SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Yo Tengo Nombre
DESCRIPTION:This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.\n\n\"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization\, vulnerability\, fear\, loss\, and criminalization\, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood.\" -Ruth Leonela Buentello\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Is Democracy Alive and Well in South Africa? Evaluating the results of the 2019 National Elections
DESCRIPTION:This presentation evaluates the state of democracy in South Africa over the last 25 years. How respected and stable are democratic institutions following the historic elections of 1994? Has the African National Congress\, the ruling party\, successfully addressed the harmful legacy of apartheid? Has the government realized the ideals of the country’s first\, democratically elected president\, Nelson Mandela\, to eradicate poverty and promote dignity? We focus on the 2019 National Elections to answer these questions.\n\nAnne Pitcher is a Professor in the Departments of Political Science and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. Her current research examines party politics\, urban political economy\, and state-business relations in Africa. She has conducted fieldwork\, survey and archival research in Angola\, Mozambique\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. She has published several books and dozens of articles in scholarly journals. She formerly served as President of the African Studies Association.\n\nThis is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is South Africa: Past\, Present\, and a Look Forward. The next lecture will be September 26\, 2019. The title is: De Facto and De Jure Apartheid: On the Moral\, Politcal and Policy Failures of the Post-Apartheid State: A Call for an Official State Apology for Apartheid in South Africa

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Strengths of Refugees and Their Community
DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ceal Floyer: Things
DESCRIPTION:Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum\, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects\, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language\, meaning\, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.\n \nThe installation\, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art\, is characteristically austere\, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art\, in which the idea\, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities\, is the essence of the artwork.\n\nLead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design\, Institute for the Humanities\, CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, and School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Caves of Chachapoyas\, Peru:Modern Human Activities and Potential Prehistoric Analogies -Lauren Pratt Doc Candidate Anthropology. Shells and Shell-Rings: The Woodland Period use of Mollusks at Mound Field - Julian E. Schultz Doc Student Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:PhD candidate Lauren Pratt will share the results of her research this research in Peru this summer. Although persistent use of sites over time is a common theme in archaeology\, rapid changes in subsistence\, economy\, and technology throughout most of the world over the past few centuries means that anthropologists rarely have the opportunity to see such persistence in action. In the Chachapoyas cultural area of northern Peru\, however\, caves and rockshelters remain in regular use by local agriculturalists. Previous work in the region (Church 1996) suggests that in some cases modern use of these caves provides useful analogs to prehistoric behavior. Here\, I discuss a variety of caves and rockshelters surveyed in July 2019\, highlighting modern human activities and possible analogies to the past.\n\nFirst year graduate student Julian Schultz will share some of the results from Florida State University's excavations (in 2016) at a Swift Creek/Weeden Island ring-midden\, where he completed his undergrad. Julian analyzed the mollusk remains from three shell units\, and in doing so found there to be a steep decline in the prevalence of a key resource\, the eastern oyster\, as the site's occupation waned. His talk will be primarily focused around this decline\, the factors that may have caused it\, and how this statistical drop-off potentially relates to the site's eventual abandonment. In addition\, he will explore how this statistical feature places Mound Field into the prehistoric landscape\, both in the Southeast and (to a degree) in a more global sense.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Connectivity and Automation: Opportunities and Challenges for Transportation Engineering
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade\, the rapid development of communication technology\, coupled with artificial intelligence with big data\, had significantly impacted and will continue to transform people’s daily travel. This creates significant opportunities for innovation in the field of transportation engineering. Such opportunities are manifested by the availability of massive mobility service data that is not seen before and the rapid development of autonomous vehicle technologies. In this talk\, Dr. Liu will discuss the future trends for transportation engineering\, drawing his experience as a seasoned transportation researcher and in the last two years as a business executive in a mobility service company. He will also discuss his research work on connected vehicle based traffic signal control and the process of transferring the research results into a commercial product\, which is currently being offered as software as a service on the market. It is his hope that this talk can shed some light on opportunities and challenges for future transportation research and education.\n\nDr. Henry Liu is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He is also a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and the Director for the Center for\nConnected and Automated Transportation (USDOT Region 5 University Transportation Center).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Departmental Seminar (899): Lewis Ntaimo\, Texas A&M University — *Stochastic Decomposition for Risk-Averse Multistage Stochastic Programming*
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThe seminar will be followed by a reception in the IOE Commons (Room 1709) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.\n\nTitle:\nStochastic Decomposition for Risk-Averse Multistage Stochastic Programming\n\nAbstract:\nMean-risk multistage stochastic programming (MR-MSP) provides a framework for modeling sequential decision-making problems under uncertainty and risk. However\, MR-MSP problems are difficult to solve due to their large-scale nature and the incorporation of risk measures in the objective. This work derives multistage stochastic decomposition (MSD) for solving large-scale MR-MSP instances with deviation and quantile risk measures. We show that risk-averse MSD converges asymptotically to an optimal solution and report on a computational study on the application of MSD to long-term hydrothermal scheduling. The study provides several insights into how optimal solutions vary across different risk levels as well as across different risk measures. In particular\, the results reveal that conditional value at-risk exhibits desirable control over extreme scenarios than other risk measures.\n\nKeywords: \nMultistage stochastic programming\, stochastic decomposition\, interior sampling\, mean-risk measures.\n\nBio:\nLewis Ntaimo is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University and has been with the university since 2004. He obtained his Ph.D. in Systems and Industrial Engineering in 2004\, his M.S. in Mining and Geological Engineering in 2000\, and B.S. in Mining Engineering\, all from the University of Arizona. Dr. Ntaimo’s research interests are in models and algorithms for large-scale stochastic optimization\, systems modeling and process optimization\, and computer simulation. Recent applications include patient and resource management in healthcare\, wildfire response planning\, aircraft assembly line production optimization\, energy reduction in data centers\, and wind farm operations and maintenance. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation\, Department of Homeland Security\, and industry. Dr. Ntaimo is a member of INFORMS and IISE\, and he is the 2018-2019 President of the INFORMS Minority Issues Forum. He currently serves as associate editor for INFORMS Journal on Computing\, IISE Transactions\, IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering\, and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Global Optimization.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Queer Migrant #Latinx Poemics / Unincuirporated
DESCRIPTION:The American Studies Consortium and the Global Postcolonialisms Collective present a hybrid creative-critical presentation by Prof. Urayoán Noel (NYU). The first part is a critical exploration of the Instagram work of queer migrant Latinx poets\, highlighting how their memes and hashtags embody a self-reflexive poetics of polemic (a \"poemics\") that challenges hegemonic Latinidad. The second part is a poetry reading and performance that interrogates the complexities of digital and embodied politics from an \"unincuirporated\" queer Puerto Rican perspective\, in \"poemic\" conversation with the work of the poets previously discussed. The performance is followed by a Q&A.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Anantha Aiyyer
DESCRIPTION:CLASP is very pleased to welcome Prof. Anantha Aiyyer of NC State University. \n\nProf. Aiyyer will give a presentation titled: \n\"New Perspectives in the Dynamics of African Easterly Waves\"\n\nAbstract: African Easterly waves are the main synoptic scale disturbances of the North African monsoon. They are also the primary precursors to tropical cyclones in the Atlantic. Many aspects of their origin\, evolution and storm track structure are still poorly understood. In this talk\, I will provide an overview of the basic properties of these disturbances and present some recent results from our group pertaining to their instability and coupling to precipitating convection.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Chair's Distinguished Seminar Series: \"Will Those Multi-rotor Aircraft Really 'Take-Off'?\"
DESCRIPTION:A number of hot topics in aviation right now — such as small UAS\, urban air mobility\, eVTOL aircraft — depend on new multirotor aircraft configurations. We know that these vehicles can fly in idealized conditions\, but will it take for their use to really “take-off” in society? This presentation will start by reviewing the enablers of these new vehicles. Then\, we’ll note a number of pressing issues being examined at Penn State that may limit their wide-spread use. For example\, small rotors can easily accrete ice in less-than-perfect atmospheric conditions. When designed for maximum performance\, they can be too noisy to operate in an urban environment — requiring trade-offs between vehicle performance and societal acceptance\, and meriting a careful engineering design of their landing and take-off procedures.\n\nThese vehicles typically depend on new methods of flight control and the business cases for many of them assume highly automated operations allowing for reduced human staffing levels. In a broader sense\, these vehicles\, and their operations\, are so novel compared to traditional methods for certification and operational approval that the aviation community needs to envision new bases for safety cases\, including new concepts for human-autonomy teaming\, new requirements for adaptive\, contextualized behavior\, and new methods for modeling and assessing safety.\n\nAbout the Speaker...\n\nAMY R. PRITCHETT is a professor and head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. Previously\, Dr. Pritchett was on the faculty of the Schools of Aerospace Engineering and of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2017\, and she also served via an IPA as the Director of NASA’s Aviation Safety Program in 2008 and 2009. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology\, expert human performance and aerospace operations\, with a particular focus on designing to support safety. She has received the AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award\, the RTCA William Jackson Award and\, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Commercial Aviation Safety Team\, the 2008 Collier Trophy. She earned her Sc.D.\, S.M. and S.B. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She chaired the National Research Council Committee examining FAA Air Traffic Controller Staffing Levels and Implications for FAA Budget\, and for Implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System\, and recently served as a member on other NRC committees reviewing the FAA Certification Research Plan\, Methods for Assessing the Safety of UAS Operations in the NAS\, and NASA’s astronaut corps. She also serves as a technical consultant on aircraft accident litigation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Fracton Phase of Matter: From Fantasy to Reality
DESCRIPTION:Fracton phase of matter shares many features of topological order\, including long-range entangled ground states and non-trivial braiding statistics. At the same time\, fracton phase contains subextensive ground-state degeneracy and the restricted mobility of quasiparticle which exclude itself from the TQFT paradigm. In this talk\, I will present a theoretical framework on higher rank Chern-Simons theory in 3D as the low energy effective theory for Fracton phases. In addition\, I will mention the emergent fractonic phenomenon in plaquette paramagnetic crystal which prompts an algebraic quantum liquid phase with a 'bose Fermi surface'.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Charting the spatiotemporal landscape of species’ responses to climate change
DESCRIPTION:The Carolina Parakeet\, the Heath Hen\, the Passenger Pigeon—when we contemplate how bird diversity has changed\, we often focus on the handful of species we have lost entirely. But while we have yet to lose a single bird species to our rapidly changing climate\, birds and other creatures are currently adapting and responding. Studying changing bird communities over decades to centuries\, Dr. Tingley’s work demonstrates the complex ways that species are responding to climate change\, often by shifting in space and traveling in time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Training Slaves for the Camera: “Racial Types” in Khartoum\, 1882
DESCRIPTION:Why did photographers in the nineteenth century take pictures of slaves? What were they looking for\, in the faces and bodies of those in bondage? What\, if any\, aesthetic\, cultural and racial understanding did these photographers bring to their craft? This discussion will explore these questions in the work of Louis Vossion\, a French photographer commissioned by his government to visually recreate the “types” of people living in Khartoum\, Sudan\, in 1882. With over 150 photographs\, Vossion created a visual encyclopedia of a city full of slaves\, a city that in 2 years' time would be completely changed by the Mahdiyya rebellion. These pictures thus form a museum by themselves\, an ode to a world that was\, in Vossion’s lifetime\, to be completely and violently changed.\n\nEve M. Troutt Powell is the Christopher H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mary-Claire King\, PhD [2019 MaryFran Sowers Memorial Lecture]
DESCRIPTION:A pre-eminent scholar\, Dr. King leads studies to understand the genetic causes of serious human disorders including breast and ovarian cancer and schizophrenia. Her work focuses on disentangling genetic heterogeneity in complex traits\, and on discovering rare alleles that cause common disorders. From her ground-breaking doctoral dissertation that transformed evolutionary biology to her formative work proving the existence of a major gene for a complex trait that demonstrated the genetic inheritance of breast cancer\, Dr. King has contributed significantly to the advancement of scientific knowledge of genetics. Most recently\, her laboratory developed and patented a targeted capture and massively parallel sequencing approach (BROCA) that detects mutations in breast and ovarian cancer genes. \n\nA leading human rights advocate\, Dr. King pioneered the development of genomics tools for human rights investigations including use of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing to match kidnapped children to possible maternal relatives after the end of Argentinian dictatorship of 1975-1983. Her approach is now used by governmental and United Nations forensic teams worldwide to identify remains of victims of extra-judicial execution and missing soldiers. \n\nDr. King received her PhD in Genetics from the University of California at Berkeley\, and her postdoctoral training at UC San Francisco. A professor at UC Berkeley from 1976-1995\, she has been the American Cancer Society Professor of Medical Genetics and Genome Sciences at the University of Washington since 1995. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (1994)\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1999)\, and the National Academy of Sciences (2005) and is a past President of the American Society of Human Genetics. Among her many honors\, she was awarded the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science (2014)\, the National Medal of Science (2016) and the Advocacy Award of the American Society of Human Genetics (2018).\nA reception\, sponsored by UM Precision Health\, will immediately follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:Other:Unconventional techniques of imaging and microscopy for bio-medical applications.
DESCRIPTION: \n Over the last few years a significant effort has been directed towards unconventional imaging techniques\, such as microscopy without lenses as it can overcome some of the drawbacks associated with tradition optical microscopy\, that rely on objective lenses\, which results in a trade-off between the field of view and the resolution. Thus lens-less microscopy allows imaging and analysis over a wide area\, enabling high throughput measurements\, in addition to being cost-effective and portable. In this type of microscopy\, the images are computationally reconstructed from in-line holograms\, which result from the interference between the scattered optical wave from the sample and the directly transmitted wave. Here\, I will present about lens-free on-chip microscopy designs\, image reconstruction and its utility towards a wide range of applications related to sizing of nanoparticles\, nanoparticle-aggregation\, bio-sensing of pathogens and rare cancer cells\, characterization of polymer degradation\, material properties and rheology. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAniruddha Ray

DESCRIPTION:Join us for conversation with Ruth Leonela Buentello\, Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence\, and curator Amanda Krugliak\, followed by reception.\n\nAbout \"Yo Tengo Nombre\":\nThis series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017.

SUMMARY:Performance:Amy Speace
DESCRIPTION:Nashville-based\, Amy Speace is a folk singer\, timeless and classic\, and a bit out of her own era. \"She has one of the richest and loveliest voices in the genre and her songs are luxuriously smart\,\" writes journalist Craig Havighurst (host of Nashville’s Music City Roots). \"She’s profoundly personal yet also a bit mythic.\" Since her discovery in 2006 by folk-pop icon Judy Collins\, who signed her to her own imprint Wildflower Records\, Amy has been heralded as one of the leading voices of the new generation of American folk singers. Her song “The Weight of the World” was named as the #4 Best Folk Song of the last decade by NYC’s premiere AAA radio station\, WFUV and was recorded by Judy Collins. From her beginnings in New York City as a classically trained actress with The National Shakespeare Company\, to the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village where she began playing her original songs\, to her move to East Nashville in 2009\, to her most recent release\, \"That Kind Of Girl\,: what ties all of her work together is a palpable empathy for the small struggles of the human condition. Rock critic Dave Marsh\, long a fan\, wrote taht \"Amy Speace’s songs hang together like a short story collection\, united by a common vantage point and common predicaments … it’s a gift to hear a heart so modest even when it’s wide open.\" She comes to Michigan with a brand-new release\, \"Me and the Ghost of Charlemagne.\"\n\nThis show is free at the door for Ark members at the Solo level and above.
