SUMMARY:Auditions:Gilbert and Sullivan's Yeomen of the Guard Auditions
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) is holding auditions for The Yeomen of the Guard\, or the Merryman and His Maid on Monday\, September 9th\, Tuesday\, September 10th\, and Wednesday\, September 11th at the Student Theater Arts Complex (STAC)\, 1201 Kipke Drive in Ann Arbor (directly east of the U-M football stadium) from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. All roles are available for SATB principals and chorus\; cast will be selected from the audition pool with no pre-casting. All are welcome to audition\, including students\, faculty / staff\, and general community members of the Ann Arbor / Southeast Michigan area. To sign up for an audition time you may either attend the UMGASS Mass Meeting at 7:00 pm on Sunday\, September 8th at the Michigan League\, or e-mail umgassexec@umich.edu to have a member of the board sign you up by proxy. Walk-ins are also welcome\; please arrive before 9:00 pm if you plan to walk-in. Callbacks (if necessary) will be held on the evening of Thursday\, September 12th.\n \nPlease prepare ~32-64 bars of a selection from musical theater\, comic opera\, or opera (in English)\, and provide a legible copy for the accompanist. Be prepared to read selections from the libretto if you are interested in a speaking role. There will be no dance audition for this production. Rehearsals will average two days per week between Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening for both chorus and principals. Production dates are December 5 – 8\, 2019\, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League\, with full staging and full orchestra.\n\nThe University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) was founded in 1947 and is the oldest student-run society nationwide dedicated to performing the operettas of Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Each year we bring together students and community members for two fully staged productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas\, which are performed with orchestra at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in downtown Ann Arbor. The quality of our productions sets a high standard for community G&S companies\, and our performances\, particularly of the lesser-known works of the canon\, are benchmarks for similar organizations around the country and the world. \n\nWe’re proud to be a great place for future performing arts professionals as well as a creative outlet for students\, professors\, and community members of all ages looking to blow off steam and have a good time participating in a great show!\n\n\nThe Yeomen of the Guard was the 11th collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The story takes place at the Tower of London\, where the heroic Colonel Fairfax is scheduled to be executed the following morning on questionable grounds. The Colonel’s heirs will be disinherited if he dies unmarried\, and so he finds a short-term bride in the strolling player\, Elsie Maynard – much to the chagrin of her infatuated traveling partner\, the jester Jack Point. Meanwhile\, the Colonel’s friends and admirers work for his release – or for his escape\, if necessary. Will the Colonel\, his impetuous marriage\, and the broken-hearted jester all survive until the final curtain? This time there will be no last-minute topsy-turvy revelation to prevent the story’s dramatic conclusion.\n\nYeomen of the Guard will be directed by David Andrews\, who most recently directed UMGASS’s 2018 production of The Grand Duke\, and who will be directing with UMGASS for the eighth time\, among his 22 semesters with the group. Music Director for this production will be Ezra Donner\, a U-M alumnus with a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University\, who conducted previous UMGASS productions of The Mikado\, Patience\, HMS Pinafore\, and The Pirates of Penzance between 2015 and 2017. The Choreographer will be UMGASS veteran Beth Ballbach\, who choreographed recent UMGASS productions of Princess Ida\, Iolanthe\, The Grand Duke\, and The Gondoliers\, among many others.\n\nFor additional information on Yeomen\, including audio files of the music\, check out the Gilbert & Sullivan Archive at https://gsarchive.net/yeomen/html/index.html. For additional information about UMGASS\, check out the UMGASS web site at https://www.umgass.org/.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Multi-Omics Systems Biology Approach to Vascular Biology”
DESCRIPTION:Shankar Subramaniam\nUniversity of California San Diego\n \n“Multi-Omics Systems Biology Approach to\n Vascular Biology”\n\nAbstract: \n\nOver the past decade\, we have investigated the mechanisms associated with shear stress response in endothelial cells using systems biology approaches [e.g. 1-8]. In the most recent granting period\, we have carried out longitudinal analysis of distinctive shear stress response to pulsatile and oscillatory stress corresponding to normal and disturbed flow in blood vessels. Our studies have provided fundamental insights into temporally regulated mechanisms as well as a systems-level view of stress response. Our key findings also included implications of long noncoding RNA molecules – LEENE and LINC341 - which appear to have dramatic consequences on endothelial homeostasis. The regulation by LINC RNAs entails the coupling between KLF4 and genes involved in endothelial function. In addition\, we explored the interplay between endothelial cells and macrophages in atherogenesis. These studies reveal a novel mechanisms in which the transcription factor KLF4 regulates the enzyme cholesterol-25-hydroxylase and the nuclear hormone receptor Liver X Receptor. Our key findings indicate that KLF4 transactivates cholesterol-25-hydroxylase and liver X receptor\, thereby promoting the synergistic effects between ECs and macrophages to protect against atherosclerosis susceptibility. \n\nAcknowledgements: Supported by NHLBI Grants R01HL106579 and HL108735\; Collaborative projects with Drs. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Early History of South Africa\, c. 900-1930
DESCRIPTION:During the millennium preceding European colonialism\, South Africans forged societies characterized by dispersed political networks\, long-distance commerce\, extensive regional interactions\, and overlapping flows of people\, ideas\, and materials. By the 18th century\, their political economies and political beliefs yielded powerful kingdoms. Colonial political mythology rests on the notion that early Europeans ‘set up a country bare’ and devoid of civilization. The early history of South Africa reveals a far more complex past.\n\nDr. Jimenez is an LSA Collegiate Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2017. Her research uses comparative historical linguistics to recover the undocumented past. She is interested in the ways southern African speech communities crafted political beliefs and practices over several centuries\, how these beliefs shaped gendered and generational social relations\, and the ways enduring ideas shaped the rise of centralized kingdoms.\n\nThis is the first in a six-lecture series. The subject is South Africa: Past\, Present\, and a Look Forward. The next lecture will be September 19\, 2019. The title is: Is Democracy Alive and Well in South Africa? Evaluating the results of the 2019 National Elections.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. She also maintains a personal website\, cynthiasowers.rc.lsa.umich.edu\, where she publishes essays\, poetry\, and visual artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Strengths of Refugees and Their Community
DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ceal Floyer: Things
DESCRIPTION:Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum\, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects\, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language\, meaning\, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.\n \nThe installation\, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art\, is characteristically austere\, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art\, in which the idea\, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities\, is the essence of the artwork.\n\nLead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design\, Institute for the Humanities\, CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, and School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center\, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Egon Schiele
DESCRIPTION:Egon Schiele (1890-1918)\, one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism\, made more than 3\,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka\, George Grosz\, and Gustav Klimt\, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.        \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | An Exploration of Japanese Game Audio
DESCRIPTION:Quite possibly the primary means that most Americans have encountered Japanese culture\, if not by food\, is through video game music. Japanese composed themes and game audio techniques from the 70s and 80s are still used in modern games and even played in concert halls. This music has become one of Japan’s most notable exports to the world. In this presentation\, Dr. Thompson will lead a journey through some of the most famous and influential video game music that he enjoyed during his childhood in the early days of game audio\, and then turn to more recent topics\, including recent research on the influence of video game music on piano study in Japan.\n \nMatthew Thompson\, DMA — collaborative piano\, is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. As a pianist\, Thompson has performed with operatic celebrities like Thomas Hampson\, Golden Mask winner Vince Yi\, and musical theatre gurus like Tony Award winner\, Gavin Creel. Equally comfortable collaborating with instrumentalists\, Thompson’s most recent recording project\, Japonica\, is comprised of Japanese composed oboe/piano duos with recent U-M alumnus\, Dr. Alex Hayashi. Thompson’s research interests in game audio pedagogy have garnered international attention\; he presents regularly nationally and serves on the advisory board for GameSoundCon and a committee member for the North American Conference on Video Game Music.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Asymmetric interaction on dynamics in network connectivity among agents
DESCRIPTION:There is an increasing body of literature on understanding the process of evacuation\, and it focuses both on people's behavior and emergency management. We need to consider aspects of interaction among people under nonotice disaster for planning with evacuation demand. This seminar examines the effect of social interaction on discrete choice during the network formation process. The primary objective is to evaluate influence on risk regarding from others in greater detail while considering how influencers and network structures affect one-to-one interactions. This talk examines an analytical framework for simultaneous evaluation of social interaction and social network formation. The framework is well suited to dynamic disaster situations because local interaction heavily influences human decision-making\, and because network formation changes over time.\n\nJunji Urata is an assistant professor in Department of Civil Engineering at University of Tokyo. His research interests include behavioral modeling\, analytics of traffic demand\, social interaction\, dynamic programming\, and high performance computing.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Prediction under chaos using a depth-averaged model of turbidity currents
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I will demonstrate a forward stratigraphic model based on depth-averaged governing equations for the flow of submarine turbidity currents over an erodible bed. This model is being used with some success by the Process Stratigraphy team at ExxonMobil to generate stratigraphic models for deepwater environments of deposition. The mathematical model consists of a system of nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs\, with an additional so-called Exner equation for modeling the flow-bed sediment exchange and their bedload transport. The Exner equation plays a key role since a (slow time scale) change in the gradient of the bed influences the (fast time scale) momentum of the flow. The transport equations\, along with closure models for sediment transport\, TKE balance\, and water entrainment\, are solved using a first-order finite-volume method with a HLLC approximate Riemann solver and integrated using an explicit Euler scheme. The model shows the emergence of self-organized patterns in the deposits\, including the creation of bedforms\, channel formation\, and avulsions\, consistent with observations of modern systems and lab experiments. These occur even with uniform boundary conditions and symmetric initial conditions. The initial disturbances that trigger these mechanisms are ostensibly sourced by floating-point roundoff errors. An ensemble of simulations with slightly different initial conditions are used to analyze statistics on shapes of geomorphic elements and grain size distributions. The objective is to assess whether and under what conditions such a numerical model can be predictive and quantify the uncertainty in the results arising due to the irreducible chaos in the dynamical system.\nBio: Ramanathan Vishnampet is a Computational Data Scientist at the Global Business Lines Analytics & Optimization group at ExxonMobil Upstream Integrated Solutions. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, where his dissertation focused on an exact and consistent adjoint method for high-fidelity discretization of the compressible flow equations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Departmental Seminar (899): Robert Gramacy\, Virginia Tech
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThe seminar will be followed by a reception in the IOE Commons (Room 1709) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.\n\nTitle: \nReplication or exploration? Sequential design for stochastic simulation experiments\n\nAbstract: \nWe investigate the merits of replication\, and provide methods that search for optimal designs (including replicates)\, in the context of noisy computer simulation experiments. We first show that replication offers the potential to be beneficial from both design and computational perspectives\, in the context of Gaussian process surrogate modeling. We then develop a lookahead based sequential design scheme that can determine if a new run should be at an existing input location (i.e.\, replicate) or at a new one (explore). When paired with a newly developed heteroskedastic Gaussian process model\, our dynamic design scheme facilitates learning of signal and noise relationships which can vary throughout the input space. We show that it does so efficiently\, on both computational and statistical grounds. In addition to illustrative synthetic examples\, we demonstrate performance on two challenging real-data simulation experiments\, from inventory management and epidemiology.\n\nBio:\nRobert Gamacy is a Professor of Statistics in the College of Science at Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech). Previously\, he was an Associate Professor of Econometrics and Statistics at the Booth School of Business\, and a fellow of the Computation Institute at The University of Chicago. His research interests include Bayesian modeling methodology\, statistical computing\, Monte Carlo inference\, nonparametric regression\, sequential design\, and optimization under uncertainty.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Seminar Series: Dr. Andrew Dimmock
DESCRIPTION:CLASP is very pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Dimmock of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF - INSTITUTET FÖR RYMDFYSIK). \n\nDr. Dimmock will give a presentation titled: \n\"Geomagnetically Induced Currents in Fennoscandia.\"\n\nAbstract: Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) are a space weather hazard affecting numerous large ground-based technological networks such as pipelines\, telecommunication wires\, and power-lines. They are caused by the geoelectric field which is set up from rapid variations in the geomagnetic field (dB/dt) and the conductive nature of the ground. GICs pose a challenge to forecasters due to their regional variability resulting from the complex and dynamic spatiotemporal behaviour of the ionospheric currents\, and/or the regional variability of the ground conductivity. In many cases\, both of these effects are important\, making the spatial structure of the geoelectric field very complex.\n\nIn this seminar\, the challenges associated with understanding and predicting the regional variability of GICs are discussed. A case study of the September 2017 storms is reviewed\, in which unusually large GICs in the Finnish natural gas pipeline were recorded. Following this\, statistical results are shown which quantify the spatial variation of dB/dt on spatial scales of approximately 500km. We also examine the potential contribution from localised conductivity features on GICs. The seminar is concluded with a discussion of ongoing research followed by open questions/discussions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Background Music vs. Neorealist Music: The Case of THE BICYCLE THIEF
DESCRIPTION:Italian filmic neorealism was more an ethic than an esthetic\; it was not an organized movement but a constellation of directors and films who made a virtue of necessity. Nonetheless\, in hindsight it has come to be defined by its stylistic innovations (for example\, the use of location rather than studio\, and of non-professional actors). As a result\, the critical bibliography on the topic deals extensively with individual films\, the auteurs\, and with matters of form and content (the introduction of the perspective of the subaltern classes)\, the contribution of the musical score to the emotional and intellectual impact of the films has been given much less attention.\nThe purpose of this paper is that of beginning to address that lacuna.\n\nJoseph Francese is University Distinguished Faculty at Michigan State University\, Series Editor of “Studi di italianistica moderna e contemporanea nel mondo anglofono/Studies in Modern and Contemporary Italianistica in the Anglophone World” (a monograph series published by Firenze University Press) and Senior Editor emeritus of ITALIAN CULTURE (2003-2018). He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on topics in Renaissance and contemporary literature and film (including an essay on the influence of Cesare Zavattini on Latin American cinema)\, and has written monographs on Sciascia\, Pasolini\, postmodern narrative\, Italian cultural politics in the 1950s\, and the fictions of Eco\, Consolo\, and Tabucchi.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Characterization and Combination
DESCRIPTION:Professor Henderson's talk will explore the power of combinatorics—a popular subfield of Victorian mathematics—to illuminate the structure of late Victorian characterization\, focusing particularly on Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend. It will show that there is a good historical reason why\, in the words of a contemporary reviewer\, the characters of this novel could be described as “a number of automatons moving about\,” “tattooed with various characteristics”: nodes in a social network\, they are the literary\nembodiment of a conception of personhood as mobile\, extrinsically defined\, and combinatory. Characters in these novels are not the fundamental units of social meaning that earlier nineteenth-century novelistic protocols would lead us to expect but are instead like atoms in a compound or letters in a word\; they form variable combinations with others\, and it’s the combinations that matter. Henderson will show that this focus on clusters of people rather than singular individuals has its historical grounding in the logic of late Victorian capitalism\, an abstract logic of ramifying networks in which meaning and value inhere less in particular people or things than in their links to other people and things. As we will see\, that logic is epitomized in combinatorics\, the study of network ramification. Henderson argues that combinatorics is in fact the mathematical subfield of late Victorian capitalism: it both reflects and reinforces a logic of abstraction\, combination\, and expansion. It is fitting then that Dickens implements this logic in the “character system” of Our Mutual Friend\, his great novel on finance capitalism. This novel\, as the title suggests\, is devoted to understanding persons in terms of networks\, which it represents as the ethically suspect framework of finance capitalism.\n\nProfessor Henderson's research centers in nineteenth-century British culture. She is particularly interested in exploring formal similarities between literary arts\, visual arts\, and sciences. Her most recent book\, Algebraic Art: Mathematical Formalism and Victorian Culture (Oxford: Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, traces the influence of mathematical formalism on Victorian literature and visual art. Other recent articles include “The Physics and Poetry of Analogy” (Victorian Studies 56:3\, Spring 2014) and “Symbolic Logic and the Logic of Symbolism” (Critical Inquiry 41:1\, Autumn 2014). \n\nProfessor Henderson received her PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. She was an Associate Professor of English at the University of Michigan from 1997-2003. Her academic distinctions include the following: Guggenheim Fellow (2012-13)\, ACLS Fellow (2012-13)\, Michigan Humanities Award (1999)\, Bredvold Prize (1996)\, and Michigan Society of Fellows (1991-1994).\n\nCo-sponsorship for this event is generously provided by the Michigan Society of Fellows\, the Department of Comparative Literature\, and the Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Topological and Fractional Electronic States in Graphene Heterostructures
DESCRIPTION:Graphene is a highly tunable platform for studying the effects of electron-electron interactions in two dimensions. Encapsulation with a 2D dielectric (hexagonal boron nitride\, hBN)\, and more recently the use of single-crystal graphite top and bottom gates have decreased the electronic disorder to a level suitable for the to study fragile and exotic strongly correlated states. Additionally\, control of twist angle between closely-matched crystal lattices allows for unique control of electronic properties\, leading to the “Hofstadter butterfly” and more recently unconventional superconductivity. I will describe newly discovered exotic fractional quantum Hall states and a class of related states called fractional Chern insulators\, both in high quality graphene heterostructures. These measurements show that graphene is an intriguing platform for realizing new topological and fractional phases\, and opens new routes towards realizing interesting quantum phase transitions and manipulating non-abelian quasiparticles for quantum computation.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Communication & Media Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Current Controversies in Sports\, Media\, and Society sheds light on how various issues\, including racism\, sexism\, ageism\, religion\, politics\, and more\, are depicted in sports media. The lecture will present research showcasing how sports media representations of athletes can influence both American culture and the individuals who consume said media. \n\nCynthia Frisby is a nationally-recognized authority on media portrayals of minorities\, athletes\, women and teens. Frisby studies how media messages contribute toward creating or maintaining stereotypes and biases against minorities\, athletes\, women and teens. Among other topics\, she has investigated the coverage of black male athletes by magazines and news websites from 2002-2012 and demonstrated that news stories involving instances of crime or violence were more heavily covered when they involved black athletes.\n\nFrisby's enthusiasm for her research is reflected clearly in the classroom\, where she has won numerous awards for excellence in teaching. In 2002 the University of Missouri awarded her one of its highest teaching honors\, the William T. Kemper Fellowship. Student-athletes recognized her outstanding teaching by naming her one of the four Most Inspiring Professors on the MU campus in 2007. Several Mizzou '39 honorees have named Frisby as their mentor. Mizzou '39 honors outstanding seniors for their academic achievements\, leadership and service.\n\nFrisby earned her doctorate degree and her master's degree from the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Mass Communications. She joined the Missouri School of Journalism faculty in January 1998 and is a full professor of strategic communication with a joint appointment in the communication department in the College of Arts and Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Robots\, telemetry\, and the sex lives of wild birds: Using technology to study courtship and conservation
DESCRIPTION:Males in many species must convince females to mate by producing elaborate courtship displays tuned to female preferences\, like the song of a cricket or the train of a peacock. But courtship in many species is more like a negotiation than an advertisement\, thus in addition to elaborate signals\, success in courtship may require tactical skills. These skills may include the ability to choose a flattering display site\, respond appropriately to female courtship signals\, and adjust display investment in response to the marketplace of other males and females. My lab has been investigating courtship negotiations in greater sage-grouse\, which mate in an open marketplace of competing males and choosing females (the lek). I will discuss experiments using robotic females to investigate courtship interactions between the sexes. I will also discuss ongoing research investigating how off-lek foraging behaviors affect on-lek displays\, and how this basic science has informed my lab's research into human impacts on lekking activities.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/6uyRvNb_vGg

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cyborg Arts / Neil Harbisson & Moon Ribas: Transpecies
DESCRIPTION:Catalan-based artists\, self-identified cyborgs\, and influencers in the global cyborg art movement\, Neil Harbisson and Moon Ribas use the internet as a sense to fuel perception\, understanding\, and self expression. Both artists explore the boundaries between cybernetics and organism\, defend the freedom of self-design\, and believe that embracing our nonhuman entities can bring us closer with the organic worlds of animals\, nature\, and the cosmos. Together\, Ribas and Harbisson advocate on behalf of cyborgs worldwide through the Cyborg Foundation. Founded in 2010\, the foundation is committed to the self-actualization of cyborg identities\, trans-species rights\, and the promotion of cyborg art. An avant-garde artist\, Ribas is best known for developing Seismic Sense\, an online seismic sensor implanted in her feet that allows her to perceive earthquakes taking place around the planet — and on the moon — through vibrations in real time. With an antenna implanted in his skull\, Harbisson’s creative expression extends to his physical body as well\, with the focus of his work dedicated to an exploration of identity\, perception\, the connection between sight and sound\, and the use of artistic expression via new sensory inputs. Harbisson and Ribas ask us to consider: “What separates human beings from the technology we create and use?”\n\nPresented with support from the Dissonance Event Series and the School of Information.\n\n Photos by Mark Kaplan (left) and Lars Norgaard (right)

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Queer(y)ing the “Alt-Right” on YouTube
DESCRIPTION:This is the final event for the Cultural Formations of the \"Alt-Right\" conference: https://events.umich.edu/event/63430\n\nSocial media have been key to the recent rise of the “alt-right\,” and YouTube has spawned entire networks of “alternative influencers” who peddle misogyny\, white supremacy\, ethno-nationalism\, fascism\, and populist messages of hate. How do we counter the spread of this movement\, both online and in real life? \nOne YouTuber has devised a particularly compelling format in which to respond to the “alt-right” where it thrives. On her ContraPoints channel\, Natalie Wynn has been creating carefully crafted\, intricately staged\, persona-multiplying video essays in which she takes on everything from “Incels” to “Redpiling\,” embraces the social justice warrior moniker and instructs her viewers on “How to recognize a Fascist.”\n\nJoin us for a screening of ContraPoints’ “Jordan Peterson” (2018)\, followed by a videoconference Q&A with Natalie Wynn herself.
