The Colonel’s heirs will be disinherited if he dies unmarried\, and so he finds a short-term bride in the strolling player\, Elsie Maynard – much to the chagrin of her infatuated traveling partner\, the jester Jack Point. Meanwhile\, the Colonel’s friends and admirers work for his release – or for his escape\, if necessary. Will the Colonel\, his impetuous marriage\, and the broken-hearted jester all survive until the final curtain? This time there will be no last-minute topsy-turvy revelation to prevent the story’s dramatic conclusion.\n\nYeomen of the Guard will be directed by David Andrews\, who most recently directed UMGASS’s 2018 production of The Grand Duke\, and who will be directing with UMGASS for the eighth time\, among his 22 semesters with the group. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. Khan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Near East and Asian Studies at Wayne State University. He teaches Islamic and Middle East history\, politics and culture\, and is a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Citizenship. He is also Adjunct Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Detroit-Mercy and at Rochester College\, co-teaching a course on Muslim-Christian Diversity.\n\nReligion in politics is the most crucial issue facing Middle East countries. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. Comparative analyses of these static structures reveals the remarkable conformational flexibility of these machines and hints at the significant structural rearrangements that evidently accompany their functional cycles. Unfortunately\, the experimental observation and characterization of these conformational dynamics is severely impeded by the size and complexity of biomolecular machines\, severely limiting our understanding of the contributions that dynamics make to their functions. Using a combination of single-molecule biophysical-\, structural-\, and biochemical approaches\, my research group aims to overcome these challenges and elucidate the precise roles that the conformational dynamics of biomolecular machines play in driving and controlling their functions. My seminar presentation will primarily focus on our studies of the mechanism and regulation of messenger RNA translation into protein by the ribosome\, an essential step in gene expression. Specifically\, I will discuss how thermally driven fluctuations of the ribosome and other essential translation components contribute to the mechanism and regulation of translation. Because the ribosome is the target of over half of all currently prescribed antibiotics and because of the growing list of human diseases to which deregulation of translation has been causally linked\, our findings hold great promise for informing the development of next-generation antibiotics and small-molecule therapeutic agents that function by modulating the conformational dynamics of the translation machinery. Adamczyk of the University of Wisconsin-Madison\n\nAbstract\nArtificial limbs offer an opportunity to improve movement through biomimetic devices. One approach is to directly replace joint function\, but achieving humanlike performance is challenging for design\, control\, cost and longevity of the systems. An alternative approach is to exploit biomechanical workarounds for lost function rather than directly replacing it. This presentation will describe several such “semi-active” prostheses – low-power systems that modulate their mechanical properties but cannot power body movement – that aim to add adaptability and versatility with minimal addition of weight\, height\, complexity\, power demand and cost. \nAnother challenge in rehabilitation and assistive technology is determining which among several interventions is most beneficial to everyday movement. “Real-world” assessment using wearable sensors is a popular approach\, but current analysis techniques struggle to reduce days-long data sets to generalizable knowledge. The second part of this presentation will describe this challenge and a novel approach to data reduction aimed at enabling lab-like scientific findings from long-term wearable data sets\, with upcoming application to prosthetic ankle-foot systems.\n\nBio\nDr. Peter Adamczyk earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University (B.S.) and the University of Michigan (M.S. and Ph.D) in the areas of Robotics and Biomechanics. He spent several years running a startup company dedicated to advancing the science and technology of lower-limb prosthetics and real-world motion assessment. All roles are available for SATB principals and chorus\; cast will be selected from the audition pool with no pre-casting. All are welcome to audition\, including students\, faculty / staff\, and general community members of Ann Arbor / Southeast Michigan area. To sign up for an audition time you may either attend the UMGASS Mass Meeting at 7:00 pm on Sunday\, September 8th at the Michigan League\, or e-mail umgassexec@umich.edu to have a member of the board sign you up by proxy. Walk-ins are also welcome\; please arrive before 9:00 pm if you plan to walk-in. Callbacks (if necessary) will be held on the evening of Thursday\, September 12th.\n\nPlease prepare ~32-64 bars of a selection from musical theater\, comic opera\, or opera (in English)\, and provide a legible copy for the accompanist. Be prepared to read selections from the libretto if you are interested in a speaking role. There will be no dance audition for this production. Rehearsals will average two days per week between Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening for both chorus and principals. Production dates are December 5 – 8\, 2019\, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League\, with full staging and full orchestra.\n\nThe University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) was founded in 1947 and is the oldest student-run society nationwide dedicated to performing the operettas of Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Each year we bring together students and community members for two fully staged productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas\, which are performed with orchestra at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in downtown Ann Arbor. The quality of our productions sets a high standard for community G&S companies\, and our performances\, particularly of the lesser-known works of the canon\, are benchmarks for similar organizations around the country and the world. \n​\nWe’re proud to be a great place for future performing arts professionals as well as a creative outlet for students\, professors\, and community members of all ages looking to blow off steam and have a good time participating in a great show!\n\nThe Yeomen of the Guard was the 11th collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The story takes place at the Tower of London\, where the heroic Colonel Fairfax is scheduled to be executed the following morning on questionable grounds. The Colonel’s heirs will be disinherited if he dies unmarried\, and so he finds a short-term bride in the strolling player\, Elsie Maynard – much to the chagrin of her infatuated traveling partner\, the jester Jack Point. Meanwhile\, the Colonel’s friends and admirers work for his release – or for his escape\, if necessary. Will the Colonel\, his impetuous marriage\, and the broken-hearted jester all survive until the final curtain? This time there will be no last-minute topsy-turvy revelation to prevent the story’s dramatic conclusion.\n\nYeomen of the Guard will be directed by David Andrews\, who most recently directed UMGASS’s 2018 production of The Grand Duke\, and who will be directing with UMGASS for the eighth time\, among his 22 semesters with the group. Music Director for this production will be Ezra Donner\, a U-M alumnus with a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University\, who conducted previous UMGASS productions of The Mikado\, Patience\, HMS Pinafore\, and The Pirates of Penzance between 2015 and 2017.
