SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Manna Pottery by Rezgar Mamandi
DESCRIPTION:After finding Mannea pottery artifacts at archaeological sites in his hometown of Rabat in the northwest of Kurdistan in Iran\, Rezgar Mamandi discovered his passion for ceramic art. His formal studies in ceramic art technique were in Turkey. Now Mamandi creates Manna Pottery\, decorative and functional ceramics reproduced from 7th century Mannea Art originals. With hand-painted figures\, patterns\, shapes and colors\, each piece is one-of-a-kind with an ancient\, yet contemporary look achieved by using lead-free\, high-fire oxidation glazes. To describe his relationship to art\, Mamandi quotes Thomas Merton: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of presents Art\, Music & Autism: Jazz Musicians in Mixed Media by Juliette Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:In Juliette Hemingway’s work\, viewers can imagine the grumbling tones of a saxophone or the sharp lines of a trombone. The sound is inside the musicians. You may not know the details of their experience or understand it\, but it's visceral. That is what jazz is in Hemingway's work. It is the instinctual part of her life that she gives to viewers as a visual excerpt: a life that revolves around healing\, autism\, creativity and awareness. Jazz and the blue-hued musicians give you a sense of the deep-rooted experiences of her son and what it is to live with autism\, and for her\, straining to look into his secret world. Hemingway is based in Aurora\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. A gender neutral restroom is available on the first floor.\n\nContact Heidi Bennett\, IRWG Event Planner (heidiab@umich.edu) with questions about this exhibition.\n\nCosponsors: Department of Women's Studies\, Stamps School of Art & Design\, Department of English\, Art History\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, Center for the Education of Women+

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Blind House: Utopia and Dystopia in the Age of Radical Transparency
DESCRIPTION:\"Blind House: Utopia and Dystopia in the Age of Radical Transparency\,\" by collaborative artists Paloma Muñoz and Walter Martin\, is a razor-sharp work that brings into question our ideals of house and home\, privacy\, and safety.\n\nThe exhibition combines photographs the artists have envisioned of houses without windows as well an actual glass house planned for the center of the gallery\, revisiting the whole notion of a glass house as an example of sophistication\, luxury\, and modernism.\n\nIn a darkening an era of surveillance and the internet\, for Martin and Muñoz\, \"Blind House\" serves as \"a metaphorical solution to the full on campaign against personal privacy.\" Read the artists' statement at http://myumi.ch/6wxbk

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Ancient Color
DESCRIPTION:The Roman world was a colorful place. Although we often associate the Romans with white marble statues\, these statues — as well as Roman homes\, clothing\, and art — were vibrant with color. This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world\, how these colors were produced\, where they were found\, what the Romans thought about them\, and how we study them today. We hope that visitors will think about what different colors mean to them\, and how these meanings compare to the roles of colors in the ancient Roman world.\n\nCurators: Catherine Person and Caroline Roberts\n\nView the online exhibition: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/ancient-color/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Householdments
DESCRIPTION:John was born in Tokyo\, Japan in 1971. His family settled in Grand Rapids\, Michigan after stays in both Japan and Iowa. After attending various universities around Michigan\, John took an education hiatus to work in a cannery in Alaska. It was there that he found his calling in the pages of American Craft while scouring the tables of free magazines at the Anchorage Public Library. He received his BFA (Furniture Design) from Northern Michigan University in 1996 and his MFA (Furniture Design) from Rhode Island School of Design in 2000. John teaches in the School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University. John has recently exhibited work at the Muskegon Museum of Art\, the Midland Center for the Arts\, the Grand Rapids Art Museum\, and the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum. He lives in Ann Arbor and maintains a studio in his home.\n\n<<>><<>><<>> Householdments <<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>\nWhile I don’t literally remember my earliest childhood years in Japan where I was born\, I have over my lifetime\, stitched together memories based on home movies\, family photos\, and images from my imagination. I “remember” the aesthetics of the place - objects and environments carefully made in wood\, stone\, and steel. Without necessarily conscious of it at the time\, I was dimly aware of Japanese visual composition. Things around me held an inherent logic and beauty\, a perfection made possible by keen tools\, quality materials\, and proficient makers. This three-part integration was embedded early on and continues to affect my own ongoing pursuit in object making.\n\nWhile finding my way as a young maker\, I realized where I belonged mostly because of how various studios smelled. The ceramics studio was musty and dirty\, the metals studio was acrid and smoky\, but the wood studio had an earthy aroma. My kind of place. The tools immediately felt right as well. Chisels\, planes\, and knives when sharpened properly could manipulate the material in ways I never expected. While I was clearly not a natural talent\, I quickly realized that a little bit of tenacity goes a long way. I also realized that I loved the logic for how wood parts can fit together. To build a wooden object or a piece of furniture each part depends on the fit of others. I deeply appreciate this fitting togetherness – how doors fit\, how drawers fit\, how joints fit\, how hinges fit. It all makes sense\, and this sensibility carries through to what I’m doing today.\n\nWorking in wood typically requires a high degree of planning before actual construction\, and over time I realized I craved the ability to work with more spontaneity. The work in this show reflects my wish to keep the working process a bit more flexible and intuitive.\n\nWhen starting with a sketch that I believe has potential\, I now begin to build directly\, without drawings or maquettes. I’ll constantly assess what has been built and allow myself to alter it\, continue with it\, or get rid of it and start over. I’m more interested in seeing where this process takes me than I am in finishing something precisely as planned. This results in some playfulness and whimsy that I hope is reflected in this work.\n\nThe word Householdments is an old and obscure term without modern usage that refers to furniture or things we keep in our houses. It strikes me as an odd word but well fitted to describe the objects in this exhibit. The pieces in this show are a collection of my personal householdments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISR Hackerspace with CPS faculty Christopher Fariss
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Fariss is excited to host a weekly Tuesday morning hackerspace from February 12 until April 23. Dr. Fariss uses computational methods and the statistical program R to study why governments around the world torture\, maim\, and kill individuals within their jurisdiction\, and the processes monitors use to observe and document these abuses. Other research projects cover a broad array of themes but share a focus on computationally intensive methods\, research design\, and the analysis of data at a massive scale. \n\nThis weekly meeting with Dr. Fariss is for those with an interest in the R statistical programming language. Both beginners and experienced users are invited to attend. Dr. Fariss plans to introduce mostly introductory material during these sessions but will also cover Bayesian modeling in R and STAN.\n\nThe goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate\, hackers need to bring their own laptops and\, ideally\, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF A MUSEUM AS A CULTURAL REPOSITORY\n \nIn celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished U–M art professor Jim Cogswell was invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist adhered a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative\, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums' permanent collections.  The juxtaposed images address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.  Cosmogonic Tattoos is on view at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through May 2\, 2018 and UMMA through June 2\, 2019.\n \n#CosmogonicTattoos\n\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional support for the artist's project is provided by the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ChE Seminar Series: Alina Rwei
DESCRIPTION:Title: Shedding Light on Pain Therapeutics: From Externally-Triggerable Drug Delivery Systems to Bioelectronics\n\nABSTRACT\nCurrent treatments of pain heavily rely on opioids\, resulting in significant side effects such as addiction\, tolerance\, leading to the Opioid Overdose Crisis as we know of today. Smart drug delivery systems may provide an effective solution. Here I present the development of externally-triggerable drug delivery systems for on-demand\, repeatable and adjustable local anesthesia\, where the timing\, duration\, and intensity of nerve block can be controlled through external energy triggers such as light and ultrasound. In addition to traditional pharmacological approaches\, bioelectronic platforms to enhance our insights into the diagnostics and mechanisms of pain and will also be discussed. Through pharmacological\, optical\, and electrical toolsets\, we aim to develop effective therapeutic solutions to neurological disease states.\n\nSHORT BIO\nDr. Rwei received both her undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, with her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering\, completed in June 2017. Her Ph.D. training was conducted under the supervision of Professor Robert Langer at MIT and Professor Daniel Kohane at Harvard Medical School. Her thesis\, titled “Externally Triggerable Drug Delivery Systems for On-Demand Nerve Block\,” focused on the design and development of light- and ultrasound- triggerable drug delivery systems for repeatable and adjustable release of local anesthetics. Her experience has yielded publications in high-impact journals including Nature Biomedical Engineering\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)\, Nano Letters\, and Journal of Controlled Release. She is now a postdoctoral scholar in Professor\nJohn Rogers’ lab at Northwestern University. She is the recipient of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Research Training Award (TL1) from the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program by NIH/NCATS.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Confined curved shells and their elaborate conformations
DESCRIPTION:Curved shells\, when confined\, can deform to a broad assortment of large scale shapes and smaller scale wrinkling and folding patterns quite unlike those produced by their flat counterparts. The intrinsic\, natural curvature of an elastic shell is the central element that allows for this rich and very interesting morphological landscape. It is also the source of the geometric nonlinearities that render a direct analytic treatment of non-Euclidean shells difficult\, even under small forces or applied loads. In this talk we examine some snapshots of this morphological landscape. Inspired by the natural folding and unfolding of pollen grains\, we use theory\, simulations and experiments to explore the large scale deformation of a confined thin spherical shell with an opening. We then proceed to investigate the surface topography of shallow doubly curved shells resting on a fluid substrate. The frustration due to the competing flat geometry of the substrate and the curved one of the shell produces a wealth of highly reproducible and ordered wrinkling patterns\, in conjunction with other random and disordered patterns as well. These examples illustrate that Gaussian curvature can be a powerful tool for the creation of complex patterns

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FellowSpeak: \"The Digital Popular: Media\, Culture and Politics in Networked India\"
DESCRIPTION:U-M Associate Professor of Communication Studies and 2018-19 Steelcase Faculty Fellow Aswin Punathambekar gives a 30-minute talk followed by Q & A.\n\nU-M Associate Professor of Communication Studies and 2019 Steelcase Faculty Fellow Aswin Punathambekar explores political salience of popular culture in the context of rise of digital media technologies\, the ongoing transformation of established media industries\, and emergent forms of digital media use in contemporary India. In a context where cassette culture\, color television\, VCRs\, cable and satellite broadcasting\, the internet\, and mobile phones all arrived within a span of two decades\, digital media platforms are layered onto existing media infrastructures\, institutions\, and the intensely mediated routines of daily life for hundreds of millions of people. The result is the emergence of a hybrid arena defined by two distinct zones of public culture: on the one hand\, powerful film and television industries that are shaped primarily by logics of scale\, audience niches\, and a politics of representation\, and on the other hand\, social media companies defined by emergent logics of data-driven programming and production\, algorithmic curation\, and user participation. As part of an ongoing project on mediated political cultures\, this talk will address how these media dynamics have transformed links between popular culture and politics and\, in the process\, reconfigured the meanings and performances of citizenship in contemporary India.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Threat to Global Press Freedom: Censorship\, Imprisonment and Murder
DESCRIPTION:Harmful rhetoric towards journalists and the press casts doubt about the future of a free press and the safety of reporters. This was evident following the murders of five staff members at the Capital Gazette and Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. As democratic nations fall short in protecting press freedom\, what are the implications for journalists of all nations? In alarming numbers\, reporters around the world are persecuted\, jailed\, exiled and even killed for exposing the truth.\n\nKnight-Wallace international journalists Vanessa Gezari of The Intercept\, Itai Anghel of Israeli TV\, and Jawad Sukhanyar of The New York Times will discuss how threats and state censorship impact their work. In a discussion led by the University’s media law and First Amendment scholar Professor Leonard Niehoff\, they will share their experiences reporting from Eastern Europe\, the Middle East\, South Asia and Africa and discuss what can be done to protect journalists and foster press freedom around the world.\n\nThe Eisendrath Symposium honors Charles R. Eisendrath\, former director of Wallace House\, and his lifelong commitment to international journalism.

Angell Hall Auditorium D\n-Reception: 7:30pm\, 3512 Haven Hall. Food will be served.\n\nThe Latina/o Studies Program\, the Department of American Culture\, the Center for Educational Outreach and La Casa invite you to celebrate Chicano labor leader César Chávez’s enduring legacy and the richness of Latinx culture at the University of Michigan. Please join us for a very special arts workshop with visiting artists Jeff Abbey Maldonado and Dulce Santoyo\, to be followed by an artist talk featuring Jeff Maldonado and including a Flor y Canto Nahuat Xochitl in Cuitcatl Flower and Song Celebration with local and student poets. Our evening will culminate with a reception in 3512 Haven Hall to celebrate the University Housing donation of Maldonado’s 1998 César Chávez mural to Latina/o Studies and American Culture.\n\nJeff Abbey Maldonado lives and works in Pilsen\, Chicago. He has maintained his studio for the past 20 years. He studied under Mario Castillo\, professor at Columbia College\, who is credited with painting the first Latino mural in Chicago. Maldonado’s work has been shown nationally and internationally\, including at the National Museum of Mexican Art\, Chicago Cultural Center\, The Field Museum\, and the Chicago History Museum. Currently\, he is Founder and Director of the J-Def Peace Project\, which promotes youth empowerment through the arts. Dulce Santoyo is an emerging Latina artist working in Chicago.\n\nThe Chávez mural was donated to American Culture in summer 2018 thanks to the student activism of La Casa. It previously was held by University Housing—a unit of Student Life—and was displayed in the César Chávez Lounge at the Mosher-Jordan “Mo-Jo” Student Residence Hall in the Hill Neighborhood on Observatory\, home to the Michigan Research Community and the Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program. The mural is an interpretation of the activism of César Chávez\, born of Mexican heritage in Yuma\, Arizona in 1927. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Gravitational Wave Detection and Dark Matter Searches with Atom Interferometry
DESCRIPTION:Atom interferometers exploit the quantum mechanical\, wavelike nature of massive particles to make a broad range of highly precise measurements. Recent technological advances have opened a path for atom interferometers to contribute to two areas at the forefront of modern physics: gravitational wave astronomy and the search for dark matter. In this seminar\, I will describe a new experiment\, MAGIS 100\, that will use a 100-meter-tall atom interferometer to pursue these directions. MAGIS-100 will serve as a prototype gravitational wave detector in the mid-band frequency range 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz\, which is complementary to the frequency bands addressed by laser interferometers such as LIGO and the planned LISA experiment. I will discuss the scientific motivation for gravitational wave detection in the mid-band. In addition\, I will explain how MAGIS-100 can look for ultralight dark matter\, a well-motivated class of dark matter candidates that behave as coherently oscillating fields. \n

SUMMARY:Other:Enantioselective Chemical Synthesis Methods via Cooperative Catalysis: Design\, Development and Application
DESCRIPTION: Our laboratory has embraced cooperative catalysis as a general framework for the design of new enantioselective reactions. Within this regime we have exploited cooperation between Lewis base and transition metal catalysts as an effective means to control and direct both reaction partners during bond construction. The versatility of this approach is such that each catalyst acts in an orthogonal manner\, which permits the role and function of the metal center to be modified and tuned without compromising enantioselectivity. This seminar will describe our most recent efforts in asymmetric carbon–carbon and carbon-nitrogen bond formation. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThomas Snaddon (Indiana University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Influence of Biblical Cantillations on Art Music in the 20th and 21st Centuries
DESCRIPTION:The oldest part of Jewish music culture is the ritualized presentation of texts from the Hebrew Bible (tanakh) organized through a complex and highly diversified system of strict musical rules and distinct motifs (cantillations). This system was essentially created during the Biblical times\; it was then passed on orally for several centuries and codified in the 9th century with special signs (teamim). Since the beginning of the 20th century\, the motifs of biblical cantillations have been perceived by Jewish composers as the “most authentic” part of the Jewish musical tradition and used as a source of inspiration and “building material” in many works. As a rule\, in this context the motifs of cantillation lost their connection to the liturgy and their direct relation to the text and were merely identified as the musical embodiment of the Jewishness. By their archaic character and their shortness of breath they also significantly influenced the musical style of the new Jewish art music.\n\nThere is both an accessible elevator and gender-neutral restroom on the first and second floor. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation\, contact the Judaic Studies office at judaicstudies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.\n\nThe lecture is part of a two-day residency\, \"Jewish Art Music in Interwar Europe\". Dr. Nemtsov will join School of Music\, Theatre & Dance students and alumni in two concerts of Jewish art music. \nConcerts are free and open to the public with receptions to follow.\n\nLocation:\nUniversity of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\nE.V. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Professor L. Lacey Knowles\, the Robert B. Payne Collegiate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Inaugural Lecture
DESCRIPTION:From the patterns of genomic variation in individuals living today\, phylogeographic analyses provide a window into a species’ past. When viewed in a comparative context\, examples of concordant genetic structure across assemblages of species\, despite their biological difference\, have reinforced a conceptual and methodological focus on abiotic factors in shaping species’ histories. This emphasis has also promoted an adherence to generic expectations of phylogeographic concordance irrespective of the composition of communities and a tendency to attribute discord to the idiosyncracies of history. However\, from the increased sampling densities and unprecedented amounts of genomic data\, what is emerging in comparative phylogeography is a complex of concordant and discordant genetic structure across community members. In my talk\, and with reference to computational advances and recent developments at the molecular level\, I will highlight how discordant patterns of genetic variation may arise from difference in the traits and ecologies of taxa. That is\, discord across species may reflect deterministic processes linked to species-specific traits. In addition to reviewing the methodologies that are propelling this promising area of research\, and based on examples of comparative phylogeographic studies\, I will show how considering the contribution of taxon-specific traits\, rather than adhering to the concordance-discordance dichotomy\, can provide more meaningful insights about the evolutionary history of organisms. These studies emphasize that to understand how the divergence process may differ among geographic regions\, or why genetic structure may differ among members of communities\, both biotic and abiotic factors need to be considered jointly.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | De/militarized Ecologies: Making Peace with Nature Along the Korean DMZ
DESCRIPTION:With the discovery of rare and endangered species in areas around the Korean Demilitarized Zone\, and inspired by the paradoxical flourishing of nonhuman nature in the context of unending war\, a wide network of scientists\, bureaucrats\, journalists\, natural scientists\, citizen ecologists\, and others have become captured by a utopian vision in which nature\, peace\, and life constitute a tightly-wound bundle of naturalized associations. Especially since the late 1990s\, in the context of increasingly dire planetary futures presented by global climate change and mass extinction\, as well as with the deteriorating prospects of national reunification or reconciliation between the two Koreas\, the DMZ’s nature has offered the conceptual ground for mainstream and marginal imaginaries of peace in South Korea and beyond. While it would be easy to dismiss these hopeful discourses as naive and romanticizing\, this paper seeks to take them seriously as empirically-grounded logics in which the existence of biodiversity of the DMZ offers alternatives to geopolitics as usual. How is the DMZ’s nature temporally operationalized as transhistorical and universal\, connecting a pre-division\, yet national\, space to a “context yet to come” of a post-division Korea? What imaginative possibilities does it offer beyond state-centric and nationalist frameworks for unification? \n \nEleana Kim is associate professor of anthropology at UC Irvine and author of Adopted Territory: Transnational Korean Adoptees and the Politics of Belonging (Duke UP\, 2010). Her research on the ecologies of the Korean DMZ has been funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation and the ACLS\, and related articles may be found in Cultural Anthropology\, Social Research\, and the forthcoming edited volume\, How Nature Works (SAR Press).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library
DESCRIPTION:A multi-venue exhibition of site-specific installations\, performances\, interventions\, and events by University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students\, Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is curated by Guna Nadarajan\, dean of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan\, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Hatcher Graduate Library\, and the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library. \n\nThe continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment\, distribution\, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result\, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment\, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for/of books and libraries.\n\nBookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Michigan Library\, the University of Michigan Office for Research (UMOR)\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n\n
