Combining a masterful use of metal and textile techniques\, Nahabetian carefully constructs objects that simultaneously harness light while projecting complex linear shadows. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Mystery Train: Oil on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Steeped in Whimsy: Ceramic Teapots
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. In addition to participating in art exhibits and juried art shows\, she has also created commissioned works in glass mosaics as well as a number of large custom ceramic tile art installations.

DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a platform to begin understanding the effects of rising sea levels along the coasts of Indonesia\, Bangladesh\, The Netherlands\, Italy and the United States.\n\nBy the end of the century oceans are predicted to rise between .3 and 2.5 meters\, which will result in major flooding in coastal cities around the world. The Sinking Cities Project aims to document this inundation through the stories of residents and the changing landscape of their cities.\n\nThis photo and video exhibit was produced by Marcin Szczepanski\, visual communications director at Michigan Engineering\, and Frank Sedlar\, Michigan Engineering alumnus.\n\nJoin us for an exhibit opening event on November 16th\, 4:00-7:00 p.m.\, in the Clark Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit\, featuring collections preserved at the Clements\, highlights the first-hand accounts of American soldiers serving in the Great War in 1917-18. Through their handwritten letters\, death reports\, postcards\, photographs\, and objects\, glimpse the day-to-day lives\, longings\, and horrific realities of war they experienced while fighting “Over There” on the Western Front. This project aligns with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that brought their fighting to an end on November 11\, 1918.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibition: The Smell of Lint and Frost
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Youngblood is a Detroit-based artist trained and working in a variety of media disciplines including fiber and clay. Recent work is based on drawing/mark making\, with a developing body of photographic work. Both consider themes relating to the passage of time\, but in ways particular the each medium.\n\nYoungblood earned a BFA in ceramics is from The University of Michigan\, School of Art (now The Stamps School of Art & Design) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art working with Katherine McCoy.\n\nSince returning to Detroit after living and working in New York City\, Philadelphia\, and other cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey\, and teaching at a range of colleges and universities\, Youngblood now maintains a full-time studio practice. Her art is exhibited locally and nationally\, and is represented in both private and public collections.\n\nThe Opening Reception for the Artist will take place on Wednesday\, January 16 from 4-6pm. Refreshments will be served\, and Elizabeth will give a Q&A at approx. 4:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Nagatani presents a narrative of Ryoichi’s archaeological work\, supported by images of excavation sites\, unearthed artifacts\, and Ryoichi’s own journal pages. According to the photographs\, Ryoichi discovered evidence of an automobile culture buried at sites across several continents: Stonehenge\, the Grand Canyon\, and a necropolis in China. The presentation will highlight applications of one class of smart\nmaterials\, shape memory alloys\, in improving the performance of structures\nsubjected to earthquake loading. Shape memory alloys belong to a class of shape\nmemory materials which can undergo large deformations while reverting back to\ntheir original\, undeformed shape. This unique property has led to the development\nof numerous applications in the biomedical\, aerospace\, and commercial industry. A\nmulti-scale and multi-disciplinary approach is taken to explore the potential use of\nthese systems for applications in earthquake engineering.\n\nReginald DesRoches is the Dean of William and Stephanie Sick of Engineering of Rice University.

DESCRIPTION:A serene and surreal constellation \nTristin Lowe’s Under the Influence is a serene and surreal constellation of three interconnected works: Argonaut II\, an oversized reflective door that leads viewers into the installation\, Lunacy\, a twelve-and-half-foot-diameter facsimile of the moon\, and Visither I\, a blue neon-light sculpture resembling a nomadic visiting spaceship. Lunacy\, the central component of the installation\, is constructed of 490 square feet of white felt pieced together by hand and stretched around an inflatable sphere. The surface is branded with craters and other markers that meticulously render the moon’s topography.  The installation creates a visceral feeling of time having stopped\, as if the cosmos has magically been paused—a sensation that is both captivating and strange. The unlikely experience of encountering the moon at this scale deepens this bewilderment. Under the Influence is a hypnotic work with a conceptual openness that rebuffs obvious narrative or meaning. In the artist’s own words\, “there’s a bit of the supernatural or otherworldly at work.”\n\n

DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 1948\, in the aftermath of the devastation of World War II\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a roadmap to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The complete Declaration is comprised of a Preamble and 30 Articles. In honor of the 60th anniversary of this document\, we are exhibiting 14 Articles in the form of illustrated prints by Meredith Stern. These contemporary prints are intended both to make people aware of this rights roadmap and to show its urgent relevance in our contemporary political moment.\n\nMeredith Stern is an artist currently based in Providence\, RI\, and a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to social\, environmental\, and political engagement. Stern created a total of 28 sets of these linocut prints in 2017\, of which one is held in the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center.

DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: From Talkers to Readers: Developing a Reading Brain in Kindergarten\n\nAbstract:  A universal marker of proficient reading is print-speech neural convergence\, or the integration of visual and auditory language processing in the brain. How and when does this convergence emerge? What drives the development of the print-speech network\, setting the stage for successful reading acquisition in young children? \n\nIn this talk\, we will examine the relationship between spoken language proficiency and the emergence of print-speech convergence in beginning readers. fMRI neuroimaging of kindergarteners (ages 5-6)  demonstrates that print-speech convergence is preceded and predicted by language proficiency\, which in turn predicts reading ability one year later. These findings suggest that children’s language ability is a core mechanism guiding neural plasticity for learning to read. Results extend our understanding of brain development for literacy to the earliest stages of reading\, and bridge theoretical perspectives across developmental psychology\, education\, and neuroscience.\n\nBio: Rebecca is a 4th year doctoral candidate in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2013 with a degree in Philosophy\, Neuroscience & Psychology. While there\, she conducted research on language and social cognition in bilingual preschoolers. After graduating\, she taught with Teach for America\, where she saw her research interest in language development and bilingualism translated to the classroom context. She now works with Dr. Ioulia Kovelman\, as well as Fumiko Hoeft (NOTE: PRONOUNCED HAY-FT) at the University of Connecticut\, to understand language and literacy development in linguistically diverse youth.

DESCRIPTION:The Office of Student Conflict Resolution and Housing Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution are pleased to be hosting a dialogue in which we will look into the finer points of the portrayal of race in 21st-century media. Participants will have the chance to watch\, discuss\, and draw conclusions from several situations where racial identities intersect with conflict or illustrate broader trends from the real world. Student-led discussions will delve into the underlying themes that exist in TV shows and movies ranging from The Office to Grey's Anatomy. We hope to create constructive dialogue\, as well as potential solutions\, as we unravel the complex relationship between race and the media. Attendees will be treated to light refreshments and valuable conversations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: The Science of Earthquake Forecasts
DESCRIPTION:This talk reviews new ideas about earthquakes that we’ve learned at the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC)\, and where we’re headed next. \n\nThe danger and cost of earthquakes has focused public fear and research effort in California since long before the devastating 1906 San Francisco and 1933 Long Beach events. Precise earthquake prediction\, heralded as imminent in the 1970s\, has faltered\, maybe permanently\, but nevertheless there is progress. \n\nHosted at USC\, with 16 core institutions and more than 60 affiliated organizations\, SCEC involves more than 1000 quake cognoscenti. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation\, the United States Geological Survey\, and special projects with foundation and corporate partners. We are uncloaking the mysteries in plate tectonics\, the San Andreas fault system\, and how the ground is driven to shake. SCEC investigates all aspects of earthquakes from theoretical models through detailed observations to hazard maps. We foster collaboration among the fields of science and engineering research\, computer science\, communication and outreach to develop integrated research products used by various stakeholders. \n\nThe central point of this intense research\, and the result that most directly benefits those living in California\, is the improvement of maps of earthquake danger. We find the tectonic fault lines\, gauge their geological rates of motion\, and model their patterns of rupture and reloading in order to resolve the earthquakes we are likely to face. By simulating\, in the nation’s largest computers\, the trembling for millions of those earthquakes through high-fidelity models of the rocks just under our feet\, we are step-by-step wringing the uncertainty out of the nation’s earthquake hazard maps.\n\nWe are on the verge of making the hazard estimation process entirely physics-based - built on models with realistic patterns of fault slip on realistic fault surfaces\, accurate models of geological structure\, and with the latest models of earthquake cycles on fault systems. Some aspects of the old hazard maps are confirmed. Other aspects\, particularly the strength of the reverbera¬tions in the soft Los Angeles basin and its basin brothers across the state\, may have been underestimated. A few places are now assessed as safer than before\, but answers are not yet final. \n\nSCEC is allowing more apt emergency preparations and building and retrofitting laws\, and in the process giving us a deeper understanding of the physics of earthquakes and the geological evolution of the Southern California natural laboratory.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How to Make Causal Inferences Using Texts
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: New text-as-data techniques offer a great promise: the ability to discover\, measure\, and then utilize text-based variables for testing social science theories of interest from large collections of text. We introduce a conceptual framework for making causal inferences with text-based measures as either a treatment or outcome.  We argue that nearly all text-based causal inferences depend upon a latent representation of the text and provide a set of sufficient assumptions to identify causal effects when text is used as a treatment or outcome. We provide a framework to learn the latent representation---justifying the use of popular unsupervised methods such as topic modeling or principal component analysis---and then estimate causal effects with the same sample used to learn the latent representation. But estimating the latent representation\, we show\, creates new risks: we may introduce an identification problem or overfit. To address this problem we introduce a split-sample framework.  We apply our framework to study whether increasing the proportion of women on Congressional committees leads to more representation of women’s ideas during the legislative process and to assess how partisans respond to social media messages from President Trump.\n\nBio: Justin Grimmer is an associate professor of political science at Stanford University. His research examines how representation occurs in American politics using new statistical methods. His first book Representational Style in Congress: What Legislators Say and Why It Matters (Cambridge University Press\, 2013) shows how senators define the type of representation they provide constituents and how this affects constituents' evaluations. His second book The Impression of Influence: How Legislator Communication and Government Spending Cultivate a Personal Vote (Under Review\, with Sean J. Westwood and Solomon Messing) demonstrates how legislators ensure they receive credit for government actions. His work has appeared in the American Political Science Review\, American Journal of Political Science\, Journal of Politics\, Political Analysis\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, Regulation and Governance\, and Poetics. During the 2013-2014 academic year he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institute.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Seminar Title: \"Predicting RNA Structure with Physics and Sequence Comparison\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: RNA structure is hierarchical.  The primary structure is the sequence of nucleotides.  The secondary structure is the set of canonical (AU\, GC\, and GU) base pairs.  The tertiary structure is the three dimensional position of the atoms and the additional intramolecular contacts that mediate the fold.\n\nThe Mathews lab develops methods to predict both RNA secondary structure and tertiary structure.  In this talk\, I will introduce nearest neighbor parameters for estimating folding stability of secondary structures and dynamic programming algorithms that predict secondary structure.  I will then talk about new work in our lab to compare sequences to model conserved secondary structures.  We developed a new method\, called TurboFold\, which is able to rapidly refine predicted secondary structures using sequence comparison and rapidly refine sequence alignments using structure information.  I will also talk about new work to model RNA folding stability using molecular mechanics and 3D models.  We used umbrella sampling to estimate the unfolding free energy change differences for three stem-loop structures\, and we found good agreement with experiments.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nRecent theoretical explorations of music as affective labor in post-Fordist economic systems from Hardt and Negri provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between musicking and social\, political and economic systems. However\, these approaches are hampered by subsuming various forms of effort into a totalizing view of labor. I propose re-theorizing aesthetic affective work as distinct from generalized and flat considerations of labor\, thus bringing to light changes in economic and political systems of exchanges\, governance and control. Understanding musical effort as craftsmanship in relation to aesthetic affective work enable us to document the ways that changes from early to late capitalism in mediatized and mechanized forms of effort and compensation that are increasingly replacing aesthetic work with exploited forms of labor.\nTo illustrate the power of a theory of affective musical work\, I offer two seemingly quite different case studies. An effort-centered analysis of the Bach family’s musical activities in 17th - 18th century Western Europe illuminates significant economic and social changes that in turn shaped individual musical subjectivities\, as their musical output shaped society and economic treatment of musicians. The second case study examines various strategies over time of the Sesler family\, a Roman professional musician kin group from 1920s – 2010s in Serres\, Greece and Turkey. The purpose of these case studies is not to provide definitive insights into each of these areas\, but rather to suggest a theorization of affective work based on nuancing the categories of musical effort according to local concepts and evaluations. Such theoretical considerations would be applicable to and productive for divergent musical genres\, time periods and places.
