The materials collected in this exhibit, all held in the Special Collections Research Center, showcase not only the variety, beauty, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic, but more often both combine in writers\u2019 and artists\u2019 resistance to mass-market, industrial, bourgeois, and nationalist print cultures.\r\n\r\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism, decadence, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Refreshments will be served. \r\n\r\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer\u2019s Narrative Art, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism, postmodernism, Shakespeare and Rome, the heritage of Greece, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts, visual arts, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship, the Rackham Prize twice, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. We study the relationship between discretion and corruption in Italian government procurement auctions, using a confidential database of firms and procurement officials investigated for corruption by Italian enforcement authorities. We show that discretionary procedure auctions (those awarded on the basis of negotiated rather than open bidding) are associated with corruption only when conducted with fewer than the formally required number of bidders; we similarly find that discretionary criteria (``scoring rule'' rather than first price) auctions are won more often by firms investigated for corruption. We show that these ``corruptible'' discretionary auctions are chosen more often by officials who are themselves investigated for corruption, but less often in investigated procurement administrations (those in which enforcement authorities are investigating at least one procurement official). These findings fit with a model in which more discretion leads to greater efficiency as well as more opportunities for theft, and a central monitor manages this tradeoff by limiting discretion in high-corruption locales. Then, I will illustrate how these strategies are applied to understand the processes of protein synthesis, which involves multiple steps such as transcription, translation, folding and maturation, but typically whose intermediates proteins cannot be measured. Furthermore, drugs are also cleared out from our body in multiple steps of metabolism. To estimate the rate of drug clearance, which is a critical factor determining the dose level, a canonical approach has been used in more than 65,000 published papers for last 30 years. Comparatively little is known regarding the role of the regulatory factors bound to the 3' end of mRNA in nociceptor sensitization. Poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) stimulates translation initiation by bridging the Poly(A) tail to the eukaryotic initiation factor 4F complex associated with the mRNA cap. We have developed an RNA-based competitive inhibitor of PABP that attenuates behavioral responses to pain in mice. To identify the Poly(A) mRNAs subject to privileged translation in response to noxious cues, we have applied ribosome profiling to primary sensory neurons and tissues. A small number of transcripts are selectively translated in response to plasticity mediators. Among them is the capsid forming protein Arc. Arc has been implicated in synaptic plasticity and learning in the brain. We demonstrate that the ribosomal S6 kinase 1 is responsible for Arc production in nociceptors and describe a new role for local translation of Arc in afferent fibers. However, tracking of this \u201cresearch-to-practice\u201d translation has found that it can take 17 years for treatment innovations to reach frontline care settings. Moreover, only 1 in 5 of these treatments are ultimately sustained in real-world practice. This research-to-practice gap wastes millions of dollars that are invested in research on treatment discoveries that do not make it into the hands of patients who can ultimately benefit from them. Key barriers to implementing treatment innovations into routine practice include lack of planning to prepare frontline clinicians in their adoption, lack of opportunities to adapt innovations across diverse patient populations, and limited incentives for health care organizations to sustain innovations once the research study ends. This talk will describe novel research approaches to help close the gap between innovation and implementation, notably the new VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Implementation Roadmap and accompanying Implementation Strategy Training Hubs. We also describe novel designs such as sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) and adaptive designs, that can help determine which implementation strategies are most effective in overcoming provider and organizational barriers to treatment adoption, and how these designs and implementation strategies can be applied to settings outside the clinic walls such as schools. We also describe the challenges in conducting these studies to determine the best implementation strategies and the active ingredients for such studies to ultimately inform health systems in the successful spread of innovations to ultimately improve patient outcomes.\r\n \r\nDr. Amy M. Kilbourne, PhD, MPH is Director of the VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan (UM) Medical School. With over 40 centers across the U.S., the mission of QUERI is to improve Veteran health by accelerating the implementation of research findings into real-world practice. Dr. Kilbourne\u2019s goal is to improve Veteran health through implementation science, i.e., the use of strategies to help providers scale up and spread effective practices in real-world treatment settings. She has led several national improvement initiatives including a VA national population management program to provide outreach services for Veterans with serious mental illness (Re-Engage) and a community care implementation research roadmap. Dr. Kilbourne is the recipient of several awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the Gerald L. Klerman Research Award from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). Dr. Kilbourne received her bachelors of arts at the University of California at Berkeley (double major in molecular biology and rhetoric), and her masters in epidemiology and PhD in health policy from the University of California Los Angeles.\r\n\r\nThis is the first of our weekly seminars this semester. The Colonel\u2019s heirs will be disinherited if he dies unmarried, and so he finds a short-term bride in the strolling player, Elsie Maynard \u2013 much to the chagrin of her infatuated traveling partner, the jester Jack Point. Meanwhile, the Colonel\u2019s friends and admirers work for his release \u2013 or for his escape, if necessary. Will the Colonel, his impetuous marriage, and the broken-hearted jester all survive until the final curtain? This time there will be no last-minute topsy-turvy revelation to prevent the story\u2019s dramatic conclusion.\r\n\r\nYeomen of the Guard will be directed by David Andrews, who most recently directed UMGASS\u2019s 2018 production of The Grand Duke, and who will be directing with UMGASS for the eighth time, among his 22 semesters with the group.
