SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Bending the Lines: Acrylic on Canvas by Bala Thiagarajan
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in India\, Bala Thiagarajan has a passion for colors and patterns that are inspired by Indian culture. Her henna-inspired designs as Mandala paintings are an attempt to capture the ephemeral nature of these everyday art forms onto more enduring surfaces. Mandalas are used for facilitating personal growth\, healing\, grounding and transformation. Thiagarajan’s paintings greet viewers with the familiarity of repetitive patterns\, while creating an exciting opportunity to explore texture and geometry. Based in Wood Dale\, Illinois\, Thiagarajan exhibits her work throughout the Midwest and will be participating in the 2019 Ann Arbor South University Art Fair.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Manna Pottery by Rezgar Mamandi
DESCRIPTION:After finding Mannea pottery artifacts at archaeological sites in his hometown of Rabat in the northwest of Kurdistan in Iran\, Rezgar Mamandi discovered his passion for ceramic art. His formal studies in ceramic art technique were in Turkey. Now Mamandi creates Manna Pottery\, decorative and functional ceramics reproduced from 7th century Mannea Art originals. With hand-painted figures\, patterns\, shapes and colors\, each piece is one-of-a-kind with an ancient\, yet contemporary look achieved by using lead-free\, high-fire oxidation glazes. To describe his relationship to art\, Mamandi quotes Thomas Merton: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

DESCRIPTION:Barbara J. Schneider’s studio is in the Starline Factory in Harvard\, Illinois. She has an extensive background in surface design\, and she works with cloth\, paint\, dye and thread. The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi (aesthetic of transience and imperfection) is a strong influence in her work. These small\, intimate artworks use vintage Japanese boro fabrics as backgrounds for personal objects that contain a Wabi-Sabi spirit. Schneider teaches and exhibits her work nationally and internationally\, and her work is in both private and public collections.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of presents Art\, Music & Autism: Jazz Musicians in Mixed Media by Juliette Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:In Juliette Hemingway’s work\, viewers can imagine the grumbling tones of a saxophone or the sharp lines of a trombone. The sound is inside the musicians. You may not know the details of their experience or understand it\, but it's visceral. That is what jazz is in Hemingway's work. It is the instinctual part of her life that she gives to viewers as a visual excerpt: a life that revolves around healing\, autism\, creativity and awareness. Jazz and the blue-hued musicians give you a sense of the deep-rooted experiences of her son and what it is to live with autism\, and for her\, straining to look into his secret world. Hemingway is based in Aurora\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michigan Quantum Science and Technology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:One of the near term objectives of the Working Group is to develop a complete picture of the Michigan footprint in quantum science and technology and work to shape the image so that it can be understood in the context of the quantum initiative that is shaping up in the different funding agencies. To help in this process\, a workshop is being held in April where speakers from other institutions and organizations will give their perspective on the future in this area. In addition\, there will be approximately 5 internal speakers. Each of the internal speakers are working to prepare a description of the focus and impact of an area of research that includes the work of several faculty including themselves. Between the internal speakers\, we expect to be able to include almost all the research areas of people who has responded to the invitation to submit their work for inclusion.\n\nAdditional Information and Registration: https://qstwg.engin.umich.edu/michigan-quantum-science-and-technology-workshop/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. A gender neutral restroom is available on the first floor.\n\nContact Heidi Bennett\, IRWG Event Planner (heidiab@umich.edu) with questions about this exhibition.\n\nCosponsors: Department of Women's Studies\, Stamps School of Art & Design\, Department of English\, Art History\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, Center for the Education of Women+

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Ancient Color
DESCRIPTION:The Roman world was a colorful place. Although we often associate the Romans with white marble statues\, these statues — as well as Roman homes\, clothing\, and art — were vibrant with color. This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world\, how these colors were produced\, where they were found\, what the Romans thought about them\, and how we study them today. We hope that visitors will think about what different colors mean to them\, and how these meanings compare to the roles of colors in the ancient Roman world.\n\nCurators: Catherine Person and Caroline Roberts\n\nView the online exhibition: http://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/ancient-color/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:THE MORE THINGS CHANGE\, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME: GENDERSOCIALIZATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
DESCRIPTION:Karin A. Martin is a Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She has published extensively on gender\, sexuality\, and childhood in everyday life. Her research has appeared in many outlets including American Sociological Review\, Gender & Society\, Child Abuse & Neglect\, and Journal of Family Issues. She is author of Puberty\, Sexuality\, and the Self: Girls and Boys at Adolescence (Routledge\, 1996).\n\nSince the feminist movements of the 1970s\, has childhood become more gender equal? We have seen enormous social changes with respect to gender in educational attainment\, in the work- place\, in politics\, and in some aspects of marriage over the last 50 years. But what about early childhood? Do boys and girls have the same experiences and opportunities in childhood? Research suggests somewhat of a mixed picture\, with some changes\, some stalls\, and some regression.\n\nThis is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is Changing Gender Roles. The next lecture will be April 18\, 2019. The title is: Changing Gender Economic Roles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF A MUSEUM AS A CULTURAL REPOSITORY\n \nIn celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished U–M art professor Jim Cogswell was invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist adhered a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative\, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums' permanent collections.  The juxtaposed images address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.  Cosmogonic Tattoos is on view at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through May 2\, 2018 and UMMA through June 2\, 2019.\n \n#CosmogonicTattoos\n\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional support for the artist's project is provided by the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:#MeToo: A WeListen Staff Discussion
DESCRIPTION:#MeToo: A WeListen Staff Discussion\n\nThis session of WeListen is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!\n\nRSVP here: http://myumi.ch/LzEYO\n\nThe #MeToo movement has highlighted issues of sexual misconduct across the globe since going viral in October 2017. Initially centered around sexual misconduct in the workplace\, the movement has since allowed survivors of sexual harassment and assault to speak about their experiences in broader contexts. The hashtag has reached the entertainment industry\, higher education\, politics\, and more as people like Aziz Ansari\, Matt Lauer\, Kevin Spacey\, Bill Cosby\, Larry Nassar\, and Brett Kavanaugh have their reputations called into question. Some remain unscathed after public scrutiny while others lose their jobs or are sentenced to prison time.\n\nHave we seen true change in sexual misconduct policy since the hashtag began? Does the #MeToo movement violate the American value of \"innocent until proven guilty?\" Can allegations of sexual misconduct be managed by the court of public opinion or should all consequences be withheld until a trial has taken place?\n\nJoin us at this WeListen Staff Discussion to learn about the #MeToo movement and to participate in small group discussions about this complex topic. Our aim is to bring liberals\, conservatives\, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue\, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.\n\n\nBy participating in WeListen sessions\, staff members will:\n- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic\n- Practice discussing difficult topics with others\,\n- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives\,\n- Learn to productively challenge an idea\, and\n- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.\n\nQuestions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu. \n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center\, the International Institute\, LSA Psychology\, the Opportunity Hub\, UM Poverty Solutions\, and the UM Shared Services Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CRITICAL x DESIGN: Old\, Raw or New: A (New?) Deal for the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:American historians debate whether Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Depression-era legislation was\, in fact\, a New Deal\, or perhaps an “Old Deal” or a “Raw Deal.” Considering multiple perspectives and voices\, combined with the long sweep of history\, stokes this lively\, ongoing debate. In this CRITICAL x DESIGN talk\, Rankin turns her attention to American computing in the 1960s and 1970s to consider whether the academic networks of that era may be inspiration for a Digital New Deal. \n\nThe users of 1960s and 1970s academic computing networks built\, accessed\, and participated in cooperative digital commons\, developing now-quotidian practices of personal computing and social media. In the process\, they became what she calls “computing citizens.” She uses several case studies to illustrate the dynamic - and unexpected - relationships among gender\, community\, computing\, and citizenship\, including the Old Deals and the Raw Deals of computing citizenship. How might these computing citizens inform crucial contemporary debates about technology and justice?\n\nAbout the speaker\nDr. Joy Lisi Rankin is a feministi\, anti-racist historian\, and a Contributing Editor for Lady Science. She is also a consultant for the documentaries The Birth of BASIC and The Queen of Code and for the television show Girls Code. Rankin was an Exchange Scholar at MIT while earning her doctorate in History from Yale University\, as well as a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Prior to entering the academy\, she had a successful career launching educational programs for students of all ages\, which took her around the country. Her website is joyrankin.com.\n\nThe CRITICAL x DESIGN series is generously supported by the School of Information\; the Center for Political Studies at the Institute for Social Research\; and the Science\, Technology & Society program and Department of Communication Studies in the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts.

SUMMARY:Presentation:PSC & GFP Brown Bags: A tale of three monkeys: male-mediated prenatal loss explained
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Infanticide by males has been the subject of intense empirical and theoretical study for decades. However\, a related phenomenon\, male-mediated prenatal loss\, has received considerably less attention. Male-mediated prenatal loss occurs when inseminated or pregnant females terminate reproductive effort following exposure to a non-sire male\, either through implantation failure or pregnancy termination. Male-mediated prenatal loss encompasses two sub-phenomena: sexually selected feticide and the Bruce effect. In this talk\, I will walk through three different evolutionary scenarios in three species of primate - the yellow baboon\, the gelada\, and the chacma baboon - to lay out a framework that explains the relationship between infanticide\, feticide\, and the Bruce effect and describes the proximate and ultimate mechanisms involved for each. I argue that male-mediated prenatal loss may have played a greater role in mammalian social evolution than has previously been documented.

SUMMARY:Presentation:EHAP Speaker Series: When good people make bad decisions: Human evolutionary traps across behavioral contexts and spatial scales
DESCRIPTION:Evolutionary traps are scenarios in which wild animals are fooled by rapidly changing conditions into preferring poor-quality resources over those that better improve survival and reproductive success. Yet\, this type of severely maladaptive behavior are also well-known and studied in the field of human psychology\, clinical medicine and education. Sociologists\, too\, have demonstrated that group behaviors in the context of resource management can have major costs for individuals\, possibly at the level of entire societies and in ways that can lead to their collapse. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Brown: South Asian Narratives of Brownness in Southeast Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Using an interdisciplinary lens\, the exhibit explores the heterogeneity in the contours of brown narratives among South Asians in the Midwest. Although there is an emerging interest in the social construction of brownness on its own terms\, most of such explorations are situated either in the East or West Coast. Rarely have the narratives of brownness in the Midwest been explored. The Midwest\, particularly Ann Arbor and the greater Detroit area\, has a sizable population of South Asians who work in a variety of blue collar to professional jobs that range from motel cleaners to doctors.\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Ram Mahalingam\, Osman Khan\, and Aswin Punathamebkar.

DESCRIPTION:The IOE 899 Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThe seminar will be followed by a reception in the IOE Commons (Room 1709) from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm.\n\nTitle: \nWhite Coat\, Black Box: Augmenting Clinical Care with AI in the Era of Deep Learning\n\nAbstract:\nThough the potential impact of machine learning in healthcare warrants genuine enthusiasm\, the increasing computerization of the field is still often seen as a negative rather than a positive. The limited adoption of machine learning in healthcare to date points to the fact that there remain important challenges. In this talk\, I will highlight two key challenges related to applying machine learning in healthcare: i) interpretability and ii) small sample size. First\, machine learning has often been criticized for producing ‘black boxes.’ In this talk\, I will argue that interpretability is neither necessary nor sufficient\, demonstrating that even interpretable models can lack common sense. To address this issue\, we propose a novel regularization method that enables the incorporation of domain knowledge during model training\, leading to increased robustness. Second\, machine learning techniques benefit from large amounts of data. However\, oftentimes in healthcare we find ourselves in data poor settings (i.e.\, small sample sizes). I will show how domain knowledge can help guide architecture choices and efficiently make use of available data. In summary\, there’s a critical need for machine learning in healthcare\; however\, the safe and meaningful adoption of these techniques requires close collaboration in interdisciplinary teams.\n\nBio: \nJenna Wiens is a Morris Wellman Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning\, data mining\, and healthcare. Dr. Wiens received her PhD from MIT in 2014\, was named Forbes 30 under 30 in Science and Healthcare in 2015\, received an NSF CAREER Award in 2016\, and was recently named to the MIT Tech Review's list of Innovators Under 35.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLaSP Seminar Series - Prof. Stephen Bougher
DESCRIPTION:Our guest for this week's CLaSP Seminar Series will be CLaSP Professor Stephen Bougher.\n\nTitle: \"The Responses of the Mars Upper Atmosphere to the 2018 Planetary Encircling Dust Event\" \n\nAbstract: The Mars upper atmosphere\, encompassing the thermosphere\, ionosphere\, and lower portion of the exosphere (~100 to 400 km)\, constitutes the reservoir that regulates present day volatile escape processes from the planet. The characterization of this upper atmosphere reservoir (composed of neutrals and ions) is therefore one of the major science objectives of the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN Mission (MAVEN). MAVEN also provides a unique opportunity for the first time to sample the upper atmosphere systematically during a global dust storm event\, thereby capturing feedbacks among the processes occurring across these atmospheric regions. Connections to the Mars lower atmosphere are gleaned from concurrent non-MAVEN observations.\n	The recent planet encircling dust event (PEDE-2018) started May 30\, 2018\, as viewed in imaging from the MRO/MARCI (Mars Context Imager). The growth of the dust storm over the next 6-weeks (up to 10-July) witnessed the horizontal redistribution of dust around the planet (lofting dust up to ~60-70 km)\, resulting in substantial warming of middle atmosphere temperatures (~25-80 km) as observed by the MRO/MCS (Mars Climate Sounder). Corresponding upper atmosphere (~150-220 km) responses by neutral densities\, temperatures\, and winds were measured by the MAVEN/NGIMS (Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer)\, the MAVEN/IUVS (Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer) during this onset period\, and the 2-month decay phase that followed. NGIMS measured neutral composition includes major gas species (e.g. He\, O\, CO\, N2\, O\, Ar and CO2). IUVS measured dayside CO2+ UVD airglow emissions\, from which CO2 densities and corresponding temperatures can be extracted. The time evolving density\, temperature\, and wind fields during the PEDE-2018 event will be presented.\nCorresponding Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (M-GITM) predictions can be compared to these NGIMS (IUVS) measurements along orbit tracks (along tangent height paths). New M-GITM model simulation are driven by time-evolving solar EUV-UV fluxes (measured by the MAVEN/EUVM–Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor) plus time-evolving dust opacities (measured by the MRO/MCS) during the onset and decay phases of the storm. This data-model study provides a first look at the processes driving these upper atmosphere variations and the dust storm trends gleaned from these MAVEN measurements.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: New research to inform living shoreline design\, placement and monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Living shoreline techniques can be effective tools for bolstering coastal habitats\, controlling erosion\, and protecting coastal areas from the impacts of storms\, sea level rise and boat wakes. Under the right conditions\, they can provide a variety of services while being cost-competitive with traditional approaches\, such as bulkheads. Despite their potential\, living shoreline designs are not applied as broadly or effectively as might be expected. \n\nMembers of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) and partners\, in part supported by Science Collaborative resources\, have been studying how different living shoreline designs perform in a variety of coastal locations from Mississippi to New York\, and have been developing tools to enhance the use of these techniques. \n\nThis webinar will: a) facilitate a candid panel discussion of the lessons learned\, management implications and next steps related to a series of applied research projects\; and b) give audience members the opportunity to engage and ask questions about opportunities and challenges associated with living shorelines. \n\nPanelists: \nChristine Angelini\, University of Florida \nStuart Findlay\, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies \nDenise Sanger\, ACE Basin NERR \nEric Sparks\, Mississippi State University \nJennifer Raulin\, Chesapeake Bay- Maryland NERR \n\nModerator: \nJennifer Read\, Science Collaborative Director

SUMMARY:Presentation:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: The Mechanics of Deformable Semiconductors: Theory and Application to PHV Cells in Bending
DESCRIPTION:Solid Mechanics Laboratory (CNRS-UMR 7649) & Department of Mechanics\, École Polytechnique\, Aerospace Engineering Department & Mechanical Engineering Department\, (Emeritus)\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\n\nSince the early days of semiconductors\, it is known that mechanical strains influence their electronic behavior. Consequently\, a consistent modeling of the coupling between mechanical\, electric and electronic properties of these materials is essential in predicting the effects of mechanical loading on the overall electronic response of semiconductor devices. \n\n	To this end\, we first develop a general fully coupled mechanical\, electrical and electronic continuum model of the finitely deformable semiconductors\, which accounts for the strain-dependence of the band edge energies\, densities of states and electronic mobilities. Governing equations are derived from the appropriate conservation laws using the direct approach (control volume) of continuum thermodynamics. It is found that there exist electronic-induced strains that can be an order of magnitude more than the electromagnetic-induced (Maxwell) ones.\n\n	Next\, motivated by photovoltaics applications involving bending\, we use asymptotic methods in conjunction with the proposed general theory to compute current-voltage characteristic of a p-n junction subjected to non-uniform strains. It is found that for a typical mono-crystalline silicon solar cell\, the dark current changes are rather significant\, of the order of 20% for strains of 0.2%. A series of recent experiments on uniformly strained photovoltaic p-n Si junctions\, show that in spite of the highly complex phenomena involved\, calculations give reasonable results.\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nProf. Triantafyllidis has obtained his Ph.D. in engineering from Brown University in 1980. The same year he joined the faculty of the Aerospace faculty of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor\, MI\, USA from where he retired as emeritus Professor in the Departments of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics. In 2009 he moved to France to become CNRS Director of Research in the Solid Mechanics Laboratory (LMS) and a Professor of Mechanics at the Ecole Polytechnique of France.\n\n His research is in the areas of stability in solids and structures\, structural mechanics and nonlinear continuum mechanics. Over the years he has worked in sheet metal forming problems\, large flexible space structures\, composites and cellular materials\, the geomechanics of the earth’s crust and stability issues in homogenization problems. More recently he worked on the thermomechanical stability of shape memory crystals. His recent interests are in multiphysics – i.e. problems involving interactions between mechanical\, electromagnetic and electronic effects in solids – with applications in magneto-elasticity\, electromagnetic forming\, strain effects in semiconductors and flexible photovoltaics as well as in biomechanics.\n\nProf. Triantafyllidis has collaborated extensively with researchers on both sides of the Atlantic and has served\, through different functions\, the international solid mechanics community. His was awarded the Koiter Medal from the ASME and the Doisteau-Blutet Prize from the French Academy of sciences in 2010.

She specializes in sex equality issues under international and domestic (including comparative\, criminal\, and constitutional) law. She pioneered the legal claim for sexual harassment and\, with Andrea Dworkin\, created ordinances recognizing pornography as a civil rights violation and the Swedish model for abolishing prostitution. The Supreme Court of Canada has largely accepted her approaches to equality\, pornography\, and hate speech\, which have been influential internationally as well. Representing Bosnian women survivors of Serbian genocidal sexual atrocities\, she won with co-counsel a damage award of $745 million in August 2000 in Kadic v. Karadzic under the Alien Tort Act\, the first recognition of rape as an act of genocide. Among the schools at which she has taught are Yale\, Stanford\, Chicago\, Harvard\, Osgoode Hall (Toronto)\, Basel (Switzerland)\, Hebrew University (Jerusalem)\, and Columbia. She was awarded residential fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study\, Stanford\, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin\, and the University of Cambridge. Professor MacKinnon's scholarly books include the casebook Sex Equality (2001/2007)\, Are Women Human? (2006)\, Women's Lives\, Men's Laws (2005)\, Only Words (1993)\, Toward a Feminist Theory of the State (1989)\, Feminism Unmodified (1987)\, and Sexual Harassment of Working Women (1979). She is widely published in journals\, the popular press\, and many languages. Professor MacKinnon practices and consults nationally and internationally and works regularly with Equality Now\, an NGO promoting international sex equality rights for women\, and the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. Serving as the first special gender adviser to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (The Hague) from 2008 to 2012\, she implemented her concept of \"gender crime.\" In 2014\, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of American Law Schools Women's Division and was elected to the American Law Institute. Studies document that Professor MacKinnon is among the most widely-cited legal scholars in the English language. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Legacy of Colonial Medicine in Central Africa\n\nAbstract: Between 1921 and 1956\, French colonial governments organized medical campaigns to treat and prevent sleeping sickness. Villagers were forcibly examined and injected with medications with severe\, sometimes fatal\, side effects. We digitized thirty years of archival records to document the locations of campaign visits at a granular geographic level for five central African countries. We find that greater historical exposure to the campaigns reduces trust in medicine -- measured by willingness to consent to a free\, non-invasive blood test -- and decreases vaccination rates. The resulting mistrust is specific to the medical sector. We examine relevance for present-day health initiatives\; we find that World Bank projects in the health sector are less successful in areas with greater exposure to the campaigns.

SUMMARY:Other:Nanoscale Imaging of Chemical Reactivity using Single-Particle Fluorescence Microscopy
DESCRIPTION: I will describe our group’s efforts to understand heterogeneity in the chemical reactivity of semiconductor nanocrystals by imaging reaction events one at a time. In one project\, we have used the change in fluorescence intensity to image the transformation of individual lead bromide (PbBr2) nanocrystals to methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3) via intercalation of CH3NH3Br. Analyzing this reaction one nanocrystal at a time reveals information that is masked when the fluorescence intensity is averaged over many particles. Sharp rises in the intensity of single nanocrystals indicate they transform much faster than the time it takes for the ensemble average to transform. Based on these observations\, we propose a phase-transformation model in which the solid-state immiscibility between PbBr2 and CH3NH3PbBr3 initially create a high energy barrier for ion intercalation. \nIn related work\, we have used chemically-triggered fluorogenic probes to study the spatial distribution of catalytically active regions in individual tungsten oxide nanowires using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Activation of the first probe molecule requires photoexcitation above the bandgap of the semiconductor to generate hydroxyl radicals. The second reaction does not require photoexcitation but instead relies on the presence of either oxygen vacancies or hydroxyl groups at the surface of the nanowires. Through quantitative\, coordinate-based colocalization of probe molecules activated by the same nanowires\, we demonstrate that the nanoscale regions most active for the photocatalytic generation of hydroxyl radicals also possess a greater concentration of oxygen vacancies.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nBryce Sadtler (Washington University in St. Louis)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The 2019 Miller Converse Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Diana Mutz (University of Pennsylvania)\n\nAbstract: Drawing on evidence from her book in progress\, Mutz presents survey and experimental evidence on the psychological underpinnings of attitudes toward international trade. Picking up where economic explanations have failed\, she argues that people extend what they know about human interaction to understand international relationships. In this respect\, globalization runs headlong against the grain of much of basic human psychology\, asking us to trust distant\, impersonal and often dissimilar others.\n\nA livestream and recording of this event will be available.

SUMMARY:Other:US/Brazil Bromance: What's in Store for Us?
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC LIVE RECORDING OF THE PODCAST: AMERICAN DIPLOMAT \n\nJoin the Weiser Diplomacy Center and American Academy of Diplomacy for a live recording of the latest episode of the podcast American Diplomat: The Stories behind the news. Ambassador Peter F. Romero and writer Laura Bennett will host Ambassador Thomas A. Shannon and discuss about current issues in Brazil from the vantage point of two practitioners who have spent decades in this region of the world. What conditions in Brazil gave rise to the election of Jair Bolsonaro? Are there any parallels with the election of Donald Trump? What can we expect from the Trump/Bolsonaro bromance and does this threaten democracy in our two countries?\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Check out the previous episodes of American Diplomat podcast here: https://www.amdipstories.org/ and post your questions in advance by clicking \"Send a voice message to The American Diplomat\".\n\nAmbassador Thomas A. Shannon\, Jr. \nbrings more than three decades of government service and diplomatic experience to his practice\, providing strategic counsel to clients across a range of legislative\, foreign policy\, and national security issues. Most recently\, Ambassador Shannon served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs\, the third highest ranking position at the State Department. Holding the personal rank of Career Ambassador\, he was the highest ranking member of the United States Foreign Service\, the country's professional diplomatic corps. During his tenure as Under Secretary\, Ambassador Shannon was in charge of bilateral and multilateral foreign policymaking and implementation\, and oversaw diplomatic activity globally and in our missions to international organizations. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Donald L. Katz Lectureship in Chemical Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Zhenan Bao\nK. K. Lee Professor\, School of Engineering\nSenior Fellow\, Precourt Institute for Energy \nStanford University\n\nABSTRACTS\n\nLecture 1: April 11\, 2019\, 5:30 pm \nGlick Ballroom\, Postma Family Clubhouse\n\nSkin-Inspired Electronics\n \nSkin is the body’s largest organ\, and is responsible for the transduction of a vast amount of information. This conformable\, stretchable\, self-healable and biodegradable material simultaneously collects signals from external stimuli that translate into information such as pressure\, pain\, and temperature. The development of electronic materials\, inspired by the complexity of this organ is a tremendous\, unrealized materials challenge. However\, the advent of organic-based electronic materials may offer a potential solution to this longstanding problem. In this talk\, I will describe the design of organic electronic materials to mimic skin functions. These new materials and new devices enabled arrange of new applications in medical devices\, robotics and wearable electronics.\n \n\n\n \nLecture 2: April 12\, 2019\, 9:00 am\nResearch Auditorium\, B10 Research Auditorium\n\nSkin-Inspired Electronic Material Design\n\nFuture electronics will take more important roles in people’s life. They need to allow more intimate contact with human beings to enable advanced health monitoring\, disease detection\, medical therapies\, and human-machine interfacing. However\, current electronics are rigid\, non-degradable and cannot self-repair\, while the human body is soft\, dynamic\, stretchable\, biodegradable and self-healing. Therefore\, it is critical to develop a new class of electronic materials that incorporate skin-like properties\, including stretchability for conformable integration\, minimal discomfort and suppressed invasive reactions\; self-healing for long-term durability under harsh mechanical conditions\; and biodegradability for reducing environmental impact and obviating the need for secondary device removal for medical implants. These demands have fueled the development of a new generation of electronic materials\, primarily comprised of polymers and polymer composites with both high electrical performance and skin-like properties\, and consequently led to a new paradigm of electronics\, termed “skin-inspired electronics”. In this talk\, I will discuss our general material design concepts to realize skin-like properties without compromising electronic properties. Such fundamental understandings will allow us to further develop skin-inspired materials to meet future requirements for various new applications.\n\nBIO\n\nZhenan Bao joined Stanford University in 2004. She is currently a K.K. Lee Professor in Chemical Engineering\, and with courtesy appointments in Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering. SUMMARY:Performance:Flint
DESCRIPTION:A new play by José Casas\n\nDepartment of Theatre & Drama \n\nIn the style of The Laramie Project\, Flint explores the current state of the Michigan city’s water crisis through narratives based upon and inspired by the lives and stories of people affected by the tragedy. \n\nDepartment of Theatre & Drama faculty member and playwright José Casas defines himself as an issue-based playwright. Casas’s new drama creates a mosaic of a city struggling to survive and present itself to the world by exploring its hidden stories and history. Guest stage director Dexter Singleton\, now based on the East Coast\, grew up in Detroit and has relatives in Flint\, bringing a local touch to the production. With many of the issues remaining unresolved four years out\, Flint serves as a platform for dialogue regarding the future of the city and its resilient residents\, as well as for other communities facing similar problems.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library
DESCRIPTION:A multi-venue exhibition of site-specific installations\, performances\, interventions\, and events by University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students\, Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is curated by Guna Nadarajan\, dean of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan\, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Hatcher Graduate Library\, and the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library. \n\nThe continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment\, distribution\, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result\, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment\, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for/of books and libraries.\n\nBookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Michigan Library\, the University of Michigan Office for Research (UMOR)\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n\n
