The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. When considering asymptotic particles of scattering processes\, such dressed particle states reduce to the infrared-finite states of Faddeev and Kulish. In quantum field theories in flat spacetime\, the dressings of asymptotic states are known to carry a definite leading soft charge of the asymptotic symmetry\, which can be interpreted as soft hair at infinity. Some recent attempts to extend this to subleading order will be briefly mentioned. We explore how this analysis can be extended to curved spacetimes with boundary\, in particular\, the Rindler and Schwarzschild spacetimes. More specifically\, we will show that infalling dressed matter on the future Rindler and Schwarzschild horizons implant soft horizon hair. Although many White people have anti-racist attitudes and endorse the belief that White people are culpable for racism\, their identities can still be threatened when they encounter information about racism. Although decades of research indicate that people strongly prefer information that affirms their prior attitudes\, it is less clear what happens when the information also threatens their identity. This talk will explore the impact of identity threats in motivated information selection among White Americans. I will present new data suggesting that identity threats\, and not just attitudes\, motivate Whites to avoid information about racism. I posit that testing the attitudinal and identity-based motivations in tandem helps to advance theory on attitudes and intergroup processes and shed light on contemporary racial-political divides. These devices have been designed to operate at a variety of scales in to produce short (<100 ns) pulses of ions\, X-rays\, or neutrons. LLNL has recently constructed and brought into operation a new device\, the MJOLNIR (MegaJouLe Neutron Imaging Radiography) DPF which is designed for radiography and high yield operations. This device has been commissioned over the last year and has achieved neutron yields up to 9x10^11 neutrons/pulse at 2.2 MA pinch current while operating at up to 1 MJ of stored energy. MJOLNIR is equipped with a wide range of diagnostics\, including activation foils\, neutron time of flight detectors\, a fast framing camera\, optical light gates\, and a time-gated neutron and x-ray imager. LLNL also runs unique particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of DPF in the Chicago code\, and has been able to gain significant insight into the physical factors that influence neutron yield. To that end\, MJOLNIR is one of the first DPFs whose design and continual upgrades are heavily influenced by predictive modeling. In this presentation\, we will describe insights from modeling\, device operation\, and recent results. Preliminary x-ray and neutron images will also be presented.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Andrea Schmidt is group leader of the Plasma Engineering Group and Associate Program Lead for Pulsed Power Fusion Plasmas at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). She received her Ph.D. in Physics from MIT and her BS in Physics from the U. of California/Berkeley. She joined LLNL as a postdoctoral researcher in 2011 and joined the staff in 2013. This rapid progression in our ability to measure the CMB has translated into a series of scientific advances including showing our universe to be spatially flat\, constraining inflationary and alternative theories of the primordial universe\, and providing a cornerstone for our precision knowledge of the Lambda-CDM model. Observations with the current generation of experiments\, including Advanced ACTPol\, will soon produce improved cosmological constraints. Building on this work\, in the coming decade Simons Observatory and ultimately CMB-S4 will: pass critical thresholds in constraints on inflation and light relativistic species\; provide improved measurements of dark energy\, dark matter\, neutrino masses\, and a variety of astrophysical phenomena\; and enable searches for new surprises. \n\nIn this talk I present the design and status of measurements with Advanced ACTPol and how we are building on this work to realize the next generations of experiments including Simons Observatory and CMB-S4. Consequently\, the city accounts for a robust enrollment in Armenian day schools and language classes at the college level. The Armenian community is uniquely heterogeneous\, differing in terms of country of origin\, time of immigration\, socioeconomic status\, and linguistic standard or dialect. A significant demographic shift has been the recent increase in the number of speakers of Eastern Armenian\, resulting in higher enrollments of Eastern Armenian students in day schools. In this context\, the Eastern Armenian student faces a unique situation\, as Western Armenian functions as the primary language of instruction for the Armenian curriculum in Los Angeles Armenian schools. \n \nThis presentation examines the experience of a growing number of heritage language speakers\, for whom the home variant of the heritage language differs from the standard taught at school. The goal is to highlight the dynamic nature of a pluricentric language in a diasporic context. Unique instructional problems emerge for heritage speakers who have partially or fully acquired one variant of a language but find themselves in a classroom where another standard is taught. To address the difficulties\, the process of second dialect acquisition (SDA)\, which involves the learning of a new variety of the same language\, has to be fully understood. After surveying the growing body of work on SDA\, this presentation will apply the findings to Armenian in a diasporic context and make concrete recommendations. Most importantly\, Dr. Karapetian will argue that the natural sociolinguistic variation in the pluricentric manifestation of Armenian should not be seen as a problem but as a resource.\n\nDr. Karapetian’s talk is part of an effort by the Society for Armenian Studies to open a discussion on Western Armenian as highlighted by its latest publication - \"Western Armenian in the 21 st Century: Challenges and New Approaches\" (Fresno\, CA: The Press at Fresno State\, 2018) edited by Bedross Der Matossian and Barlow Der Mugrdechian. \n \nDr. Shushan Karapetian is Deputy Director of the Institute of Armenian Studies at the University of Southern California. She received a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from UCLA in 2014\, where she has taught Armenian Studies courses over the past nine years. Her dissertation\, “‘How Do I Teach My Kids My Broken Armenian?’: A Study of Eastern Armenian Heritage Language Speakers in Los Angeles” received the Society for Armenian Studies Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2015. Her research interests focus on heritage languages and speakers and particularly on the case of Armenian heritage speakers in the Los Angeles community\, on which she has presented and lectured widely.
