Alluding to feelings of pain, otherness, power and triumph, \"she was here, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\r\n\r\nIn summer 2018, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement, sound, and solidarity, eight Black women and girls, wearing large needle felted wool masks, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\r\n\r\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film, mini documentary, photography, and performance masks, on display in her solo exhibition, \"she was here, once\" in Lane Hall.\r\n\r\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. These microbes are thought to play important roles in maintenance of oral health. An equally prevalent phenomenon in the oral environment is the presence of dental biofilm, which makes the bacterial association with tissues multifaceted and prone to many diseases. A recent study suggests that the oral microbiome changes its biofilm associated bacterial population from predominantly Gram-positive bacteria in healthy individuals, to predominantly Gram-negative pathogens in cases with periodontitis.Moreover, almost all dental infections are caused by biofilms consisting of a multispecies community, which makes the system far more resilient from an infectious disease perspective.\r\n\r\nHerein, we describe a robust high throughput antibacterial discovery platform involving key virulence and resistance mechanisms as targets against a consortium of three microbes namely, Actinomyces viscosus, Streptococcus oralis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. However, the interaction of these autonomous systems with humans remains an open challenge. Several examples of this challenge include the interaction between the pilot and autonomous system in transport aircraft and the interaction between autonomous cars and pedestrians. The interaction challenge arises for a number of reasons, including a lack of mathematical models for human behavior and the need for a massive amount of data required to safely account for all potential interactions. The first half of this talk focuses on one aspect of this challenge, developing a mathematical model for a pedestrian's behavior and studying its interaction with an automated vehicle at a mid-block, unsignalized intersection. By modeling pedestrian behavior through the concept of gap acceptance, we show that a hybrid controller with just four distinct modes allows an autonomous vehicle to successfully interact with a pedestrian across a continuous spectrum of possible crosswalk entry behaviors. The controller is validated through extensive simulation and compared to an alternate POMDP solution, with experimental results provided on a Hyundai research vehicle for a virtual pedestrian. The second half of this talk will focus on another contribution related to automated driving - a feedback-feedforward steering algorithm that enables an autonomous vehicle to accurately follow a specified trajectory at the friction limits while preserving robust stability margins. Experimental data collected from an Audi TTS driving at the handling limits (0.95 g) on a full length race circuit will demonstrate the performance of the controller design.\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker...\r\n\r\nDr. Nitin Kapania is a postdoctoral fellow with joint appointments at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests are centered on the planning and control of automated vehicles, with an emphasis on building trust in autonomy by developing algorithms that match or even exceed the performance of the best human drivers. He completed his PhD from Stanford University in 2016, after which he served as a lecturer at Stanford, teaching Vehicle Dynamics and Control. The exhibition will be located in several locations within Shapiro Undergraduate Library, Hatcher Graduate Library, and the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library. \r\n\r\nThe continued proliferation of digital formats and systems for the embodiment, distribution, and delivery of knowledge increasingly displace the book as form. As a result, the spacial limitations of libraries are challenged. The value of the book and the function of the library demand cultural attention. In this moment, we ask ourselves: what is the future of the library? What is the future of the book? This exhibition seeks to instigate and showcase creative responses to the challenges to the book and the library in the forms we have inherited as well as to project ways of reimagining futures for\/of books and libraries.\r\n\r\nBookmarks: Speculating the Futures of the Book and Library is supported by the Penny W.
