SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Yo Tengo Nombre
DESCRIPTION:This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.\n\n\"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization\, vulnerability\, fear\, loss\, and criminalization\, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood.\" -Ruth Leonela Buentello\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Microeconomics/IO Seminar: Quantifying the Benefits to Consumers of Subscription-based Streaming Video Service
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThis paper builds a structural model of the demand for television subscription services in the United States in order to quantify the benefits from the new product---streaming video services. A new dataset on the television services prices and characteristics is used to estimate the model. The paper then calculates the compensating variation for the counterfactual simulation which removes streaming services from the consumer's choice set.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. She also maintains a personal website\, cynthiasowers.rc.lsa.umich.edu\, where she publishes essays\, poetry\, and visual artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Strengths of Refugees and Their Community
DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Things I Like Most About the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. During a 23-year career with the Clements\, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps\, head of research and publications\, associate director\, and acting director. Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well\, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting\, conservation\, solving mysteries\, and more. \n\nDunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts\, striking visual imagery and cartography\, and some of his favorite materials from the collections\, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice
DESCRIPTION:In September 2019\, the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design will host the New Media Caucus 2019 Symposium and Exhibition\, Border Control.  Symposium and exhibition events will take place in Ann Arbor at the Stamps School of Art and Design (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.) and Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.).\n\nExhibition Dates: September 20 - November 10\, 2019\nSymposium Dates: September 19 - 22\, 2019\nGuest Curator: Allison Collins\, Media Arts Curator\, Western Front\n\nCurated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra.\nIn partnership with the New Media Caucus \n\nHuman migration is a defining issue of the 21st century\, often calling into question the relevance\, role\, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces\, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed\, defensive and receptive\, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control responds to these conditions with an open-ended question\, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries\, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities\, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality\, the winds\, currents\, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.\n\nDrawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media\, Border Control assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts\, patterns of migration\, displacement\, and statelessness. Collectively\, they offer projects with subterfuge\, refusal\, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ceal Floyer: Things
DESCRIPTION:Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum\, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects\, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language\, meaning\, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.\n \nThe installation\, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art\, is characteristically austere\, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art\, in which the idea\, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities\, is the essence of the artwork.\n\nLead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design\, Institute for the Humanities\, CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, and School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Beyond the East-West Encounter: Inter-Asian Intimacies and Estrangements in Colonial and Postcolonial Burma\, 1850–1950
DESCRIPTION:Sexual\, conjugal\, and household relations between white colonial masters and native women have long served as the paradigm of the colonial encounter. The talk offers a different and as yet untold story of colonial interaction: inter-Asian intimacies. Under British (1826–1942\; 1945–47) and Japanese (1942–45) colonial rule\, Burma\, as with much of Southeast Asia\, was a destination for millions of Indian\, Chinese\, and Japanese merchants\, laborers\, soldiers\, and civil servants. These overwhelmingly male Asian subjects and brokers of empire forged intimate ties with local women as sexual\, emotional\, domestic\, and business partners—one role often bleeding into another—within and outside the institution of marriage. These intimacies became\, over the course of the twentieth century\, flashpoints for far-reaching legislative reforms\, communal riots\, and anti-colonial\, Buddhist\, feminist\, and nationalist movements. Based on imperial archival\, vernacular\, and oral sources in Burmese\, Japanese\, Chinese\, and English that have never been brought together\, the talk explores shifts and continuities in perceptions\, practices\, and experiences of inter-Asian intimacy in colonial Burma\, resisting both the stigmatization and the romanticization of inter-Asian intimacies as either treacherous liaisons or heroic acts of radical love. It shows how inter-Asian intimacies constituted the primary\, and hitherto unrecognized\, site for articulating and adjudicating modern understandings of race\, religion\, and nation that continue to vex Burma and other parts of Southeast Asia today. The talk concludes with a reflection on the significance of these prevalent yet neglected intimacies for new approaches to the study of modern colonialisms and their legacies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Graduate Student Workshop: Envisioning Race
DESCRIPTION:Images are intimate. They are reflections of historical subjects that simultaneously reveal traces of their creators and gain new meanings when archived and revisited. This workshop features graduate student research on Afro-Brazilian community magazines and racialized political scandals in Brazil\, jazz photography in the Jim Crow United States\, and Jewish refugees from Europe in British India. Panelists will explore how images have been used to test or challenge racial categories\, empower communities\, and capture or instrumentalize intimate spaces and moments. We invite the speakers and the audience to share reflections on their own methodologies and experiences of interrogating visual sources.\n\nFeaturing:\nLucas Koutsoukos Chalhoub\, Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan\nMarisol Fila\, Graduate Student\, Romance Languages and Literatures\, University of Michigan\nPragya Kaul\, Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan\nTraci Lombre\, Graduate Student\, American Culture\, University of Michigan\nEve Troutt Powell\, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of History and Africana Studies\, University of Pennsylvania\nFrank Espinosa (chair)\, Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan\n\nThis event is part of the Friday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

He will show how usability testing and HFE aspects of risk management fit into BME senior and graduate design courses (as co-instructor). The focus is on methods and structure required by FDA and international standards (e.g.\, IEC 62366). Additionally\, a short overview of how he also injects some HFE into other BME courses like “Needs Finding” (BME 499\, Dr. Rachael Schmedlen\, lead) and Regulatory science (BME 588\, Dr Joan Greve\, lead) will be presented.\n\nBio: \nJohn Gosbee\, MD\, MS teaches human factors engineering (HFE) and patient safety at the University of Michigan Departments of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. He leads development of patient safety curriculum for several medical and surgical residencies. He teaches HFE for several BME design courses\, including capstone design courses\, observation course\, and regulatory science. He also provides HFE consultation to UM research projects that involve new device design (e.g.\, teleophthalmology). He has been visiting professor at dozens of universities\, including Penn\, Johns Hopkins\, and Yale University. He has received two national awards for patient safety design (ISMP’s “Cheers Award” and AAMI’s “Career Achievement Award”. Among dozens of other publications\, he edited and co-wrote the book\, Using Human Factors Engineering to Improve Patient Safety. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Workplace Discrimination at the Intersection of Race and Gender
DESCRIPTION:Issues related to discrimination\, belonging\, and harassment in the workplace are intersectional (Cole 2009\; Crenshaw 1989). That is\, people are harassed\, excluded\, and discriminated against for a variety of social identities (e.g.\, class\, sexuality\, gender\, age\, race\, size) which intersect and interrelate. In social and organizational psychology\, efforts to understand and end workplace discrimination thus far have tended to focus on single dimensions of marginalization or privilege (e.g.\, gender)\, giving us an incomplete picture of how discrimination is enacted and experienced. In this talk\, I will discuss research from the PWR (Power\, Women\, and Relationships) Lab that has used intersectionality theory and the stereotype content model to understand how discrimination manifests for employees based on their combined racial and gender identities. First\, I will discuss published quantitative research with students Jessica Saunders and Ryan Jacobson on how STEM professors evaluate post-doc candidates based on the candidates’ race and gender\, together. Next\, I will discuss published and unpublished qualitative research with student Anna Kallschmidt on identity management and belonging among White men employees from working class and impoverished backgrounds. Finally\, I will discuss work student Sarah Robinson and I are pursuing on how the use of certain dialectical styles (White American\, urban African American\, and Southern American) effects ratings of men employees in individual-structured telephone interviews. Implications of intersectional approaches for fair and just hiring practices and for diversity trainings and interventions will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Performance:Performing Arts Technology Seminar: Luke Dahl\, University of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Luke Dahl is assistant professor of Composition and Computer Technologies in the Music Department at University of Virginia where he teaches classes on music technology\, audio signal processing\, and music interaction design. His research is primarily situated in the interdisciplinary field of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) which investigates and explores the intersection of technology and musical practice through the activities of design\, musical performance\, and empirical research. He is especially interested in systems for digitally-mediated real-time music collaboration\, and in the role of movement and gesture in music. \n\nDahl has recently released alpha versions of two software libraries: Modosc is a Max library for processing motion-capture data in real-time to enable movement-based interactions\, and was created in collaboration with Dr. Federico Visi. Bf-Pd is a library written in PureData which facilitates real-time data-sharing and collaboration between musicians in spontaneously formed ensembles. Bf-Pd was developed in collaboration with Dr Florent Berthaut at Université de Lille.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquium: Lynne Tirrell (UConn)
DESCRIPTION:This talk will introduce the central concepts of my account of toxic speech\, drawing from both philosophy of language and social epidemiology. A medical conception of toxicity looks at the toxin\, the dose\, frequency\, route of delivery\, susceptibility of the individual or population\, and more. All these factors can be fruitfully explored in connection to understanding the mechanisms by which speech acts and discursive practices can inflict harm\, making sense of claims about harms arising from speech devoid of slurs\, epithets\, or a narrower class I call ‘deeply derogatory terms.’ By highlighting the role of uptake and susceptibility\, and this model suggests a framework for thinking about damage variation. Toxic effects vary depending on one’s epistemic position\, access\, and authority. An inferentialist account of discursive practice plus a dynamic view of the power of language games offers tools to analyze the toxic power of speech acts. Even a simple account of language games has the potential to track changes in our discursive practices. Identifying patterns contributes to an epidemiology of toxic speech\, which might include tracking increasing use of derogatory terms\, us/them dichotomization\, terms of isolation\, new essentialisms\, and more. Finally\, I will highlight a few ways to respond to toxic speech\, some predictable from past theories (Brandom’s challenging\, Langton’s blocking) and some perhaps more unexpected.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Interdisciplinary Workshop American Politics (IWAP)
DESCRIPTION:The Interdisciplinary Workshop on American Politics (IWAP) is a forum for the presentation of ongoing interdisciplinary research in American politics. Most of our presentations are given by graduate students. Each graduate student presenter is assigned a faculty and student discussant. IWAP circulates the work beforehand and the student presents it briefly at the start of the meeting. After discussant feedback\, the bulk of the time is reserved for group discussion among all workshop participants. This format leads to informal yet highly interactive and productive conversations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Chemistry of Core-mantle Differentiation of Earth's Interior
DESCRIPTION:Early in its history\, Earth differentiated into the core-mantle structure that defines its interior. Although this process had a profound effect on the planet\, largely establishing the major and trace element compositions of the metallic core and silicate mantle\, the planetary differentiation process itself remains largely a mystery. Important constraints on planetary differentiation are provided by experimental investigations of metal-silicate reactions at high pressures and temperatures\, simulating the thermodynamic conditions at which much of the differentiation is thought to have occurred. These studies have shown\, for example\, that characteristic P\,T conditions for core-mantle equilibration are comparable to the liquidus at mid-mantle depths\, and that these reactions produce metal compositions that are broadly consistent with the geophysical constraints on Earth's core. The consequences of core-mantle differentiation on the planetary budgets of several trace elements will also be discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Thomas R. Trautmann Honorary Lecture | Early Readers and Early Readings of the Mahābhārata
DESCRIPTION:The Sanskrit Mahābhārata did not receive a commentary until the eleventh century. Well before then\, however\, it had become a central feature of Indian high culture\, adapted by poets and dramatists\, deliberated on by philosophers and aestheticians. Over the past century scholars have usefully examined these early treatments for what they tell us about the history of the Mahābhārata’s text. The commentaries\, some of which establish a version of the text\, have been put to similar text-historical use. \n\nIn this lecture I will argue for the value of the material that lies outside the boundaries of the epic proper\, not in writing the history of the text\, but in writing the history of that text’s meaning to its readers. An interest in the history of the reception of ancient canonical texts through their commentaries and related paratexts has gained prominence in the study of the literary traditions of other parts of the world\, because of its inherent interest and its utility for intellectual history. With some exceptions\, the Indological field has remained hesitant about reception studies\, in part because it is perceived to open the door to anachronistic readings\, thereby violating a governing disciplinary principle\, that of historicism. And yet built into this Indological stance is a contradiction\, due to the huge extra-academic importance in the present of Sanskrit texts like the Mahābhārata.\n\nIn 1942\, the founding editor of the Poona edition\, V.S. Sukthankar\, delivered a series of seminal lectures\, ‘On the Meaning of the Mahābhārata\,’ that is representative of the quandary. Sukthankar proposed a meaning for the epic working from within the text itself. He did not rely on the commentators\, epitomizers\, poets\, or literary theorists\, yet in ruling out possibilities he did use as an argument the brute fact of the importance of the Mahābhārata to the Indian people. The idea of the Mahābhārata as India’s national epic whispers through the twentieth century scholarship\, and yet its popularity in the present is neither an automatic result of its antiquity nor an accident of modernity.\n\nThe text was composed to create a remembered past. Over time its transmitters adjusted that memory and the text itself as they performed it\, codified it\, and used it as a point of departure. Survivals of this process are abundant in the Mahabharata’s poetic and dramatic recreations and occasional pieces\, and especially in its ancillary literature: its commentaries\, its versified summaries\, its indices\, and its ‘satellite texts\,’ that is\, marginal verses and other materials\, some of which crept into the body of the epic over time.\n\nIf for nothing else\, the history of the reception of the itihasa of the Bhārata clan through this material can serve as a way to confirm or disconfirm historical claims about the epic’s meaning\, either as invented or as original\, especially when the claims are presented as justiciable only by experts\, or when the claims pretend to speak for a collective indigenous understanding that is inaccessible to those not native to the culture. Special reference will be made to episodes with elephants\, either actual or imaginary\, and to the Arthaśāstra. \n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Fifth Annual Glenn F. Knoll Lecture: Adam Bernstein\, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Detection and Measurement of Highly Penetrating Radiation\n\nABSTRACT: Glenn Knoll’s seminal textbook on Radiation Detection and Measurement covers the topic with great depth\, breadth and clarity\, with an obvious and sensible focus on ionizing radiations. In this lecture I discuss a type of radiation that does not readily induce ionization\, but is nonetheless a continued source of fascination and study by physicists\, and more recently\, nuclear engineers. Neutrinos have remarkable properties of penetration\, passing through the entire Earth with a vanishingly small probability of interaction. In sufficiently large numbers\, such as are emitted by reactors\, the sun\, the Earth itself\, and supernovae\, the aggregated probability of interaction becomes appreciable. When a neutrino does interact\, it generates the familiar ionizing radiations whose detection is reviewed in Professor Knoll’s textbook. In this lecture\, I will introduce the basic properties of the neutrino\, share some of the triumphs and tribulations of the experimentalists who have sought to measure them\, and discuss relatively recent efforts at my own Laboratory\, and world-wide\, to harness these unusual\, seductively evanescent particles for the practical purpose of monitoring the operations of nuclear reactors. \n\nBIO: Dr. Adam Bernstein is a staff physicist at LLNL and a fellow of the American Physical Society. He also leads the Rare Event Detection group in the Nuclear & Chemical Sciences division at LLNL. Since receiving his PhD in physics from Columbia University in 1995\, he has worked on the development of advanced low noise\, low cost\, high-efficiency and high-resolution radiation detectors for use in fundamental and applied physics. He has pioneered and helped bring to maturity what has become a wide international effort to develop antineutrino detectors as a tool for monitoring nuclear reactors.\n\nIn the area of applied physics\, Bernstein’s main interests are in the development of improved radiation detection techniques that facilitate global nuclear arms control\, nonproliferation\, and disarmament. His fundamental physics interests are primarily in the study of rare neutral particles\, in particular the measurement of neutrino oscillations using reactor sources\, and the search for direct interactions of dark matter in Earthly detectors. \n\n\nThis annual lecture series was made possible by a generous endowment from Gladys Knoll to commemorate the over 50-year UM career in education and research of the late Professor Emeritus\, Chair and Interim Dean\, Glenn F. Knoll. These lectures in nuclear measurements\, the field pioneered by Professor Knoll\, will be an inspiration to future generations of students.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES 60th Anniversary Signature Lecture. The Ukrainian Famine: What We Know Now—And Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization—in effect a second Russian revolution—which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine\, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief\, the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem. In her book \"Red Famine\,\" Anne Applebaum argues that more than three million of those dead were Ukrainians who perished not because they were accidental victims of a bad policy\, but because the state deliberately set out to kill them. \n \nToday\, Russia\, the successor to the Soviet Union\, has placed Ukrainian independence in its sights once more. Applebaum’s compulsively readable narrative recalls one of the worst crimes of the twentieth century\, and shows how it may foreshadow a new threat to the political order in the twenty-first. \n \nAnne Applebaum is a foreign policy columnist for the Washington Post and a prize-winning author with a particular expertise in the history of communist and post-communist Europe. She is also a senior fellow at the Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and a professor of practice at the London School of Economics\, where she runs ARENA\, a research project on disinformation and 21st century propaganda. She is the author of several books\, including \"Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine\" and \"Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe.\" Her book \"Gulag: A History\" won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction\, and her writing has also won the Cundill\, Nonino and Lionel Gelber prizes\, among many others. Anne is a former member of the \"Washington Post\" editorial board\, a former deputy editor of the \"Spectator\" magazine\, and a former Warsaw correspondent of \"The Economist.\" She has lectured at many universities\, including Yale\, Harvard\, Columbia\, Oxford\, Cambridge\, and Georgetown\, where she was awarded an honorary doctorate. She writes regularly for the \"New York Review of Books\,\" \"Foreign Affairs\,\" and many other publications. \n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to weisercenter@umich.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Exhibition Opening Reception: Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the work of artists and designers featured in Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice. Enjoy a live DJ and refreshments.\n\nHuman migration is a defining issue of the 21st century\, often calling into question the relevance\, role\, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces\, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed\, defensive and receptive\, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice responds to these conditions with an open-ended question\, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries\, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities\, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality\, the winds\, currents\, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.\n\nDrawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media\, Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts\, patterns of migration\, displacement\, and statelessness. Collectively\, they offer projects with subterfuge\, refusal\, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.\n\nArtists: Annabel Castro\, Mahwish Chishty\, Lyn Goeringer\, Ryan Griffis & Sarah Ross\, Kate Hollenbach\, Carrie Hott\, X.A. SUMMARY:Performance:Reckless Kelly
DESCRIPTION:The heartland gave the band authenticity. Musical lives honed its skill. Adversity instilled its persistence. Moving to Austin gave it wings to fly. Understanding the virtuosity of Reckless Kelly requires the perspective of where the band has been. Cody and Willy Braun grew up in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. They moved to Bend\, Oregon\, and then migrated to that great musical fountainhead\, Austin\, Texas. It's natural that Reckless Kelly\, born in the dreams of the two Braun brothers and their heritage but nurtured in the bumpy road of maturity\, became the very essence of Americana music in all its far-flung glory. \"We came along in that second wave of the movement\,\" Cody Braun says. “Son Volt’s album 'Trace' had a major effect on us. People like Joe Ely\, Ray Kennedy and Robert Earl Keen were always big supporters. Our goal was to make music that had a country vibe but a solid rock edge. As Music Row magazine proclaimed\, \"In my perfect world\, this is what country radio would sound like.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n Xiaoya Liu\, piano (Winner\, 2019 SMTD Concerto Competition)\n\nPre-concert lecture at 7:15 PM in the lower lobby.\n\nThe University Symphony Orchestra (USO)\, conducted by its music director Kenneth Kiesler\, opens its season with an exciting program of masterworks by French and Russian composers. Xiaoya Liu\, a winner of the 2019 SMTD Concerto Competition\, joins the USO to perform one of the most virtuosic and justly popular piano concertos of the 20th Century\, the Prokofiev Third. After Mussorgsky breathed musical life into the work of artist Victor Hartmann with his set of piano pieces called Pictures at an Exhibition\, other composers transformed it into a piece for symphony orchestra. The task stirred the imagination and creativity of perhaps the greatest orchestrator of the era–or any era–Maurice Ravel. The result\, with its stunning palette of colors\, demanding solo passages\, and sheer sonic opulence\, has become one of the most widely performed and beloved pieces of the symphonic repertoire. \n\nPROGRAM-\nBerlioz- Roman Carnival Overture\nProkofiev- Piano Concerto No. 3\nMussorgsky/Ravel- Pictures at an Exhibition
