DESCRIPTION:The Glass Academy is a private\, modern-day studio in Dearborn. Co-creators and founders Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin share the love of glass art and traditional glass blowing methods with the community thru various art projects\, installations and seasonal events. Formally trained at College for Creative Studies\, Alfred University\, Pilchuck\, Penland and Haystack\, Nordin and Plucinsky have over 60 years of combined glass experience. During the day\, the hot shop team manufactures glass items designed by the founding artists to sell in the studio’s 4\,000 sq. ft. gallery. DESCRIPTION:Two U-M alums\, Jonathan B. Wright\, a life-long Ann Arborite\, and his wife Kathleen Wright\, have been finding evidence of fairies in their home since 1993. In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. He studied graphic design\, architecture and illustration\, while Kathleen is a teacher of young children\, a writer and professional storyteller. Together they discover the stories behind the fairy doors. DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Bieri’s art practice begins with the simple act of hand sewing. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. DESCRIPTION:Each of Laurie LeBreton’s paper tapestries are a kind of meditation or prayer. Some works she created to reach out to a greater power\, while others honor a particular person or joyful time. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. DESCRIPTION:Born in Houston\, Texas\, one of the most colorful cities in the U.S.\, J. Howard recognizes that color is important in the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, our homes\, our cars\, and even our pets. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. She uses the beauty and intense color of organic soft pastels to elicit emotional responses from viewers\, recognizing and working with the inherent qualities of color. Byrd's main medium is acrylic on foamboard\, and his process involves observation of the world and the people in it. His paintings depict his ideal world and how its inhabitants should treat each other. Byrd is known as the Artist of Happiness and the overall theme of his paintings is love and acceptance. DESCRIPTION:Raymond Gaynor\, from Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, has been practicing art photography for over 25 years. This exhibition of photographic works from 12 U.S. National Parks captures both iconic and unique landscape scenes. Gaynor chooses subjects that have a sense of solace and rejuvenation. One of his goals is to give the viewer an opportunity to imagine what it would be like to be the one looking through the camera lens while composing and capturing an image. SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Although we often associate the Romans with white marble statues\, these statues — as well as Roman homes\, clothing\, and art — were vibrant with color. This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world\, how these colors were produced\, where they were found\, what the Romans thought about them\, and how we study them today. DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop will introduce students to different methods of collecting data in the social sciences. Surveys are the most common form of collecting primary data in many disciplines\, and this course will provide students with an overview of interview-administered (face-to-face and telephone) and self-administered (mail\, web\, mobile web\, and SMS) survey data collection as well as the combination of multiple modes (mixed mode surveys). The course will in particular discuss the implication of survey design decisions on data quality. In addition\, students will also receive an overview on alternative data sources (e.g.\, passive measurement\, social media and administrative data) and how they can be used in combination with traditional survey data.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Non-Probability Sampling Methods
DESCRIPTION:Probability and Non-probability Sampling Methods is a sampling course that differs from traditional sampling classes. First\, this class gives an equal amount of attention to both probability and non-probability sampling methods as non-probability sampling cannot be discussed meaningfully without understanding probability sampling and these two methods offer distinctive advantages and disadvantages. Second\, this class will combine theoretical/conceptual parts of sampling through lectures and practical applications of different approaches through lab sessions.\n\nThe course will start with examining probability sampling techniques and their properties\, including simple random selection\, systematic selection\, cluster sampling\, stratified sampling\, and probability proportionate to size selection. Issues of weighting to compensate for unequal chances of selection and variance estimation for calculating confidence intervals are also examined.  Then the wide variety of non-probability sampling methods are examined\, from panel-based convenience samples\, to river samples\, quota samples\, respondent-driven samples\, and other techniques. The properties of these samples are discussed\, and assumptions needed to obtain estimates are examined. We will also examine these two approaches from the total survey error perspectives.\n\nThe lab sessions to be held after each class will combine R programming and group discussions on the topics that need to be considered when implementing various sampling approaches. Hands-on examples of frame preparation\, sample draws\, post-survey adjustments and analysis specific to design will be provided and discussed.\n\nThe course is not designed to provide the mastery of survey sampling. Rather\, it provides materials that will accommodate participants to become familiar with advantages and disadvantages of the two methods and their implementation which will allow them to make informed design decisions.

DESCRIPTION:The course focuses on the design of Web survey instruments and procedures. The course covers all aspects of instrument design for Web surveys\, including the appropriate use of various input tools (e.g.\, radio buttons\, check boxes) for Web surveys\, general formatting and layout issues\, movement through the instrument (action buttons\, navigation\, error messages)\, and so on. The course draws on empirical results from experiments on alternative design approaches as well as practical experience in the design and implementation of a wide variety of Web surveys. The course also covers the challenges of designing Web surveys for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets)\, and the collection and use of paradata to evaluate Web survey instruments. The course does not focus on the technical aspects of Web survey implementation\, such as hardware\, software or programming. It also does not focus on general survey design or questionnaire design – participants are expected to have some familiarity with surveys.

DESCRIPTION:The Joseph A. Labadie Collection in the U-M Library is one of the world's most complete collections of anarchist thought and contains more original Emma Goldman material than any other U.S. library. In commemoration of her 150th birthday\, we will display a selection of these artifacts\, including her Russian passport and original writings. The exhibit will showcase materials related to her travels in Ann Arbor and Detroit\, life in Russia\, relationships with other well-known anarchists\, and representation in popular culture today.

DESCRIPTION:The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history.  During a 23-year career with the Clements\, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps\, head of research and publications\, associate director\, and acting director.  Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well\, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting\, conservation\, solving mysteries\, and more. \n\nDunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts\, striking visual imagery and cartography\, and some of his favorite materials from the collections\, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. DESCRIPTION:Jason DeMarte: Garden of Artificial Delights presents an enigmatic world filled with unexpected and unsettling sensory temptations. In this immersive installation of photographs and wallpaper\, Michigan-based photographer Jason DeMarte weaves together detailed images of fauna (birds\, caterpillars\, and moths) and flora (local plants and flowers). Each scene is set against ominous cloudy skies\, which rain melted ice cream\, whipped topping\, candies\, and glossy paint. Overburdened with decorations\, the flowers and plants begin to decay\, leaving the birds and insects unable to survive for long in this overly sweet environment. DeMarte’s illusionistic landscapes recall the long tradition of still life painting in Europe and America\, and a rich history of fantasy environments represented in literature and film—from Alice’s Wonderland to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Egon Schiele
DESCRIPTION:Egon Schiele (1890-1918)\, one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism\, made more than 3\,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka\, George Grosz\, and Gustav Klimt\, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.        \n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:An Introduction to Big Data and Machine Learning for Survey Researchers and Social Scientists
DESCRIPTION:The amount of data generated as a by-product in society is growing fast including data from satellites\, sensors\, transactions\, social media and smartphones\, just to name a few. Such data are often referred to as \"big data\"\, and can be used to create value in different areas such as health and crime prevention\, commerce and fraud detection.  An emerging practice in many areas is to append or link big data sources with more specific and smaller scale sources that often contain much more limited information.  This practice has been used for some time by survey researchers in constructing frames by appending auxiliary information that is often not directly available on the frame\, but can be obtained from an external source.   Using Big Data has the potential to go beyond the sampling phase for survey researchers and in fact has the potential to influence the social sciences in general.  Big Data is of interest for public opinion researchers and agencies that produce statistics to find alternative data sources either to reduce costs\, to improve estimates or to produce estimates in a more timely fashion. However\, Big Data pose several interesting and new challenges to survey researchers and social scientists among others who want to extract information from data. As Robert Groves (2012) pointedly commented\, the era is “appropriately called Big Data and not Big Information”\, because there is a lot of work for analysts before information can be gained from “auxiliary traces of some process that is going on in society.”  \n\nThis course offers participants a broad overview of big data sources\, opportunities and examples motivated within the survey and social science contexts including the use of social media data\, para data and other such sources.  This course also offers a detailed\, practical introduction to four common machine learning methods that can be applied to big and small data alike at various aspects of a study’s lifecycle from design to nonresponse adjustments to propensity score matching to weighting and evaluation and analysis.  The machine learning methods will be demonstrated in R and we will provide several different examples of using these methods along with multiple packages in R that offer these methods. \n\nIf you wish to take this course for academic credit you must also enroll in A Virtually Syntax Free Practical Introduction to Web Scrapping for Survey and Social Science Researchers.\n\nPrerequisite: Basic proficiency in R (i.e. how to load a package\, launch it and basic R syntax knowledge)

DESCRIPTION:Delbert McClinton grew up singing and playing in the gutbucket clubs of Fort Worth\, and in a sense he's never left. He still has a voice that will roar through the noise of a barroom or through any kind of mental clutter you might bring to one of his concerts. Delbert and his band backed the absolute royalty of deep blues as they came through town—Jimmy Reed\, Sonny Boy Williamson\, Bobby \"Blue\" Bland\, and the incomparable Howlin' Wolf—and all that he saw and heard\, he absorbed and passes along in his own music. (He gave John Lennon some pointers on the harmonica\, to boot.) Delbert hasn't slowed down a bit\, and his shows are an Ark tradition. So don't delay on getting tickets! Delbert is coming to town with an as-yet-untitled new release.
