providing \u2018on column detection\u2019 for analytes. The micro-PID can be used at fluidic interfaces between each dimension in multidimensional GC systems for obtaining additional information for gas routing control and signal reconstruction. Helium dielectric barrier discharge photoionization detectors use helium plasma as an ionization source to emit photons with energies up to 17.5 eV. Thus, these detectors can serve as universal vapor sensors and will expand the application scope of micro GC systems. These detectors were used in an application on formaldehyde detection, which was studied with a heart cutting two-dimensional (2D) micro GC. Target compounds can be transferred into the second-dimensional system for further precise separation and detection. Analysis of other air pollution-related, toxic compounds was performed by the first-dimensional column and micro-PID simultaneously. The formaldehyde low detection limit of the novel 2D system was tested to be sub-ppb (V\/V) level with 6 min of sampling. The design, fabrication, and evaluation of separation microcolumns are also discussed in this dissertation. A stationary phase thickness gradient coated microcolumn was developed to generate high-resolution chromatograms by introducing a peak focusing effect. Additionally, a hybrid adhesive connection method was developed for high-temperature applications and evaluated to be leak free and volatile compound free up to 350 \u00b0C even after thermal cycling. By integrating all miniaturized components, including micro preconcentrators, microcolumns, and micro-PIDs, an ultra-compact micro GC system (147 g in weight and 0.14 L in volume) was constructed. In this talk, I explore these questions, focusing on one particular biological process, sleep. More than 69% of U.S. adults get less sleep than they need, making sleep problems an increasingly ubiquitous and problematic issue. In Part 1, I examine the reciprocal relationship between sleep and social rejection, including discrimination. In Part 2, I take a dyadic perspective, considering the ways in which people are influenced not only by their own sleep, but by their romantic partner\u2019s sleep as well. Across studies, I highlight physiological and cognitive mechanisms underlying these links, as well as identify individual differences that make people more or less vulnerable to them. These studies utilize a multi-method approach, combining self-report, observational, and behavioral measures with autonomic nervous system reactivity and neuroendocrine responses in both naturalistic (longitudinal, daily experience) and experimental (lab- and field-based) designs. At the GeV range there is an excess of cosmic-ray antiprotons that could be accounted for by a dark matter particle in the mass range of 50 to 90 GeV. Furthermore I will discuss the prospects of detecting anti-deuterons and anti-Helium nuclei produced both from inelastic collisions of high energy cosmic-rays with the interstellar medium gas from dark matter annihilations. It looks at a particular institution that stood at the vanguard of humanitarian care in the late colonial period: the missionary clinic. Missionary medical care proved to be a rallying point among Dutch colonial and metropolitan citizens who praised it as a form of humanitarian care and colonial benevolence. In recognizing this celebration of medical humanitarianism as a response to growing anxieties over the nature and direction of the native mass public, this talk pursues a set of interrelated questions: How and why did missionary clinics and hospitals gain such broad colonial appeal? And what sort of native biological, political, and expressive bodies and publics did humanitarian care promise to create? In exploring these questions, this talk will place medicine, care, the native body, and the native public more centrally in our understanding of the politics and ethics of the self-proclaimed Ethical (Ethische) Period of Dutch colonialism (1900-1942) in Indonesia. It will then end by briefly considering Muslim responses to missionary humanitarian care starting in the 1920s.\r\n\r\nBiosketch: Kevin Ko is a postdoctoral scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and an assistant professor in the Department of History. He specializes in modern Southeast Asian history with particular interests in medicine, religion, the body, and the public sphere in late colonial Indonesia. Unfortunately there is accumulating evidence that some surgeons are not competent by the time they finish their training and enter independent practice. The causes of these deficits are manifold and complex, but regardless represent a failure of the healthcare educational system to keep pace with a) the rapidly changing healthcare delivery system, b) the increasing complexity of modern medicine, and c) changing cultural norms. New approaches will be needed to update the training paradigm, including the application of engineering methods such as quality assurance, predictive analytics, and quality\/process improvement. This talk will describe some of the innovations occurring in these domains as well as present a roadmap for how more rigorous analysis and design should shape future medical education policy.\r\n\r\nDr. Brian C. George is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He serves in many local and national leadership roles in surgical education, including as the Executive Director of the Procedural Learning and Safety Collaborative, a multi-institutional research consortium, and the Associate Program Director for the\u00a0University of Michigan\u2019s General Surgery Residency and the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. \r\n\r\nDr. George completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Michigan and then worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. He later completed his MD at the University of California San Francisco, his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a Trauma\/Surgical Critical Care fellowship at University of Washington\u2019s Harborview Hospital. He also has a Master\u2019s degree in Quantitative Assessment and Evaluation from the University of California Berkeley\u2019s School of Education. \r\n\r\nDr. George\u2019s primary academic focus is on operative performance assessment and bridging the gap between surgical education research and health services research.
