The Accolades Awards were developed by Arts at Michigan to foster the artistic growth of the student body at the University of Michigan by recognizing the accomplishments of the many extraordinary student arts groups on campus.\r\n\r\nAwards are designed to recognize achievements by student organizations in a wide range of categories, including Theatre, Music, Dance, Comedy and Improv, Visual Arts, Literary publications and more. This year, using a turn-based, participatory simulation developed for the competition by the\u00a0Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming, student teams will take on cabinet-level positions of a virtual country. Participants enter policy decisions in the simulation software to see how their policies affect their citizens, their economy, and the migrants themselves.\r\n\r\nAs part of the competition, teams will be expected to put together a policy memo and presentation. Evaluations of student performance will be based on two factors: 1) Their team\u2019s simulation scores, and 2) Observations by subject matter experts serving as judges at each host site.\u00a0\r\n\r\nWHAT HAPPENS ON THE COMPETITION DAY?\r\n\r\nThe competition is an all day event. Teams will travel to their host site, where they will undertake three rounds of the simulation: twice in the morning, plus once after lunch. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo, Ohio, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas, Michigan. Born in Schenectady, NY in 1969, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive, decaying factories, an empty interstate loop, and unemployment were downtown; new streets, expensive homes, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\r\n\r\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. In the early 1970s, that question was hotly debated as artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how \u201cgreat modern art\u201d was defined and assessed, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse, abstraction had an especially fraught role. In this lecture, members of Les Bostonades will examine the cantatas of Mont\u00e9clair and Gervais as well as Couperin\u2019s Les Go\u00fbts-r\u00e9unis, how these composers presented controversial material to a dangerous audience, and the subtle political messaging they employed.\r\n\r\nThe period-instrument ensemble Les Bostonades has been sharing chamber music with Boston area audiences since its founding in 2005. The ensemble features Baroque music specialists who have studied and performed all over the world, who collaborate in Boston\u2019s vibrant early music scene, bringing spirited and polished performances to their listeners. The ensemble\u2019s performances have been described as \u201cthe most engaging chamber music playing\u2026[a] generous, voluptuous sound\u2026well delineated, [and with] a poignancy of emotion.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe ensemble has developed under the direction of Akiko Sato, an acclaimed harpsichordist and continuo player with a unique cultural background. Jahn\u2019s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher, caretaker, woodshop cleaner-upper, lumber hauler, community organizer, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people, mundane routines, and a desire to build an inclusive society.
