SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

DESCRIPTION:The Glass Academy is a private\, modern-day studio in Dearborn. Co-creators and founders Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin share the love of glass art and traditional glass blowing methods with the community thru various art projects\, installations and seasonal events. Formally trained at College for Creative Studies\, Alfred University\, Pilchuck\, Penland and Haystack\, Nordin and Plucinsky have over 60 years of combined glass experience. During the day\, the hot shop team manufactures glass items designed by the founding artists to sell in the studio’s 4\,000 sq. ft. gallery. DESCRIPTION:Two U-M alums\, Jonathan B. Wright\, a life-long Ann Arborite\, and his wife Kathleen Wright\, have been finding evidence of fairies in their home since 1993. In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. He studied graphic design\, architecture and illustration\, while Kathleen is a teacher of young children\, a writer and professional storyteller. Together they discover the stories behind the fairy doors. DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Bieri’s art practice begins with the simple act of hand sewing. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. DESCRIPTION:Each of Laurie LeBreton’s paper tapestries are a kind of meditation or prayer. Some works she created to reach out to a greater power\, while others honor a particular person or joyful time. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. DESCRIPTION:Born in Houston\, Texas\, one of the most colorful cities in the U.S.\, J. Howard recognizes that color is important in the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, our homes\, our cars\, and even our pets. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. She uses the beauty and intense color of organic soft pastels to elicit emotional responses from viewers\, recognizing and working with the inherent qualities of color. His paintings depict his ideal world and how its inhabitants should treat each other. Byrd is known as the Artist of Happiness and the overall theme of his paintings is love and acceptance. DESCRIPTION:Raymond Gaynor\, from Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, has been practicing art photography for over 25 years. This exhibition of photographic works from 12 U.S. National Parks captures both iconic and unique landscape scenes. Gaynor chooses subjects that have a sense of solace and rejuvenation. One of his goals is to give the viewer an opportunity to imagine what it would be like to be the one looking through the camera lens while composing and capturing an image. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe extent of price dispersion in the US residential mortgage market cannot be fully explained by dispersion in conventionally measured creditworthiness. Using a merged survey and administrative dataset with data on consumer search intensity\, I show that consumer failure to recall the interest rate is associated with paying a much higher rate. I estimate a structural model of sequential search in which recall/non-recall of the interest rate forms a consumer type known to firms. Price discrimination explains 90 percent of the interest rate penalty paid by the inattentive consumer type\, with differences in consumer preferences and search behavior explaining the remainder.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter.  She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space.  She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. She also maintains a personal website\, cynthiasowers.rc.lsa.umich.edu\, where she publishes essays\, poetry\, and visual artwork.

Though widely used in various fields\, such restricted latent class models suffer from nonidentifiability due to the models' discrete nature and complex restricted structure. This talk addresses the fundamental identifiability issue of restricted latent class models by developing a general framework for strict and partial identifiability of the model parameters. The developed identifiability conditions only depend on the design matrix and are easily checkable\, which provides useful practical guidelines for designing statistically valid diagnostic tests. Furthermore\, the new theoretical framework is applied to establish\, for the first time\, identifiability of several designs from cognitive diagnosis applications.

DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. DESCRIPTION:The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history.  During a 23-year career with the Clements\, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps\, head of research and publications\, associate director\, and acting director.  Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well\, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting\, conservation\, solving mysteries\, and more. \n\nDunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts\, striking visual imagery and cartography\, and some of his favorite materials from the collections\, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

DESCRIPTION:Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum\, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects\, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language\, meaning\, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.\n \nThe installation\, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art\, is characteristically austere\, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art\, in which the idea\, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities\, is the essence of the artwork.\n\nLead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Egon Schiele
DESCRIPTION:Egon Schiele (1890-1918)\, one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism\, made more than 3\,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka\, George Grosz\, and Gustav Klimt\, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.        \n\n

DESCRIPTION:A comprehensive simulation framework for modeling helicopter ship landing was developed. The framework includes high-fidelity models for: 1) vehicle flight dynamics\, 2) Wind Over Deck (WOD)\, 3) ground effect\, 4) ship deck motion\, and 5) a robust flight control system.\n\nApproach simulations were performed to assess the influence of WOD and ground effect on the UH-60A helicopter response. The WOD velocities were obtained from Detached Eddy Simulation of flow over a SFS2 ship. A gain scheduled LQR controller was used to track the approach trajectory. The WOD resulted in high frequency oscillations in the CG position coordinates and attitude angles. Oblique WOD conditions required greater control effort than the headwind case. Ground effect\, modeled using a simple scaling factor\, caused an 11.3% decrease in rotor power consumption.\n\nA finite-state ground effect model was subsequently implemented to study the influence of inclined and moving decks. Hover and landing simulations were performed with a deck inclined at constant roll and pitch angles\, and a deck undergoing isolated sinusoidal motion. Static deck roll produced an increase in the lateral inflow coefficient and the longitudinal cyclic input to the main rotor. Power requirements were significantly affected by heaving deck motion\, highlighting the importance of modeling dynamic ground effect.

Karen participated in the Longitudinal Study of Astronaut Health (LSAH).\n\nAt Lockheed Martin\, she worked on Missile Launching Systems\, Basic Research\, Commercial Aircraft\, Undersea Systems\, SMART Structures\, Robotics and high performance Military Aircraft. She developed embedded fiber optics technology. She is a Master Black Belt in 6-sigma and Lean Engineering.\n\nKaren serves on several university engineering and non-profit boards. Karen is the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus –Aerospace for the UM.\n\nKaren is now CEO of Karen Albrecht Enterprises a Career and Personal Development Organization.\n\nKaren has delivered over 200 seminars for courses she developed and gives her time and knowledge to help students navigate career fairs and resume. Karen has set up an endowment fund for Aerospace undergraduate education and provides scholarships for Aerospace Engineering students who need the support to finish their education at the University of Michigan. In this presentation\, we will test the veracity of these characterizations through an examination of the global research literature on bullying and mobbing in the academic workplace. Specifically\, we will explore the unique features of 1) academe (academic freedom\, shared governance) and the nature of the university as a “workplace” and 2) faculty as “ workers” as well as 3) the broader social\, political and economic context for how they shape the prevalence\, nature\, dynamics\, impact of\, and response to bullying and mobbing. Key insights include the status-based nature of bullying\, our colleagues\, the public\, and the state as powerful actors\, and the critical influence of culturally shaped behavioral norms in defining what is and is not bullying\, who should be involved in assessing and addressing bullying\, and some practical strategies for amelioration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: “Water” In and On the Surface of Terrestrial Planetary Bodies\, by Any Means
DESCRIPTION:Searching for life in the solar system has been a continuing quest for planetary scientists.  Water is the elixir of life\, as we know\, and as such\, the central theme of space missions chasing after water in the solar system (e.g.\, Mars\, Europa\, Titan). \n\nOur home planet is unique in the inner solar system for the presence of liquid surface water.  It is only ~30 years ago that the Earth’s mantle was discovered to contain one ocean-worth water stored as OH in nominally anhydrous minerals (e.g.\, olivine\, pyroxene).   Despite these small relative abundances\, water in the Earth’s mantle plays dramatic roles in many geological processes\, from forming surface water through volcanic degassing to causing chemical and physical changes in the mantle.   The search of water IN and ON the terrestrial bodies represents the logical extension of our knowledge of water on Earth.  \n\nRecently\, our Moon has become the focus of such searches for water.  The remote-sensed data has showed there is wide-spread “water” on the Moon (e.g.\, Pieters et al.\, 2009\; Colaprete et al.\, 2011).  However\, it does not provide unambiguous ground-truth of water IN lunar soils.  Toward this aspect\, my colleagues and I have examined several Apollo lunar soils.  Our results provide evidence for the first identification of OH in lunar soils that were derived from both solar-wind and non-solar-wind sources (Liu et al.\, 2012a)\, versus H in lunar volcanic glass.  Proving solar-wind-formed water on the Moon is important in searching for water on other airless bodies in the solar system.  The on-going missions to Mercury and 4 Vesta have actually observed minor amounts of water on these airless bodies\, but are they similar to that on the Moon? \n\nMars\, on the other hand\, is the only other planet with clear signs of past/present liquid water.  As such\, “follow the water” has been the central focus of NASA’s martian exploration program.  However\, questions remain on when\, where\, and how water comes and goes on Mars.  We recently recognized that impact melt pockets in martian meteorites record signatures of subsurface water\, and thus provide an unique if not only tool to examine subsurface water reservoirs on Mars (Chen et al.\, 2015\; Liu et al.\, 2018). \n\nHere\, I present results from my research on lunar and martian samples\, and discuss future directions toward searching for water on the inner solar system bodies.
