SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Athens on the Prairie: An Architecture Tour of Columbus\, IN
DESCRIPTION:Columbus\, Indiana\, a modest industrial city located in southern Indiana\, has amassed a collection of public and private buildings designed by many of the country’s leading architects. Seven buildings are recognized as National Historic Landmarks of modern architecture and numerous others are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.\n\nJ. Irwin Miller\, the head of Cummins Industries\, a company which designs and builds diesel engines\, and a fan of modern architecture\, felt that great architecture would not only enhance the community but also attract a highly qualified\, international workforce to live in soybean country 45 miles south of Indianapolis. \n\nIn the 1950’s the Cummins Foundation agreed to fund the design fees for public schools if they would select architects from a list that Miller had prepared. The architects listed were the leaders in their profession. The program was later expanded to other public and non-profit institutions. \n\nToday\, a collection of outstanding schools\, civic buildings\, and commercial structures are the lasting result of Miller’s vision.\n\nDeparting from Ann Arbor by a first class bus\, we will arrive in the community of West Baden\, IN.\, located in the vicinity of many mineral springs which attracted a large number of visitors and the development of a number of fine hotels and resorts. Outstanding among these is the West Baden Springs Hotel\, where we will be spending the first night. The hotel is known for its atrium\, covered with a 200 foot diameter dome. The hotel is a National Historic Landmark and we will have a guided tour of the facility prior to dinner in the Grand Colonnade.\n\nThe following morning we will return to the bus for a short drive to Columbus. The morning will include a guided bus tour of the architectural treasures of the city. We will pass by some 40 buildings and include an interior tour of some. \n\nAfter lunch in the downtown we will tour the Miller home and gardens. \n\nAfter checking into our hotel we will dine at the historic Upland Brewing Co. restaurant\, a recently renovated structure with its own very interesting history.\n\nThe following morning we will board the bus and return to Ann Arbor.\n\nThe price of the trip includes bus transportation\, hotel and gratuities.\n\nThis trip for those 50 and over will take place Monday through Wednesday\, May 20 through 23\, however you must register for the trip early and there are no refunds without replacements inside 30 days of trip departure.\n\nPlease see the OLLI Web Site for additional information.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Manna Pottery by Rezgar Mamandi
DESCRIPTION:After finding Mannea pottery artifacts at archaeological sites in his hometown of Rabat in the northwest of Kurdistan in Iran\, Rezgar Mamandi discovered his passion for ceramic art. His formal studies in ceramic art technique were in Turkey. Now Mamandi creates Manna Pottery\, decorative and functional ceramics reproduced from 7th century Mannea Art originals. With hand-painted figures\, patterns\, shapes and colors\, each piece is one-of-a-kind with an ancient\, yet contemporary look achieved by using lead-free\, high-fire oxidation glazes. To describe his relationship to art\, Mamandi quotes Thomas Merton: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of presents Art\, Music & Autism: Jazz Musicians in Mixed Media by Juliette Hemingway
DESCRIPTION:In Juliette Hemingway’s work\, viewers can imagine the grumbling tones of a saxophone or the sharp lines of a trombone. The sound is inside the musicians. You may not know the details of their experience or understand it\, but it's visceral. That is what jazz is in Hemingway's work. It is the instinctual part of her life that she gives to viewers as a visual excerpt: a life that revolves around healing\, autism\, creativity and awareness. Jazz and the blue-hued musicians give you a sense of the deep-rooted experiences of her son and what it is to live with autism\, and for her\, straining to look into his secret world. Hemingway is based in Aurora\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. A gender neutral restroom is available on the first floor.\n\nContact Heidi Bennett\, IRWG Event Planner (heidiab@umich.edu) with questions about this exhibition.\n\nCosponsors: Department of Women's Studies\, Stamps School of Art & Design\, Department of English\, Art History\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, Center for the Education of Women+

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Blind House: Utopia and Dystopia in the Age of Radical Transparency
DESCRIPTION:\"Blind House: Utopia and Dystopia in the Age of Radical Transparency\,\" by collaborative artists Paloma Muñoz and Walter Martin\, is a razor-sharp work that brings into question our ideals of house and home\, privacy\, and safety.\n\nThe exhibition combines photographs the artists have envisioned of houses without windows as well an actual glass house planned for the center of the gallery\, revisiting the whole notion of a glass house as an example of sophistication\, luxury\, and modernism.\n\nIn a darkening an era of surveillance and the internet\, for Martin and Muñoz\, \"Blind House\" serves as \"a metaphorical solution to the full on campaign against personal privacy.\" Read the artists' statement at http://myumi.ch/6wxbk

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Science Brown Bag: Relational Meaning in Life and Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Meaning in life has long been argued and found to be important in psychological adjustment and well-being. While personal meaning in life has been well studied as a correlate and predictor of many personal well-being outcomes\, it is unclear how relational meaning in life (i.e.\, the meaning in life that one has through their relationships with others) contributes to well-being\, especially to other relational/interpersonal well-being outcomes (e.g.\, family life satisfaction\, positive relationships\, quality of relationships). In this presentation I will share some of the findings from my dissertations studies. Study 1 sought to examine for the factor structure and reliability of the Relational Meaning in Life Questionnaire (RMLQ). Study 2 sought to examine for the role of the RMLQ in predicting well-being and adjustment outcomes\, above and beyond personal meaning in life. Finally\, Study 3 sought to further examine for the role of the RMLQ in predicting variance in other well-being and adjustment outcomes above and beyond social support. Findings\, implications\, and future directions will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Are Consumers Boundedly Rational?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nBounded rationality is a frequently used construct in both psychology and economics that is generally meant represent the idea that human decisions often deviate from optimal decisions when the decision problem is narrowly and precisely defined\; however\, these decisions are brought into closer alignment when the problem is expanded to include the known constraints of human cognition\, such as the costs of mental effort and the feasibility of computing optimal solutions. In this paper\, I propose a general framework for bounded rationality in which actual thinking and deciding is compared to optimal thinking and deciding. More specifically\, actual learning and inference is compared to Bayesian updating\, actual attention and memory is compared to the full use of available information and rational inattention\, actual planning is compared to forward-looking cost/benefit analysis\, and actual preference and choice are compared to utility maximization. The basis of these comparisons is a set of ten empirical results from my own research. My general conclusions are that\, as humans\, (1) we are very good at selecting important information\, learning from past experience\, and similarity-based reasoning\, and (2) pretty good at verbal and non-verbal communication\, simple symbolic inference and predicting the very near future\, but (3) we are quite poor at complex problem solving and understanding the long-term consequences of our current actions.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Career Aspirations and Choices within Eccles et al. Expectancy-Value Theory
DESCRIPTION:Which occupation to pursue is one of the most consequential decisions people make\, and represents a key developmental task\, with long-term implications for job satisfaction\, job performance\, and psychological wellbeing. Accordingly\, it is important to understand the underlying developmental processes associated with either individual or group differences in occupational choices. Programmatic research grounded in Eccles’ et al. expectancy-value theory (EVT) was designed to contribute towards a better understanding of such choices. The theory’s basic premise is that individuals choose to engage in tasks and activities that have high value to them and at which they expect to succeed. For instance\, individuals who believe to be good at and expect to be successful in math\, and who value math as an academic subject\, should be more likely to pursue and attain math-intensive careers than individuals with less positive math self-perceptions. In addition\, EVT specifies four components of subjective task value (intrinsic interest\, utility\, attainment value\, and cost) and outlines a comprehensive set of their antecedents and consequences. I will present a set of studies\, in which we use EVT to longitudinally investigate the relations between adolescents’ math- and language arts-related expectancy/value beliefs and career aspirations (reported at the end of high school)\, as well as pathways towards adult career attainment (reported about 15 years after high school). Furthermore\, I will focus on potential gender differences in academic self-perceptions and career trajectories\, in particular in math-intensive fields. Finally\, drawing on both EVT and the Dimensional Comparison Theory (DCT) we will examine potential negative cross-domain influences in the prediction of individual career trajectories. For instance\, prior evidence suggests that individuals with high math and high verbal abilities are less likely to attain math-intensive careers than individuals with high math\, but only moderate verbal abilities\; and actual and perceived verbal ability and academic values negatively predict math-related career aspirations. Our research expands upon this evidence by examining analogous longitudinal cross-domain effects for both math- and language arts-related career outcomes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Brown: South Asian Narratives of Brownness in Southeast Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Using an interdisciplinary lens\, the exhibit explores the heterogeneity in the contours of brown narratives among South Asians in the Midwest. Although there is an emerging interest in the social construction of brownness on its own terms\, most of such explorations are situated either in the East or West Coast. Rarely have the narratives of brownness in the Midwest been explored. The Midwest\, particularly Ann Arbor and the greater Detroit area\, has a sizable population of South Asians who work in a variety of blue collar to professional jobs that range from motel cleaners to doctors.\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Ram Mahalingam\, Osman Khan\, and Aswin Punathamebkar.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Data Science at the New York Times
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Data Science group at The New York Times develops and deploys machine learning solutions to newsroom and business problems. Re-framing real-world questions as machine learning tasks requires not only adapting and extending models and algorithms to new or special cases but also sufficient breadth to know the right method for the right challenge. I’ll first outline how unsupervised\, supervised\, and reinforcement learning methods are increasingly used in human applications for description\, prediction\, and prescription\, respectively. I’ll then focus on the ‘prescriptive’ cases\, showing how methods from the reinforcement learning and causal inference literatures can be of direct impact in engineering\, business\, and decision-making more generally.\n\nBio: At Columbia\, Chris is a founding member of the executive committee of the Data Science Institute\, the Department of Systems Biology\, and is affiliated faculty in Statistics. He is a co-founder and co-organizer of hackNY (http://hackNY.org)\, a nonprofit which since 2010 has organized once a semester student hackathons and the hackNY Fellows Program\, a structured summer internship at NYC startups. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia he was a Courant Instructor at NYU (1998-2001) and earned his PhD at Princeton University (1993-1998) in theoretical physics. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and is a recipient of Columbia’s Avanessians Diversity Award.

As NEC director\, Sperling was the President’s economic adviser responsible for coordinating economic policy and chairing policy meetings with the economic cabinet. The New York Times has called Sperling \"a prolific idea generator.\" Under President Obama\, he served as a key negotiator on fiscal issues and an architect of the payroll tax cut\, expansions of tax credits for low-income Americans\, the Small Business Jobs Act and the American Jobs Act. Under President Clinton\, Sperling was a key architect of the 1993 Deficit Reduction Act and its major expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and a top negotiator of the 1997 Bipartisan Balanced Budget Act\, He also served as senior counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner\, where he helped navigate the financial crisis and was a member of the President’s Auto Task Force and the Treasury’s point person for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). \n\nCurrently\, Sperling heads Sperling Economic Strategies and writes as a contributing editor for The Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Significant Excess of Electron-Like Events from the MiniBooNE Short-Baseline Neutrino Experiment
DESCRIPTION:The MiniBooNE short-baseline neutrino experiment at Fermilab observes a significant excess of electron-like events. From 2.4E21 protons on target in neutrino and antineutrino mode\, a total electron-neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic excess of 460.5 +- 99.0 events (4.7 sigma) is observed in the neutrino energy range from 200-1250 MeV. If interpreted in a standard two-neutrino oscillation model\, the best oscillation fit to the excess has a probability of 21.1%\, while the background-only fit has a chisquare probability of 6E-7 relative to the best fit. The MiniBooNE data are consistent in energy and magnitude with the excess of events reported by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND)\, and the significance of the combined LSND and MiniBooNE excesses is 6 sigma. All of the major backgrounds are constrained by in-situ event measurements\, so non-oscillation explanations would need to invoke new anomalous background processes.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Queer Art of Dying in Video Games
DESCRIPTION:What can video games teach us about death and dying in the real world? Amanda Phillips\, assistant professor of English\, Film & Media Studies at Georgetown University\, looks at the queer bodily configurations that emerge from dying in video games\, from unnaturally flexible ragdoll physics to invasive and spectacular x-ray visions.\n\nExamining the queer art of dying in video games helps us think about how power is written on the digital body through the norming procedures that structure both computers and games. From there\, we can find new ways to think about the politics of life and death in the real world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Politics Goes Pear Shaped. Old Regime Cultures and Revolutionary Politics\, ca. 1792-1825
DESCRIPTION:Can the story of a pear help us understand the rise of democracy in the West? This talk uses the career of Louis-Augustin Bosc\, a French revolutionary and botanist—and namesake of the familiar pear—to explore the ambiguous political legacy of the Atlantic revolutions. The talk argues that revolutionary movements in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were united not just by a set of similar political structures and ideologies but by their reliance on a matrix of old regime\, eighteenth-century cultural practices. These old regime practices left a common and illiberal stamp on the polities and political traditions that they helped to create. \n \nNathan Perl-Rosenthal is a historian of the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Atlantic world. He focuses on the political and cultural history of Europe and the Americas in the age of revolution\, with particular attention to the transnational influences that shaped modern national politics. He received his PhD in history from Columbia University in 2011\, with a dissertation on epistolarity and revolutionary organizing\, and then in 2015 published a first book on a different topic: \"Citizen Sailors: Becoming American in the Age of Revolution\" (Belknap/Harvard). His current book project is a wide-angle cultural history of the Atlantic age of revolutions\, from the 1760s through the 1820s\, which rethinks the era’s role in creating modern democratic politics. Nathan also maintains interests in early modern legal history\; historical methods and historiography\; and histories of material culture. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to weisercenter@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Presentation:The Threat of Fascism and How to Fight It
DESCRIPTION:Across the world\, the far-right occupies positions of power it has not held since World War Two. With social inequality reaching astronomical proportions\, the ruling elites are resurrecting all the political filth responsible for the worst crimes of the 20th century.\n\nIn Germany\, the scene of the holocaust and Hitler’s Nazi movement\, fascism is once again rearing its ugly head. A neo-Nazi party\, the Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD)\, is now the main opposition party with high-level support from within the state and academia. Building a mass movement capable of defeating fascism requires learning the lessons of history.\n\nThe lessons of the 1930s show that the fight against fascism requires the independent mobilization of the working class against the capitalist system. Learning these critical lessons is the only way to prevent the disaster of Nazism on an even greater scale today.\n\n* * *\nSpeaker: Christoph Vandreier\, German Trotskyist\, prominent leader of the fight against fascism and author of “Why Are They Back? Historical Falsification\, Political Conspiracy\, and the Return of Fascism in Germany.”\n\nVandreier is Deputy National secretary of the Sozialistiche Gleichheitspartei (Socialist Equality Party\, SGP) in Germany\, which was placed under state surveillance on advise of the neo-Nazi AfD for its “anti-fascist” and “anti-capitalist” politics.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library
DESCRIPTION:A multi-venue exhibition of site-specific installations\, performances\, interventions\, and events by University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students\, Bookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is curated by Guna Nadarajan\, dean of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan\, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Hatcher Graduate Library\, and the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library. \n\nThe continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment\, distribution\, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result\, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment\, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for/of books and libraries.\n\nBookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, the University of Michigan Library\, the University of Michigan Office for Research (UMOR)\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n\n
