SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Impressions in Pastel
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic
DESCRIPTION:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic\nJanuary 24\, 2019 – March 2\, 2019\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic\, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time\, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing)\, Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing)\, and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants\, caregivers\, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity\, critique power\, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher\, caretaker\, woodshop cleaner-upper\, lumber hauler\, community organizer\, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other\, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people\, mundane routines\, and a desire to build an inclusive society. Marisa Morán Jahn: the Mighty and the Mythic celebrates and acknowledges the daily struggles and minor victories of the 99 percent that make up the spirit of our society in the twenty-first century.\n\nArtwork by Marisa Morán Jahn: The Driver (detail)\, from MIRROR | MASK series\, featuring Darlyne Komukama. 2017\, Uganda

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paul Rand: The Designer's Task
DESCRIPTION:Paul Rand's visionary conceptions of brand identity \nPaul Rand was a giant of American design\, whose influential career spanned the second half of the twentieth century. His visionary and pithy conceptions of corporate and non-profit brand identities—though often graphically minimal—embody the artist’s complex philosophy\, interest in modernist aesthetics\, and singular wit. This exhibition features posters\, book covers\, and packaging designs from Rand’s beginnings as a pro bono designer for arts and culture publications like Direction magazine to his decades of crafting trailblazing corporate design for companies such as IBM. Paul Rand: The Designer’s Task affords viewers the opportunity to explore the genre of graphic design within the context of the art museum and examine how Rand’s intellectual process and impact on visual culture developed over time.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Proof: The Ryoichi Excavations
DESCRIPTION:A narrative of Ryoichi's archaeological work \nThe story of Japanese archaeologist Ryoichi and evidence of his worldwide excavations are explored by Patrick Nagatani in this series of photographs. Nagatani presents a narrative of Ryoichi’s archaeological work\, supported by images of excavation sites\, unearthed artifacts\, and Ryoichi’s own journal pages. According to the photographs\, Ryoichi discovered evidence of an automobile culture buried at sites across several continents: Stonehenge\, the Grand Canyon\, and a necropolis in China. This provocative and playful series compels viewers to reflect on how photographs and institutions\, such as museums\, shape our knowledge of the past and present.\n\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Alpine Yodeling in Chinese
DESCRIPTION:Yodeling is a distinctive mode of vocal performance\, one that flourished in the Alpine areas of Germany\, Austria and Switzerland\, and became a musical signature of the region. Since its adoption by American country music\, yodeling has become a world-wide phenomenon and can be heard in many kinds of global popular and fusion music. Yodeling techniques were not unknown in historical China\, but as a distinctive mode of vocal performance\, yodeling is a new phenomenon of fusion music in contemporary China. In this presentation\, Lu Tong will discuss his discovery of yodel\, his subsequent learning\, performance\, research\, and promotion of the practice. He will also perform to demonstrate his yodeling techniques and compositions.\n\nAbout the presenter:\n\nBorn in 1987\, LU Tong was formally trained as a pianist and vocalist at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music\, graduating in 2010. In 2006\, he discovered yodeling\, from since he has been actively studying and promoting it in China. He has become nationally recognized as the first Chinese yodeler\, who now professionally yodels\, composes yodeling works\, and gives lectures and recitals on the music practice.\n\n~ We serve light lunch! SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | Poetry\, Class\, and Politics: Making Haiku into “Literature” in Meiji Japan
DESCRIPTION:Known for its emphasis on nature and the seasons\, as well as its accessibility and broad appeal\, haiku is now one of Japan’s best-known cultural exports. These ideas\, though\, as well as the scholarly narratives that have accounted for haiku’s rise\, are very much a victor’s history\, one formulated by men such as the famous poet Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902). In this talk\, Robert Tuck provides a revisionist history of modern haiku\, highlighting both its widespread use as political discourse in Meiji media and the divisive rhetoric of social class that accompanied its rise to the status of “modern literature.” \n \nRobert Tuck is Assistant Professor of Modern Japanese Literature and Culture at Arizona State University. His research centers on 19th and 20th century literature\, especially poetry\, media\, and Sino-Japanese genres of writing. His most recent work is Idly Scribbling Rhymers: Poetry\, Print\, and Community in 19th Century Japan (Columbia University Press\, 2018). \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Linocuts by Meredith Stern
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 1948\, in the aftermath of the devastation of World War II\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a roadmap to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The complete Declaration is comprised of a Preamble and 30 Articles. In honor of the 60th anniversary of this document\, we are exhibiting 14 Articles in the form of illustrated prints by Meredith Stern. These contemporary prints are intended both to make people aware of this rights roadmap and to show its urgent relevance in our contemporary political moment.\n\nMeredith Stern is an artist currently based in Providence\, RI\, and a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to social\, environmental\, and political engagement. Stern created a total of 28 sets of these linocut prints in 2017\, of which one is held in the Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Astronomy Colloquium Series Presents
DESCRIPTION:“Origin of Molecular Clouds in Early Type Galaxies”\n\nThe Atacama Large Millimeter Array has changed our view of molecular clouds in central cluster galaxies. Unlike spiral galaxies where molecular gas lies in a disk moving in ordered motion about the center of the galaxy\, molecular clouds in cluster centrals likely form in the updrafts of rising radio bubbles. Less is known about molecular gas in normal giant ellipticals. However\, trends between the thermodynamic properties of the hot atmospheres in normal elliptcals and cluster centrals suggests much of the molecular gas in ellipticals condensed from their hot atmospheres.\n\nShould you require any reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access and opportunity related to this event\, please contact Stacy Tiburzi at 734-764-3440 or stibu@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLaSP Seminar Series - Prof. David Southwood
DESCRIPTION:Our guest for this week's CLaSP Seminar Series will be Prof. David Southwood of Imperial College London. Please join us! \n\nTitle: \"Why Saturn’s magnetic field pulses: certainties\, probabilities\, possibilities\"\n\nAbstract: Regular magnetic oscillations with slightly separate periods for northern and southern hemispheres permeate Saturn’s magnetosphere. Much is known of them but an established consensus on their precise origin or whether they play a fundamental role in magnetospheric dynamics has been hard to reach. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) should apply and we will apply some simple ideas from MHD. However\, we start from signal characteristics established from the 13 years of Cassini observations. Symmetry arguments can help. Indeed\, when northern and southern periods matched for around a year in 2013-14\, we argue that the symmetry seen reveals a lot. Using these results with early MHD theory (from the 80s)\, in this special case one can show that the transverse field components have equatorial nodes and so that the equatorial (torus) plasma executes large (Rs) gyrations always in the same sense. A subtler deduction is that energy absorption or mode conversion near the equator is unavoidable. Estimating gyration amplitude suggests steady substantial angular momentum transfer is likely. Indeed\, re-examining data on both steady and oscillatory electrical currents with this in mind reveals that the oscillations are likely to be the major means of ionosphere-magnetosphere angular momentum transfer in the middle magnetosphere. Energy principle arguments add to the credibility of the latter idea. Finally\, we speculate on the gyrations role in radial transport. \n\nDavid Southwood is planetary scientist with primary interest in magnetism and magnetohydrodynamics. Currently a Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College\, London. He is a member of the NASA JPL Advisory Council and ESA Council\, Chair of the Steering Board of the UK Space Agency\, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the London Institute for Space Policy and Law and a past president of the Royal Astronomical Society. After an academic career as a space scientist at Imperial College\, he joined ESA as Head of Earth Observation Strategy\, drawing up for ESA what is the current architecture for European Earth Observation programmes (Earth Explorers and Copernicus). In 2001 he became Director of Science at ESA\, taking responsibility for all Astronomy and Space science missions\, developing Herschel\, Planck and GAIA astronomical observatories\, Mars Express and Venus Express and oversight of Huygens landing on Titan. He later took responsibility for developing Europe’s long term plans in Mars exploration. He returned to Imperial College in 2011.

SUMMARY:Performance:Chair's Distinguished Lecture - Incorporating SLAM Methods and Error Correction for Accurate\, Scalable Autonomous Assembly of Space Structures
DESCRIPTION:Erik Komendera\, Ph.D.\, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University\n\nIn the field\, autonomous structure assembly is an unsolved problem dominated by uncertainty in the agents\, components\, sensors\, and environment. Inadequate solutions to this problem have prevented the practical adoption of autonomous assembly in the field\, which would enable improvements in safety\, reduction in costs\, and more ambitious concepts such as large space telescopes. Accurate state estimation\, and a capacity to correct errors\, will be crucial to enabling practical field assembly\, especially for structures such as space telescopes that require sub-mm accuracy over tens of meters. Uncorrected assembly experiences polynomial error growth stemming from sources including tolerances and manufacturing errors. By modeling structure assembly as a Bayesian process\, estimation methods can be applied to the assembly graph to improve accuracy. In recent research\, Dr. Komendera has developed an approach that adapts Simultaneous Localization and Mapping methods and local error correction onto an evolving assembly workspace modeled as a dynamic Bayesian network. This approach enables accurate\, scalable\, parallelizable construction without assuming perfect sensors or requiring a global measurement system. This talk will describe the mathematical foundations of the assembly algorithm\, its expected performance on backbone trusses and space telescope models\, validation through hardware trials\, and future research directions.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Erik Komendera is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech\, and director of the Autonomous Field and Space Robotics Laboratory. His research focuses on autonomous multi-agent construction on Earth\, on orbit\, and on the surfaces of other worlds\, with an emphasis on robust algorithms to detect\, classify\, and repair failures during and after the assembly process. His current projects include a collaboration with NASA to develop robots and algorithms for constructing lunar habitats and on-orbit persistent platforms. He also works with industry to improve methods for autonomous assembly of variable components. He is also a member of the in-Space Assembled Telescope (iSAT) study team that will recommend an approach to assembling a space telescope. From 2014-2018\, Dr. Komendera was a robotics researcher at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton\, VA. He earned his MS ('12) and PhD ('14) in Computer Science from the University of Colorado\, and a BSE in Aerospace Engineering ('07) from the University of Michigan. At NASA\, he served as assembly robot task lead on the project titled “Commercial Infrastructure for Robotic Assembly and Servicing” (CIRAS). In addition\, he was the Principal Investigator for a Langley IRAD project to investigate methods for assembling solar arrays.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Lecture. Locking up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America
DESCRIPTION:In his lecture\, James Forman\, Jr. will discuss some of the questions raised by his Pulitzer-prize winning book\, Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America. How did African-American elected officials and citizens respond to the surge in crime and drug addiction beginning in the 1970s? What were the impact of those decisions? Can we make different choices today? \n\nA reception and book signing will follow the public lecture.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored with support from: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, Department of History\, Department of Sociology\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, Institute for the Humanities\, International Institute Conflict and Peace Initiative\, and the Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion.\n\nA former public defender and a child of civil rights activists\, Professor Forman will share riveting stories of his clients\, politicians\, judges\, and ordinary citizens. He will speak with compassion about individuals trapped in terrible dilemmas. His lecture will enrich our understanding of why America has become so punitive and will offer important lessons about the future of race and the criminal justice system in this country.\n\nJames Forman\, Jr. graduated from Roosevelt High School in Atlanta\, Brown University\, and Yale Law School. He worked as a law clerk for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court. After clerking\, he joined the Public Defender Service in Washington\, D.C.\, where for six years he represented juveniles and adults in felony and misdemeanor cases. He has also won the general non-fiction Pulitzer Prize for his book \"Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America.\" \n \nProfessor Forman loved being a public defender\, but he quickly became frustrated with the lack of education and job training opportunities for his clients. So in 1997\, along with David Domenici\, he started the Maya Angelou Public Charter School\, an alternative school for dropouts and youth who had previously been arrested. A decade later\, in 2007\, Maya Angelou School expanded and agreed to run the school inside D.C.’s juvenile prison. That school\, which had long been an abysmal failure\, has been transformed under the leadership of the Maya Angelou staff\; the court monitor overseeing D.C.’s juvenile system called the turnaround “extraordinary.” \n \nAt Yale Law School\, where has taught since 2011\, Forman teaches Constitutional Law and a course called Race\, Class\, and Punishment. Last year he took his teaching behind prison walls\, offering a seminar called Inside-Out Prison Exchange: Issues in Criminal Justice\, which brought together\, in the same classroom\, 10 Yale Law students and 10 men incarcerated in a CT prison. \n \nProfessor Forman has written many law review articles\, in addition to op-eds and essays for the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, the New Republic\, the Nation\, and the Washington Post. His first book is the critically acclaimed\, Pulitzer Prize-winning \"Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America\" (2017) which explores how decisions made by black leaders\, often with the best of intentions\, contributed to disproportionately incarcerating black and brown people. A Washington Post bestseller\, \"Locking Up Our Own\" was longlisted for the National Book Award and has been named a Best Book of the Year by numerous publications\, including the New York Times\, The Marshall Project\, Publisher’s Weekly\, and GQ Magazine. Reviewers have called the book “superb and shattering” (New York Times)\, “eloquent” and “sobering” (London Review of Books)\, and “moving\, nuanced\, and candid” (New York Review of Books). On Twitter\, the New York Times book reviewer Jennifer Senior called \"Locking Up Our Own\" “the best book I’ve read this year.” \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to umichhumanrights@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series: Towards understanding the evolution of plant diversity in a biodiversity hotspot: insights from integrative systematics
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the origin and evolution of biodiversity is one of the main aims of systematics. Because the mountains of South America are hotspots of plant diversity\, they provide an ideal opportunity to study the role that geographic and ecological factors play in the origin and evolution of plant species. In this seminar\, I will present an \"integrative systematics\" analysis of Escallonia\, an eco-phenotypically diverse group of shrubs widely distributed in montane South America. Integrating phylogenetic\, biogeographic\, and bioclimatic analyses with a multidimensional approach to species delimitation\, I show that the majority of species in Escallonia have diversified across environmental gradients in close geographic proximity. This is consistent with the hypothesis that parapatric speciation has been the main diversification mechanism in these plants\, and suggests that ecological factors may be key forces in generating and maintaining plant species diversity in the mountains of South America.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/Wo4kxiE51W4

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Precision Measurements and Control of Single Biomolecules in Free Solution
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nBy looking at molecules as individuals\, single-molecule experiments can provide rich details that complement and deepen our understanding from bulk measurements. The ultimate goal of most single- molecule techniques is to reveal population-level or time-dependent heterogeneity in a system of interest by directly monitoring individual particles in a near-native environment. However\, confining a single molecule within an observation volume for long enough to detect a small\, noisy signal – without substantially perturbing that signal – is challenging\, especially in situations where tethering particles in place may restrict throughput or directly change the sample’s behavior. Since nearly all molecules possess some native charge\, electrophoretic forces that are generated by application of electric fields are an attractive option for manipulating particles without physical attachment. Similarly\, the electric field- induced motion of ions in the double layer near the walls of a micro- or nanofluidic channel can induce electroosmotic flow\, which imparts hydrodynamic forces that can be used to manipulate particles.\n\n\nHere\, I will present an overview of my recent work related to two unique single-molecule techniques that employ electric fields to enable control and precision measurements of single molecules and nanoscale particles in free solution. These strategies enable concurrent multi-parametric readout of the states of those objects\, which then can be used to classify their nature and behaviors. First\, I will discuss the use of static electric fields to draw charged biopolymers to and through small solid-state nanopores\, which can be used to resistively sense variations in chemical or geometric structure along the length of the analyte molecule. Second\, I will present results obtained via an Anti-Brownian Electrokinetic (ABEL) trap\, a technique in which Brownian motion is directly counteracted by active electrophoretic or electroosmotic feedback to maintain the position of a single molecule within a small confocal region. Because single molecules can be trapped for many seconds each\, high-precision fluorescence measurements can report on either static or dynamic heterogeneity in their structure and interactions. \n\n\nBecause these techniques utilize electrophoretic and electroosmotic forces\, the native charge of the analyte or surrounding medium are sufficient to achieve tether-free nanoscale confinement of single molecules and nanoparticles\, providing highly versatile sensing platforms to address both applied and basic biomedical\, biophysical\, and biochemical challenges.\n\nAllison Squires\, Ph.D.\, is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ELI Winter Workshop Series: WHAT IS ACADEMIC STYLE?
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are writing a research article\, proposal\, conference abstract or dissertation\, it is important to pay attention to style. Academic style is not so much a matter of following rules\, but more a matter of making choices. Even if you are aware of the stylistic conventions of your field and of academic writing in general\, you may also seek ways to more strongly position yourself and create your scholarly identity. In this workshop we will discuss some common features of academic style and how to make effective choices. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis.
