The materials collected in this exhibit, all held in the Special Collections Research Center, showcase not only the variety, beauty, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic, but more often both combine in writers\u2019 and artists\u2019 resistance to mass-market, industrial, bourgeois, and nationalist print cultures.\r\n\r\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism, decadence, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek, Bieri\u2019s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. Moncrief Chair in Simulation Based Engineering Sciences\r\nProfessor of Biomedical Engineering\r\nOden Institute for Computational Sciences and Engineering\r\nThe University of Texas at Austin\r\n\t \r\n\u201cStructural remodeling and volumetric growth in the heart\u201d\r\n\r\nAbstract: \r\n\r\nMany cardiac diseases impose pressure overload leading to ventricular enlargement via the growth of cardiac myocytes and remodeling of the collagen fiber architecture. One such disease is pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which primarily affects the right ventricle (RV). The effects of PAH on the functional behavior of the RV free wall (RVFW) on RV organ-level cardiac function remain largely unexplored. Computational rodent heart models (RHM) of the normal and hypertensive states can be quite valuable in gaining insights into the pathophysiology of myocardium remodeling. Recently, we developed high-fidelity biventricular finite-element RHMs using extensive data collected from rat hearts at normal and post-PAH time points. In this study, we extended our model to predict the time-course adaptations of RV under PAH from normal state to post-PAH state. Our model accounted for growth processes driven by sarcomerogenesis and collagen fibrosis, coupled with myo- and collagen fiber reorientation events. We used our model to investigate the correlations between the alterations in the wall stress, the remodeling of the RVFW microstructure, and the shape changes in the RV during the development of PAH. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to investigate the interaction between fiber remodeling and volumetric growth in the heart. Ultimately, the detailed description of organ-level remodeling patterns predicted by in-silico models such as ours could replace the traditional measures of RV dimensions and volume that often lead to gross and limited information on cardiac performance. Refreshments will be served. \r\n\r\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer\u2019s Narrative Art, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism, postmodernism, Shakespeare and Rome, the heritage of Greece, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts, visual arts, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship, the Rackham Prize twice, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. This talk is based on research in the Social Sciences - particularly Psychology, Sociology, Economics - and how it applies to education and careers in aerospace engineering.\r\n\r\nFor the past five years, I have been part of a group of Michigan professors who read this social science literature, and meet to discuss its implications on academic careers - teaching, research, service and hiring of faculty. We also give talks about why and how to improve diversity in faculty hiring to faculty throughout the university, department chairs and deans, and faculty at other universities.\r\n\r\nIn this talk, I will present some classical and recent social science research about issues that affect our ability to hire and retain a diverse and excellent faculty, particularly in STEM fields, and especially in aerospace engineering. Topics will include implicit bias, stereotype threat, accumulation of disadvantage, and some of the steps we are taking as a university to improve the composition of the faculty. I will also present data about the demographics of the aerospace field, and give you some strategies for being a part of the much-needed solution to Aerospace's diversity challenges.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker...\r\n\r\nProfessor Powell is a member and past director of the W. M. Keck Foundation Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, and a co-founder and co-director of the Center for Space Environment Modeling and the the Center for Radiative Shock Hydrodynamics. At the undergraduate level, he teaches freshman computing, compressible flow, aerodynamics and aircraft design; at the graduate level, he teaches aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. His research interests include: algorithm development for fluid dynamics, aerodynamics and plasmadynamics; and the application of computational methods to problems in aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, fluid dynamics and space environment\/space weather. His articles appear in Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Computational Physics, and Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, among others. He is also a co-author of Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics. Such heterostructures enable the isolation and protection of air sensitive 2D materials as well as provide new degrees of freedom for tailoring electronic structure and interactions. First, un-doped monolayer WTe_2 exhibits behaviors characteristic of a 2D topological insulator, including edge mode transport approaching the quantum of conductance up to nearly 100 Kelvin.
