DESCRIPTION:Port Huron\, the largest and oldest Blue Water community on Lake Huron\, is considered the maritime capital of the Great Lakes. It is home to the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse\, the oldest lighthouse in Michigan. Where the water was too deep to construct a physical lighthouse\, we find the Huron Lightship\, an anchored “floating lighthouse.” \n\nThe Carnegie Center\, also known as the Port Huron Museum\, is proud to display the largest ship model collection throughout Michigan. The Museum is home to objects and archival items relating to pre-history\, history\, and culture of the Blue Water area. \n\nThomas Edison spent much of his childhood in Port Huron. The Thomas Edison Depot Museum was established inside the very depot where Edison worked as a news reporter from 1860 to 1863. It stands directly behind the Blue Water Bridge and contains hands-on exhibits of his experiments and inventions. \n\nPlan to join us on this upcoming summer-day treat. Lunch will be at Freighters Restaurant. Box dinners\, prepared by Freighters\, will be available on the bus on the return trip to Ann Arbor. Closed toe shoes are required for the tour.\n\nRegistrants for this trip can attend the pre-trip event\, “The Michigan Lighthouse Landmark Legacy” on May 29 free\, but they must still register for the event.\n\nThe price of the trip includes bus transportation\, lunch\, snacks\, gratuities.\n\nThis trip for those 50 and over will take place on Tuesday\, August 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.\, however you must register for the trip early and there are no refunds without replacements inside 30 days of trip departure.\n\nPlease see the OLLI Web Site for additional information.

DESCRIPTION:Two U-M alums\, Jonathan B. Wright\, a life-long Ann Arborite\, and his wife Kathleen Wright\, have been finding evidence of fairies in their home since 1993. In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. He studied graphic design\, architecture and illustration\, while Kathleen is a teacher of young children\, a writer and professional storyteller. Together they discover the stories behind the fairy doors. DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Bieri’s art practice begins with the simple act of hand sewing. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. DESCRIPTION:Each of Laurie LeBreton’s paper tapestries are a kind of meditation or prayer. Some works she created to reach out to a greater power\, while others honor a particular person or joyful time. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. DESCRIPTION:Born in Houston\, Texas\, one of the most colorful cities in the U.S.\, J. Howard recognizes that color is important in the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, our homes\, our cars\, and even our pets. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. She uses the beauty and intense color of organic soft pastels to elicit emotional responses from viewers\, recognizing and working with the inherent qualities of color. DESCRIPTION:Ronaldo Byrd was born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York and now resides in Burlington\, New Jersey with his mother and three younger siblings. Byrd's main medium is acrylic on foamboard\, and his process involves observation of the world and the people in it. His paintings depict his ideal world and how its inhabitants should treat each other. Byrd is known as the Artist of Happiness and the overall theme of his paintings is love and acceptance. DESCRIPTION:Raymond Gaynor\, from Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, has been practicing art photography for over 25 years. This exhibition of photographic works from 12 U.S. National Parks captures both iconic and unique landscape scenes. Gaynor chooses subjects that have a sense of solace and rejuvenation. One of his goals is to give the viewer an opportunity to imagine what it would be like to be the one looking through the camera lens while composing and capturing an image. He hopes to evoke emotions\, memories\, and a desire to witness firsthand the beauty of the National Parks. SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Nancy Savoca aims to be as authentic as possible. Her films are brilliant\, intimate portraits that explore the weight of social institutions and social injustice placed upon the shoulders of her characters. Her lead characters\, typically women\, must balance their needs with those of others in order to find their true voice. This U-M student-curated exhibit is the result of a semester-long course devoted to her films and career.\n\nSavoca contributed her papers — spanning her career as a director\, producer\, and screenwriter — to the Screens Arts Mavericks & Makers collection at the U-M Library. DESCRIPTION:This course introduces the skills needed to conduct focus group interviews. Students will learn about the critical components of successful focus group research. They will develop a plan for a focus group study and then practice key skills. Attention will be placed on moderating\, recruiting\, developing questions\, and analysis of focus groups. This course will be particularly applicable for those conducting focus group research in academic\, non-profit\, and government settings.\n\nCourse Topics:\n\nThe course will cover these skills:\n\n    Planning—When to use focus groups and designing a study\n    Recruiting—Identifying information-rich participants and getting them to show up\n    Hosting—Creating a permissive and nonthreatening environment\n    Moderating—The crucial first few minutes and moderating techniques\n    Developing questions—Characteristics of good focus group questions\n    Analyzing—Options for analysis\n    Reporting—Options for sharing what was learned\n\nCourse Format\n\nThe course format includes daily lectures along with opportunities to practice critical skills in small groups.\n\nWhy Take This Course?\n\nFocus groups are used to understand issues\, pilot test ideas\, and evaluate programs. Labadie Collection in the U-M Library is one of the world's most complete collections of anarchist thought and contains more original Emma Goldman material than any other U.S. library. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Data Collection Methods
DESCRIPTION:This course reviews a range of survey data collection methods that are both interview-based (face-to-face and telephone) and self-administered (questionnaires that are mailed and online\, i.e.\, web surveys). Mixed mode designs are also covered as well as several hybrid modes for collecting sensitive information e.g.\, self-administering the sensitive questions in what is otherwise a face-to-face interview. The course also covers newer methods such as mobile web and SMS (text message) interviews\, and examines alternative data sources such as social media. It concentrates on the impact these techniques have on the quality of survey data\, including error from measurement\, nonresponse\, and coverage\, and assesses the tradeoffs between these error sources when researchers choose a mode or survey design. This is not a how-to-do-it course on survey data collection\, but rather focuses on the error properties of key aspects of the data collection process.\n\nStudents will view recorded lectures and complete reading assignments in preparation for class discussion sessions which will occur twice per week\, one hour per session.  Students are expected to attend all discussion sessions either in person or via BlueJeans.  Successful discussion sessions will occur through preparation and active participation by all participants enrolled in the course.  Students should have questions or discussion topics in mind for the class sessions.\n\nRemote participation option:  It is not necessary to be physically in Ann Arbor to take the course.  Students who cannot be in Ann Arbor can enroll and join discussion sessions via  BlueJeans (https://www.bluejeans.com/).\n\nOnce enrollment is confirmed via email\, indicate if course attendance will be in person\, in Ann Arbor or via BlueJeans.\n\nPrerequisite: An introductory course in survey research methods or equivalent experience.  If joining remotely\, participant must have computer\, camera and headset available to join the class via BlueJeans (https://www.bluejeans.com/)\nThis class meets June 3-July 24 on Monday and Wednesday from 3:00pm-4:00pm
