As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. His essays have appeared on Alternet, Salon, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, The Root, Black Commentator, BK Nation and Z Magazine among other popular, professional and scholarly journals.\r\n\r\nFrom 1999-2003, Wise was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute, in Nashville, and in the early \u201990s he was Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized for the purpose of defeating neo-Nazi political candidate, David Duke.\r\n\r\nWise has been featured in several documentaries, including the 2013 Media Education Foundation release, \u201cWhite Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America.\u201d The film, which he co-wrote and co-produced, has been called \u201cA phenomenal educational tool in the struggle against racism,\u201d and \u201cOne of the best films made on the unfinished quest for racial justice,\u201d by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva of Duke University, and Robert Jensen of the University of Texas, respectively. He also appeared alongside legendary scholar and activist, Angela Davis, in the 2011 documentary, \u201cVocabulary of Change.\u201d In this public dialogue between the two activists, Davis and Wise discussed the connections between issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and militarism, as well as inter-generational movement building and the prospects for social change.\r\n\r\nWise appears regularly on CNN and MSNBC to discuss race issues and was featured in a 2007 segment on 20\/20. He graduated from Tulane University in 1990 and received antiracism training from the People\u2019s Institute for Survival and Beyond, in New Orleans.\r\n\r\nJulia Putnam is a lifelong Detroiter. Her professional life began, unwittingly, when she was sixteen and the first young person to sign up for Detroit Summer, a youth volunteer organization begun by James and Grace Lee Boggs in 1992. Through this work, she realized her passion for community-building and nurturing youth voice and began a career in education. She taught for five years in Detroit, including serving as writer-in-residence for the InsideOut Literary Magazine program. She wrote a regular column on education (\u201cLearning for Life\u201d) for the Michigan Citizen, which has been required reading at major Michigan universities.\r\n\r\nIn 2008, she became part of the founding team for The James and Grace Lee Boggs School and has served as Principal since the school opened in 2013. Dr. Taylor will also share reflections about her recent study on the genomics of lead poisoning in Flint, MI. She was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by President Barack Obama, the highest honor awarded by the federal government to scientists and engineers, where she examines next-generation sequencing-environment interactions on blood pressure among African Americans. Her long-term goals are to develop nursing interventions to reduce and prevent -omic-environment risks that contribute to health disparities for common chronic conditions among underrepresented minority populations across the lifespan in the United States and vulnerable populations abroad. Noonan were there, too. \r\n\r\nThey will share their experiences at \u201cFighting for Our Rights: Three Young Women Facing Southern Racism in the 1960s.\u201d This 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Symposium is presented by the Department of History, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), and Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, with additional support from the Kalt Fund for African American and African History.\r\n\r\nBettie Mae Fikes was born in Selma, Alabama, and began singing gospel alongside her mother at age four. At sixteen she became a student leader for SNCC, eventually performing with the SNCC Freedom Singers. She was jailed for several weeks in 1963 for protesting during the voting rights struggle in Selma. Ms. Fikes has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival, and the Library of Congress, as well as performing for Democratic National Conventions in 1964 and 2004. She has performed with Joe Turner, Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins, Albert King, James Brown, Bob Dylan, and Mavis Staples, among others. \r\n\r\nMarilyn Lowen is a poet, writer, teacher and lifelong human rights worker. Born in Detroit in 1944, she began protesting racial injustice at eight years old. In high school she picketed Woolworth\u2019s in downtown Detroit in solidarity with SNCC sit-ins in 1960-1961. At Bennington College she started a civil rights group to support SNCC and the Northern Student Movement. She left school to work full time in the movement, first with NSM in Harlem, next in SNCC\u2019s Atlanta photo department, then moving to Tougaloo, Mississippi, to continue working with SNCC and the Child Development Group of Mississippi. She relocated to New York City in 1968, finishing her undergraduate and master's degrees, and teaching in the city\u2019s public schools at all levels.\r\n\r\nMartha Prescod Norman Noonan became involved in Students for a Democratic Society and SNCC while an undergraduate at the University of Michigan in the 1960s. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Noonan\u2019s family moved to Detroit after she graduated from high school. An undergraduate history major at the University of Michigan, she earned a master\u2019s degree in history from Wayne State University and for over two years pursued a PhD in history at U-M until a series of family emergencies interrupted her studies.
