SUMMARY:Exhibition:Celebrating Science & Art
DESCRIPTION:The brilliantly colored images in this exhibit were taken in the course of scientific research\, and are beautiful in their detail\, form and symmetry. For each one\, an accompanying explanation describes its significance. The subjects of the images are cells\, tissues and organs\, from a wide variety of biological sources (plants\, worms\, fruit flies\, fish\, mice and yes\, even human brain). The colors are added by investigators\, to allow them to see the otherwise transparent tissues. By looking at these microscopic images\, you will learn about research into normal embryonic development as well as cutting-edge investigations into diseases such as basal cell carcinoma\, bipolar disease\, epilepsy and cancer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Innovations in Ornament
DESCRIPTION:This group show of jewelry and ornaments includes the work of Roger Martin\, who tackled the subject of a raven by relying on planes and shadow lines to imbue the surfaces of the bird with personality. Another one of the seven artists\, Lorraine Kolasa\, picked up the old fashioned art of tatting\, then cast tiny pieces of her handmade lace into sterling silver jewelry. Michael Nashef\, who spent half his life in war-torn Lebanon\, has created a series of innovative vessels and brooches. Other artists included in this exhibit are Kim Cridler\, Roger Smith\, Renee Zettle-Sterling and Ruth Taubman\, whose unmatched exuberance of color and 36 years of work and business innovation\, place her jewelry firmly on the national stage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Organic Fiction: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Hava Gurevich’s colorful abstractions feature botanical\, aquatic and microscopic motifs as she explores repeating patterns in nature. Blending images from the real world and her imagination\, Organic Fiction celebrates nature in all its beauty\, chaos and complexity. Hava Gurevich received a BFA in photography from U-M and an MFA in painting from Illinois State University. Her creative process begins with photographs and sketches of details in nature\, such as tree branches\, ice patterns\, twisted vines\, and delicate spring blossoms. These drawings contribute to her personal vocabulary of shapes and gestures\, and she often digitally combines them with older paintings to become starting points of new works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Deluge
DESCRIPTION:Five Channel Video Installation\n13 Minutes\, 27 Seconds.\n\nDeluge is a culmination of Mendel’s ten years of work on the Drowning World project\, shooting video and stills in thirteen different countries. It depicts a variety of individual stories\, positioned with a synchronous global narrative in a way that is both personally intimate and deeply political. In all his years of responding to floods and making many journeys he has shot a vast archive of video footage\, which is fully activated in this presentation for the first time.\n\nAbout Gideon Mendel and his Drowning World project:\nGideon Mendel came of age as a photographer in South Africa in the 1980’s and identified strongly as a ‘struggle photographer’. This marked him and his subsequent career has been notable for his engagement with three of the crucial political and social issues that have faced his generation. These are the struggle against apartheid\, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Climate Change.\n\nA leading contemporary photographer\, Gideon Mendel's intimate style of image making and long-term commitment to projects has earned him international recognition and many awards. He was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Prize 2015 and recently has won both the inaugural Jackson Pollock Prize for Creativity and the Greenpeace Photo Award 2016.\n\nHis on-going project ‘Drowning World\, explores the human dimension of climate change by focusing on floods across geographical and cultural boundaries. By highlighting the personal impact of flooding he evokes our vulnerability to global warming questioning our sense of stability in the world.\n\nThe work began in 2007\, when Mendel photographed floods in the UK and in India within weeks of each other. He was deeply struck by the contrasting impact of these events\, and the shared experiences of those affected.\n\nSince then he has endeavoured to travel to flood zones around the world visiting Haiti (2008)\, Pakistan (2010)\, Australia (2011)\, Thailand (2011)\, Nigeria (2012)\, Germany (2013)\, The Philippines (2013)\, The UK (2014)\, India (2014)\, Brazil (2015)\, Bangladesh (2015)\, the USA (2015 and 2017) and France (2016 and 2018).\n\nAs the work progressed photographing floods became both a literal and allegorical means of documenting the tension between the personal and the global effects of climate change. Each location added has intensified the narrative impact of the endeavour.\n\nDrowning World now consists of four parallel and connected narrative elements: Submerged Portraits\, Flood Lines\, Watermarks\, and Deluge.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Urban Biographies\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:Human beings are political animals\, said the Greek philosopher Aristotle: animals that live in the “polis\,” the Greek word for city. Over two thousand years later\, we are still political animals\, and the study of ancient cities is of abiding interest\, for our perceptions of the urban centers of the past continue to exert a powerful hold on modern culture. \n\nThis exhibition showcases three Classical cities where the University of Michigan sponsors field projects: Gabii in Italy\, Olynthos in Greece\, and Notion in Turkey. The archaeologists excavating these cities\, in collaboration with students and faculty from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, are comparing their findings to projects of urban rebuilding in contemporary Detroit\, asking two main questions: How do contemporary archaeological methods facilitate the study of both ancient and modern cities? And how can the study of the past help illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing Detroit today? \n\nLead Curator: Christopher Ratté\nCo-Curators: Lisa Nevett\, Nicola Terrenato\, and Kathy Velikov\n\nVisit the exhibition website: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/urban-biographies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Po-Ling Loh
DESCRIPTION:We discuss two recent results concerning disease modeling on networks. The\ninfection is assumed to spread via contagion (e.g.\, transmission over the edges of\nan underlying network). In the first scenario\, we observe the infection status of\nindividuals at a particular time instance and the goal is to identify a confidence\nset of nodes that contain the source of the infection with high probability. We\nshow that when the underlying graph is a tree with certain regularity properties\nand the structure of the graph is known\, confidence sets may be constructed with\ncardinality independent of the size of the infection set. In the scenario\, the goal is\nto infer the network structure of the underlying graph based on knowledge of the\ninfected individuals. We develop a hypothesis test based on permutation testing\,\nand describe a sufficient condition for the validity of the hypothesis test based on\nautomorphism groups of the graphs involved in the hypothesis test.\nThis is joint work with Justin Khim (UPenn).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Elements of Business Sustainability Series: Cultivating Detroit: Mobilizing Diverse Entrepreneurs for Good Food
DESCRIPTION:In promoting social change\, organizations benefit from diverse membership\, yet diversity is difficult to achieve. Using data collected over a 15-month field study\, Professors Sara Soderstrom and Kate Heinze examined how a social movement organization (SMO)\, FoodLab\, mobilized a diverse collective of entrepreneurs\, aligned with the good food movement. FoodLab articulated a vision for an imagined future of a diverse good food economy in Detroit that aligned movement goals and entrepreneurs’ livelihoods. This vision supported diverse recruitment\, and the organization facilitated dialogue among participants. These structured interactions with norms of questions\, stories\, and respectful interaction\, helped build collective identity and foster diverse collective action. FoodLab’s substantive commitment to diversity enabled growth of the diverse collective through social networks.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Linocuts by Meredith Stern
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 1948\, in the aftermath of the devastation of World War II\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a roadmap to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The complete Declaration is comprised of a Preamble and 30 Articles. In honor of the 60th anniversary of this document\, we are exhibiting 14 Articles in the form of illustrated prints by Meredith Stern. These contemporary prints are intended both to make people aware of this rights roadmap and to show its urgent relevance in our contemporary political moment.\n\nMeredith Stern is an artist currently based in Providence\, RI\, and a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to social\, environmental\, and political engagement. Stern created a total of 28 sets of these linocut prints in 2017\, of which one is held in the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE 285 Undergraduate Seminar Series - MarCO
DESCRIPTION:Eleven days ago\, the two MarCO spacecraft made history by flying by Mars in support of the InSight lander’s entry-descent-and-landing activities. These two small spacecraft – the smallest ever to fly interplanetary – were not required for InSight success\, but provided a real-time relay of EDL data\, allowing controllers to observe the “seven minutes of terror” 150 million kilometers away. During this seminar\, we’ll discuss the road to flight for the MarCO spacecraft\, the lessons learned along the way\, and how Michigan components made their way to Mars.\n\nAbout the Speaker...\nDr. Andrew Klesh is chief engineer of the MarCO interplanetary mission\, consisting of the first two CubeSats flying beyond Earth. He also serves as technical lead of the Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration team\, working to explore the ice-water interface in arctic\, antarctic\, and glacial terrain. Previously\, he served as PI for the INSPIRE interplanetary CubeSats\, and was postdoc & chief engineer of U. Michigan’s Radio Aurora Explorer CubeSat project. Prior to JPL\, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at JAXA supporting the Hayabusa and Ikaros missions. He has multiple degrees from the University of Michigan (BSE EE\, BSE Aero\, MSE Aero\, MEng Space Systems\, PhD Aero) and volunteers as part of the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory. As a lecturer at Caltech and adjunct professor at Arizona State University\, he teaches Space Systems\, Electronics for Space Applications\, and Macgyver Engineering.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Value of Values for Institutional Theory
DESCRIPTION:Though values were once the central focus of institutional theory\, they are now a latent\, marginalized and dimly understood element of a much larger and more complex perspective. The present paper is a response to this curious and ironic situation. In the effort to refocalize values and foment a new wave of value-centric institutional scholarship\, our review addresses three more specific questions. The first concerns the nature\, origin and functions of values themselves. The second concerns values’ relationship to other institutional elements and their place within the broader institutional landscape. The third concerns “the value of values” and the particular ways in which they can inform and enrich institutional research. Our review addresses these questions both by “reaching back” into the institutional tradition and by “reaching across” into the broader and recently resurgent sociological literature on values. We close by discussing a number of promising directions for future research.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: The Use and Misuse of Coordinated Punishments
DESCRIPTION:Communication facilitates cooperation by allowing deviators to be widely punished. This paper explores how players might misuse these communication systems to threaten one another and identifies conditions under which communication improves cooperation despite these threats. A principal plays trust games with a sequence of short-lived agents who communicate. An agent who shirks can still demand pay by threatening to report that the principal deviated. We show how these threats can destroy cooperation. Cooperation is partially restored if there are public signals of the agents' efforts or the principal's transfers\, or if the principal has ongoing bilateral relationships with each agent.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department of Performing Arts Technology Seminar: Lyn Goeringer
DESCRIPTION:Lyn Goeringer is a sound artist and performer who makes her own instruments and multimedia pieces that focus on the unusual and everyday within sound\, video\, and electronics. She currently teaches composition at Michigan State University at the College of Music and Film Studies. In this talk\, Goeringer will discuss her approaches to performance and instrument design\, considering the ways that the materials used in both the production and performance of electronic music impact implied meaning and interpretations of the sonic artworks themselves. Starting with the idea of the political everyday\, which incorporates the ideas that the world around us impacts the meaning we construct\, Goeringer will talk about several of her instruments including HIDden\, an instrument that is made from streetlights\, her work with EMF and sound\, as well as her most recent work that uses bone as both sounding object and as a housing for electronic instruments and installation components.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Testing UV-B Radiation as a Proposed Driver of the End-Permian Biotic Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The ozone layer plays a vital role in intercepting harmful solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) from reaching Earth’s surface. However\, its effectiveness in doing so has fluctuated in the past and little is known of the impacts of a thinning ozone layer on vegetation. Anticipating potential consequences in the future depends on understanding time intervals with heightened UV stress in the past. The largest mass extinction in history at the end of the Permian Period (~252 million years ago) may have been one of these time intervals. Plant fossil records from this crisis show two odd features worldwide. Many pollen grains produced by vanishing woodland seed plants were malformed\, and lycopsids spread their spores frequently as unseparated clusters of four. Heightened UV-B exposure was hypothesized to have caused these abnormalities. Compounds produced by the largest volcanic province in history\, the Siberian Traps\, likely caused prolonged or frequent deterioration of the ozone shield. Using the results of UV-B radiation experiments I will show that the collapse of the ozone layer could explain the abnormalities and extinction patterns in plants observed during the end-Permian biotic crisis.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:“4D MAPPING OF SPATIOFUNCTIONAL ENZYME DROPLETS IN LIVING CELLS”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The cytoplasmic\, rate-determining enzymes in glucose metabolism are spatially organized into multienzyme assemblies in various sizes in human cells. They are proposed to shunt metabolic flux from glycolysis to anabolic biosynthetic pathways. However\, how the formation of the enzyme assemblies and their sub-cellular locations in the cells are associated with their metabolic functions are largely unknown. In this work\, we show that the enzyme assemblies in glucose metabolism are formed by liquid phase separation in a pathway specific manner. With 4D imaging using the home-built lattice light sheet microscope\, we observe that the membraneless assemblies present liquid droplet properties. Moreover\, we reveal that significant numbers of the enzyme assemblies are in proximity with mitochondria. We also monitor the reversible formation and spatial organization of the enzyme assembly upon the inhibition of mitochondrial metabolism. Our results shed light on how the enzyme assemblies are formed and positioned near cellular organelles to locally and efficiently orchestrate their metabolic functions. We envision that the presented “spatiofunctional” characteristics of the enzyme assemblies in glucose metabolism are an unprecedented starting point for mapping 4D functional metabolic network in live cells.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquium: Anna Barnett\, University of Sussex\, UK
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Space: The Ultimate Nuclear Measurements Laboratory\n\nABSTRACT: Whether it be for understanding distant astrophysical phenomena or measuring the elemental composition of planetary surfaces\, radiation detection is critical for the advancement of space science. However\, much traditional instrumentation is either too great in mass\, temperature sensitive\, or prone to degradation for it to be used efficiently in space for such purposes. Researchers working in the Space Research Group at University of Sussex (a research intensive university nestled in rolling hills of England’s South Downs National Park) are developing novel materials and instrumentation which can withstand the extreme environments of space\, and potentially provide answers to many of the most pressing questions in space science today\, such as how did the solar system form\, and where can life arise in planetary systems. Along the way\, they are also applying space research to terrestrial challenges such as ocean mining\, detection of nuclear materials\, monitoring of tribological wear in oil lubricated machinery\, and the development of radioisotope microbatteries. This talk will introduce the importance of radiation detection in space science and detail the current state of the art in semiconductor radiation detection materials (particularly III-Vs) at Britain’s leading academic institute for novel radiation measurement instrumentation.\n\nBIO: Anna M. Barnett is Professor of Space Research and Director of the Space Research Group in the School of Engineering and Informatics at University of Sussex\, UK. She is an experimental physicist with interests in detector physics and instrumentation for space science and extreme terrestrial environments (high temperature\, intense radiation). Her research portfolio covers: space systems\; attitude determination systems and GPS-denied environment navigation instrumentation\; instrumentation for underwater vehicles for ocean mining\; fundamental compound semiconductor material and device research\, with particular emphasis on radiation interactions and single photon noise processes\; instrumentation for space plasma physics\, X-ray astronomy\, and planetary science\; radioisotope microbatteries\; liquid contamination monitoring systems\; radiological and nuclear material interdiction systems\; and more. As of November 2018\, Prof. Barnett holds personal research funding totaling ~$3M in value. She is particularly well known for her expertise in the characterization of novel semiconductor materials (e.g. GaAs\, AlGaAs\, AlInP\, GaInP\, cubic-GaN\, SiC\, Diamond) for photon counting spectroscopy of X-rays and gamma-rays\, and particle counting spectroscopy of electrons and beta particles. Upon promotion to her current position as Professor of Space Research at 33 years of age in February 2018\, Prof. Barnett became the youngest person to have ever held a Professorial Chair at University of Sussex. In 2016\, Prof. Barnett won the prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize in Engineering. She was also awarded the 2016 University of Sussex Emerging Researcher award for her contributions towards “Improved spacecraft guidance\, navigation\, and control through the understanding of light\". Prof. Barnett obtained her PhD (without corrections) in 2012 at University of Leicester's world-renowned Space Research Centre (part of Dept. Physics and Astronomy) where she was awarded the College of Science and Engineering 2012 PhD prize for \"Exceptional Merit in the Conduct and Outcome of Research\" and was also invited to give a Graduate School Doctoral Prize Inaugural Lecture in 2013. As well as being highly active in research\, Prof. Barnett is actively commercializing many of the technologies underpinned by her work\, and she enjoys collaborating and consulting for numerous commercial organizations in the UK and overseas.

SUMMARY:Performance:For the Record
DESCRIPTION:For the Record is an original work written by Broadway performer and University of Michigan faculty member Geoff Packard. Runyonland Productions has been workshopping the show with the playwright\, and this production will be the piece’s world premiere. Taking place in the Duderstadt Video Studio\, For the Record explores the world of a young man trying to escape the history of his family\, haunted by the genetic disposition of Huntington’s disease. He learns no matter how hard you try\, you can’t escape what’s written in your DNA.\n\nGeoff is delighted to be debuting the production in Ann Arbor with Runyonland\, stating\,\n\n“I believe that Thomas Laub and his Runyonland Productions\, are an exciting blend of positive energy\, tenacity\, and grit--all things necessary when bringing new works into the world. In the theatre\, we ought to have a nurturing environment for the often-painful process of creating new works. I am optimistic that both the immense talent of its artists\, and the intelligence of its audiences\, will make Ann Arbor a nurturing environment for artistic achievement and a great incubator for new work.”

SUMMARY:Performance:The Grand Duke
DESCRIPTION:In the mythical duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig\, a troupe of actors plan to depose the Grand Duke\, Rudolph. By the dictates of an obscure local law\, Ludwig\, the troupe’s principal comedian\, is able to achieve this end simply by drawing a higher card in a ‘duel’ with his royal rival. However\, Ludwig is then required to assume not only the trappings of royalty\, but also all of its various obligations\, including contracted engagements to marry three different women – much to the chagrin of his fiancé\, Lisa. Hilarity ensues\, until at the last moment a startling discovery is made\, sending everything topsy-turvy all over again.

SUMMARY:Performance:Twelfth Night
DESCRIPTION:A romantic comedy by William Shakespeare\n\nDepartment of Theatre & Drama\nDirected by Daniel Cantor.\n\nShakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy\, Twelfth Night follows separated twins Sebastian and Viola. Finding herself shipwrecked off Illyria and believing her brother dead\, Viola disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. The Duke believes himself in love with Olivia\, but Olivia is swiftly falling for the disguised Viola. In the meantime\, Viola is developing feelings for the Duke. When Sebastian (who is not dead) arrives in Illyria\, confusion reigns supreme. Unrequited love and mistaken identities abound as the foursome journey towards a joyous discovery. \n\nTwelfth Night\, written around 1601\, is one of Shakespeare’s richest plays. The show takes its title from the revelry following the twelfth day of Christmas\, bringing together romance and music in a tale full of folly (it is also the day the first production was performed). One of the most “modern” of Shakespeare’s plays\, the comedy’s themes about the fickleness of love\, the arbitrary nature of relationships\, and the re-thinking of sexuality all conspire with brilliant verse to push boundaries and look at the world upside down. Twelfth Night explores not only the nature of desire\, but how perception is clouded by desire\, and in turn\, explores the very nature of perception itself. What is the disguise and what is the truth\, is never absolutely certain\, and often in the eye of the beholder (hence the play’s subtitle\, What You Will). As Feste\, the play’s clown says\, “that which is so is not so.” The production puts a twentieth-century twist on the story\, framing the action in a world inflected by the delightful sites and sounds of the 1930s.\n\n*Twelfth Night runs approximately three hours including one intermission.
