As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects; bilingualism in Egypt; books read by the Egyptian monks; and the works of Shenoute the Great, the most important author of Coptic literature.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the G\u00f6ttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Largely shielded by the internal geomagnetic field, only a small fraction of the protons and electrons make it to the near-Earth space - but those that do, have a strong impact on our electromagnetic and radiation environment. As the society increasingly relies on space-based assets, it has increasingly important to develop preditions of high-energy (keV to MeV) particle fluxes in the near-Earth space. This talk discusses the effects of Coronal Mass Ejections from the Sun as they reach the geospace: The bright auroral displays, ground currents harmful to power networks and other infrastructure, and the radiation belt electrons in regions where the navigation and communication satellites reside. These traits can be acquired and stably maintained by either genetic or epigenetic means. It is now clear that the cancer genome and epigenome influence each other in multiple ways. For example, mutation of the IDH1 gene results in the accumulation of a novel oncometabolite, 2-hydroxyglutarate, which is associated with an extensive CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) in glioblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia. As part of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project, we performed an analysis of DNA methylation alterations in more than 10,000 primary human cancer specimens spanning 33 cancer types. We found that predisposition to DNA methylation gains (hypermethylation) was linked primarily to polycomb repressive complex occupancy in precursor tissues, consistent with an epigenetic block to cellular differentiation as an early or even initiating event in carcinogenesis. On the other hand, widespread loss of DNA methylation (hypomethylation) is linked to replication-associated progressive erosion of DNA methylation at late-replicating, lamina-associated domains in the genome located at the nuclear periphery. We show that this phenomenon can be used to develop a molecular mitotic clock.
