In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. The rich fabric is created through a remarkable and  laborious process: from pattern design and cotton-thread binding\, to over 100 rounds of plant and mud dyeing and weaving. This series of steps may take up to one year. Despite the high production values and complexities\, Oshima Tsumugi kimono can be worn only for non-ceremonial occasions\, since woven fabric is considered to be a less elevated technique than paint-dyed fabric.\n \nThis special installation introduces UMMA audiences to one of the ten exceptional Oshima Tsumugi kimono recently donated to the Museum by Kazuko Miyake. Using both original material and standards from many genres they have arranged in a personal style\, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of the duo. Jacob Warren plays double bass\, while Grant Flick plays violin\, tenor guitar and mandolin. Currently based out of Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, the two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition\, and performance training. A part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia\, AMS is led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall with the help of guitarist Julian Lage.\n \nAfter discovering their shared musical interests\, Jacob and Grant began collaborating as a duo as well as in larger projects including The Leafless and Westbound Situation\, both comprised of former AMS participants. Out of the heart of the Midwest\, two veteran Michigan duos join forces in a new quartet/quintet: Diamonds in the Rust. In what began simply as an idea to tour together\, Annie & Rod Capps and Jan Krist & Jim Bizer (along with percussionist/composer Alan Finkbeiner) have formed a new band. With each member already well known for performing prowess\, the new group promises to be that much more. Everyone sings\, everyone plays multiple instruments\, and the band boasts a trio of respected\, award-winning songwriters.
