SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Impressions in Pastel
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RENEWED ACTIVISM FOR THE LABOR MOVEMENT: THE URGENCY OF YOUNG WORKER ENGAGEMENT
DESCRIPTION:Maite Tapia is Assistant Professor at Michigan State University’s School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Her research centers on the organizing strategies of trade unions and community organizations in the U.S. and Europe\, and on work\, migration\, and the concept of intersectionality. She has published her work in several academic journals and is co-editor of the 2014 Cornell University Press book\, \"Mobilizing Against Inequality: Unions\, Immigrant Workers\, and the Crisis of Capitalism\".\n\nProf. Tapia will discuss a multi-year study on young workers and their level of involvement in the labor movements of four countries: France\, Germany\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. Results suggest that two key variables affect involvement level: The openness and encouragement of unions to the leadership development of young workers\, and the persistence and creativity of groups of young workers in promoting their own engagement. Young workers embody labor’s potential for movement-building and for resistance to authoritarianism and populism.\n\nThis is the second of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 17\, 2019. The subject is: Human Thriving in the New World of Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paul Rand: The Designer's Task
DESCRIPTION:Paul Rand's visionary conceptions of brand identity \nPaul Rand was a giant of American design\, whose influential career spanned the second half of the twentieth century. His visionary and pithy conceptions of corporate and non-profit brand identities—though often graphically minimal—embody the artist’s complex philosophy\, interest in modernist aesthetics\, and singular wit. This exhibition features posters\, book covers\, and packaging designs from Rand’s beginnings as a pro bono designer for arts and culture publications like Direction magazine to his decades of crafting trailblazing corporate design for companies such as IBM. Paul Rand: The Designer’s Task affords viewers the opportunity to explore the genre of graphic design within the context of the art museum and examine how Rand’s intellectual process and impact on visual culture developed over time.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Proof: The Ryoichi Excavations
DESCRIPTION:A narrative of Ryoichi's archaeological work \nThe story of Japanese archaeologist Ryoichi and evidence of his worldwide excavations are explored by Patrick Nagatani in this series of photographs. Nagatani presents a narrative of Ryoichi’s archaeological work\, supported by images of excavation sites\, unearthed artifacts\, and Ryoichi’s own journal pages. According to the photographs\, Ryoichi discovered evidence of an automobile culture buried at sites across several continents: Stonehenge\, the Grand Canyon\, and a necropolis in China. This provocative and playful series compels viewers to reflect on how photographs and institutions\, such as museums\, shape our knowledge of the past and present.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:A serene and surreal constellation \nTristin Lowe’s Under the Influence is a serene and surreal constellation of three interconnected works: Argonaut II\, an oversized reflective door that leads viewers into the installation\, Lunacy\, a twelve-and-half-foot-diameter facsimile of the moon\, and Visither I\, a blue neon-light sculpture resembling a nomadic visiting spaceship. Lunacy\, the central component of the installation\, is constructed of 490 square feet of white felt pieced together by hand and stretched around an inflatable sphere. The surface is branded with craters and other markers that meticulously render the moon’s topography.  The installation creates a visceral feeling of time having stopped\, as if the cosmos has magically been paused—a sensation that is both captivating and strange. The unlikely experience of encountering the moon at this scale deepens this bewilderment. Under the Influence is a hypnotic work with a conceptual openness that rebuffs obvious narrative or meaning. In the artist’s own words\, “there’s a bit of the supernatural or otherworldly at work.”\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Justin Taraska\, Ph.D.\, National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe plasma membrane separates the cell’s interior from the outside world. The exchange of information and material across this barrier is regulated by a multitude of channels\, transporters\, receptors\, and trafficking organelles. Mapping the structure and dynamics of the plasma membrane is key to understanding how cells function. Electron microscopy can produce high resolution images of the structure of the plasma membrane. It has been challenging\, however\, to identify proteins within these samples. Super-resolution localization microscopy can image specific fluorescently-labeled molecules with better than 20 nm precision. We recently developed a correlative super-resolution light and platinum replica EM method (CLEM) that couples these complementary methods to produce images where identified proteins are mapped within the dense structural context of the cell at the nanoscale. This correlative method is uniquely suited to map the nanometer-scale molecular organization of the plasma membrane and associated organelles. Using this CLEM method\, we studied 19 key proteins involved in clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Our data provide a comprehensive molecular architecture of endocytic vesicles. We discover that key endocytic proteins distribute into three distinct spatial zones: inside\, outside\, and at the edge of the clathrin coat in human cells. The presence and amount of many factors within these zones change during organelle maturation. We propose that the formation and curvature of single clathrin-coated vesicles is driven by the recruitment\, re-organization\, and loss of proteins within these three partitioned nanoscale zones during endocytosis.\n\nLunch will be provided to attendees.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Linocuts by Meredith Stern
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 1948\, in the aftermath of the devastation of World War II\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a roadmap to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The complete Declaration is comprised of a Preamble and 30 Articles. In honor of the 60th anniversary of this document\, we are exhibiting 14 Articles in the form of illustrated prints by Meredith Stern. These contemporary prints are intended both to make people aware of this rights roadmap and to show its urgent relevance in our contemporary political moment.\n\nMeredith Stern is an artist currently based in Providence\, RI\, and a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to social\, environmental\, and political engagement. Stern created a total of 28 sets of these linocut prints in 2017\, of which one is held in the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chair's Distinguished Lecture Series - What Can the Aerospace Field Do About Its Diversity Problem?
DESCRIPTION:Ken Powell\nArthur F. Thurnau Professor and DEI Faculty Liaison\nAerospace Engineering\, UM\n\nThe other talks this semester will be based on research in Aerospace Sciences and Engineering. This talk is based on research in the Social Sciences - particularly Psychology\, Sociology\, Economics - and how it applies to education and careers in aerospace engineering.\n\nFor the past five years\, I have been part of a group of Michigan professors who read this social science literature\, and meet to discuss its implications on academic careers - teaching\, research\, service and hiring of faculty. We also give talks about why and how to improve diversity in faculty hiring to faculty throughout the university\, department chairs and deans\, and faculty at other universities.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present some classical and recent social science research about issues that affect our ability to hire and retain a diverse and excellent faculty\, particularly in STEM fields\, and especially in aerospace engineering. Topics will include implicit bias\, stereotype threat\, accumulation of disadvantage\, and some of the steps we are taking as a university to improve the composition of the faculty. I will also present data about the demographics of the aerospace field\, and give you some strategies for being a part of the much-needed solution to Aerospace's diversity challenges.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nProfessor Powell is a member and past director of the W. M. Keck Foundation Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory\, and a co-founder and co-director of the Center for Space Environment Modeling and the the Center for Radiative Shock Hydrodynamics. At the undergraduate level\, he teaches freshman computing\, compressible flow\, aerodynamics and aircraft design\; at the graduate level\, he teaches aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. His research interests include: algorithm development for fluid dynamics\, aerodynamics and plasmadynamics\; and the application of computational methods to problems in aerodynamics\, aeroelasticity\, fluid dynamics and space environment/space weather. His articles appear in Journal of Fluid Mechanics\, Journal of Computational Physics\, and Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics\, among others. He is also a co-author of Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics. He has received a number of awards for his research\, including a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award\, and a number of awards for his teaching\, including the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship. He is married to Susanne Maria Krummel\; they are the proud parents of Jasmine (25)\, Ryan (22)\, and Nicole (19).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Dirac Electrons on the Kagome Lattice
DESCRIPTION:The kagome lattice is a two-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles known as a platform for exotic quantum magnetic states. Theoretical work has predicted that the kagome lattice may also host exotic Dirac electronic states including those with non-trivial topology. We here present our recent work in conducting\, layered kagome materials in exploring these Dirac-like states\, particularly in systems with magnetic order. We describe observations massive Dirac states and associated Berry curvature induced transport. We also demonstrate the detection of these states from de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and their modification in magnetic field. Finally\, we discuss the promise for these materials in terms of realizing robust time-reversal-breaking topological phases.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dissertation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Nineteenth-Century Forum for a discussion of English PhD candidate Ross Martin's dissertation introduction: \"American Demonology after the Ancients.\"\n\nAbstract: My dissertation introduction\, \"American Demonology after the Ancients\,\" follows the Demonic as a thread of interest traversing the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Margaret Fuller\, Henry David Thoreau\, and Herman Melville. By Demonic\, I mean a primal phenomenon which manifests itself in ontological contradiction as something. (In Emerson\, the something is Tragic art\; in Fuller\, it is Leila\; in Thoreau\, it is the arrowhead\; in Melville\, it is the whale.) The ontological paradox through which the Demonic manifests an identity—unity and variety—is not resolved. Rather\, by disclosing itself (as a third estate of being) in an insurmountable contrast\, the Demonic stages an upheaval in thinking whereby pure difference is affirmed. By inciting affirmation in the context of (Antebellum) Romantic American literature\, this account of the Demonic entails the overturning of Platonic demonology\, with its negative relation to life. I thus trace two ontological perspectives\, the negative and the affirmative\, and the associated ethical orientations in the register of demonism. But by reversing Platonism through demonology\, American writers imperil the logics dependent upon it\, including dialectics and the univocity underlying recent criticism. For these reasons\, the shadow discourse that I follow inverts the status of thought and makes Emerson’s seemingly naïve proclamation in Nature (1836)\, that America is a place for “new thoughts\,” a completely serious claim.\n\n Key names: Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Margaret Fuller\, Henry David Thoreau\, Herman Melville\, Heraclitus\, Socrates\, Plato\, Aristotle\, Baruch Spinoza\, Emanuel Swedenborg\, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, Friedrich Nietzsche\, Martin Heidegger\, and Gilles Deleuze. \nKey terms: demonology\, affirmation\, fate\, and rebirth. \nKey disciplinary interests: American literature\, Romanticism\, ecology\, animal studies\, comparative literature\, philosophy\, and classics. \n\nTo RSVP and request a copy of Ross's introduction please email Evan Radeen (eradeen@umich.edu).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Metabolomics: Do you know what you (or your cells) are really eating?
DESCRIPTION:The Taubman Technology Talks series kicks off its 2019 season with “Metabolomics: Do you know what you (or your cells) are really eating?” featuring Taubman Institute Director Charles Burant\, MD\, PhD. \nAll are welcome January 10 from 5-6 pm at the Danto Auditorium inside the Frankel CVC for the lecture plus Q&A\, followed by a reception and light refreshments. Attendance is free but if possible\, please register at our Eventbrite site. \nMetabolomics is the large-scale study of small molecules\, commonly known as metabolites\, within cells\, biofluids\, tissues or organisms. Examples of metabolites are glucose in the metabolism of sugars and starches\, amino acids in the biosynthesis of proteins\, and squalene in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Collectively\, these small molecules and their interactions within a biological system are known as the metabolome. Metabolomics is now an integral part of the ‘omics analysis and can provide unique information in a broad array of biological systems.

SUMMARY:Performance:Three Women & The Truth: M Gauthier\, E Gilkyson\, G Peters
DESCRIPTION:Announcement: \n\nDear Friends\,\n\n I am so sorry I won’t be able to get on a plane today and play these shows with my wonderful 3WATT friends Gretchen Peters and Mary Gauthier. Last night at 2 a.m. I rolled over and felt a stabbing pain in my upper right torso. Things went downhill from there into full blown shingles by dawn\, the kind that never erupt on the surface but stay under your skin\, causing agonizing nerve pain. Yikes!\n\nThe good news is the show will go on in grand style-I know Mary and Gretchen will kill it as they always do-two of my favorite songwriters and performers in the world\, both of them Grammy nominated and at the top of their game. And if that ain’t enough Austin’s biggest buzz\, singer-songwriter Jaimee Harris will be on board to play her heart out as well. Barry Walsh will also be joining Mary and Gretchen on piano at the Ark in Ann Arbor and at Chicago City Winery - making for one great night of music.\n\nI’m sure you will enjoy this show\, and please know I will be back around as soon as I am able.\n\nThank you!\n\nEliza Gilkyson\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nEliza Gilkyson\n\n \n\nTwice Grammy Nominated folksinger Eliza Gilkyson has just released her 20th album\, Secularia\, a collection of songs old and new that reflect her ongoing search for meaningful spirituality without the constraints of traditional religious belief systems\, replacing dominant ideology with a more inclusive perspective that embraces compassion\, self-awareness and respect for the natural world in a culture she feels is “wavering between collapse and reinvention”. Produced by her son\, Cisco Ryder\, (Nocturne Diaries\, Roses at the End of Time\, Red Horse)\, with a spare urban approach\, the recording features songs of grief\, gratitude and wonder\, a call for accountability and a true moral compass for these divisive times.\n\n \n\n“Secularia is a series of poems and hymns\, deeply spiritual songs that praise the wonder and beauty of the world\, that lament its destruction\, and that celebrate the joy of the mystery that lies behind its wild wonder.”\n\n --- No Depression\n\n***\n\n \n\nGretchen Peters \n\n \n\nFor two decades\, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell\, who called her \"a songwriter and a poet (who) sings as beautifully as she writes” Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James\, Bonnie Raitt\, The Neville Brothers\, Patty Loveless\, George Strait\, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill. In 2015\, The Telegraph (UK) named her one of the greatest 60 female singer-songwriters of all time.\n\n \n\n“…songs that manage\, with deft use of language\, to cram a whole epic into three minutes. Astonishingly good writing.” – Pop Matters\n\n \n\n***\n\n“With songwriting as powerful as hers\, there’s no need to go looking for qualifiers. She’s a unique\, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there’s never a surplus of those.”
— Randy Lewis\, Los Angeles Time\n\n \n\nThe Associated Press named Mary Gauthier as one of the best songwriters of her generation. Her songs have been recorded by dozens of artists\, including Jimmy Buffett\, Blake Shelton\, Tim McGraw\, Bettye Lavette Mike Farris\, Kathy Mattea\, Bobby Bare\, Amy Helm and Candi Staton\, and have appeared extensively in Film and Television\, most recently on Yellowstone. Her album\, Filth and Fire (2002) was named Best Independent CD of the year by the New York Times\, and Mary was signed to Universal Lost Highway. Her following 5 records were listed in both the LA Times and NY Times top three releases of the year. She was awarded New Artist of the year by The Americana Music Association in 2005\, and her record Mercy Now was named in the top 5 records of the decade by No Depression magazine. Her most recent release\, Rifles & Rosary Beads ( a collection of sons co-written with wounded veterans) was nominated for 2018’s record of the year by the Americana Music Association as well she was nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for Best Folk Recording category.\n\nThree Women
